WCL matches moved out of Voorburg

The pitch at the Westvliet ground in Voorburg, which was approved by the ICC in May as Netherland’s third venue to gain ODI status, was deemed unfit following feedback

Cricinfo staff07-Jul-2010The ICC has moved two matches of the ongoing World Cricket League Division One tournament in the Netherlands from Voorburg, where they were originally scheduled, to the Excelsior Cricket Club in Schiedam. The pitch at the Westvliet ground in Voorburg, which was approved by the ICC in May as Netherland’s third venue to gain ODI status, was deemed unfit following feedback. The matches moved are the Canada V Kenya game on Friday and the fifth/sixth place play-off on Saturday.”The decision to move the matches from Voorburg to Schiedam has been taken by the event technical committee after due consideration and consultation following feedback and reports we received on the current state of the pitches at VCC from the match officials, team managements and the ICC’s own pitch consultant,” tournament director Rob Kemming said. “We want to provide the players with the best available playing surfaces which I think Excelsior Cricket Club will now be able to offer.”Voorburg has, thus far, hosted three ODIs this tournament, with two won by the side chasing. Schiedam, as a result of the move, will become the fourth venue in the Netherlands to host an ODI.

Leeds suffer transfer blow

Leeds United have been dealt a huge setback in their pursuit of long-time target Nahitan Nandez…

What’s the word?

The Yorkshire outfit have regularly been linked with a move for the Cagliari midfielder, having been mooted during the summer window, as per L’Unione Sarda (via Sport Witness).

Director of football Victor Orta was even said to have flown out to Sardinia to try and strike a deal.

And earlier this month, other reports from Italy suggested that the Whites were ‘leading the race’ to sign the 26-year-old before deadline day on January 31st.

However, Leeds have now been dealt a late blow with just eight days to go as financial heavyweights Newcastle United have entered the race, according to Tuttosport.

After their takeover earlier in the season, the Magpies have huge backing from the Saudi Public Investment Fund, making them fierce competitors to Nandez’s signature, especially as there is a lack of funds at Elland Road.

“They don’t have fortunes to throw around at the moment,” recently claimed transfer insider Dean Jones to GIVEMESPORT this week.

Perfect for Bielsa

Thus, this latest development will come as a massive blow to Bielsa and Leeds, not at least because they are absolutely desperate to get in reinforcements for the engine room.

They have not signed a midfielder since January 2018, when Adam Forshaw joined from Middlesbrough, which is rather damning in itself, whilst Bielsa will be without the services of star anchorman Kalvin Phillips until March, at the very earliest.

Nandez would be an astute addition and one that is perfect for the Argentine’s tactical system. He certainly fits the atypical profile.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-lufc-transfer-rumours-gossip-bielsa-orta-radrizzani-elland-road-updates” title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

As we’ve previously outlined on Football FanCast, the Uruguay international would be something of a dream signing for Bielsa.

Standing at a diminutive 5 foot 7, the midfield dynamo is a powerful and bustling presence in midfield, leading to him being dubbed a “machine” by Serie A expert Conor Clancy.

This season, he’s averaged 2.3 aerial duels, 1.9 tackles and 1.4 dribbles per league outing (via WhoScored), which suggests he’s not just a ball-winning beast but one that can quickly get up the pitch.

But Leeds simply won’t be able to compete with the Magpies, who splashed a whopping £25m on Chris Wood just to get him in time for their clash at Watford last week and then Elland Road on Saturday afternoon.

It paid off with Eddie Howe’s men securing just their second win of the season. They will be able to offer Cagliari a better fee and the player a better financial package, so it seems as if Bielsa and co may well struggle to land one of their key targets.

On the above evidence, this will surely leave the 66-year-old absolutely livid as his club are no closer to additions this month, especially after previously insisting to sign Nandez.

AND in other news, Bielsa could land his own Conor Gallagher in Leeds swoop for “silky” 15-cap sensation…

Winning starts for Lahore Lions, Multan Tigers and Sialkot Stallions

Kamran Akmal and Aizaz Cheema starred with bat and ball respectively to help Lahore Lions sink Quetta Bears in the opening fixture of the RBS Twenty20 at the National Stadium in Karachi. Kamran made 68 in Lahore’s 196 but Quetta’s response was so meek, they failed to reach 100. An opening stand of 44 was the launchpad for Kamran and his brother Umar Akmal to shape a stand of 62 for the third wicket. Kamran added 38 with Kashif Siddique and remained unbeaten, hitting eight fours and a six in his knock. Cheema, the right-arm seamer, sliced through the top order to leave Quetta reeling at 24 for 6. They never recovered from that position, limping to 91 for 9. Cheema finished with 4 for 17.The day-night fixture at the same venue was a closer affair, with Multan Tigers beating Peshawar Panthers by 22 runs. It was a commendable fightback by Multan after they were reduced to 23 for 4, recovering to 146. Jannisar Khan did the early damage for Peshawar, before the lower order led the fightback. The 58-run stand for the seventh wicket between Naved Yasin and Mohammad Hafeez was the best of the innings. Yasin top scored with 35 while Hafeez remained on 32. Peshawar began very confidently with the openers adding 48 before it all went downhill. Hafeez and Zulfiqar Babar (4 for 26) shared the bulk of the wickets to bring Multan back in the game. Israullah scored 48 but after his dismissal, in the 14th over, the match slipped further away from Peshawar and they were ultimately bowled out for 124.

