World Cup knock-out round FAQs

A summary of how the 2015 World Cup quarterfinal venues have been allocated

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Jan-20152:06

Australia, NZ to play knock-out matches at home

Venues and dates for the four quarterfinal matches:
March 18 – SCG, Sydney
March 19 – MCG, Melbourne
March 20 – Adelaide Oval, Adelaide
March 21 – Westpac Stadium, Wellington
Criteria for allocation of quarterfinal venues among Pool A teams:
Preference for the two host teams, followed by seedings based on ICC team rankings. Hence, if Australia and New Zealand make it to the top four of Pool A, they will play their quarterfinal matches in Adelaide and Wellington respectively. What about the other two qualifiers from Pool A?
The venue allocation for the quarterfinals for the two teams other than the hosts is based on the ICC ODI rankings. In case Sri Lanka, ranked fourth, and England, ranked fifth, qualify, then they will play their quarter-finals in Sydney and Melbourne respectively. What happens if one of the top-four seeded teams do not qualify?
In the instance that one of those teams do not make it to the top four, the team that takes its place on the points table will play at the respective venue. For example, if Scotland qualify in place of England, then Scotland’s quarterfinal match will be played at the MCG. Similarly, if Bangladesh qualify in place of New Zealand, the former’s quarterfinal match will be in Wellington. What happens if a host team and a seeded team do not qualify?
If a host team and a seeded team do not finish in the top four, the venues will depend on the points tally of the two teams that qualify in their place and the schedule of the quarterfinals. The team with more points among the two unseeded qualifiers will play the quarterfinal that is scheduled first.Consider a scenario where New Zealand [a host team] and Sri Lanka [a seeded team] do not finish in the top four, and the Pool A table features Bangladesh and Afghanistan in third and fourth place respectively. As Bangladesh have more points than Afghanistan, they will play in Sydney on March 18, which is scheduled to be the first of the four quarterfinals, and Afghanistan will play in Wellington on March 21.What happens to qualifying teams from Pool B?
Their quarterfinal venues will depend on the eventual points tally in Pool B and the points tally of teams in Pool A. The quarterfinal line-up is: A1 v B4, A2 v B3, A3 v B2, A4 v B1. So if South Africa top Pool B [B1] and Sri Lanka finish fourth among the qualifiers from Pool A [A4], then South Africa will play Sri Lanka in Sydney. Similarly, if Australia finish third in Pool A [A3] and India finish second in Pool B [B2], the quarterfinal between the two teams will be played in Adelaide.

ICC clears Al-Amin's action

Al-Amin Hossain, the Bangladesh quick bowler, has been cleared to continue bowling in international cricket by the ICC after an independent test in Chennai found his action to be legal

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Nov-2014Al-Amin Hossain, the Bangladesh quick bowler, has been cleared to continue bowling in international cricket by the ICC after an independent test in Chennai found his action to be legal. Al-Amin had been reported for a suspect action during the first Test against West Indies in St Vincent in September.A comprehensive analysis of his action, conducted at the newly accredited Sri Ramachandra University on October 20, revealed that the amount of elbow extension for all his deliveries was within the 15-degree level of tolerance permitted under the ICC regulations.Al-Amin was the second Bangladesh bowler to be reported for a suspect action during the tour, after team-mate, offspinner Sohag Gazi, who was later suspended in October. Al-Amin played two Tests in the West Indies and was also in the playing eleven for the first Test against Zimbabwe last month.

