Arsenal: The players are right, Unai Emery’s squad selections are confusing

Arsenal fans were baffled, neutrals were baffled, and even the Arsenal players were baffled by Unai Emery’s squad selection.

It’s rare you hear rumblings out of a club that the players are confused by their manager’s squad choice for an important game, and if any Premier League club was to have such a story break it would be from Arsenal, and that’s exactly what’s happened.

According to the Telegraph, Arsenal players were left confused about Emery’s first-team selection for their home game against Crystal Palace that saw Mohamed Elneny partner Matteo Guendouzi in midfield with Carl Jenkinson as right-wingback.

As well as odd picks, the report also claims Arsenal players are confused with the Spaniard’s continued faith in defender Shkodran Mustafi, who has been a mainstay in the Gunners XI despite calamitous performances for the majority of his career in north London.

With Arsenal losing the last three games in the league and looking likely to miss out on Champions League football barring a Europa League triumph, the revolting players have a point about Emery’s questionable squad choices.

The Palace game should have been an easy win for Arsenal, but because of Emery’s weird experiential team, the Gunners fell to the Eagles 3-2 and squandered a golden chance to take hold of a top-four spot.

Arsenal have played themselves into a hole that will be hard to get out of, and although the players lack of a professional attitude plays as big a part as Emery’s tactics, the Spaniard’s squad selections have cost the Gunners points in the league, and it is up to him to take responsibility and own up to his mistakes and rectify them.

Arsenal fans, what would your ideal Gunners XI be? Let us know!

Get him on the bench: Newcastle fans react to Elias Sorensen news

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle United fans have been on social media reacting to the news that Elias Sorensen has been nominated for the Premier League 2 Player of the Season award.

And a number have called on head coach Rafael Benitez to hand the centre-forward some first-team minutes against Fulham in the Premier League this weekend.

Sorensen is yet to make his first-team bow for the Magpies, but has scored 20 times this season – including 12 in the Premier League 2.

The 19-year-old actually joined Blackpool on loan during the January transfer window, but made just one league appearance for the club before being recalled.

It will certainly be interesting to see what happens with the Denmark Under-21 international at the end of the season.

But there are some Newcastle fans thinking about the here and now, with a selection hoping to see Sorensen feature away to Fulham on Sunday afternoon in what is a pretty meaningless fixture.

A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

Joao Felix could be Spurs’ new Eriksen

Tottenham Hotspur fans will be pleased with how their side performed earlier on today as they managed to get the better of Huddersfield Town at the new White Hart Lane.

Spurs remain unbeaten at their new stadium and will be hoping that they can keep it that way from here on in until the end of the season, with a perfect finish to the season possibly resulting in a top four spot and silverware.

But, things aren’t all perfect for Spurs as a big worry at this moment in time is the future of Christian Eriksen, as his contract is set to run out next summer and according to Calcio Mercato (via HITC), Tottenham Hotspur could sell the Denmark international for €100 million (£86 million) this summer.

Of course, Spurs fans will want to see him stay in North London but that could change if Joao Felix was to rock up in the English capital in the summer. According to Football Insider, Spurs sent scouts to run the rule over the youngster during Benfica’s Europa League clash with Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.

Felix is arguably the hottest prospect in the whole of world football having produced an incredible 22 goals & assists in all competitions, with 15 goals and seven assists to his name.

The attacking midfielder put in an eye-catching performance in front of Spurs’ scouts on Thursday as he grabbed a hat-trick and set up a goal for his team-mate. If that isn’t enough to warrant a summer move then something clearly isn’t right as he was absolutely sensational, but the crazy thing is that he’s only 19-years-old.

And, Benfica’s sporting director Rui Costa even hailed the youngster as ‘extraordinary’ (as per Tuttosport, via Chris Burton of Goal), so it’s clear to see just how highly-rated he really is.

Sadly, Christian Eriksen is reportedly (as per Tuttosport, talkSPORT) attracting interest from Inter Milan with the Italian club’s director of football Piero Ausilio, kicking off preliminary talks to try and get Eriksen to the San Siro.

So, it’s important that Spurs start planning for the Dane’s potential exit with Real Madrid reportedly (as per reports from Spain, via The Mirror).

Daniel Levy could land Spurs’ Christian Eriksen heir with a move for the Portuguese playmaker as they’re very similar players, with both of them looking to create in the final third and they both possess the ability to find the back of the net from almost any angle.

The Dane joined Spurs as a 21-year-old and Felix is set to turn 20 this year, so he could start off in a very similar position in England if he makes the move. He could definitely fill the potential void left by Eriksen and he even has the potential to go one better than the 27-year-old, so Spurs must act quickly.

A natural: Man City fans heap praise on Phil Foden after first Premier League start

[ad_pod ]

Manchester City fans have taken to Twitter to heap praise on Phil Foden, after the attacking midfielder made his first Premier League start in the 2-0 win over Cardiff on Wednesday evening.

The teenage prospect had only previously featured for the Cityzens in the cup competitions from the first whistle, but he was handed his first league start by Pep Guardiola against the Bluebirds and he performed excellently.

442oons have charted the entire career of Man City’s main man Sergio Aguero through song in the hilarious video below…

Despite being just 18 years of age, Foden slotted in seamlessly in an attack littered with world-class talent, and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet after a number of chances went begging – he hit the post with a well-taken second half effort.

The City academy graduate had five shots on Neil Etheridge’s goal, and also made three key passes on a night where he took a big step in his development.