Sialkot Stallions held their nerve in a cliff-hanger to overcome Karachi Zebras by four runs in the final game of the day at the National Stadium. The Zebras were favourites to finish it off as the rampant association between Khurram Manzoor and Faisal Iqbal, which had realised 125 runs in 82 balls, had to knock off 14 off 1.2 overs to finish the game. That was when panic set in, as both batsmen departed to run-outs off consecutive balls to throw away the initiative. Fourteen off six, with two new batsmen at the crease, became five required off the last ball, a task that proved too steep for Akbar-ur-Rehman as the canny Rana Naved-ul-Hasan dismissed him LBW to seal the thriller. The win was earlier set up by a strong batting effort, led from the front by the captain Shoaib Malik, who was risk-free and effective at the same time, striking just three fours in a 44-ball 67. Abdul Razzaq chipped in with a quick 38 as the score swelled to 171, despite the effort of Anwar Ali whose 3 for 24 had kept things quiet at the start. Mohammad Asif did likewise for Stallions, before Manzoor and Faisal nearly spoiled the day for the visitors, but only nearly.

Siddons aims for more consistency

Bangladesh are expected to make two changes to their side for the second Test against England at Dhaka on Saturday, as their coach seeks a higher level of discipline with both bat and ball

Andrew Miller in Dhaka19-Mar-2010Bangladesh will make two changes to their side for the second Test against England at Dhaka on Saturday, as their coach, Jamie Siddons, seeks a higher level of discipline with both bat and ball following their 181-run defeat in Chittagong last week.Their new-ball bowler, Shadahat Hossain, has been dropped to make way for Shafiul Islam, while Aftab Ahmed’s place at No. 4 has been taken by the uncapped Jahurul Islam, who joined the squad on the eve of the first Test following Raqibul Hasan’s shock “retirement” from international cricket.”This was definitely a moment I have looked forward to since I became a cricket player. The dream of playing cricket at Test level has always been my chief motivation,” said Jahurul. “I have been in good form coming into the national team and I will take the confidence of the runs I had scored into the Test match.”Meanwhile Raqibul’s potential return to the team has been delayed after he was handed a three-month suspension by the board despite Siddons being optimistic that a decision that he described last week as “rash and foolish” would soon be forgotten.”We’ve spoken to him, but it is still up to a board decision to release him back to play,” said Siddons. “That’s not happening yet so he’s left his run a little bit late. I would have had him back no problem but there’s a few little delays happening. Hopefully we’ll have him back for the England tour and the Asia Cup.”After a torrid start to the Chittagong Test, in which Bangladesh slumped to 51 for 3 after conceding a hefty 599 for 6 declared, the team settled down to produce three decent days of Test cricket, with their batsmen amassing 627 runs across their two innings, while restricting England to 209 for 7 second time around. However, Siddons remains frustrated by such peaks and troughs, and wants an improved focus at Dhaka.”The one thing we’re aiming for is to be consistent,” said Siddons. “All of our top order – apart from our No. 4 position – are centurions in Test cricket now, and they have all made them in the last four months. But we’re still having Mahmudullah making a fifty then nothing, Tamim [Iqbal] 80 then nothing, Shakib [Al Hasan] nothing then a score. To get scores of 400 you need more consistency than that.”To make 630 over two innings against England was a reasonable effort, but we’re still probably 150 short. Our players are all confident of performing at this level and they’ll be confident of performing on that wicket. We just need them to put it together in the same match. That’s what England did to us, and it’s what we need to do back to them if we want to be successful.”We bowled, I think, nine maidens in 145 overs [138.3],” said Siddons. “It’s ridiculous, and it’s not good enough. Test cricket should be a game where you have to work a lot harder for your runs, but we couldn’t bowl one side of the wicket, and when we wanted to bowl at the wickets we couldn’t do that either. We also need to make more runs in the first innings. We batted on probably the flattest day, and only made 296, and that probably wasn’t anywhere near enough.”One aspect of Bangladesh’s performance that will change, however, will be their decision if they win the toss. At Chittagong, Shakib called correctly but chose to field first, a move that Siddons later admitted was the wrong one. This time, with another spin-friendly surface in prospect, there’s no doubt that they be aiming to put a score on the board first-up.”If the wicket plays the way we expect it to, and day one should be flat, if we win the toss we will bat,” said Siddons. “And if we do bowl I hope we put the ball in better areas and make them work a little harder for their runs. I expect it to turn a bit more towards the end of the game, because the footmarks play a bigger part on this wicket. Hopefully it will turn from day one, but we won’t be taking that risk. For me, as usual, it’s about us playing our game as well as we can,” he added. “I’ve got no expectations, I just want our players to play well. Each day is different, so our expectations change every day, according to the situation of the game. But I expect us to play pretty good cricket. It’s our home conditions, and we played reasonably well at Chittagong, but we’ll need nearer 700 [runs in the match] to win the game here.”Bangladesh 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Junaid Siddique, 4 Jahurul Islam, 5 Mahmudullah, 6 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 7 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 8 Naeem Islam, 9 Abdur Razzak, 10 Shafiul Islam, 11 Rubel Hossain.

