Nevin and Franklin star for Wellington

Chris Nevin and James Franklin make an odd couple – the former short, stocky and with a batting approach which mixes urgency and pugnacity; the other tall, more languid and more fluent, an easy shot-maker

Steve McMorran22-Nov-2000Chris Nevin and James Franklin make an odd couple – the former short, stocky and with a batting approach which mixes urgency and pugnacity; the other tall, more languid and more fluent, an easy shot-maker.Again, the former keeps wicket, bats left-handed and has added to his rounded first-class experience which affords local seniority a number of one-day appearances for New Zealand. The other is right-handed, bowls probing medium pace and is in the infancy of a career which holds great promise. He has opened the bowling and the batting for New Zealand Under-19s but is still finding his way in the domestic first-class game. However, the two found much in common today when, as comrades in arms – partners in defiance – they achieved complementary though dissimilar half centuries for Wellington against New South Wales on the second day of a two-day match at the Basin Reserve.Nevin was Wellington’s top-scorer with 83, Franklin made 63 and in company they added 141 for the fifth wicket in a stubborn partnership which spanned lunch and tea and made Wellington’s total broad-shouldered after it had slumped. There was little swagger in their batting, more cold purpose and application but with their added impetus Wellington reached 337-6 in their first innings, replying to New South Wales’ first-day total of 387. Both teams batted into the 100th over.Wellington found themselves unable to overhaul New South Wales’ total today – could neither keep continuous pace with the demands of that target nor replicate the late onslaught which so much enlarged the visitors’ innings in the last hour yesterday. The result could be counted in New South Wales’ favour on the first innings. But in Nevin’s effort and in Franklins’, in Matthew Bell’s solid 46 and Richard Jones’ quickly-compiled 40, in Matthew Walker’s accomplished 53 late in the innings and Mark Jefferson’s 37, Wellington found some solace and some satisfaction. The match was designed to give them a leg up into the Shell Trophy series which begins next week and there was enough in the batting form of the middle order, the bowling performances of Mark Gillespie and Jeetan Patel, to make it a success in that regard.Nevin and Franklin came together in the 32nd over today, shortly before lunch and at the termination of Bell’s fine innings when Wellington were 100-4. They saw them through lunch at 119-4, to 173 by the afternoon drinks break and to 225 at tea when Nevin was 77 and Franklin 52.Then, as so often happens with long partnerships in which two players become almost co-dependent, Franklin was out and Nevin followed shortly afterwards.Franklin was caught by spinner Matthew Higgs from his own bowling when Wellington were 241 and Nevin fell to the same bowler two overs and eight runs later, caught by Shane Lee at first slip.Franklin had batted 192 minutes and faced 168 balls, hitting nine fours and Nevin had batted 170 minutes, received 146 balls and peppered the boundary rope with 13 fours. The partnership had occupied a total of 162 minutes.Nevin was quicker to his half century. He reached that mark in 98 minutes from 88 balls while Franklin laboured 182 minutes and took 157 balls. Both 50s included eight boundaries. The combination provided, throughout the day, a study in differing styles. Franklin, uses his height well, gets over the ball in his preferred cut shot and uses his long legs in controlling his front foot shots to the off side.Nevin has the short man’s habit of jumping to counter bounce and his shots are arguably more deliberate and more brutal. Before their partnership Bell and Jones had added 74 for Wellington’s second wicket after Michael Blackmore had been out without scoring to the fifth ball of the day. There were hazards in the early part of Jones’ innings but he showed nerve, eventually commanding the bowling to take 40 runs from 56 balls with six fours.Bell applied himself for almost two hours before lunch, taking 46 from 90 balls before being stumped by Greg Mail from Higgs.Later, Walker and Jefferson joined in an unbeaten partnership of 88 runs for the seventh wicket – a stand occupying little more than an hour. Walker finished 53 not out and had to his name, from 77 balls, a total of 10 fours and one six. Jefferson hit four fours in his supportive role.Higgs was the most successful of the New South Wales bowlers, taking 3-69 from 20 overs. The teams meet again tomorrow in a day-night match at the WestpacTrust Stadium. Play begins at 2pm.

Alasdair Gold details Spurs club advisory panel

After Tottenham Hotspur announced the establishment of a Club Advisory Panel and subsequent fan representation on the board (official), Alasdair Gold has relayed this news whilst lifting the lid on a crucial detail.

The Lowdown: Super League shame…

Tottenham faced unrelenting criticism for their involvement in the European Super League saga, with the Lilywhites opting to join the breakaway division as a founding member alongside Man United, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.

After the backlash from supporters, Spurs quickly announced their withdrawal from the project and have been attempting to rebuild bridges ever since.