Cullinan: A brave decision from Kallis

Graeme Smith, the former South Africa captain, has said that Jacques Kallis retired from international cricket because he realised he might no longer have the mental strength to last till the 2015 World Cup, and that he could not face the possibility of letting his team down.Kallis had quit Tests late last year and decided to call time on his limited-overs career after making 0, 1 and 4 in Sri Lanka earlier this month.”I’ve been calling him an ‘old man’ and asking him what he’s doing out there, but I had a hint that he might decide to retire after he came back from Sri Lanka and realised that it would take a lot of hard work for him to get through to the World Cup,” Smith told . “When you’re playing full-time it’s easier, but focus is very crucial at international level and I think he was wondering if his mind is really on it.”He really wanted to win the World Cup, but I’ve always appreciated his honesty and I think he realised that he might let the team down. He was honest enough to realise he might not be strong enough to make it through to next year, especially in terms of bowling and mentally.”After Kallis’ return to the ODI side last year, the challenge for South Africa had been to build the side around him but Smith said the timing of his exit six months before the World Cup had given the team time to make up for his absence.”He’s given the team enough space tactically to fill his gap with other guys but it’s obviously always sad when players of his calibre move on. But he’s had an incredible career which we can all celebrate and look back on fondly. He brought so much happiness and South African cricket got a lot out of Jacques in so many different eras.”Smith said that Kallis was among the greatest to have played the game. “It’s always difficult to compare players from different eras, but if you consider the amount of cricket Jacques played, the length of consistency at the top of the game and all the different conditions and challenges he performed in, then he’s got to be up there with the best who’ve ever played the game. In time, I’m sure his reputation will only go from strength to strength.”Hashim Amla, the South Africa Test captain, also praised Kallis, calling him a “one-in-50-years” cricketer. “Jacques was a one-in-50-years cricketer who had a huge influence on so many Proteas players over a twenty-year period. I was privileged to have been one of those. You appreciate the magnitude of the cricketer not only when you look at his record but also when you play alongside him.”

‘Precisávamos mesmo de um novo zagueiro, contratamos o David Braz e o Rodriguez estreou. Vamos em frente. Se alguém sair, vamos ver. Vamos aguardar’, completou.

Tamil Nadu spinners wreak havoc on Baroda

ScorecardRahil Shah made full use of a pitch that offered turn and bounce, picking up four wickets•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Tamil Nadu’s spinners enjoyed a highly productive day, as Baroda slipped, stumbled and were finally bowled out for 162 in Chennai. Left-arm spinner Rahil Shah earned his first Ranji cap since last December and benefited on a pitch that offered turn and bounce right from the first session, as he went on to finish with a career-best 4 for 49.Overcast skies greeted both teams in the morning and there were only brief spells of sunshine throughout the day, but Baroda, who had won the toss, survived the first half hour without much trouble. However, the period of consolidation that they were building towards never came to fruition.L Balaji, the Tamil Nadu captain, opted for spin as early as the 11th over after which Baroda’s scoring was kept on a tight leash, subsequently leading to a steady bleed of wickets. Dhiren Mistry, also making his first appearance in a year, made a decent account of himself, top-scoring with 68 – his maiden first-class half-century. He did benefit from a spill at midwicket while on 34 and a straight-forward catch put down behind the stumps on 55, but was the only top-order batsman who looked in any kind of control against the incessant stump-to-stump lines of the Tamil Nadu spinners.”It was a difficult pitch to bat on. Some balls turned and others straightened and it was slow as well,” Mistry said. “I knew I had to play my shots but the ball was not coming onto the bat and I had to wait for the loose ball.”. There were very few of those, though.S Badrinath had not recovered from a mild fever which had sidelined him from practice, and the home side chose to invest in the extra spinner, which reaped dividends. Shah’s impact was so effective that his figures read: 9-6-4-1, including a spell where he bowled 31 balls without conceding a single run in the morning session. His first over showed signs of this being a result-oriented pitch, as the ball gripped and turned well past the outside edge. Tamil Nadu were quick to tighten the screws, operating with a slip and silly point for large durations of play as the ball even garnered enough venom and at one point, even tipped the wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik’s helmet off his head. Offspinner Malolan Rangarajan, who sat out the last match, and left-arm spinner Aushik Srinivas lent good support with three wickets each.Yusuf Pathan came in at the fall of the fourth wicket with Baroda still short of hundred, and he immediately provided a different narrative. His stay, although brief, was populated by strong drives down the ground, and a conscious use of the sweep. Once the bowler pitched it short, the Baroda captain was both quick and deft with his late cuts. He enjoyed a reprieve as well, when the umpire failed to spot a clear edge to Karthik. Tamil Nadu had dropped 12 catches in their last four games and Karthik continued their sloppiness on the field. In addition to grassing Mistry, he fumbled a relatively simple stumping, and could not get his gloves behind two other chances, albeit difficult ones.Yusuf was threatening to revive the flagging innings, but Rangarajan’s steadfast accuracy, helped by another umpiring error – this time he failed to spot an inside edge onto the pad – cemented Tamil Nadu’s dominance when Yusuf was ruled leg before -one of four wickets that fell between lunch and tea.Yusuf adjusted from a sweep shot to present a forward defensive on one knee, but even though the ball had hit the bat before the pad, he was given out. Baroda had slumped to 133 for 6 and with their last established batsman in the shed, their tail succumbed without much fight.Tamil Nadu’s openers, Abhinav Mukund and Arun Karthik, survived two overs of play before bad light intervened. The pitch is expected to deteriorate in the coming days, and if that happens, Baroda’s spinners could very well return the favour in kind to the hosts when play resumes tomorrow.

