Will Pucovski, Nic Maddinson named in Victoria's Shield squad after mental health breaks

James Pattinson was also named, subject to being released from the Test squad, in the 13-man side to face New South Wales

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Nov-2019Will Pucovski and Nic Maddinson have been named in Victoria’s Sheffield Shield squad to face New South Wales at the MCG starting Friday after receiving medical clearance to return following a break to treat mental health and well-being issues. Both Pucovski and Maddinson had taken breaks from the game within a space of six days earlier this month, just after Glenn Maxwell opted out of the T20I series against Sri Lanka for the same reason. Maddinson and Maxwell returned to club cricket in Melbourne over the last weekend, with positive returns. Both Pucovski and Maddinson trained with the Victoria squad on Wednesday at the MCG while Maxwell did a running session. Cricket Victoria general manager Shaun Graf confirmed that both Pucovski and Maddinson had been cleared to play; however, Maxwell has not been cleared yet.”We are looking forward to having Nic and Will back playing for Victoria after receiving clearance from our medical staff,” Graf said. “We’ll continue to support all our players through their return to play.”Victoria team-mate and Australia’s T20I captain Aaron Finch has been in constant contact with Maxwell during his time out of the game including after his return to club cricket on the weekend.”He was OK. It probably took him a bit longer than he thought to get back into it,” Finch said.”I don’t want to speak on his behalf. But no doubt it’s going to be a gradual process to get back, and whether that’s next week, or next month or next year I think it’s something that with the amount of awareness around mental health and stuff like that these days I think that you have to be mindful of the player making the right decision in their best interest and not trying to rush them back for a particular game or set a defined date on it. I think it’s just a case-by-case scenario.”I know in Maxy’s case a lot of the time he passed it off as tiredness and [being] run down from the game. A lot of the time’s there’s more to it than that.”Fast bowler James Pattinson was also named in the 13-man squad, subject to being released from the Test squad, after missing the Gabba Test against Pakistan through suspension.Marcus Harris also returned for Victoria having missed their last Shield match because of Australia A duty.Victoria chairman of selectors Andrew Lynch was pleased to have a few big names back into the side as the defending Shield champions currently sit bottom of the table without a win in four games. “To bring Marcus Harris, Nic Maddinson, Will Pucovski and potentially James Pattinson back into the squad is really positive as we move into the final two Shield matches before the [BBL] break,” Lynch said. “We’re now looking to get some results on the board to put ourselves in a better position for the second half of the season.”Victoria left out recent debutant Jake Fraser-McGurk and Eamonn Vines. Fraser-McGurk, 17, remarkably will play for Victoria at the national Under-19s championships in Perth just a week after making half-centuries on both Sheffield Shield and List A debut.Victoria are also without acting head coach Lachie Stevens who is on paternity leave. Former Victoria and Australia batsman Brad Hodge has been called in as a short-term senior assistant coach for the game against New South Wales in Stevens’ absence.Squad: Peter Handscomb (capt), Andrew Fekete, Aaron Finch, Sam Harper, Marcus Harris, Jon Holland, Nic Maddinson, James Pattinson, Will Pucovski, Matthew Short, Peter Siddle, Will Sutherland, Chris Tremain

Westwood retires with immediate effect

Ian Westwood, the Warwickshire opening batsman and former captain, has announced his retirement with immediate effect following a 15-year playing career

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Jun-2017Ian Westwood, the Warwickshire opening batsman and former captain, has announced his retirement with immediate effect following a 15-year playing career.Westwood, 34, was born and raised in Birmingham, and progressed through Warwickshire’s youth teams, making his first appearance for the club in the Under-11s before coming through their development of excellence programme to make his first-class debut against India A in 2003.He was part of the team that won the County Championship title in 2004 and was appointed as club captain in 2009. After stepping down the following year, he played a key role in Warwickshire’s County Championship triumph in 2012, and retires having played 159 first-class games for the club, scoring 16 centuries. The most recent of those hundreds came earlier this season, a fighting knock of 153 against Surrey at Warwickshire that helped to set his side up for a hard-earned draw in what has otherwise been a troubling Championship campaign. Four defeats in their first six matches have left them rooted firmly to the bottom of Division One.”Playing for my home county was all that I ever wanted to do as a junior and I am very proud to have enjoyed a 15-year career where I have been part of teams that have won the County Championship, and also captained the club,” said Westwood.”It has been a very difficult decision to retire, but this is the right time and I would like to thank the many people that have supported me throughout, particularly the players and coaches who I have worked with, club members and of course my family.”I’m now going to enjoy a period with my family, but certainly intend to remain in cricket and will be a regular visitor to Edgbaston to catch up with the lads and support the Bears.”Jim Troughton, Warwickshire’s first-team coach previously played with Westwood for 12 years, said: “Westy typified the character and professionalism needed to be a true Bear.”Opening the batting in Division One Championship cricket is a real test of skill and temperament and he has exhibited this throughout his career.”He has captained the club and been an integral part of our success over the last 13 years and he should be very proud of what he has achieved.”Ashley Giles, the club’s sport director, added: “Westy has given everything to Warwickshire CCC since he first wore the Bear and Ragged Staff. It has been an absolute pleasure to have worked with him as a player and captain.”It is a very brave decision to choose to retire at this stage of the season, but it is one that we fully respect and I am very much in favour of players leaving the game on their own terms, when they believe that it is the right time.”We thank Ian for his immense contribution to Warwickshire CCC and, given his love for the club, we certainly expect to see him at Edgbaston on a regular basis.”