ENIC out protests have occurred outside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the relationship between supporters and Spurs seems in a very delicate state.

The Latest: Gold relays Spurs board news after big announcement

In a move to garner trust with supporters, Tottenham officially announced and confirmed there will be fan representation on the board coupled with the establishment of a Club Advisory Panel.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest/” title=”Tottenham latest…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The head of this panel will be elected to the Tottenham Hotspur board as a non-executive and have full voting rights on all subjects brought forward affecting the club.

Gold, going into more detail, shares that these voting rights include all football-related matters on and off the pitch.

“The chair of the new Club Advisory Panel of fans, who will be elected to the Tottenham Hotspur board as a non-executive, will have full voting rights on matters decided by the board,” he explained on Twitter.

“For those asking, I’m told that also means the right to vote on all football matters put to the board.”

The Verdict: Good move, but still a way to go…

This move by the club will go some way to building bridges with supporters who have arguably lost a degree of trust after the ESL saga.

Tottenham fans being able to have a voice at the very top of Spurs could be huge in terms of major future decisions, especially Gold’s detail that the chair of this advisory panel will have full voting rights on every club topic, even matters on the pitch.

A step in the right direction to move on from what was a bleak week in the history of Tottenham, and Lilywhites can only hope this will go on to mark historic change.

ESL update could deal Spurs Kane blow

Tottenham Hotspur’s decision to join the European Super League could have some seriously dangerous consequences, especially when it comes their chances of keeping hold of Harry Kane.

This bombshell was revealed on Monday as Spurs became one of the ESL’s 12 founding clubs, something that has understandably gone down like a lead balloon across the footballing world.

Not only have supporters voiced their concerns but governing bodies like FIFA, UEFA and the Premier League among others have condemned the plans and are set to do all they can to stop the breakaway league from becoming a reality.

UEFA released a statement suggesting that they could pursue legal action over the proposals and insisted that those players involved in the new league would be banned from domestic, European and international competitions, whilst the rebel clubs could be booted out of these competitions too.

In addition to that, Spurs have also withdrawn from the European Club Association (ECA), which will only increase the prospect of them being unable to qualify for the Champions League or Europa League any longer.

The Lilywhites have been involved in one of the two European competitions for 11 straight seasons, and they made the UCL final in 2019. Daniel Levy’s decision to join the ESL takes away this privilege and two potential competitions that they could qualify for, and potentially win.

Kane’s future was already in doubt prior to this announcement, and will surely be in grave danger now, especially as he’s the England national team captain too.

[snack-amp-story url=https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-and-recent-gossip” title=”Read this week’s Spurs news, latest transfer rumours and more!]

The 27-year-old continues to break goalscoring records in England but ultimately, he has no silverware to back up what should’ve been an illustrious career so by limiting the competitions that Spurs play in, and potentially even risking their expulsion from the Premier League, Levy is playing a dangerous game if he wants the 219-goal striker to stay in north London.

In addition to that, if Kane stays and plays in the ESL, then his England career could well be over and that’s certainly something he will not want to lose as he has the potential of becoming the first Three Lions skipper to lift a trophy since Bobby Moore in 1966.

Gareth Southgate’s side have a chance to win the European Championships this summer, and barring any qualification issues, they could make a run at winning the World Cup in 2022 too, after reaching the semi-finals in 2018.

“I am looking forward to a really special couple of years with the Euros in the summer and then the World Cup in 2022,” revealed Kane back in October.

So Levy may well have just dealt Spurs a huge hammer blow in more ways than one, this news surely has Kane reeling in fury and that’s not a good thing when considering his long-term future in north London.

Of course, in any scenario where he chooses to leave in order to maintain his place in the England set-up, Kane wouldn’t be able to move to another Super League club as they too could see their players banned from representing their national teams.

However, there are still some huge clubs such as Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain who are not part of the breakaway and who could, in theory, still have the finances to purchase a player as good as Harry Kane. PSG have been linked with a move for Kane in the past too so a move to the French capital isn’t something that is beyond the realms of possibility.

If UEFA and co. get their way, Spurs will only have the ESL to play for and the fact that Spurs are one of the weaker sides of the Super League Founder Members makes it highly unlikely that they can win that competition either, so Kane is looking at a trophyless future, one where he can’t captain his country. Those factors will surely anger the Tottenham superstar and as a result, will put his future with the club in even more doubt.

Liverpool fans delighted at Van Dijk video

A number of Liverpool fans have been expressing their delight at footage of Virgil van Dijk making further progress in his injury recovery.

