Alvaro Morata suffers brutal injury blow as Como face long spell without ex-Real Madrid & Chelsea striker

Como have been dealt a massive injury blow with Alvaro Morata ruled out for a significant period. The Spanish striker, who arrived in the summer following a drawn-out transfer saga involving Galatasaray and AC Milan, faces a frustrating spell on the sidelines after sustaining a serious thigh injury against Inter.

Morata blow confirmed

Cesc Fabregas faces a major headache heading into the winter break after Como confirmed that their marquee summer signing has sustained a serious muscle injury. Morata limped off during the first half of the recent clash against Inter at San Siro, clutching his thigh after a challenge near the corner flag.

According to an official statement from the club, tests have confirmed a "high-grade lesion of the long adductor muscle in his left thigh". While the club stopped short of putting a definitive timeline on his return, reports in Italy suggest the Spaniard will be out for at least two months. He is expected to miss crucial fixtures as Como look to climb the table, with a potential return date pencilled in for mid-February 2026. They face two matches against AC Milan by then, one of which is supposed to be played in Australia, as well as Lazio and Atalanta.

Advertisement'Frustration weighs heavily' on Morata

Morata took to Instagram to express his devastation at the latest setback. "When things don't go as you expect, when you give your best but can't reach where you want to go, frustration weighs heavily," he wrote. "And now, on top of that, this injury. But even in moments like this, I feel fortunate: because of my teammates, because of my club, because of the incredible fans. I will recover, I will get up and I will return to help achieve all our objectives."

A nightmare start after summer saga

The injury compounds what has been a nightmare start to life at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia for the 33-year-old. Brought in to provide elite experience and goals, Morata has struggled to find his rhythm, failing to find the net in his first 15 competitive appearances for the club, eight of which have been as a member of the starting XI.

His arrival was meant to be a coup for the ambitious outfit. The transfer saga was one of the stories of the summer, with Morata initially on loan at Galatasaray from AC Milan. A complicated three-way negotiation ensued, with the Turkish giants demanding compensation to terminate his loan early. Milan eventually agreed to pay a fee to release him, allowing him to join Fabregas – his former Chelsea and Spain teammate – at Como.

Getty Images SportWhat comes next for Como?

With their star forward out, Fabregas will be forced to reshuffle his pack for the foreseeable future. The burden of goalscoring will likely fall on Anastasios Douvikas, who has netted three times this season, as the club navigates a busy festive period without their most high-profile player. The injury may also force Como into the January transfer market if the diagnosis worsens, leaving Morata to watch from the stands as his wait for a first goal in Como colours drags on into the new year.

Como are sixth in the league and seven points behind leaders AC Milan and Napoli. They face fourth-placed Roma in their next game on Monday. Last week's 4-0 defeat to title candidates Inter was just their second defeat of the season, having last gone down 1-0 at Bologna in their second Serie A game of the season.

The new Rice: Arsenal chasing "generational" midfielder in £100m move

While they haven’t been perfect, Arsenal have been far and away the best team in the Premier League this season.

Mikel Arteta’s side are sitting four points clear of second place, and while the attack is yet to click fully, the rest of the team have been exceptional.

One of the standout stars, as was the case last year and the season before that, has been Declan Rice.

The England international has been a difference maker on more than one occasion so far, and so fans should be delighted about reports linking Arsenal to someone who could be another Rice-type signing.

Arsenal target another Declan Rice

There are a few stars in contention for Arsenal’s Player of the Season thus far, and Rice is undoubtedly one of them.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

On top of becoming even more of an attacking threat in that left-eight position he moved into last season, the former West Ham United captain has shown more of that defensive steel he was famous for, dropping into a double pivot on several occasions with Martin Zubimendi.

So with the Englishman thriving in all phases of play, it’s not a surprise to see Arsenal moving for another player of his ilk, an international star in the making: Adam Wharton.

At least that is according to a recent report from Spain, which claims the Gunners are one of several sides keen to sign the Crystal Palace star.

