Manchester City: Fans praise enormous Pep gesture as travelling fans get reward

According to the Daily Mail via Man City Superbia, manager Pep Guardiola has awarded every travelling fan to September’s away game to Shakhtar Donetsk a hospitality package for the return game.

The Sky Blues ran rampant in Ukraine that night, with goals from Riyad Mahrez, Ilkay Gundogan and Gabriel Jesus getting City off to a flying start in their Champions League group.

However, from the fans perspective, it was one arduous journey to make – with a credible travelling support of 114 flying all the way out to Ukraine on a Tuesday night to watch their team put on a dominant performance.

While some football fans may laugh at those numbers and perceive them as small, the logistics of the trip have to be taken into account – especially when you consider the politics – with the country currently at war with neighbours Russia.

Realising this, and making an enormous gesture, Guardiola personally sent free hospitality tickets to all the travelling fans for the return leg at the Etihad.

Here’s how the supporters reacted to a brilliant piece of news.

Manchester City: Fans bash Gabriel Jesus over squandered penalty

Manchester City scuppered a chance to qualify early for the Champions League knockout rounds following an eventful 1-1 draw at Atalanta, with supporters criticising Gabriel Jesus for an awful spot kick.

Manchester City were 1-0 up and cruising heading into the break after Jesus beautifully set up Raheem Sterling with a back heel, after some brilliant build-up play, to give City the lead.

However, when given the chance to gain a two-goal advantage following a handball, the Brazilian striker scuppered the opportunity with what Gary Lineker described as ‘one of the worst penalties you’ll ever see.’

From then on, things just got worse and worse for Pep Guardiola’s side – with Ederson going off injured at the break and Claudio Bravo stepping in only to be dismissed ten minutes from full-time after taking out Josip Ilicic.

The headlines were then immediately drawn when Kyle Walker had to step in goal for the last portion of the game, managing to shut out Atalanta, with City then going on to earn a draw.

As a result, City supporters have since bemoaned the missed penalty opportunity as a crucial point in the match where they could’ve been cruising – taking particular aim at Jesus.

Here’s what they had to say on Twitter.

West Ham fans want Nathan Holland in the first team

Nathan Holland scored twice as West Ham United’s Under-23 side recorded a 4-0 win over Stoke City Under-23s in the Premier League 2 on Monday night.

The 21-year-old featured in West Ham’s EFL Cup clash with Oxford United at the end of September but has not been involved in the Premier League this season.

His performance on Monday night made a huge impression on a number of the club’s fans, though, and some have even called for head coach Manuel Pellegrini to include the attacker against Sheffield United in the Premier League this weekend.

The Blades will head to the London Stadium full of confidence after a 1-0 win over Arsenal on Monday night, making it an even tougher test for the Hammers.

Holland has only made two first-team appearances for West Ham since arriving from Everton in the middle of the 2016/17 campaign.

However, many of the supporters want him to be involved in the senior squad going forward.

Everton’s failure to recruit means they can’t afford to drop out of form Michael Keane

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Everton’s Michael Keane endured yet another torrid game recently after he was held partially responsible for England’s defeat to Czech Republic over the international break, bearing the full brunt of the criticism from Three Lions fans.

The defender was dropped for Tyrone Mings in the following game because of Zdenek Ondrasek’s late goal, with Keane well out of position as the Czech man tapped home.

He has played every minute in the Premier League so far this season and has been a cause for concern throughout, conceding 13 league goals, which has left the Toffees in the drop zone.

However, despite his questionable form, manager Marco Silva can’t afford to drop the centre-back right now because of a lack of options around him. Should the Portuguese choose to keep him out, Mason Holgate would be the first point of call, but he remains fairly inexperienced at this level and given the club’s current form, it could be a risk to blood him now.

This season, Holgate has had just 17 minutes of Premier League action and in total, has made only 54 appearances for the Toffees at 22 years of age, 39 of which have came in the top-flight.

Keane’s errors against Czech Republic and Kosovo casts further doubt over his ability as Everton’s main central defender, and it only adds to issues Silva has made in the transfer market. The former Watford boss perhaps should have delved deeper into the market to find backups for the likes of Keane and not have focused so heavily on forward players like Moise Kean.

Silva has only signed one centre-back permanently since he joined from Watford in Mina, with right-back Djibril Sidibe the only defensive addition this summer.

Now, ahead of the fixture against West Ham United, Silva has to hope that the former Burnley man can shake off this poor form and help keep the goals out against a confident Hammers side.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side have scored 11 goals so far this season in the league and have lost just once in the competition since their opening weekend defeat to Manchester City.

Man Utd would be getting a perfect pressing forward in Thomas Muller

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

After getting rid of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez in the summer, Manchester United have left themselves incredibly short of options up front. Reports in recent weeks have claimed the Red Devils are keen on bringing in reinforcements in the upcoming January transfer window, with suggestions Mario Mandzukic and Callum Wilson are high up on the shortlist.

How much money could you make busking for a week as a freestyle footballer? Find out in the video below…

The latest man linked with a move to Old Trafford? Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller. The former Germany international who appears to have a long-running arrangement with the Red Devils to have his name consistently linked with a transfer. A deal has failed to materialise before, but with United’s current goal-scoring struggles – they have scored just ten times in the league this season – an approach for the 30-year-old makes all the sense in the world.

On the chalkboard

As Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to implement a fast-paced approach, with an intent on pressing the ball, Muller would be the perfect embodiment of the Norwegian’s vision. The versatile attacker is a work-horse, and has an engine to rival anyone in the world.