The Dutchman has been missing since suffering cruciate ligament damage back in October, following a dreadful challenge by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

It proved to be a massive moment in Liverpool’s season, with the Reds never the same from that moment on and their campaign slowly falling apart as each month has passed.

[freshpress-quiz id=“350790”]

Van Dijk was widely considered the best centre-back in the world before his injury, but his reputation has only grown since being out, such have been the Premier League champions’ struggles.

The 29-year-old is not expected to feature for the Reds until next season, but his much-anticipated return does appear to be edging closer all the time.

On Thursday, Van Dijk posted a video on Twitter showing him running at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre, with the Netherlands captain showing good mobility and seemingly in good spirits.

In other news, some Liverpool fans have been revealing their delight at seeing a Reds player back in training. Find out who it is here.

Rodgers must restore Soyuncu vs Saints

Brendan Rodgers can welcome defender Caglar Soyuncu back to the Leicester City fray ahead of the Foxes’ FA Cup semi-final showdown with Southampton.

The Turkish defender has missed the last two Premier League matches having tested positive whilst on international duty, both games the Foxes lost to Manchester City and West Ham United.

However, with the former SC Freiburg centre-back looking “terrific” in training according to Foxes boss Rodgers, he should be restored immediately to the Leicester backline against the Saints at Wembley.

Put simply, Soyuncu is one of Leicester’s best defenders and should not be elbowed out of the starting line-up in place of Daniel Amartey, who has been deputising in the Turk’s absence.

According to WhoScored, the two defenders are actually level on both tackles and interceptions per game in the Premier League at 0.9 and one respectively.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-leicester-city-news%2c-transfer-rumours-and-more-soumare-soyuncu-edouard-jakupovic-lookman” title=”Latest Leicester City news, transfer rumours and more… “]

Nevertheless, Soyuncu, who earns £45k per week at the King Power Stadium, excels in anticipating danger by racking up 3.7 clearances per game compared to Amartey’s two.

Meanwhile, the Turk continues to better his Ghanaian teammate on the ball, where he possesses far more confidence. The 24-year-old has a better pass success rate, whilst completing more passes per game than Amartey and also contributing a surprise 0.2 key passes.

Whilst it is clear to see that Soyuncu is a far more accomplished defender, his inclusion also produces tangible results.

In matches where the centre-back has played this season, Leicester have conceded just 0.96 goals per game in all competitions but with him excluded, that number shoots up sharply to 1.14.

As Leicester aim to restrict Southampton at Wembley and reach the FA Cup final, that added defensive solidarity is surely going to come in mightily handy.

Therefore, it seems an obvious choice for Rodgers to recall Soyuncu into the Leicester starting line-up for Sunday’s clash.

Liverpool must try to sign Grealish

Liverpool have once again been encouraged to make a move for Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish.

Speaking exclusively to Football Fan Cast, Dean Windass urged the Reds to make a move for the “exciting” £54m-rated midfielder.

It’s certainly advice that Liverpool should heed as they aim to recover from their disastrous 2020/21 title defence.

Although he is currently injured, Grealish is in the midst of a fantastic Premier League campaign. He currently has 18 goal involvements in the Premier League – six goals and 12 assists – form that has seen him be praised as a “God” at Villa by Windass.

It’s certainly an accurate assessment of the five-cap midfielder’s stature in the West Midlands considering that in the eight Premier League games that he has missed recently, Dean Smith’s men have won just two and scored just seven goals.

Interestingly, Grealish’s amount of goal involvements would put him third in the Liverpool squad behind just Mo Salah and Sadio Mane.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news%2c-transfer-rumours-and-more-gravenberch-keita-mane-williams-kabak” title=”Read the latest Liverpool news, transfer rumours and more…”]

After all, Liverpool have seen first-hand just how effective he can be in a match, with the England star having scored twice and notched three assists in Villa’s 7-2 thumping of the Reds back in October.

That is certainly the kind of creativity that Liverpool have been missing this season with Jurgen Klopp’s men having netted 17 fewer goals at this stage of the campaign than at the same point last season.

Should Grealish arrive at Anfield, his signing could go a long way in seeing the Reds get back on track from an attacking standpoint and would see them provide the likes of Mane and Diogo Jota with considerable competition on the left-flank.

Now at 25 years of age, Grealish has certainly morphed into a highly accomplished player in the top-flight of English football.

Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards really should consider Windass’ advice and bring him to Anfield in a summer swoop.

AND in more news, the Reds could make a costly error in swooping for this Barcelona star…

Why Rangers should sign Okumu

Rangers are reportedly considering a summer move for IF Elfsborg centre-back Joseph Okumu as they eye up potential replacements for Filip Helander in Steven Gerrard’s squad, with the Swedish international having been linked with a move away from Ibrox in recent weeks.