The report has revealed that, alongside the North Londoners, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United are racing to sign the 21-year-old, while Real Madrid are also keeping tabs on the situation.

However, on top of beating out the competition, the Gunners will have to stump up around £100m to tempt the Eagles into selling the jewel in their crown.

With all that said, Wharton’s immense ability and potential make him a player worth pushing the boat out for, particularly after an impressive first start for his country during November’s international break.

Why Wharton would be another Rice for Arsenal

Described as “the best U21 player in the Prem” by one analyst, if Arsenal were to bring Wharton to the Emirates in January, it would be another example of them poaching a highly rated central midfielder from another Premier League side.

Moreover, they would once again be taking a non-big six London-based outfit’s best English central midfielder.

Finally, it would be the second time within a three-year period that the North Londoners spend north of £100m to do so.

Now, beyond what would make the deals so similar, what makes the Palace ace analogous to the former West Ham star?

Well, like his older compatriot was at the time of his move, the 21-year-old ace is very highly rated, with former Sky Sports employee Matthew Stanger labelling him a “generational talent” and one CONCACAF B certified coach dubbing him “the best deep-lying English midfielder since Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick.”

While that is indeed supreme praise, it’s easy to see where it has come from, as much like the 72-capped England star, he is capable of doing more than just sitting deep and shielding the back four.

For example, FBref ranks him in the top 1% of midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues for expected assisted goals, the top 4% for key passes, the top 5% for through balls, the top 10% for shot-creating actions, and more, all per 90 minutes.

Additionally, he has already won three senior caps for the Three Lions, and played a pivotal role in the Eagles winning the FA Cup last season – the first major honour in their history.

Ultimately, it is still early in his career, but Wharton looks to be a superstar in the making, and under someone like Arteta, could develop into another Rice-type monster.

Forget Sesko: Man Utd have Van Persie 2.0 who's 'one of the best in the PL'

Manchester United decided to splash the cash on their attack during the summer transfer window after they failed to win any trophies in the 2024/25 campaign.

The Red Devils opted to spend £66.4m on the signing of Slovenia international Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig to lead the line for Ruben Amorim this season.

Sesko provided an assist in the 4-2 win over Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League last weekend, and has had a strong start to life at Old Trafford since his move to England.

The 6 foot 5 centre-forward has scored two goals from 1.81 xG and provided one assist across five starts in the top-flight for the Red Devils so far this season, per Sofascore.

Sesko scored 21 goals in 45 appearances in all competitions for Leipzig in the 2024/25 campaign, after a return of 18 goals in 42 outings in all competitions in his first season in Germany, per Sofascore.

The 22-year-old marksman, having already scored two league goals for United, will be hoping that he can continue to impress and be the first striker since Robin van Persie to score 20 or more Premier League goals in a season.

Why Man United have been looking for their next Robin van Persie

Manchester United have been searching for their next van Persie for around 12 years, as his haul of 26 goals in the Premier League in the 2012/13 campaign is the last time a player hit 20 league goals for the club.

The former Netherlands international, who was signed from rivals Arsenal, netted a staggering 26 goals in the top-flight that season for Sir Alex Ferguson to win the title for the Red Devils, their most recent title to date.

The highlights in the video above show just how lethal the Dutchman was in front of goal for United that season, with his incredible movement in behind and his lethal left foot that consistently buried chances past goalkeepers.

As you can see in the table above, no Manchester United player has come close to what he achieved in the 2012/13 campaign since then, with no player scoring more than 18 Premier League goals.

Sesko will be hoping that he can end that drought for the Red Devils and kick on to be the 20+ goal centre-forward that the club have not had since van Persie’s incredible season, given his aforementioned record for Leipzig and the two goals he has already scored this term.

However, there is another player currently shining at Old Trafford who may be the club’s new version of van Persie, despite not being an out-and-out centre-forward.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The Premier League giants paid £71m to sign winger Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford to bolster their options at the top end of the pitch, and it is safe to say that he has hit the ground running in Manchester.

