Steve Bull issues Wolves manager verdict

Wolves were shocked to the core as a football club when they found out that Nuno Espirito Santo would be leaving after four successful years, and legend Steve Bull has exclusively given his verdict to The Transfer Tavern on reports that they could name his successor within three weeks.

There have been several managers linked with the job but whoever does get handed the reigns will have to build upon the solid foundations that Nuno left as well as adding a few quality additions this summer.

It appeared to have gone a bit stale at Molineux this season as Wolves fell drastically from back-to-back seventh-place finishes all the way down to 12th as well as shipping 52 goals and only scoring 36.

Wolves’ hierarchy will be hoping for a swift appointment so the new manager has a full pre-season and transfer window to mould the team into his own but Bull feels it may still take weeks to find the right manager, he told The Transfer Tavern:

“I’ve read in the paper that they’re going to make an announcement in the next 2-3 weeks, so they must have somebody lined up but who knows?”

It appears that former Benfica manager Bruno Lage is an early contender for the job given his nationality and links to Jorge Mendes, who always has a large say at what happens at Wolves.

There have been reports that one of the reasons that Nuno decided to walk away from Wolves was because of a lack of funding he was set to receive this summer despite the squad needing obvious additions.

LFC fans fume at Alexander-Arnold update

A number of Liverpool supporters have been left bemused by a “horrendous” update regarding Trent Alexander-Arnold’s hopes of playing for England at Euro 2020.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a meteoric rise at Anfield, going from academy hopeful to one of the world’s best full-backs in the space of several years. While Alexander-Arnold’s form hasn’t been consistently great this season, he has been magnificent since being left out of England’s squad back in March.

[freshpress-quiz id=“355458″]

The right-back has been one of Liverpool’s best players in that time and it was his pinpoint corner which allowed Alisson to memorably head the winning goal away to West Brom on Sunday. Alexander-Arnold’s all-round display was impressive, defending doggedly and producing consistent quality in the attacking third of the pitch, delivering five key passes and winning one tackle.

Despite this, The Athletic’s David Ornstein claimed that the youngster still looks likely to miss out on Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Euros. He wrote:

It is evident that Southgate wants his full-backs to show strong defensive qualities alongside their attacking instincts and there appear to be reservations over Alexander-Arnold’s ability to strike that balance as well as he believes the other candidates for the position are able to.

Although the door is not closed on the 22-year-old Liverpool academy graduate and the Football Association very much envisages him being part of its’ set-up in the future, it is understood to be improbable that he forces his way into this summer’s plans barring injuries or a change of heart.

It is an update which has left many Liverpool fans baffled – some of those not of a Reds persuasion will no doubt be feeling similar – with a number of them providing their thoughts on Twitter.

Liverpool: Fans desperate to sign Vlahovic

Some Liverpool supporters are desperate for the Reds to snap up Fiorentina star Dusan Vlahovic this summer following a fresh update on his future.

While much of the talk this season has understandably revolved around Liverpool’s centre-back woes, that has been far from their only issue.

It could actually be argued that their wastefulness in front of goal became even more problematic as the campaign went on, with the likes of Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino well below their best.

[freshpress-quiz id=“355458″]

Fortunately, it didn’t cost Jurgen Klopp’s side in the end, with a third-place finish sealed on Sunday, but the manager may still be eyeing up summer reinforcements in attack.

One player who has been linked with a move to Anfield in the summer is Vlahovic, who has taken Serie A by storm in 2020/21, scoring 21 goals in 37 appearances for Fiorentina.

According to Corriere dello Sport [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter], the Reds are still keen on signing the 21-year-old, although a big offer will likely need to be made to prise him away.

Saints fans slam U23 result

Southampton fans are livid after their U23 side lost 7-1 to Leicester City on Monday.

It has not been the best few days for the St Mary’s outfit. On Sunday, they were defeated 1-0 by the Foxes at Wembley in the F.A Cup semi-final with a pitiful performance. Despite what was a massive occasion, they failed to even muster up a single shot on target (SofaScore). Quite frankly, that just isn’t good enough.

On Monday, their development squad faced the East Midlands side’s equivalent. Although it was only 2-1 at half-time, they ended up being defeated by six goals. The result now means Southampton are bottom of the Premier League 2 South section, having won just four matches so far this season in 22 outings (FlashScore).

The result was shared by the club’s official Twitter account, and it attracted plenty of attention from the Saints supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their disgust at the outcome.

Let’s see what the Southampton fans had to say below

Rangers can sign their own VVD in Doekhi

Rangers have been linked with Vitesse centre-back Danilho Doekhi recently and he could prove to be Steven Gerrard’s own version of Virgil van Dijk at Ibrox should he join this summer.

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, Rangers, Newcastle United and Fulham are all in the race to sign the 22-year-old defender, who has been a big part of Vitesse’s impressive campaign in the Eredivisie so far this season.

It has been previously reported that the defender would be available for just £1.5m this summer, as his contract with the Dutch side is set to expire at the end of next season, so he could prove to be a bargain signing for the Light Blues this summer if they can convince him to make the move to Ibrox.

Rangers’ own VVD?

When Rangers’ Old Firm rivals Celtic signed Van Dijk from FC Groningen in 2013, he was just 21-years-old and like Doekhi, was a prominent part of the Netherlands’ U21 squad.