Tendulkar farewell not a distraction – Richardson

West Indies team manager, Richie Richardson, has said that Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell celebrations will not overshadow their preparations for the two-Test series

Nagraj Gollapudi in Kolkata04-Nov-2013West Indies team manager, Richie Richardson, has said that Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell celebrations will not overshadow their preparations for the two-Test series against India starting at Eden Gardens on Wednesday.According to Richardson, Tendulkar himself would make sure that all the attention would return to the game as soon as he walked in to face the first ball, and that West Indies would not be embarrassed to spoil his swansong.”We are going to be playing hard. When we here last time, whenever Sachin came we bowled hard and fielded hard,” Richardson told media at the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) office. A scheduled press conference by West Indies could not take place because the local police had locked themselves in the pressroom to have their own meeting. Richardson, who was meeting an Indian acquaintance with whom he had played at a local club in England, had to cut short the chat and address an impromptu briefing.West Indies last won a series in India under Clive Lloyd’s leadership 30 years ago. In 2011 under Sammy’s captaincy, West Indies, despite losing the series 2-0, had shown a lot of character and were successful in denying Tendulkar his 100th century in the third Test in Mumbai.According to Richardson, West Indies had the manpower and experience, but would have to work really hard to get the better of India. “India are going to play hard despite all the big thing about Sachin. The guys are very confident and are playing good cricket. They have their pride to maintain as well. So we don’t expect India to come at us easy. We are going to have to work really hard. At the same time, we believe we can be competitive against India as we showed last time. We had a couple of bad sessions. It is a now a different series. So we are looking forward to a good challenge.”This is the second time in a week Richardson has promised that West Indies would play at high intensity, after he said the visitors would not give an inch to Tendulkar, during the warm-up match against Uttar Pradesh last week.Still, it is hard not to feel overwhelmed by Tendulkar’s farewell because it is everywhere. Cutouts of Tendulkar lifting the World Cup and playing a drive, a wax carving of him in a celebratory pose, pictures of him along with his family and local hero Sourav Ganguly adorn the porch of the CAB office. A popular soundtrack based on Tendulkar by a local singer was being played from the early morning. On Monday, as photographers and TV reporters waited for hours to get Tendulkar to stand besides the wax replica, Darren Sammy and his team slipped in quietly through an adjacent door. Barely a few people noticed the visitors as all the attention was focused squarely on Tendulkar. Later, Chris Gayle wrapped up his batting drills quickly before leaving a training session to play the role of ambassador for a global watch brand. No one bothered. Tendulkar remained the centrepiece.