Why Bryan Mbeumo is Man Utd's new Robin van Persie

The Cameroon international arrived at Old Trafford as a player who had already proven himself in the Premier League during his time with the Bees, just as Van Persie had done with Arsenal prior to his move to the club in 2012.

Mbeumo scored a staggering 20 goals in 38 matches in the top-flight for Brentford in the 2024/25 campaign, per Sofascore, which means that he scored more league goals than any Manchester United player has managed since Van Persie.

As they did with the Dutchman, Manchester United are now profiting from bringing in a player who has already proven himself as a goalscorer in England, as he has provided a huge threat in front of goal for Amorim.

Mbeumo has scored five goals in ten appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils, per Sofascore, and four of those five have come in his nine outings in the Premier League.

The left-footed star scored twice against Brighton in the top-flight on Saturday and his second goal was incredibly van Persie-esque, with a brilliant run across the defenders and a terrific left-footed finish into the roof of the net with power and accuracy.

It was a goal that the former Premier League title winner would have been proud of, and it led to Alice Talks Football to describe him as “one of the best players in the league this season” on X.

It is hard to argue with that assessment when, as you can see in the table above, he has been the most impactful attacking player for the team that currently sit sixth in the Premier League table.

He has been the standout attacking star for United, with the most combined goals and assists and the most xA, and deserves to be in the conversation when fans and pundits speak about the best players in the league this season.

Putting all of this together, it appears as though INEOS and Amorim may have unearthed Manchester United’s new van Persie, as Mbeumo has the lethal left foot, the movement, and the experience to follow in the Dutchman’s footsteps.

Hopefully, supporters will be celebrating next May if the Cameroon international can rake in a 20-plus-goal-haul to earn the club a trophy or two at the end of the season.

Reddy falls at the stroke of lunch, England two away from win

England came to Lord’s looking for six wickets. They bagged four of them before lunch in an inspired morning’s play where their captain Ben Stokes and their returning talismanic fast bowler Jofra Archer brought quality, intensity and fire to proceedings.India were in the mire early when Rishabh Pant, hampered by the injured finger on his left hand, fell on the third over of the day. Three overs later, Stokes got one to nip down the slope at the Nursery end to trap KL Rahul lbw. Stokes bowled a nine-over spell this morning, constantly threatening everyone who made the mistake of standing 22 yards away. This time, the England coaching staff weren’t interfering with his plans. They just let him do his thing.Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Reddy got together with the score at 82 for 7. India’s hopes looked quite dire at the time, but a packed crowd, with a loud Indian contingent cheered them on with every block, every leave, every run scored. Eventually the ball started to lose its hardness and batting became slightly easier. There were 12 false shots leading to the three wickets in the first hour. But only eight in the second.Just as it looked like India would go to the break with their last two recognised batters intact, Chris Woakes gave them a different challenge. Swing instead of seam. And eventually he was able to prise Reddy out for 13 off 53. There remained a fair bit of needle through the morning session with Archer giving Pant a send-off, Stokes and Reddy having a fairly amiable chat at the end of overs and Brydon Carse and Jadeja actually colliding with each other.England were on point with their fielding as well, spurred on by Stokes who was loath to let the intensity drop. Archer took a fine one-handed catch, diving to his right to get rid of Washington Sundar.

'The set-up here is very good' – Newcastle boss Eddie Howe responds to Arne Slot's 'smaller club' jibe after Alexander Isak's Liverpool switch

Eddie Howe stopped short of getting embroiled in a war of words with Arne Slot after the Liverpool boss labelled Newcastle a “smaller club” when questioning their handling of Alexander Isak. The striker was in the process of regaining his match fitness following his British record transfer in the summer, before sustaining a groin injury in the Reds' victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday.

