West Ham fans go wild for Lingard news

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have gone wild for the latest update on their chase to sign Manchester United attacker Jesse Lingard this window.

Manager David Moyes is keen to bring the England international to east London on a permanent deal following a hugely successful 2020/2021 loan spell at West Ham.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 29-year-old bagged nine goals and four assists in just 16 Premier League starts over the second half of last campaign, but despite West Ham’s efforts, he didn’t join permanently in the summer window.

Instead, he chose to remain at his current club, a decision which has resulted in very little game time and broken down new contract talks as he now eyes a move away from Old Trafford.

The Daily Mirror, sharing an update on the situation, have now shared some very promising news out of West Ham.

According to their information, Lingard is now ‘ready’ to to leave United and ‘seal’ a permanent move to the Hammers – with manager Moyes and the club ‘determined’ to get it done before January 31.

West Ham fans go wild…

Flocking to this claim, given Lingard is now apparently ready to join, it’s little wonder some supporters believe this is a ‘very exciting’ development.

The Three Lions ace shone at West Ham last season and has been described as a would-be ‘massive signing’ for Moyes who could gift the club ‘another dimension’ (Paul Robinson, Football Insider).

There is little denying his coup would be a good move for Rob Newman and co with many Irons supporters certainly giving their thumbs up.

West Ham: Moyes provides full-back update

West Ham manager David Moyes has provided an update on the fitness of Aaron Cresswell, Ben Johnson and Ryan Fredericks as the east Londoners face a full-back crisis.

What’s the story?

Following the Hammers’ 2-0 defeat to Arsenal and ahead of their subsequently postponed fixture against Norwich City over the weekend, Moyes addressed the media and provided an update on the absent trio.

“I am hoping that maybe Ryan or Ben or Cressie [Cresswell] can get themselves available for us,” the Irons manager said. “It would help us in a period where we have some injuries and it looks like all the full-backs in the main are the ones getting injured or sent off.”

Right-back Vladimir Coufal has been included in the squad for West Ham’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against Tottenham but will miss the next Premier League match through suspension after being sent off at Arsenal on Wednesday night.

This leaves 28-year-old Arthur Masuaku as the Irons’ only available senior full-back. However, 20-year-old right-back Harrison Ashby came off the bench against Arsenal and impressed on his debut against Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League, which could form a pathway into the side for the youngster.

West Ham need full-back options

With a hectic festive schedule still set to be played, Moyes will need as many available options as possible, particularly in the full-back areas.

Should the likes of Cresswell, Johnson and Fredericks return in the near future, it will get West Ham fans buzzing again after their team’s recent dip in form.

Fredericks hasn’t featured for David Moyes’ side since their 2-0 win at Rapid Vienna in the Europa League last month and has only managed two minutes in the Premier League all season. However, both Cresswell and Johnson are regular fixtures in the side, with the latter working hard to maintain his place in the starting XI.

The 21-year-old right-back has been impressive this season, managing a run of eight consecutive starts in the Premier League before missing the trips to Burnley and Arsenal, and he will hope that a brief spell on the sidelines won’t halt his progress.

Moyes’ hopeful comments about having some, or possibly all, of his injured full-backs available for upcoming fixtures will at least give West Ham supporters a shot in the arm after a testing couple of weeks.

Porém, ele voltou a acusar o problema e virou desfalque no Corinthians.

Buoyant New Zealand seek encore

New Zealand snapped their winless streak on tour on Wednesday, and can savour a series victory if they keep their cool on Friday

