The emerging allrounder Mitchell Marsh has suffered a major setback after being told he must not bowl for the rest of this season due to a stress injury in his back. As a result, Marsh will not play in the remainder of the Commonwealth Bank Series but his time-frame for a comeback won’t be determined until he has scans in Melbourne on Saturday.Marsh, 20, has been part of Australia’s squad throughout the tri-series but could not oust his fellow allrounder Daniel Christian from the side. After a lengthy spell in the SCG nets on Thursday, ahead of Friday’s match against Sri Lanka, Marsh told the team physio Alex Kountouris of pain in his back and scans revealed the problem.”Mitch complained of quite significant lower-back pain during yesterday’s training session at the SCG,” Kountouris said. “After assessing him and considering his age we organised scans in Sydney last night that have confirmed our suspicions of a lower-back bone stress injury.
“He will have further scans tomorrow in Melbourne to determine the extent of the injury, which will help outline the period of rest required from cricket. We expect that he will not play as a bowler for the remainder of this season but will be in a position to provide further information once we have the results of tomorrow’s scans.”Michael Clarke will not return to the squad for the next CB Series fixture, against India in Brisbane on February 19, as he has not yet fully recovered from a right hamstring injury. George Bailey, the Tasmania batsman, has been added to the squad as a standby batsman. Ricky Ponting will continue to captain the team in Clarke’s absence.Victorian spinner Jon Holland, who was called up as backup for Xavier Doherty, will remain in the squad, though Doherty recovered from back spasms to play against Sri Lanka in Sydney on February 17.Clarke, who missed the game against Sri Lanka with a grade one hamstring strain, had initially said he hoped to be back for the Brisbane match, but will sit it out on advice from Kountouris. “Michael Clarke is progressing well in his recovery from a right hamstring injury but remains unavailable for selection in Brisbane,” Kountouris said. “His availability for the ODI in Hobart will be determined early next week.”
Bailey had captained Australia in the Twenty20s against India, without having played a game for Australia before, and has now been earmarked for a spot in the one-day team. “This selection is recognition that the national selection panel consider George the next batsman in line for Australian one-day selection,” Mickey Arthur, Australia coach and member of the selection panel, said.

Taylor blames batsmen's poor conversion rates for loss

Ross Taylor, the New Zealand batsman, has said the failure of New Zealand’s batsmen to convert starts is what has hurt them in their ODI series loss to Pakistan