David Turnbull drops Jota transfer claim

Celtic midfielder David Turnbull has dropped a claim regarding Jota’s potential permanent switch to Parkhead.

What’s been said?

In recent comments cited by the Daily Record, the 22-year-old Scotland international suggested that he and his teammates would love to see the Benfica loanee make a permanent move to Celtic in the January transfer window, as he and his colleagues have been highly impressed with the impact the winger has had during his short time in Glasgow thus far.

The report goes on to state that Ange Postecoglou’s side do hold an option to make the Portugal U21 international’s temporary deal a £6.2m permanent move this season, and Turnbull is clearly of the belief that the 22-year-old would be well worth the money.

Speaking about Jota’s transfer situation, the midfielder said: “We hope that he signs, but it’s up to them and the club to decide that. I’m sure the boys would be keen on him doing that anyway.

“He seems to be enjoying life in Glasgow, on the pitch you can see that. And away from the pitch, he seems to be enjoying it as well – apart from the weather. He seems to be loving life. Jota’s been absolutely flying and we are pleased for him.

“From the first minute he’s been excellent both on and off the ball and he’s been doing what he needs to do. He’s chipping in for the team by scoring goals and that has been excellent. It’s great for him and it’s great for the side.”

Fans will be delighted

Considering just how impressive Jota has been since his arrival at Parkhead back in August, the news that Turnbull and his teammates appear to very much be in favour of their club sealing a deal to sign the forward on a permanent basis is sure to have delighted the Celtic fanbase.

Indeed, over his 10 Scottish Premiership appearances this season, the £3.15m-rated man has already scored five goals, registered four assists and created two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of three shots and making 1.5 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the winger average a SofaScore match rating of 7.39, ranking him as the joint fifth-best performer in the top flight of Scottish football.

The £7.1k-per-week forward has also been in excellent form for the Hoops over his five Europa League appearances, scoring two goals, providing two assists and creating four big chances for his side, metrics which have seen him average a SofaScore match rating of 7.40.

As such, it would indeed appear as if Jota would be well worth the reported £6.2m he’d cost Celtic to sign permanently this winter, while the prospect of the winger remaining at Parkhead beyond the end of the current campaign is certainly something that will delight Bhoys fans.

Celtic interested in January move for Mooy

Celtic are interested in a deal to bring Aaron Mooy to Parkhead in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a recent report by the Daily Mail, who claim that the former Huddersfield Town, Brighton & Hove Albion and current Shanghai SIPG central midfielder is Ange Postecoglou’s number one transfer target ahead of the upcoming winter market.

The report continued to relay comments made by the 31-year-old regarding the management style of the Celtic boss, with the duo having worked together previously with the Australian national side.

In his remarks concerning the 56-year-old, Mooy said: “He’s intimidating, but he’s a very good coach. The way he wants to play football, I want to play like that as well.”

Nicholson must move

Considering just how impressive Mooy has been since joining Shanghai SIPG, in addition to the fact that Postecoglou’s first-team squad is currently lacking a considerable amount of depth in the middle of the park, the argument that the midfielder would be something of a dream signing for Michael Nicholson to get over the line in January is a rather easy one to make.

Indeed, over his five CFA Super League appearances so far this season, the £6.75m-rated man has already bagged one goal, registered one assist and created three big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.2 shots and making 1.4 key passes per game.

The player who David Wagner dubbed a “top-class” talent has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 36.4 passes, one tackle, 0.4 interceptions and winning three duels per fixture.

These returns have seen the £60k-per-week midfielder average a SofaScore match rating of 7.24, ranking him as Shanghai SIPG’s joint fifth-best performer in the Chinese top flight.

Furthermore, aside from his impressive form in China, Mooy’s 96 matches in the Premier League, 46 fixtures in the Championship and 21 games in the Scottish Premiership also mean his signing would bring with it a considerable boost to the experience levels within the Celtic midfield.

As such, it would indeed appear highly advisable for Nicholson to do all he can to secure the signing of the 31-year-old midfielder this winter, as Mooy could well be one of the final pieces of Postecoglou’s puzzle at Parkhead.