The Preview by Jamie Alter in Colombo03-Sep-2009Match factsFriday September 4

Big PictureThe last statement Daniel Vettori made after New Zealand snapped their winless streak on tour with a tense victory on Wednesday was that there was still a game to go to clinch the short series. Vettori knows how much confidence his side can take from anything they win on tour.It was refreshing to see his face light up as he ran towards hat-trick hero Jacob Oram when New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by three runs. It has been a difficult tour for a side inexperienced in subcontinental conditions but the change in personnel for the Twenty20s seems to have infused life. There is no ignoring the key role Vettori himself played, slowing his pace and teasing with his loop to take 2 for 11 in four overs in a Man-of-the-Match effort, but this was a victory fashioned by more than one or two individuals and that gave Vettori the most pleasure. The batting was shaky but the fielding exceptional, proving decisive in the outcome. A series win beckons, if New Zealand can keep their cool again. For Sri Lanka, this was their third straight loss in this format, starting from the ICC World Twenty20 final. In all three defeats the batting has been a worry, especially the lack of contributions from the middle and lower-middle order. Kumar Sangakkara was left to rue another batting collapse after Tillakaratne Dilshan’s amazing attack on New Zealand’s bowlers set them on the way to victory. Dilshan aside, Sri Lanka had enough batting firepower but fell to a flurry of loose shots and were not able to forge partnerships. Sangakkara has put the pressure on his batsmen and demanded they evaluate themselves before the final game.Form guideSri Lanka LLLWW
New Zealand WLLWLWatch out for…Ross Taylor, who remains New Zealand’s cleanest hitter of the ball and showed his prowess with five fours and a six on Wednesday. Although not as breathtaking as Dilshan’s innings, it was Taylor’s knock that helped New Zealand to 141. With runs not forthcoming from Jacob Oram this tour, the visitors need Taylor to come up with the goods especially if the opening pair of Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder again fails to get going.
Mahela Jayawardene was run out by a superb direct his from Ryder in the first game, and that wicket set in motion a succession of dismissals. Jayawardene is in good enough form to play a match-winning hand – a couple sixes during training were a reminder of that – and he knows just how important runs from him are.Team newsIt is unlikely New Zealand will make any changes given that the unit they fielded on Wednesday won them their first match on tour. The lower-middle order was shaken up by Lasith Malinga, but the management should keep faith in them. Grant Elliott will keep Neil Broom on his toes.
New Zealand: (probable) 1 Brendon McCullum (wk), 2 Jesse Ryder, 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Jacob Oram, 6 Neil Broom/Grant Elliott, 7 Peter McGlashan (wk), 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Kyle Mills, 10 Shane Bond, 11 Ian ButlerSri Lanka’s batting let them down but they have no specialist middle-order players on the bench. Mahela Udawatte is primarily an opener, so Sri Lanka aren’t likely to change their current combination. The bowlers all did well, which means Isuru Udana and Kaushal Lokuarachchi should still warm the bench.
Sri Lanka: (probable) 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt & wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Chamara Kapugedera, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Gihan Rupasinghe, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Malinga Bandara, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Lasith Malinga.Stats and TriviaMalinga has moved into fifth place in the list of leading wicket-takers in Twenty20 internationals.Taylor’s 60 was his third half-century in Twenty20 internationals and he is New Zealand’s second-highest run-scorer in this format after McCullum.Quotes”A lot of guys don’t have the baggage of the Test series and another win now will hopefully give us some momentum for the rest of the tour, and confidence for everyone. That’s the most important thing in cricket.”
“He’s always been a good Twenty20 bowler and knows what he’s doing. He’s the one we have to really look at, how we’re going to score singles off him. We’re going to be talking about that.”

Loye consolidates Lancashire's advantage

ScorecardIn the 33 overs permitted by Jupiter Pluvius on the second day of the Roses match, Lancashire consolidated their position against Yorkshire, mainly due to Mal Loye’s aggressive half-century, his third of the season. The weather must be causing the Red Rose more concern than the opposition, though, as they may well be robbed of a victory they deserve if the famous Old Trafford weather prevails. After overnight rain, the start of play was scheduled for 11.30 and the times of the interval altered, the latter being akin to rescheduling the ports of call of the Titanic. The good ship did set sail at the amended time, but did not get much further. Lancashire began at 106 without loss, and in the first over Yorkshire struck their first blow, as Tom Smith, forgetting his admirable discretion of the previous evening, wafted his bat at a ball from Matthew Hoggard that moved away outside the off stump, and edged to the keeper. Much to his chagrin, he found himself returning to the pavilion for his overnight 40, his part in the day’s play already over.Yorkshire missed another chance soon afterwards, as Paul Horton, on 64, miscued a cut against the accurate Tim Bresnan and was dropped off a hard overhead chance by third slip. Horton celebrated his escape by settling into a fluent groove and looked quite in control of some pretty useful bowling when the rain came, after fifty minutes. There was a brief remission of rain, but it lasted only five minutes, and the major interruption came with Lancashire on 151 for 1. By then Horton had 84, and Loye, who had shown aggressive spirit, had 21.Rain on and off for several hours prevented a resumption until 5.20, by which time the sun was shining weakly and intermittently. Loye quickly showed aggressive intent, but was a little fortunate to miscue a pull off Amjad Shahzad clear of the field; later on he was to top-edge another pull of the same bowler which carried over the keeper for six. Horton, however, did not add to his 84, as he chased a rare leg-side ball from Bresnan and was very reluctant to leave the field on being given out caught down the leg side. He faced 161 balls and hit 11 fours.Loye and VVS Laxman saw out the day safely; the Yorkshire bowling worked hard and was quite accurate, but lacked the inspiration necessary to swing the balance of the match. Loye was strongest on the pull, and two men out for the shot was often insufficient. His 50, coming off 73 balls, contained eight fours and a six, a high proportion of boundaries. Laxman, on the other hand, favoured the delicate cut past the slips, and this pair took Lancashire into the lead with only two wickets down. They are now well placed to take a large lead and gain a much-needed victory, if only the rain would leave the soggy British Isles in peace.

Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse linked with Newcastle transfer

After picking up a red card and a three-game ban during their 3-1 Premier League defeat against Chelsea earlier this month, Southampton will welcome their club captain James Ward-Prowse back this weekend for their match against Watford after completing his ban.

However, it seems as though the club could potentially lose their star midfielder on a permanent basis during the upcoming January transfer window.

What’s the news?

It has recently been reported by Football Insider that Ward-Prowse is apparently a “firm target” for fellow Premier League side Newcastle United and their new owners in January to try and strengthen their midfield, given their poor start to the season.

After working his way through Southampton’s youth academy, Ward-Prowse has gone on to make 331 appearances for the Saints across all competitions, scoring 35 goals and providing 42 assists along the way, which is why we feel the Southampton fans would be concerned by the possibility of him leaving in January to Newcastle.

In addition to this, Ward-Prowse had played 90 minutes of all of Southampton’s Premier League games so far this season prior to him getting sent off against Chelsea, proving himself to be a vital cog in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad.

Back in the previous summer transfer window, the 26-year-old, who is currently valued at £28.8m according to Transfermarkt, was heavily linked with a move to Aston Villa, who reportedly put in an offer of £25m which was apparently rejected by Southampton.

After that, Ward-Prowse put pen to paper on a new five-year deal at Southampton, securing his long-term future at St. Mary’s and putting to bed any rumours of him leaving the club.

Taking this into account, Ward-Prowse isn’t likely to leave the club in January for a move to Newcastle given how he said that he is “not finished” at Southampton and still has “a lot left to give” to the club when he signed his latest deal.

Moving forward, even if Newcastle come in with a big offer for the Englishman, they would need a lot more than the financial aspect of things to get Ward-Prowse to leave his boyhood club that he clearly loves playing for.

Leeds eyeing Espanyol’s Raul de Tomas

Leeds United could sign an exciting upgrade on Patrick Bamford in Espanyol marksman Raul de Tomas.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days have suggested that Marcelo Bielsa’s side, along with fellow Premier League outfit West Ham, are continuing to follow the Spanish striker ahead of a potential move.

The report adds that Espanyol would demand a fee in the region of £38m to part ways with their talismanic striker, and that with his contract only expiring in the summer of 2026, they are under no pressure to let him go just yet.

Better than Bamford

While Bamford enjoyed a fine full season in the Premier League last term – he netted 17 goals in the competition – his injury-riddled campaign this year saw him well below his best.

In the five matches that he played, the England international bagged just once, while less than a third of shots per game actually found the target – an indication of his wayward finishing at times.

In contrast, De Tomas has started the new campaign on fire, netting six in 11, and being far more accurate with his attempts on goal – 1.7 of the 3.5 shots on average he takes actually finds the target.

And it’s not just in his finishing that the Espanyol man far outshines Bamford, also averaging more successful dribbles per game, and winning more duels per match too – the kind of all-round impact that Bielsa will surely love.

As per OptaJose, the Spaniard actually achieved a bit of history this season in La Liga with a very impressive feat that has been unmatched this century for his club side.

They revealed: “Raúl de Tomás has become the first Espanyol’s player in 21st Century to have recorded two different streaks scoring +4 #LaLiga games in a row in each one of them: the first one between January-February 2020 & the last one this October.”

De Tomas himself has revealed the kind of striker that he is, saying: “I am a pacey, competitive and technically gifted goal-scorer.”