Andrew Fernando at Seddon Park 03-Feb-2011Ross Taylor, the New Zealand batsman, has said the failure of New Zealand’s batsmen to convert starts is what has hurt them in their ODI series loss to Pakistan. Another poor batting effort in Hamilton, on Thursday, saw the hosts go down by 41 runs to give Pakistan an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series. New Zealand lost wickets at regular intervals, as the run chase faltered repeatedly just as a decent partnership appeared to be building.”Once again we put ourselves in a good position to push ahead in the dying overs but we kept losing wickets at crucial times,” Taylor, who captained the side on Thursday in the absence of Daniel Vettori, said. “Obviously the confidence is lower because of that.”New Zealand’s batting has failed all too frequently during the series, with the top five often unable to make an impact on the game. Even when the top order have got starts – as they did on Thursday with Taylor and Martin Guptill both hitting half-centuries – none of the New Zealand batsmen have been able to play a definitive innings to swing games in their favour. In five one-dayers, the hosts’ highest individual score has been 69, and Taylor identified that as the chief reason behind their losses.”At the moment we are getting ourselves into a good position and not capitalising. The batters can take a good look at the way the Pakistanis have played. Today, [Ahmed] Shehzad went on to score three figures, Misbah got ninety-odd in Napier and Hafeez got a hundred in Christchurch. Scores of sixty from Guptill and myself are alright sometimes, but when the team needs you, you’ve got to step up and score a ninety or a hundred like they have.”The confidence is not quite there and when the confidence isn’t there results don’t seem to go your way. I don’t think we are very far away to be honest. We just need to convert a couple of sixties to big scores and make sure we don’t keep losing wickets.”Taylor said his 69 was of little consequence because he was unable to see New Zealand level the series with a win. “I was happy to get a score but it doesn’t really mean much when you lose. I got myself into a position when I should have pushed on and I didn’t go on.”Taylor did reserve praise for his bowlers, however, who reined Pakistan in during the last ten overs after they had threatened to score in excess of 300. Pakistan were 243 for 5 after 45 overs, with three batting Powerplay overs yet to come, and Shahid Afridi and Umar Akmal at the crease. Canny variations and a slower short ball used to great effect prevented Pakistan from getting away at the death and restricted their total to 268 for nine in 50 overs. Pakistan managed only 25 runs for the loss of four wickets in their final five overs, and Taylor said his bowlers’ performance in the end overs boded well for the World Cup.”I was very happy [with the death bowling]. In Christchurch, we were a little predictable, but the way we changed the pace and manipulated the field today [Thursday] kept the batsmen guessing. New Zealand grounds in general are very small and you need to do that. The way they mixed up their pace was a positive we can take out of this, not only for the next match but for the World Cup as well. Some of the grounds in India are small too.”Jacob Oram and Kyle Mills were particularly impressive, and showed their experience during the batting Powerplay. The pair picked up two wickets apiece. “I’ve got to give it to Millsy and Jake and even Hamish [Bennett] for the way he bowled his last over. They were looking like scoring well over 300. It was probably a 280, 300 wicket; we were happy to chase that down and we should have got there.”New Zealand will play one more ODI against Pakistan, in Auckland on Saturday, and Taylor said they were eager to salvage what little momentum there is to be taken from the final encounter ahead of the World Cup, which begins on February 19. “There is some urgency to get some momentum with a win [on Saturday]. But I don’t think we are far away [from a winning performance].”

Sarwan rested as precaution – Ottis Gibson

Ottis Gibson, the West Indies coach, has clarified that Ramnaresh Sarwan’s exclusion from the side was to give him more time to recover fully from his injury, in time for tougher assignments

Cricinfo staff09-Mar-2010Ottis Gibson, the West Indies coach, has said that Ramnaresh Sarwan’s exclusion from the squad for the home series against Zimbabwe was to give him more time to recover fully from his injury, so that he could be ready for tougher assignments.”Ramnaresh Sarwan is very important to the team. He was with us in Guyana and seeing him around was very good. He had a serious injury with his back,” Gibson said.Sarwan was overlooked for the last three ODIs against Zimbabwe despite returning to first-class cricket and featuring in the Regional four-day competition. His omission raised several eyebrows especially after he made a century for Guyana last week, a knock that signaled a return to some level of fitness.”At the moment he could benefit from some more time to get fully ready. I don’t want to rush him back too soon. The last thing we want would be to rush him back and lose him for the long-term. It is a precaution to allow him to get 100% ready for the major international assignments we have later this year,” Gibson said.West Indies’s upcoming schedule includes the ICC World Twenty20 and a three-Test, five-ODI home series against South Africa later this year. The last three ODIs against Zimbabwe will be played at the Arnos Vale Stadium in St. Vincent, starting from Wednesday.

Ben Fisher’s suggestion of a bidding war for Daniel James paints ugly reality for Leeds United

[ad_pod ]

Transfer deadline day is criminally devoid of notable Hollywood stories considering the level of hype it generates. It seems that the entire premise of the day is built upon the fact that Manchester City once signed Robinho and attempted to hijack Manchester United’s bid for Dimitar Berbatov on the same day.

Just as City’s wealth and exponential rise from clinical mediocrity to elite domination is unprecedented, so was their transfer activity on August 31st 2008. Transfer stories further down the leagues seldom generate the same level of interest as those concerning Premier League clubs, but the culmination of Leeds United’s lengthy and well documented pursuit of Daniel James was a deadline-day story for the annals.