The towering centre-back cost the Hoops just £2.6m, and has, of course, gone on to establish himself as one of the best defenders in world football after impressive spells with Southampton and Liverpool, finishing second in the 2019 Ballon d’Or voting after helping Liverpool win the Champions League.

Doekhi, who is a former Ajax youngster, has already made 90 appearances for Vitesse and has been impressive so far this season, averaging a solid 6.92 rating for his performances in the Dutch top-flight.

In 30 league games this season, Thomas Letsch’s side have conceded just 28 goals, which certainly suggests that Doekhi could help Gerrard’s side improve on their incredible defensive record this season.

The 22-year-old centre-back certainly looks set for a big future in the game and there is no reason why his career can’t follow a similar trajectory to Van Dijk’s should he make the switch to Ibrox this summer.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

Therefore, considering his talent and his reported asking price, sporting director Ross Wilson must do everything he can to sign him for Gerrard’s side this summer, as he could prove to be a superb addition.

Keane given glowing recommendation

Roy Keane has the ‘personality’ required to lead Celtic going forward, according to former Hoops manager Martin O’Neill.

O’Neill, who led Celtic to three Scottish titles and a UEFA Cup final over five years in Glasgow, was speaking to BBC Scotland Sportsound.

Betting was suspended on Keane’s potential appointment on Friday, but The Times reported two days later that the Manchester United legend was ‘unlikely’ to take up the post.

O’Neill seems to fear that it would be a mistake to overlook the 49-year-old, who has worked under the ex-Hoops boss as assistant manager in the Republic of Ireland and Nottingham Forest setups.

£30m Champions League prize on the line for Celtic

“Next season is really big because it’s automatic qualification for the Champions League,” O’Neill said.

“That’s a massive extra prize. It’s the 30 million. Maybe it bolsters the argument that Celtic are taking their time – that whoever is in there is able and capable of facing Rangers in the big contest.

“Roy Keane’s got the personality, for a start. A massive player, iconic figure in the game. He’s also very strong-willed. But he’s got the capacity to motivate the players.

“Roy’s learned a great deal over the years. Dermot [Desmond, Celtic’s principal shareholder] is a strong-willed man himself. He’ll know what is necessary.”

Keane has been out of the managerial hotseat since 2011, when he left Ipswich Town.

Whoever succeeds Neil Lennon at Celtic Park faces a daunting task. The Hoops trail their arch-rivals Rangers by a full 20 points in the table, and Steven Gerrard’s men have not lost a league game all season.

Transfer Tavern verdict

With £30m potentially on the line as O’Neill has outlined, Celtic probably shouldn’t be taking this big a gamble on their next manager.

Eddie Howe, who did a remarkable job at Bournemouth and is now the favourite for the job, would appear a more sensible appointment, given his impressive track record at Premier League level in recent times.

In other news, what will the new boss have to say about this potential transfer?

Celtic: Dane Murray is one to watch

This season has been a torrid affair for everyone at Celtic, no less than Neil Lennon.

Their capitulation this term led to his departure and there were no shortage of reasons as to why he left Parkhead.

They have lost their dominance on Scottish football and performances, certainly from a defensive point of view, have been lacklustre.

Though, one issue lying slightly beneath the surface is a lack of minutes for their younger players. Cameron Harper has left the club while Karamoko Dembele could follow him through the exit door this summer when his contract expires.

As a result, a host of their talented reserve players have headed out on loan. Luca Connell is spending the second half of the campaign on loan at Queen’s Park while talented Norwegian Leo Hjelde is with Ross County until the climax of the season.

The centre-back has already been compared to both Virgil van Dijk and Kristoffer Ajer but his development for now, is clearly best suited away from the Hoops.

One player who has earned the trust of coaches at Celtic, however, is Dane Murray. Another 17-year-old defender, he is now training with the senior team.

There is no loan spell in the pipeline for Murray but such is his immense potential that he’s already getting used to his surroundings among the first team squad at Lennoxtown.

He has trained under John Kennedy on a number of occasions now, a period he’s described as “brilliant.”

After penning new terms with Celtic, Murray spoke this month about his development and transition to playing alongside more experienced players.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-howe-favre-edouard-desmond” title= “Read the latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

“Everything about your game comes on more when you train with the first-team,” he began. “The standard and intensity are much higher. Everyone helps you along every step of the way and they’re constantly giving you information. They just want the best for you really.”

The teenager is clearly being guided by the right people and he has been extremely keen to learn from someone like Ajer.

The Norway international came to Scotland as a teenager and has developed into one of Celtic’s key players.

“You also have Kris Ajer who came in at 17 and look at him now. The change he’s made has been brilliant,” Murray explained.

“Then you have the club captain Scott Brown. What he’s done in his career has been brilliant and I can only hope for even half of that,” he added.

It’s not just the age at which Ajer and Murray broke into the set-up that’s similar, however. The latter started out as a midfielder and is still very much capable of playing further forward, as well as in defence.

Ajer has played in a holding role in the past and has also performed admirably at full-back. Versatility like that, particularly at a young age, is a very useful asset to have.

With that in mind, it might make the transition to first team life a little smoother for Murray.

Unlike Hjelde, he has been trusted to stay at the club and develop. That can only be a good thing.