'Lele was always ready to help in whatever way he could'

Members of the Indian cricket fraternity pay tribute to former BCCI secretary Jaywant Lele, who died of a heart attack on September 19

Kiran More, who hops between Vadodara and Mumbai, used to make it a point to visit former Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) and BCCI secretary Jaywant Lele at his residence whenever he was in his hometown. Thursday afternoon was no exception. After having celebrated Lele’s 75th birthday on Sunday – two days after Lele actually turned 75 – More, the former India wicketkeeper and chairman of selectors, dropped in for his customary chat with the veteran administrator. “We had a nice half-an-hour-long chat, discussing the book that we had been planning, on the occasion of his 75th birthday. Even though he was feeling slightly dizzy, he told me he was feeling good and also passed a message to the doctor, through me, not to visit him,” More said. “And he had to join his friends for a customary cards session in the late afternoon, [so] I left after seeking [his] blessings.”More still cannot believe that it turned out to be their last meeting. “I received a call around 8.30pm from his family saying he had suffered a heart attack and when I reached his home, only then did I realise that he hadn’t made it,” More said. “It’s a sad day for Indian cricket, particularly Baroda cricket.”More, who first met Lele “as a 14-year-old kid at the BCA nets” was one of the many cricketers who had a fondness for the outspoken administrator. While Lele was portrayed in a negative manner in the media for his brusqueness, the cricket fraternity loved him for that.”I always came across him as someone who was always ready to help in whatever way he could. What was striking about him was that he was ready to be confronted,” India bowler Irfan Pathan, who hails from Baroda, said after attending Lele’s last rites on Friday afternoon. “Besides his passion for the game, people will always remember him for his openness – both in private and while dealing with the media. But what the cricket fraternity will remember him for is the immense work he did for the BCCI and especially for Baroda cricket.”Not many remember that Lele was a first-class umpire before taking over the reins of the BCA and then proving his administrative skills at the BCCI during Indian cricket’s transitional phase from a semi-professional to professional era. And despite his shrewdness as an administrator, he never let the passionate fan in him die; as this reporter realised during a breakfast meeting with him at his residence during a Ranji Trophy match in 2010-11, cricket was the focal point in his life.It made him naturally caring towards cricketers, a rarity in an Indian sports administrator of the past. “I remember the first time I met him was when I was selected for India for the Under-15 Asia Cup in Malaysia,” Irfan said. “When my selection was announced I didn’t have a passport and, at that time, there was no passport office in Baroda.”We had to travel all the way to Ahmedabad and the officials over there wanted to be pleased, so every day they used to ask for additional documents. After travelling to Ahmedabad and coming back for three days in succession, finally, on the fourth day, my coach took me to Mr Lele. That was the first time I was meeting him and in no time he gave me a letter of recommendation on the BCCI letterhead and my passport was delivered within two days. After that and I could go to Malaysia represent the country for the first time. This may appear as a routine gesture now but in those days, not many used to take efforts to help out younger cricketers.”More also recalled Lele’s caring attitude: “Every time I was selected for the Indian team, he would be more excited than me. He would ensure that all my travel plans were perfectly in place. And then I realised that I wasn’t the only one. He would take care of all the boys – irrespective of the state or zone they belonged to – in the same manner.”When you control a state organisation for three decades, one tends to develop professional rivals. But Lele was one of those who made more friends than foes, not just at a professional level. “Jayant was a great soul and he was a gentleman of the first degree,” Jagmohan Dalmiya, the former BCCI and ICC president who worked closely with Lele, said in a choked voice. “He was outspoken and he never minced words. He was a very close friend of mine and it’s a personal and sad loss to me.”Dalmiya’s wasn’t the only choked voice in the Indian cricket fraternity on Friday.

Both sides require an outright result, the Bushrangers to host the final and the Tigers to have a chance of reaching it.