His former manager at international level, Jurgen Klinsmann, paid a glowing tribute to the German’s work ethic. He said: “There’s isn’t a team in the world that wouldn’t like to have Thomas Muller on its side. He is mentally strong, a very smart player who always seems able to find space, but physically he is in great shape as well. He is the one who runs the most kilometres but he makes it look easy, even the heat doesn’t seem to affect him.”

His current boss at Bayern, Niko Kovac, even described him as “intangible” and that “he helps everywhere, which makes him so valuable”. And that’s exactly the kind of player Solskjaer would undoubtedly appreciate. Working hard for the team, committed to the cause, and never one to let the team down. After all the drama surrounding Lukaku and Sanchez, Muller would be a welcome breath of fresh air.

He would hustle and harry the opposition defence, and his movement is unparalleled. Joachim Low remarked that the 6 foot 1 man is a “very unorthodox player” and that his unpredictable lines of running made him a particularly dangerous striker. Solskjaer has made it publicly known he wants both Rashford and Martial to score more scrappy goals like he did. Muller does exactly that.

So despite being in his thirties, Muller’s actual style of play makes him the ultimate fit for Solskjaer’s side.

Leeds defender Ben White hailed despite dropped points

[ad_pod ]

Leeds suffered a disappointing draw against Derby at the weekend as they conceded just their fourth league goal of the campaign.

The Whites spent the majority of the game with the ball at their feet, registering over 60% of the possession.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men rarely had any defending to do until the final 15 minutes when three of Derby’s five shots were taken.

Ben White was again in the defence but despite dropped points, Leeds supporters still found a reason to rave over the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month for August.

One fan determined that he would play for England in the future while another suggested he would be at Manchester City in the next two years.

A further individual went as far as saying he was the best defender they’ve seen at Elland Road since a certain Rio Ferdinand. White was also hailed as top class.

The 21-year-old signed on loan from Brighton during the transfer window and has won 2.9 aerial duels per game this term. He’s also been hugely successful with the ball at his feet, completing 88.2% of his passes.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Rangers fans discuss transfer links to Juventus legend Claudio Marchisio

[ad_pod ]

Some Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to discuss the news that Italy international Claudio Marchisio is of interest to the club as a potential transfer target.

RMC Sport report that Marchisio, who made 389 appearances for Juventus across a 13-year stay in Turin, is of interest to Steven Gerrard, although the Scottish giants face competition from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco.

33-year-old Marchisio most recently played for Russian Premier League side Zenit, although he is now a free agent – the 55-cap Italy international is arguably the most high profile player available for free out there right now.

It would represent a major coup from Rangers if they somehow managed to pull this transfer off.

One fan said that it would even be ‘the biggest coup in Scottish football’, whilst another thinks that Marchisio would be a fine signing purely based on the fact he netted against arch-rivals Celtic in the Champions League.

Let’s take a look at what else the Rangers fans on Twitter have been saying…

Charlton fans aren’t happy with Jonathan Leko after losing to Wigan

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Charlton fans have taken to Twitter to moan about Jonathan Leko, after the south Londoners suffered a second consecutive defeat with a loss against Wigan.

The 20-year-old – who is on a season-long loan from fellow Championship side West Brom – was making his seventh start of the campaign – the youngster has a goal and two assists to his name so far this term.

But he turned in a below-par performance against the Latics.

Leko – who has six career goals in 105 appearances –  was starting in attack alongside Tomer Hemed but did very little to threaten Wigan’s goal.

He failed to have a single shot and was also dispossessed once while having one unsuccessful touch.

Lee Bowyer’s side as a whole are seemingly struggling without Lyle Taylor, but Leko in particular was extremely quiet without the Montserrat international alongside him.

Let’s take a look at what a lot of unhappy Charlton fans have been saying about Leko…

Newcastle should steer well clear of "inconsistent" Francois Kamano

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Newcastle have the chance to sign Francois Kamano, according to reports in France, but he looks an awful lot like another young winger who recently flopped on Tyneside.

What’s the story?

According to L’Equipe, via GFFN, “a path is open” for Kamano to move from Bordeaux to Newcastle.

The report claims the Ligue 1 outfit want to sell as quickly as possible, and that he is available for just €15m (£13.9m).

French side AS Monaco and Italian outfit Genoa are also interested.

[ad_pod ]

Kenedy 2.0?

Kamano clearly has talent – the 23 year-old scored ten times in Ligue 1 last term, after finding the net eight and six times in the two previous seasons respectively.

Clearly then, he is improving, and his excellent mixture of speed and dribbling, along with his ability to play on both flanks, could make him a good option to have on the bench behind Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin.

However, Whoscored list his defensive contribution as “weak”, while he also grabbed just two league goals after the turn of the year last season. BT Sport Ligue 1 commentator David Crossan says the “inconsistent” Guinean lost his way in the second half of the campaign.

So, a speedy young winger with good natural ability, consistency issues and a poor defensive work rate – starting to sound like anyone familiar?

After 18 months on loan on Tyneside, Kenedy looks to be heading to Reading for the season. The winger was inconsistent, struggled to match his end product to his ability, and didn’t track back nearly enough.

With Saint-Maximin and Almiron surely the intended starters on the flanks and Mike Ashley notorious for not spending massive amounts in the transfer market, signing another Kenedy for £13.9m is surely the last thing the Magpies need to do on transfer deadline day.