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, the Light Blues have made preliminary enquiries for the 23-year-old defender, as they prepare for the possibility of both Helander and Edmundson leaving this summer.

Helander has played a key role in Rangers’ title success this season and has earned admirers from the Premier League as a result, with both Leicester City and Aston Villa said to be keen on the former Bologna man.

Would he be a good signing?

After spending time in his home country Kenya, Okumu has had spells in South Africa and the USA before finding his feet in Sweden with Elfsborg.

Since then, he has made 34 appearances for the Allsvenskan side, in which he has contributed no goals and one assist.

The Kenyan international clearly had an impressive impact last season, as Elfsborg lost just two league games when he featured, which helped them to a second-place finish in the 2020 league table.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read this week’s latest Rangers news, transfer rumours and more!”]

When Okumu made the move to South Africa earlier in his career, a source at the club praised Okumu as one of the best signings the club made that year and praised the defender, saying:

“He spent few days with us training with us and did well to impress the coach. He is a young, talented boy destined for a great future in football.”

The 23-year-old could help realise that potential should he make the move to Rangers in the summer, although with the report suggesting that there has already been a £2 million bid for the youngster, it seems that he won’t come cheap this summer.

[freshpress-quiz id=“588789″]

However, the 6 foot 3 defender could well prove to be an excellent replacement for Filip Helander, so Ross Wilson and Gerrard should definitely look at bringing him to Ibrox ahead of next season.

No total, 11 pontos seria bom.

Vão entrar e fazer a diferença.

Everton face continued Bernard issue

Carlo Ancelotti faces a continued problem at Everton with Bernard after the Brazilian’s winter transfer to United Arab Emirates outfit Al Nasr collapsed on Deadline Day.

What’s the word?

According to the Liverpool Echo, negotiations between the Toffees and Al Nasr fell through in the final hours of the winter transfer market.

Everton had strived to offload the midfielder throughout the mid-season window as they looked to reduce a bloated wage bill, with Bernard earning £120,000-per-week but failing to establish himself under Ancelotti.

The Blues would have been due a fee as part of the deal for a player they signed for free in the summer of 2018, after landing Bernard following his release by Shakhtar Donetsk.

Bernard had appeared set to leave Goodison Park for Al Nasr after agreeing on personal terms with the Middle Eastern side, who entered into advanced negotiations with The Blues over the weekend, per Fabrizio Romano.

The value of the fee that Everton would have received is unclear, with previous reports claiming the Merseyside club valued Bernard at £9m but had agreed to a loan deal that carried a €5m (£4.5m) obligation to make the deal permanent in the summer.

Ancelotti has only started Bernard in two Premier League games this season and has elected to leave the 28-year-old as an unused substitute in 12 of his side’s fixtures to date.

A continued problem for Everton

Bernard failing to secure his move to Al Nasr on Deadline Day has left Ancelotti facing a continued problem at Everton, as the Italian clearly does not value what the Brazilian can bring to the side at Goodison Park.

But the Blues looked lost of forward vision during their 1-1 draw with Leicester City last month, as the Foxes were able to dominate the majority of the game as Ancelotti’s men sat in deep, trying to protect James Rodriguez’s deadlock-breaking strike.

Yet even once Youri Tielemans found a way past Jordan Pickford, via the England goalkeeper’s gloves, Ancelotti turned to Alex Iwobi and Gylfi Sigurdsson to inject a spark in his side, then introduced defender Seamus Coleman for top-scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Bernard was just left on the bench to watch the game, then was completely omitted from the matchday squad which lost 2-0 at home to Newcastle United on Saturday.

Anthony Gordon, who was a back-up against Newcastle, has now joined Preston North End on loan for the remainder of the season and that decision must see Ancelotti think again over his use of Bernard, as a recall has to be on the cards given the potential impact he could have.

Former England international Danny Mills lauds Bernard for what he is capable of with the ball at his feet, and – now his options are reduced – Ancelotti needs to see it on the pitch.

“He is different to the other attackers at Everton,” Mills told Football Insider. “He reminds me of Bernardo Silva at times. That sort of diminutive player with fabulous ability on the ball. He can pick a pass and dribble, but you have to get him on the ball in the right areas.”

If Ancelotti does not give Bernard the chance to gain a more pivotal role, the midfielder will only prove to be a continued problem and Everton’s Director of Football Marcel Brands will have to spend the coming months searching for a suitor willing who is willing to buy him.

AND in other news, the exit of a £28k-p/w dud is great news for a “gifted” Everton outcast