Getty Images SportIsak arrived short of fitness after missing Newcastle's pre-season

After refusing to play for Newcastle in order to force through his £125 million (€144.5m/$169.3m) move to Liverpool on transfer deadline day, Isak arrived at Anfield short of match sharpness. The Sweden international made it clear he did not want to play for the Magpies again, missing the club’s pre-season tour of Asia as well as their opening three Premier League fixtures against Aston Villa, Liverpool and Leeds.

Following the completion of his switch to Liverpool, Isak has been slowly introduced into the fold, with Slot mindful of the forward’s lack of a pre-season. However, after starting alongside fellow summer signing Hugo Ekitike in the thumping 5-1 win over German side Frankfurt in the Champions League, Isak sustained a groin problem at Deutsche Bank Park, meaning he is a doubt for his side’s trip to Brentford on Saturday evening.

"Alexander is not too bad,” said Slot ahead of the Brentford game. “He is a question mark for the weekend so we will see where he is.”

Getty Images SportSlot questions Newcastle's handling of Isak following injury setback

Slot’s update follows his previous comments which saw him question Isak’s treatment at Newcastle as the summer saga surrounding his future played out.

The Dutchman said: “I don't think there's a rule that every single player has the same (pre-season preparation). But it also depends on what he did when he didn't train with the team, what the impact is if you go to a new club as a big signing.

“So you cannot compare, maybe a player who hasn't trained or played in pre-season at a smaller club than if you go to Liverpool.”

Howe refused to get involved in exchange with counterpart Slot

However, when asked about Slot’s accusations following the injury to Isak, Newcastle boss Howe refused to get involved in an exchange with his counterpart, though he did defend the club’s care of their “elite players”.

Speaking ahead of his side’s clash with Fulham on Saturday, Howe said: “The set-up here is very good. It is not perfect, we've got things to improve and to grow. But the owners here have developed the facilities since I've been here very, very well.

“You can see there is building work going on currently to hopefully deliver even better in the future. But I have no complaints. We've got elite athletes here, many of them, and touch wood, we're managing them pretty well at the moment.”

And when asked if he would “go into bat” and defend Newcastle following Slot’s comments, Howe added: “I like the way you’ve worded that… encouraging me to go into bat!

“I don’t have to do that, I don’t feel. You’ve done it for me, reeling off all those things! But you obviously know what my answer would be.

“I don't think that's wise for me to get involved in those discussions. Alex is no longer at this football club, so I won't comment on it.”

Mason Greenwood's Marseille enquire about Endrick as Real Madrid star left 'frustrated' at lack of game time under Xabi Alonso

Mason Greenwood’s Marseille have reportedly made an enquiry for Real Madrid’s teenage forward Endrick, with the Brazilian growing increasingly 'frustrated' over his lack of minutes under Xabi Alonso. The 18-year-old has not featured since recovering from injury and could be open to a January loan exit as he looks to secure game time ahead of next summer’s World Cup.

  • Marseille show interest in Real Madrid's Endrick

Olympique Marseille have officially enquired about signing Real Madrid’s rising star Endrick on loan in January, according to ESPN Brasil. The Ligue 1 outfit, home to former Manchester United star Greenwood, are keen to strengthen their attack with the Brazilian teenager, who has found opportunities hard to come by in Spain. Since returning from an early-season injury, Endrick has not played a single competitive minute for Alonso’s side, prompting speculation that he could seek game time elsewhere to boost his development and World Cup hopes.

Endrick has not played in five months

Endrick’s lack of involvement has become a significant talking point in Madrid and Brazil alike. The youngster has now gone five months without seeing any playing time — an unfamiliar situation for a player once seen as a generational talent at Palmeiras. Sources close to Endrick insist there is no fallout with Alonso, but acknowledge that the manager’s stricter, system-based coaching approach has made it harder for him to break into the lineup. "All of this has affected him. He's frustrated, wanting to prove himself in every training session. He's giving his life," a person close to the player told reporters per ESPN.

As a result, the forward is believed to be growing mentally fatigued by the lack of opportunities, though he remains fully committed to succeeding at Real Madrid in the long term.

