Big Sam’s blinding West Brom call vs Saints

West Brom recorded back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time this season on Monday evening and it largely was thanks to a blinding call from Sam Allardyce.

The 66-year-old was left with plenty to ponder following his side’s emphatic 5-2 win over Chelsea last weekend. Callum Robinson fired a huge message to the Baggies boss by bagging a brace from the bench at Stamford Bridge, whilst Blues loanee Conor Gallagher was available for selection again having not been able to face his parent club.

However, Allardyce tweaked his backline, reverting to a back four rather than the five which largely kept the Blues at bay. The decision saw Semi Ajayi ruthlessly axed but it certainly paid dividends.

On the Chalkboard

After such an impressive display at Stamford Bridge, you could forgive Big Sam if he stuck with the same lineup, but Robinson had to fit in somewhere and unfortunately for the 27-year-old Ajayi, it was he who made way. Instead, Albion’s commander opted for a central defensive partnership of Kyle Bartley and Dara O’Shea.

Southampton dominated possession (61%) and had had a whopping 14 attempts at goal throughout the 90 minutes, but that pairing stood firm to thwart the threat on offer from the likes of prolific goalscorer Danny Ings and wily veteran Theo Walcott. The Baggies centre-back duo lost just two of 17 duels between them and also combined for ten clearances, as per SofaScore.

Given the lack of height on offer from the opposition, it’s no wonder the 6 foot 4 colossus was axed, but  had the final result gone the other way, Allardyce would’ve undoubtedly come under fire as Ajayi is a hugely popular fan favourite at The Hawthorns.

Many times throughout their promotion-winning campaign last term, the Baggies faithful were quick to laud the Nigerian as an absolute “bargain” and emphasised how he must play every game, as seen in this piece from Football LeagueWorld.

He went on to make the Sky Sports EFL podcast’s Team of the Year, where Keith Andrews said of the 27-year-old: “When you look at Ajayi and what he’s achieved; how quickly he’s settled into the team, he’s become a leader and a massive player for them. He’s been a revelation, the way he’s taken to a team striving for promotion and the partnership he’s built up with Karl Bartley has been very impressive.”

More recently, Ajayi had been a rock for Big Sam, helping keep Manchester United to just one goal whilst he has found the net twice in big occasions. He bagged that all-important equaliser at Anfield and also scored in the West Midlands derby win over Wolves.

“Watched Ajayi a few times and he’s getting better all the time,” gushed West Ham legend Trevor Sinclair in January. “[He] steps in really well and threat in opposition box. Talent.”

To risk dropping the £9m-rated beast was certainly a massive call to make from Allardyce, but on the evidence witnessed on Monday evening, it proved to be a masterstroke decision from the West Brom manager.

Ajayi could well fit it hard to get back into the starting XI after Bartley and O’Shea’s domination against the Saints.

Fulton was superb in Swans win vs Sheff Wed

Swansea City gave their slim automatic promotion hopes a boost as they defeated relegation-threatened Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Goals from Jamal Lowe and Jay Fulton secured an important win for Steve Cooper’s side, who made it back-to-back wins on the road with the three points in Yorkshire.

Whilst there were plenty of excellent performances from the Swansea players who featured at Hillsborough, none were more impressive than Fulton in midfield, who was having a superb game even before he made the game safe with his second-half goal.

As per SofaScore, the Scottish midfielder would earn a 7.8/10 match rating for his display, which was comfortably the best of any player who featured in the game.

The 27-year-old completed 26/35 of his passes, resulting in a sold 74% pass accuracy, which is a step up on the 71.8% pass accuracy he has averaged in the Championship so far this season.

Fulton would also contribute an impressive four tackles during the game, as he regularly won the ball back for his side, which again is a significant improvement on the 2.6 tackles per game he has averaged in the second tier this season.

This was also the most tackles made by any player on the pitch, which emphasises that the Swansea midfielder was a level above at times on Tuesday.

The former Falkirk man would also win 6/8 of his duels during the game, resulting in an impressive 75% success rate, which suggests that he had the better of the Sheffield Wednesday midfielders during the game, as they all registered worse success rates.

Cooper was full of praise for Fulton earlier in the season, saying:

“Jay Fulton was excellent and showed what a quality player he is. He is a brilliant professional and teammate.”