Let’s see what the City fans on Twitter have been saying about the teenager’s performance…

Leeds fans react to Izzy Brown’s latest exploits

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United’s under-23s secured a 3-0 win over Watford’s under-23s at Vicarage Road on Monday.

The goals for the Whites came courtesy of Izzy Brown, Pascal Struijk and Kun Hihaylov. Ultimately, it was a comfortable win for the Yorkshire youth outfit that saw them take firm control of top spot in the Professional Development League northern division.

Brown produced another fine performance against the Hornets. The 22-year-old Chelsea loanee took his goal very well, continuing his prolific form for the Elland Road club’s under-23s side.

Brown has also been on the fringes of Marcelo Bielsa’s first team squad in recent weeks. The forward made his debut for the Whites’ senior side as a substitute in the recent defeat to QPR. Brown has struggled to make an impression in the first team this season but he’ll be hoping that his form for the under-23s pushes him further into Bielsa’s thoughts.

After the under-23s’ win, plenty of Leeds fans took to Twitter to praise Brown’s contribution…

Newcastle fans fume as Mike Dean is confirmed for Bournemouth clash

[ad_pod ]

Mike Dean will take charge of Newcastle’s trip to Bournemouth this weekend, and Magpies fans are already preparing for the worst.

Newcastle travel to the south coast this weekend knowing three points could take them within a point of the top ten.

The Magpies have won five home games on the bounce, but their away form has been woeful, losing four of their last six away trips and drawing the other two.

Bournemouth meanwhile have not been in great form either, as the Cherries’ incredible start to the season has withered away, and they have taken just four points from their last six games.

Eddie Howe’s side now have a big advantage according to the Toon Army though, who are fuming at the club’s confirmation that Dean will take charge of the clash.

The enigmatic man in the middle, who is often criticised by fans for making himself the centre of attention, is on 99 Premier League red cards, so could we see the 100th this weekend?

Arsenal predicted XI to face Man City

Wednesday evening represents a massive occasion for Mikel Arteta, as it will be the first time that he has faced Manchester City as a manager.

The Spaniard worked alongside Pep Guardiola from 2016 right up until 2019, acting as his assistant manager, but left to take the main job at the Emirates.

Considering he will be coming up against the man who will have had an integral role in his development as a managerial figure, Arteta will likely be keen to prove himself.

Aside from personal pride, Arsenal are currently five points behind fifth-placed Manchester United, so the 37-year-old will feel that a result is needed to maintain any hopes of a high finish.

FFC has predicted the XI that Arteta may use in order to get a result against City, including two changes from the 1-0 win against West Ham United.

The backline remains largely the same as the one that kept a clean sheet against the Hammers, starting with Bernd Leno staying between the sticks.

Bukayo Saka, Pablo Mari and David Luiz also remain in their respective places in the Gunners’ defence, while Sokratis Papastathopoulos comes out of the team.

Ahead of the game, Arteta was quoted by Arsenal’s official website as saying: “I think [Cedric Soares and Shkodran Mustafi] will be available to play. Hopefully, everybody will be available to train tomorrow [Tuesday] and we’ll pick the squad with the best players we can.”

With Sokratis having been played out of position against the Hammers, Arteta may be tempted to put the Portuguese full-back into the side instead of him.

Dani Ceballos was lauded by fans for his performance on the weekend, so he keeps his place at the base of Arteta’s midfield alongside Granit Xhaka.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mesut Ozil and Nicolas Pepe also stay in the team, operating as the three behind the main striker.

Eddie Nketiah was slated by fans for his performance against West Ham and he comes out of the team for Alexandre Lacazette, after the Frenchman recorded two goals and an assist in his last two substitute appearances.

Meanwhile, Arsenal fans have been debating about their transfer target.

Leeds fans point finger of blame at Marcelo Bielsa for draw against Cardiff

Marcelo Bielsa has rarely put a foot wrong this season and all the good work he has done was evidenced on Saturday once again with his side 3-0 up against Cardiff, and coasting in the way they were playing.

Even a poor mistake by Kiko Casilla which gave the visitors a consolation goal on the hour didn’t seem to disrupt matters, until two goals in the last ten minutes turned the game on its head and raised questions about Bielsa’s decision making.

In particular, the decision to take off senior players such as Patrick Bamford and Gaetano Berardi backfired. Both were playing well and providing a key service to the defence in their own way, yet the Argentine felt it was okay to bring on two 20-year-old players.

Eddie Nketiah has often featured as a sub so that perhaps wasn’t too significant, but brining on Pascal Strujik for only his second senior appearance was a puzzling decision, and one which hasn’t been lost on fans – who blame Bielsa for the comeback disaster.

The perplexing decision undoubtedly cost the Whites all three points as some questionable positioning from Strujik allowed Robert Glatzel to pounce following a long ball from Lee Tomlin, and that was enough to share the spoils.

Bielsa must learn from this. As much as he wants to blood youngsters there is a time and a place, and after conceding one he should have focused on keeping his key players on the pitch, and seeing out the win.

He will now know just how much of a disruption simple substitutions can have, and the effect that taking off Bamford has on the team, from both an attacking and defensive perspective.

Nevertheless, he has rightly been criticised for his handling of the match, which has overshadowed the extension of Leeds’ unbeaten run, and just how well they played for the majority of the match.

Despite an ultimately disappointing result, the match against Cardiff did at least highlight the importance of one player, who has rightly been praised by fans as a result.