The promotion-chasing outfit were deprived of their primary target in dramatic circumstances, leaving Phil Hay and his multitude of loyal followers in a state of bewildered meltdown. Circumstances will surely dictate whether the Whites return for James in the summer: promotion will line Andrea Radrizanni’s pockets with mounds upon mounds of cash and Swansea’s awareness of the financial implications of promotion will naturally give them added power on the negotiating table.

But the pulsating 21-year-old may have already priced Leeds out of a move with his performance against Manchester City in the FA Cup just under ten days ago. A game which was broadcast live on the BBC, Swansea shell-shocked the quadruple-chasing giants in a captivating first-half. James was at the forefront of every incisive move the Swans constructed, leaving Nicolas Otamendi in a pool of treacle as he flicked the jets on his heels before racing forward at Olympian-esque speed.

It was the type of performance which, in-front of a national audience, can launch a player into stardom in one fleeting 90 minute slice of football. Those who had heard tales of the James to Leeds saga finally understood what all the fuss was about, and it’s fair to assume that Premier League clubs will have been watching with legitimate intrigue.

In the aftermath of proceedings, this is what Guardian journalist Ben Fisher had to say about the performance: ‘As for James, who was set to join Leeds in January for a fee rising to £10m only for Swansea to pull the plug at the 11th hour, eye-catching performances such as these could start a bidding war.’

While it would be rash to assume that top-flight clubs will be convinced to table bids for the Wales international based on the evidence of one performance, his ability to stand out in a clash of that magnitude underlined his credentials to grow above and beyond the Championship.

A recent report from the Daily Telegraph revealed that James has previously clocked up a personal best top speed of 36kph, just one kph shy of the official FIFA record set by Arjen Robben in 2014. Pace is one of the rawest and most unteachable virtues in football and it’s a commodity which clubs intensely desire, so there’s no doubt that Fisher’s verdict could turn prophetic in the summer window.

And James’ match-winning display for Wales against Slovakia on Sunday may well have intensified any lingering feelings of ruefulness that were spinning around Bielsa’s head.

At £10million Leeds could have snapped up a cunning acquisition in the winter window with plenty of resale value. That price-tag, however, looks set to be doubled at the very least by the basic supply and demand rule which drives the footballing market just like everything else.

As the acute awareness of a potential missed opportunity begins to dawn upon Leeds fans with a potential bidding war on the horizon, the underwhelming start to life in the top-flight Wolves’ chief pace merchant Adama Traore has experienced may offer some comfort.

That is about the only divergence to offer from the natural feelings of what might have been which emerged in light of James’ breathtaking FA Cup showing.

Leeds fans react to update on Jack Clarke’s illness

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Leeds fans have been reacting to an update on the fitness of Jack Clarke, who is set to return to outdoor training next week.

Clarke has been one of the most exciting parts of this exhilarating season at Elland Road, as the teenager looks more than capable of becoming a true Leeds great.

Born and raised in Yorkshire, it’s no surprise fans are very fond of the 18 year-old, and he has bagged two goals and two assists this season despite starting just four Championship games.

He was stretchered away from the sideline during the 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough though, and fans were extremely worried over the youngster’s future.

According to Phil Hay of the Yorkshire Evening Post, the winger was suffering from a virus, and has been doing indoor gym work this week, before returning to outdoor training next week.

This will come as a huge relief to Marcelo Bielsa, who is already without Kemar Roofe for an estimated eight weeks due to a knee injury.

Ex-Celtic man Larsson is Andy Robertson’s favourite player

Liverpool’s Andy Robertson has hosted a Q&A on Twitter and although he never donned the green & white hoops it is clear that his affiliation with Celtic runs deep. The 26-year-old grew up in Glasgow and was a boyhood Bhoys fan, and his connection to his roots still hasn’t been lost despite the success he has achieved in his career. In response to a fan asking him his favourite football memory the Scotland international pointed to the moment Henrik Larsson sent Celtic into the 2003 UEFA Cup final by scoring the winning goal away at Boavista.

The Glasgow outfit haven’t enjoyed success like that on the continent since, and given the left-back was only nine at the time it is easy to see why that was such a stand-out moment for him.