This was clear to see on Tuesday night and after some impressive performances of late, it seems as if the Scottish midfielder will be an important player for the Swans as we reach the critical point of the season. And, in other news… Swansea could sign their ideal Guehi heir in 24 y/o beast, he won’t cost a penny

Celtic: 7 transfers Roy Keane could make

The hunt for Celtic’s new manager seems to be taking a fresh twist every single day. Will Dermot Desmond ever find Neil Lennon’s successor? Time will tell.

One of the names so hotly tipped with moving to Parkhead is Roy Keane. The Irishman has reportedly been in discussions with the Hoops hierarchy over replacing Lennon in recent days.

It’s news that has gone down like a led balloon with the Celtic supporters, according to podcaster Paul John Dykes.

That being said, his wealth of experience and contacts in the football world could be game-changing for the Bhoys in the transfer window.

Here are seven players that could arrive if Keane walks through the door in the coming months…

Divock Origi

This is probably the most farfetched name on the list but there is every possibility that the Belgian forward could arrive at Celtic in the summer. Reports state that Origi could move in the opposite direction as part of a move that sees Odsonne Edouard head to Liverpool.

Origi has scored just once this term but has a habit of scoring big goals; netting against Barcelona in the 2018/19 Champions League and then scoring in the final too. He’d be a valuable replacement if Edouard does leave.

Siriki Dembele

Brother of Karamoko, the Peterborough winger could sign on a free transfer when the window opens. He is out of contract in the summer and has been linked with a move to the Hoops in previous weeks.

We’ve already tipped Dembele to replace the enigmatic Ryan Christie in the starting XI. He has severely underperformed this season, scoring just five times compared to the 20 he racked up last term. As a result, Celtic should be in the hunt for a new winger.

Declan Gallagher

Defensive recruits should be at the height of Keane’s agenda if he walks through the door this summer. Celtic have shipped 14 more goals than Rangers in the league and individual errors have been plentiful. Gallagher, who has been tipped with a move to the Hoops, could fix their problems.

The Motherwell centre-back has won 3.9 aerial duels per game this season, a tally that usurps Kristoffer Ajer and Stephen Welsh.

Allan Campbell

Another star of the Motherwell team, Campbell has been touted as the heir to Scott Brown’s throne. The Hoops skipper will leave at the end of the season and will depart Parkhead with an enormous legacy. His departure will leave an open hole in the midfield, however, one Campbell can exploit.

He has won two tackles per match this season, a tally that betters Brown and Ismaila Soro.

Milan van Ewijk

Another area that should be of utmost importance to Keane is at right-back. Jeremie Frimpong left for Germany in January and Jonjoe Kenny is only on loan. Thus, Van Ewijk would be an important signing.

The Dutch full-back has been linked with Celtic in recent months and is an expert in the tackle, winning a whopping 3.3 per game in the Eredivisie this season. That’s considerably more than anyone in the Hoops team.

Romain Perraud

The French left-back has caught the eye of Celtic for the best part of two years now. Could Keane be the man to finally lure him to Glasgow? Quite possibly. With Diego Laxalt heading back to Milan at the conclusion of his loan spell, Celtic will be a little light on the left.

Perraud nearly joined the Bhoys in 2019 but has been the subject of interest again in recent months. FFC has already tipped him to be a like-for-like Kieran Tierney successor.

David Marshall

Another high priority for Keane or any new manager should be in goal. Vasilis Barkas, Scott Bain and Conor Hazard have all been guilty of individual mistakes this term that have cost the team.

Barkas has been glaringly poor considering his £4.5m fee and if Keane arrives, the Irishman should replace him with Marshall.

He has recently been tipped to head back to Celtic and would be a valuable addition. After all, he already knows the surroundings having spent five years with the club between 2002 and 2007.

AND in other news, Bye-bye Edouard: Celtic must swoop for 28-goal “sensation” who’ll “go to the very top”…

WBA fans slam Phillips vs Palace

West Bromwich Albion fans were far from happy with the performance of Matt Phillips during their clash with Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Baggies dropped yet more points to the Eagles in what was another blow to the Midlands outfit’s chances of survival, after Luka Milivojevic scored the opening goal of the game from the penalty spot. West Brom will now likely need at least three wins from their remaining nine matches to even have a chance of reaching safety (Sky Sports) – they are running out of opportunities to pick up points.

On the right side of the midfield, Phillips was particularly disappointing. He prevailed in just four of his ten duels (SofaScore) and was generally far too wasteful throughout the game. Sam Allardyce will have a decision to make in regards to keeping him in the side between now and the rest of the term.