Chris Gayle took his run tally in three NatWest T20 Blast innings for Somerset to 328 as his side beat Hampshire by eight wickets in front of a sell-out 6,500 Taunton crowd. The hosts reached a modest target of 168 with nine balls to spare, Gayle blasting an unbeaten 85 off 49 balls, with eight sixes and four fours, and Peter Trego 51.James Vince cracked an unbeaten 64 off 53 balls to help Hampshire to 167 for 3 after winning the toss, Sean Ervine contributing 30 at the death. But it never looked likely to be enough in excellent batting conditions. The Hampshire innings featured only two sixes on one of the smaller grounds on the county circuit. Both were hit over deep square, by Owais Shah in the 14th over and Sean Ervine in the 19th. By the end of the six overs of Powerplay the visitors were 51 for 1, having just lost Michael Carberry for 20 to a well-judged catch by James Hildreth on the square-leg boundary off Sohail Tanvir.Vince, who survived a stumping chance on 34, was never able to totally cut loose, but reached his half-century off 44 balls, with 6 fours, while Ervine provided some necessary late acceleration with a 17-ball cameo.

Insights

Hampshire scored 47 runs off the final four overs yet still recorded a total that was proven to be under-par. Given that Hampshire lost only three wickets and all five of their batsman got in and got to double-figures they should have got closer to a match-winning score with the bat. Ultimately 6 overs of only 5 runs or less cost Hampshire, but so too did not having Gayle, whose brilliance made Hampshire’s score far worse than it was.

Jim Allenby was the pick of the Somerset bowlers, surprisingly bowling only three overs for 11 runs and the wicket of Shah, caught at midwicket for 16 with the total on 113. By then Hampshire had also lost Jimmy Adams for 23, including four fours, a victim for Lewis Gregory, and Somerset could feel well satisfied with their bowling efforts in bright sunshine. The home side’s reply got off to a poor start when Marcus Trescothick, having faced five dot balls in the second over from Fidel Edwards, top-edged the sixth to third-man and departed for a single with the score on six. After four overs Somerset were becalmed on 17 for 1, thanks to a lively opening spell from Edwards. But Gayle got the scoreboard moving with two sixes and a four off Chris Wood. Even so, it was only 38 for 1 at the end of the Powerplay. Trego had been dropped on six by Shah at midwicket off Wood and was soon making Hampshire pay with sixes off Danny Briggs and Will Smith.Trego, the powerful allrounder outscored Gayle to move to his half-century off 32 balls, with seven fours and two sixes, before top-edging a catch to wicketkeeper Adam Wheater off Briggs. That over had also seen Gayle dropped on 36. The West Indies star was given another life by Smith off his own bowling in the next over and promptly hit the next delivery for his fifth six.The sixth, a soaring straight hit, saw Gayle reach a 36-ball half-century after which the result was never in doubt. He ended the match with yet another maximum, punching the air in delight at another seemingly effortless display.”I’ll be having a few ciders with the lads to celebrate,” Somerset match-winner Gayle said. “It was an important win for the team in the group because now we have two victories from four games and I’m delighted to scored some more runs. The crowd pumped me up at the end and I was able to finish the game with the six they were calling for. I love the atmosphere at Taunton and I’m looking forward to another home match against Surrey before I leave. I’m sorry my time here is so short because things could hardly have gone better. It was good team performance today. We bowled and fielded well.”Hampshire director of cricket Giles White said: “The crowd came to see Gayle and were royally entertained by a fantastic innings. From our point of view, we felt we were 15 runs short because Somerset bowled particularly well and then we failed to take our chances in the field, dropping both Trego and Gayle at vital times.”