Added to that, there have not been many players like Larsson at Celtic Park, before or since, and watching him for several years must have been a fantastic memory from his childhood, and perhaps what inspired him to play football.

Robertson also added that the Swede is his favourite footballer of all time, and it will be interesting to see if he feels that way by the end of his career, having already shared a pitch with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

It is a shame Celtic fans missed out on the chance to see Robertson in action for their side, as it is clear to see he has gone on to become one of the best full-backs in the Premier League, though Kieran Tierney did also dazzle at times in his spell before making the move to Arsenal.

Newcastle have been offered the chance to sign Nikola Kalinic

According to Corriere dello Sport, Newcastle have been given the chance the sign Nikola Kalinic this month.

What’s the word?

The striker has had a tough few months since his controversial departure from the Croatia squad in the 2018 World Cup, as he has failed to find goalscoring form ever since.

That led Atletico Madrid to loan him out to Roma this season, but after six appearances and no goals, he is set to return to Spain, with the club now offering him to the Magpies.

Newcastle are reportedly interested in the 31-year-old, with the wait now to see whether Kalinic is keen on a move back to the Premier League, having played for Blackburn between 2009-2011.

He has turned down moves to Genoa and Verona which indicates he is keen to move away from Italy, and that could enhance Steve Bruce’s chances of signing him.

Big gamble

Kalinic earned a move to Atletico Madrid in a £13.5m deal after producing nine goal contributions for Milan in 31 appearances in 2017/18, but he has often been a backup option in Spain.

His return of four goals in 24 outings the following campaign explains why he is now out of favour under Diego Simeone, but it should also act as a warning sign to Newcastle.

A football legend: Can you get over 80% on this Gazza quiz? Find out now…

Bruce’s side is in desperate need of a goalscoring striker after netting just 20 goals in 21 league matches, with big-money signing Joelinton falling way below the standard required with one strike this term.

Worse still, no forward in the squad has scored more than once this season and that means they are in need of a striker with a proven track record in front of goal – preferably a player currently high on confidence.

Now rated at £7.65m, there is nothing to suggest Kalinic would provide what they need as he hasn’t scored since December 2018. His last spell in England was also a bit of a disaster with 13 goals in 53 games, though that was some time ago.

In other transfer news, there has been a setback via the injury to Jack Colback, which means he will be unable to leave the club on loan this month.

Manchester United fans wished their club had signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang instead of Romelu Lukaku

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United fans have taken to Twitter to slam their club for signing Romelu Lukaku instead of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, after the Gabon international hit a match-winning double against Tottenham in the north London derby.

The brace takes the former Borussia Dortmund man’s tally to 10 Premier League goals this season, where he now tops the scoring ranks ahead of Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero.

On the other hand, a player who cost significantly more than Aubameyang in Romelu Lukaku has spent more time falling over his own touch this season than finding the back of the net, and Red Devils’ supporters aren’t happy that their club signed the Belgian instead.

United’s faltering £75m striker has scored just five goals this season, although his goal against lowly Southampton did help take the club a point clear of Leicester into seventh.

England fans react to Dier’s performance against Switzerland

Tottenham Hotspur fans continued to see a number of their players star for England during the international break, even seeing another member of their squad captain the side.

With Harry Kane sitting on the bench for the start of England’s 1-0 friendly victory over Switzerland, Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate handed the captain’s armband to his club colleague Eric Dier.

The 24-year-old has become a regular in the England set-up during recent seasons, earning a total of 34 caps, but many fans were not impressed by his performance at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium.

In a scrappy and disappointing match, Dier struggled to catch the eye although England brought an end to their run of three consecutive defeats by sealing victory thanks to Marcus Rashford’s second-half volley.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”291236″ player=”12034″ title=”Jose Mourinho Has Turned Into Arsene Wenger”]

Fans were understandably disappointed with the display from the Three Lions though and the midfielders in the side attracted particular criticism, with Dier regularly selected as the man to point the finger at.