The fans were livid at his showing, and they took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about Phillips below

Celtic: Mechelen in talks over Shved deal

KV Mechelen are in talks with Celtic over a summer deal for winger Marian Shved.

That’s according to a report in the Daily Record [print edition 20/3/21, p.60], cited by 67 Hail Hail.

The 23-year-old has impressed on loan with the Belgian side, especially since the turn of the New Year, making 16 appearances in all competitions, scoring four times and registering three assists.

Shved, who is on the same wages as David Turnbull (£7,500 per week), is under contract with the Hoops until 2023.

He has only made three appearances for the club since his £1.8m move to Glasgow in 2019, and it seems as if he could be leaving Parkhead for good over the coming months.

Transfer Tavern take

Shved may not be the only Celtic player to complete a permanent move to Belgium this summer. Hoops defender Jack Hendry has also starred in the Jupiler Pro League with Oostende, who appear to be keen on activating an option-to-buy clause at the end of the current campaign.

It seems as if there will be a major Parkhead rebuild both on and off the pitch over the coming months, and moving on the likes of Shved and Hendry could be just the beginning.

Predicted Man City team vs West Ham

Manchester City will be looking to continue their exceptional winning run when they take on high-flying West Ham in the Premier League in Saturday’s early kick-off.

Pep Guardiola’s side have now won 19 games in a row in all competitions and are comfortable at the top of the Premier League, but will have to be at their best if they want to take three points against David Moyes’ side, who sit fourth after their own strong run of form.

Guardiola made several changes to his side for the trip to Budapest to face Borussia Monchengladbach in midweek and more rotation seems likely, especially with another home game against Wolves to come on Tuesday.

Here’s how Football FanCast expects the Spanish manager to line his side up against the Hammers, with three changes from the starting team that secured a 2-0 win in the Champions League on Wednesday…

Ederson looks set to win the golden glove this season should City’s impressive defensive record continue, so he is likely to continue in goal.

There’s one change in defence, as John Stones comes back in Aymeric Laporte, having been rested against Monchengladbach in midweek, whilst Joao Cancelo and Kyle Walker continue at full-back having excelled there against Marco Rose’s side.

Rodri and Ilkay Gundogan are likely to start in midfield, but they will support Kevin De Bruyne, with the Belgian left on the bench against Monchengladbach as he has only just returned from injury.

He comes in for Bernardo Silva, with Riyad Mahrez starting on the right-wing ahead of the Portuguese international.

Finally, Raheem Sterling moves up front ahead of Gabriel Jesus, who is dropped to the bench despite scoring in midweek, as Guardiola suggested that his side should have scored more in Hungary, with the Brazilian perhaps the guilty party after failing to shoot when through on goal.

Isso vai prejudicar o clube financeiramente, o time…

Joel Matip has run out of chances at Liverpool

Joel Matip was once again absent for Liverpool on Wednesday night, as he was unable to recover from the injury problem that forced him off in the Reds’ 1-1 draw with Fulham last weekend.

Fortunately for Jurgen Klopp’s side, Roberto Firmino’s late header meant that they would return to the top of the table after beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Anfield, but the German manager will be concerned that the Cameroonian is struggling with injury problems at a time where they are desperately short of defensive options.

Rhys Williams filled in superbly for the Reds on what was his Premier League debut, helping keep Harry Kane quiet throughout the 90 minutes, whilst Fabinho was once again excellent in his new-found role as a centre-back.

Therefore, when you also consider the solid performances of Nathaniel Phillips when he has been called upon at times this season, you wonder whether Matip, who earns £100k per week with the Reds, may have now run out of chances with Liverpool.

The former Schalke man has been excellent in spells for Liverpool, and of course played his part in the Reds winning the Champions League in 2019, as well as the Premier League in 2020.

However, the 29-year-old has regularly been sidelined with injury during his time with the Merseyside club and this latest setback will be a huge cause of frustration for Klopp in a time when he was relying on the centre-back to stay fit, due to the long-term injuries suffered by Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk.

Therefore, once those two return to fitness, it may well be time for Klopp to axe Matip, as unfortunately, he has shown himself to be unreliable throughout his time at the club, and the talents coming through the Liverpool academy look ready to step up in his absence.

Hopefully, for the Reds, his current injury won’t rule him out for too much longer, as he will surely be an important player for the rest of this season, but beyond that, you worry for his future with the club.