Jurgensen is interim Bangladesh coach

Shane Jurgensen has been made the interim Bangladesh coach for next month’s series against West Indies

Mohammad Isam24-Oct-2012Shane Jurgensen has been made the interim Bangladesh coach for next month’s series against West Indies, the BCB announced on Wednesday. The bowling coach will take over the position vacated by Richard Pybus who notified the board of his unwillingness to continue over differences with the board pertaining to his contract and alleged interference in team matters. The board has refuted Pybus’ allegations and has asked its head of cricket operations for a detailed clarification statement by November 1.”Richard Pybus, through his agent, informed us on Monday that he will not be returning to Bangladesh,” Nazmul Hassan said after conducting his first meeting as BCB president. “Bowling coach Shane Jurgensen will take up the responsibility of the head coach for the upcoming West Indies series, but we will advertise for the newly vacant position soon.”Pybus told ESPNcricinfo that he will not be continuing as Bangladesh coach after a major fall-out with the BCB regarding his contract which he ultimately never signed. He also made allegations of interference by board directors as well as being constrained by the board’s cricket operations department on issues such as the Bangladesh players’ diet, availability of a game-analysis system and the training programme ahead of the series against West Indies.Hassan said the head of cricket operations, Enayet Hossain Siraj, will prepare a clarification document which will be presented to the board on November 1. “I have seen the Cricinfo interview where he has accused us of many things. We have given Enayet Hossain Siraj the responsibility to prepare a response by November 1. We will address all the allegations he’s made. He mentioned a few particular things like bringing meat from Australia. Such things can’t be done overnight.”We also have to consider whether our players will become fit after having such food for 7-10 days and having a different diet for the rest of the year. We want more in-depth information, what his complaints were.”Pybus also spoke of interference from board directors but Jalal Yunus, the BCB media committee chairman, said the former coach had complete control of the team’s affairs. “We don’t agree [with his accusations of interference],” Yunus said. “He had 100% control and we always lent him a hand in support.”We just wanted him to come to the country and complete the West Indies series,” Yunus said. “We preferred one-on-one negotiation in person rather than through e-mails. We have no grievances against him, but what he had asked for to be in charge of the West Indies series, we couldn’t agree on principle.”Hassan said the board will learn from the mistakes made while dealing with Pybus and the next coach will be fully informed of what is expected from him.”From what I have heard, Pybus was one of the best coaches we have had so far,” Hassan said. “Maybe we were too happy about that. But without a written contract, we will face similar problems in the future. I am assuring you such things will not happen.”We want a full-time coach, not someone who would be with us only during matches and leave whenever there’s a break in play. Whoever we hire next, will have to be informed of all this in writing.”

Bulls overcome Aiyappa hat-trick for winning start

Round-up of the opening day’s action in the Karnataka Premier League

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Sep-2010Bijapur Bulls overcame a few nervous moments and overhauled the revised target of 75, with three balls to spare, after Bangalore Provident (Rural) posted 123 for 4 off 17 overs in Bangalore. Opener Maniunath Manjunath set the platform for BP with 47 off 42 balls, and Rahul Bhatkal increased the pace towards the end with two sixes and three fours in his 28-ball 39. Bulls had to score 75 in nine overs and their reply was kick-started by a 41-run opening stand between Gaurav Dhiman and Mithun Beerala. Devraj Patil who came in at one-drop hustled 23 off 10 balls to put the Bulls in charge before four wickets fell in four balls to set up a tight finish. NC Aiyappa removed Dhiman, Patil and Sudhindra Shinde off successive balls, and Nithin Mulky was run-out off the next, leaving Bulls needing seven off the last over. Stuart Binny, however, held his nerve and sealed the deal in their favour.Suraj Sampath struck an unbeaten 60 off 55 balls as Belagavi Panthers overcame Malnad Gladiators’ modest total of 110 in Bangalore. Malnad’s bowlers set up the win, with seamer Ronit More standing out with a spell of 2 for 23 in four overs. Belgavi’s chase was off to a poor start, with Jagadeesh Arunkumar perishing in the first over. Shyam Ponnappa struggled to force the pace and when he fell, at 57 for 2 in the 13th over, Gladiators scented an opening. Sampath, however, shut the door on them and finished things in Suresh Vinod’s company, with eight balls to spare.