The man with 96 senior goals to his name appears to be an upgrade on Bamford, and someone who could give Bielsa an added clinical touch up front.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has dropped a behind-the-scenes Leeds update…

Gayle blames the conditions

The West Indies captain Chris Gayle acknowledged that his side have little time to prepare for the second Test against England, on Thursday, but called on his side to adapt to the chilly conditions if they’re to square the series at Chester-le-Street.England headed to an impressively slick ten-wicket win at Lord’s yesterday, dismissing West Indies for 256 in their second innings. They collapsed meekly for 152 in the first innings and again in their second, when they lost their last five wickets for just 34 runs, and Gayle was at a loss to explain why.”It’s a tough one to actually answer,” he told PA. “It’s very disappointing, but we have to try and put that behind us now and have the self-belief to go out and get the job done in Durham. That will be in tough conditions, but we’ll just have to cope with it and make sure we are well-prepared. We are looking forward to it.”The tough conditions Gayle spoke of relate to the early start of this year’s summer season. With the Ashes acting as the main event, the ECB has had to shoehorn this brief two-Test series just before next month’s ICC World Twenty20, and the early cold conditions have unsurprisingly not been to West Indies’ liking. John Dyson, the coach, responded to criticism of his side’s body language when the team was seen with their hands thrust into their pockets, insisting that they were using hand warmers.”The majority of the time I was batting out there, that wind was hitting me in the eye and there was a lot of water in the eyes as well,” Gayle said. “It makes a big difference, but this is the disadvantage we have to cope with. You just have to tough it out and try to get the job done as well as possible.”I’ve never been in England so early for a tour, and the conditions are always going to be a bit different from later on in the summer. But we have to adapt,” he said. It would be nice if we get that opportunity to tour a bit later. There would be a lot more sunshine – that would be good.”Indeed, Gayle insists that the two sides “are very even-steven,” while stating that the difference between them had much to do with the conditions. However, West Indies struggled to cope with the moving ball, and in particular the bowling of Graham Onions who took seven wickets on debut.”We’ve had a bit of Onion, and it’s burned us in the eye,” Gayle said. “We hope we can stop that in the next Test match. He’s not express but he bowled well and hit the right areas.”You have to give credit to any bowler picking up five wickets on their debut.”

Johnson sets sights on Smith

Graeme Smith must have nightmares about facing Mitchell Johnson after the fast bowler broke both of Smith’s hands in separate incidents over the past three months. Friday’s first ODI in Durban will provide Johnson with another chance to bowl to Smith, who has been passed fit for the five-match series. It will be Smith’s first game since a rising delivery from Johnson struck him on the right hand in the Test at the same venue. Johnson said he was keen to get stuck into the South African captain once more on a bouncy Kingsmead pitch.”I’m look forward to the challenge again,” Johnson told . “It’s always good to get the opportunity to bowl with the new ball against an opening batsman like Smith. He’s such a great player. He’s a strong leader and his team look up to him. They will enjoy having him back in the squad and I’m looking forward to trying to get his wicket.”Smith will take over the reins from Johan Botha, who led South Africa to a 2-0 victory in the Twenty20 internationals. It could be a challenge lifting his side for the final leg of what has essentially been a four-month campaign against Australia but South Africa’s coach Mickey Arthur was confident the squad would be able to hit top gear.”We’ve prioritised what we want to get out of the series, and there’s a nice air around the squad,” Arthur said. “The guys are very fresh and looking forward to it. We’re getting a nice balance now. I’m very happy with the mix we have now.”Within our squad, we have two recognised spinners, and we have JP Duminy, who can bowl for us as well, so we’re starting to get quite a nice mix in terms of variation in our attack. And the return of Makhaya [Ntini] and Morne [Morkel] in our attack is really good because they give us variation of a different kind.”The return to the 50-over format, in which South Africa triumphed 4-1 in Australia, will be a change after the Twenty20 games. Arthur said it was pleasing to have had such success in the shortest format but it would be dangerous to assume the momentum would carry through to the ODIs.”It’s always good to be in a dressing room that’s winning – it’s a good place to be – but we’re not looking too much to that,” he said. “Friday is where we want to put our marker in the sand, and that’s why we’ve been building up hard this week. Friday, for us, is huge. We want to go one-nil up, and hopefully take momentum from that. So, yes, nice to win the Pro20s, but it’s a different beast.”