Smith sets his sights on 2028 Olympics amid T20 ambitions

He returned to the BBL with a stunning century at the SCG having lost his Australia T20I spot last year

Smith: Missing the 10k-run mark ‘hurt a little bit’

Steven Smith has set his sights on the 2028 Olympics, declaring he wants to prolong his short-form career and return to Australia’s T20 team for the Los Angeles Games.Smith produced one of the finest T20 innings of his career on Saturday, smashing an unbeaten 121 from 64 balls for Sydney Sixers against Perth Scorchers to set up a BBL victory.Australia’s former T20 captain hit seven sixes in his knock, manipulating Scorchers’ bowling and getting inventive in his efforts to target the short boundary.Related

Smith has become something of a forgotten force in T20 cricket in recent years, and even missed selection in Australia’s squad for last year’s T20 World Cup. He has also been overlooked in the past four IPL auctions, the only franchise cricket he played last year being for Washington in the USA’s Major League Cricket. But Smith’s BBL form has regularly shown he is among the best T20 openers in the country, hitting three centuries in his last seven matches in the competition. The trio of tons brought him level with Ben McDermott for the most in tournament history, with Smith having played just 32 games to McDermott’s 100.His average of 45.88 is the highest of any local, while he holds the sixth best strike-rate of any player with 146.3.But Smith says he does not want to be a domestic-player only in the shortest format, eying off a return to Australian colours.”I’d like to play the Olympics, I reckon that would be cool,” Smith said. “We’ll see how far I go in terms of long-form cricket. But I am going to play short-form cricket for a while I think when I do finish. You never know. There are a lot of good young kids who are smacking the ball out of the park.”Steven Smith was spectacular at the SCG•Getty Images

Smith will be 39 by the time cricket returns to the Olympics in 2028, with the sport featuring for the first time since 1900 when only Great Britain and France featured. He has not yet outlined his retirement plans for red-ball cricket, but has made no secret of his desire to play T20s longer into the future.Smith entered Saturday’s game with virtually no T20 preparation, with a 15-minute net before the BBL game his only hit against the white ball following the India Test series. He has played solely as an opener in T20, with his record generally improving the longer a tournament goes on. And with the likely chance to focus solely on the 20-over format in years to come, Smith believes his game could improve further.”I find the more I play back-to-back games you get in sync with the game,” Smith said. “Even [Saturday] I don’t think I played my first 10 balls really well. I was probably going a bit too hard for how the wicket was playing.”But if I am playing T20s regularly, I probably come out with a slightly different mindset at the start, give myself a bit more time. It’s just the gears and going up and down in the gears throughout the innings [that change for T20s]. And just playing the percentages.”

Bangladesh allrounder Nasir Hossain faces corruption charges

The ACU has also charged seven others associated with Pune Devils during the 2021 season of the Abu Dhabi T10

Nagraj Gollapudi19-Sep-2023Eight people associated with Pune Devils franchise in the Abu Dhabi T10 tournament including Bangladesh allrounder Nasir Hossain have been charged by the ICC’ anti-corruption unit for alleged corrupt activities. The charges concern the 2020-21 edition of the tournament, which was played in Abu Dhabi.Apart from Nasir, the other seven charged are Krishan Kumar Chaudhary and Parag Sanghvi (two of the Devils’ co-owners), Rizwan Javed and Saliya Saman (two domestic players), as well as Ashar Zaidi (batting coach), Sunny Dhillon (assistant coach) and Shadab Ahamed (team manager). The 2021 edition was the last time the Devils were part of the tournament. They finished last with just one win in six matches in the Super League. The ACU was appointed as the watchdog for the T10 tournament by the Emirates Cricket Board, which pressed the charges. All eight have two weeks to respond from Tuesday.ESPNcrcinfo has learned that well-known corruptors in the game, who are high on the ACU list, were trying to infiltrate the Devils camp to influence their matches. However, those attempts, the ICC said in a media release on Tuesday, were “disrupted” by the ACU.In addition to charging the eight for not reporting any approach or any conduct that could be deemed corrupt as well as failing to cooperate in the investigation or attempting to delay it, the ACU has also laid several other charges. Sanghvi faces the charge of “placing bets on the results, progress” of a match. Zaidi, Javed, Saman and Dhillon have been charged with “being party to an attempt to fix, contrive or influence improperly matches or aspects of matches.”Javed and Saman also face a separate charge of “offering a reward in exchange for that player engaging in” corrupt practice. Among the eight, the 31-year-old Hossain, an all-format player who last represented Bangladesh in 2018, is the most high-profile name. He has been pulled up for not reporting receiving a gift worth more than USD 750, a mandatory rule in the ACU code.