Endrick struggling to adapt to Alonso's style

Endrick’s adjustment period under Alonso has reportedly been challenging. The ESPN report states that, unlike former coach Carlo Ancelotti, who nurtured young players with a “fatherly” touch, Alonso’s management is said to follow the “Jose Mourinho school” — focused on tactical rigidity and physical intensity. This has created a competitive environment where established names like Kylian Mbappe dominate the starting spots, leaving little space for young prospects.

Behind the scenes, Mbappe’s unrelenting 'hunger' to play every minute has inadvertently made things more difficult for Endrick. The French star is known to resist rotation, and his presence has reduced opportunities for the teenager to showcase his talent. Those close to Endrick describe the situation as 'psychologically demanding,' though they also acknowledge that patience and perseverance will be crucial in adapting to Real Madrid’s high standards.

In his first full season with the club (2024/25), Endrick logged just 847 minutes across all competitions — the equivalent of fewer than ten full matches. In La Liga, he featured in 22 games but played only 353 minutes, averaging around 16 minutes per appearance. Most of those cameos were late substitute appearances, and he managed only three starts in total.

  • Real Madrid could be open to sending Endrick away on loan

Real Madrid are expected to receive several offers for Endrick once the transfer window opens, with Marseille in the race for a loan move. The French club believe a temporary spell in Ligue 1 could provide the young striker with the regular minutes he needs to continue his progression. However, Endrick’s representatives are in no rush, preferring to observe how the next few weeks unfold before making a decision.

Still just 19 years old, Endrick is viewed internally as a long-term investment rather than an immediate starter. Madrid’s coaching staff are focused on his gradual integration, balancing his physical development and mental growth. Yet, the slow progression has led to growing speculation about a January 2026 loan move, with Marseille among the frontrunners to offer regular minutes.

For Alonso and Madrid, the coming fixtures may determine the youngster’s immediate future. If he continues to sit out matches, a January loan could benefit all parties — offering Endrick experience abroad while relieving squad congestion in Madrid. For Marseille, meanwhile, landing the Brazilian alongside Greenwood could prove a statement move, adding flair and youthful energy to their attack as they aim to challenge Paris Saint-Germain for the Ligue 1 title.

Toluca clinch 2025 Campeones Cup with unbelievable extra-time winner from Federico Pereira in 3-2 victory over LA Galaxy

Antonio Mohamed said Toluca were hungry to lift the Campeones Cup and the Diablos Rojos delivered on his words in a thrilling 3-2 win over the LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park. Despite Gabriel Pec’s 84th-minute strike giving LA Galaxy the lead and a disallowed Paulinho goal earlier, Mohamed’s side dominated the second half and ultimately saw justice served on the field.

While LA were underdogs against the Liga MX champions, they got off to a strong start. Diego Fagúndez put the Galaxy ahead in the 37th minute, converting from the spot after Gabriel Pec was brought down by Jesús Gallardo in a controversial call from referee Iván Barton. Fagúndez has now recorded a goal or an assist in four straight matches for Greg Vanney’s side.

Tensions boiled over just before halftime, leading to the dismissal of Toluca head coach Antonio Mohamed for dissent as the teams headed into the break.

pressed early in the second half and quickly found an equalizer through Nico Castro, whose long-range strike in the 53rd minute clipped the post on its way past Novak Micovic. In the 78th minute, Paulinho appeared to give Toluca a 2-1 lead with a headed finish from a set piece, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

Toluca were still reeling from the disallowed goal when the Galaxy struck what looked like the winner in the 83rd minute. Pec, capping off an outstanding performance, beat Hugo González to put his team ahead. But before the clock hit 90 minutes, Franco Romero silenced Dignity Health Sports Park by smashing home a rebound from a set piece in the 88th to make it 2-2.

The match seemed destined for extra time, but Toluca dashed LA’s hopes in the 90+3rd minute. Uruguayan defender Federico Pereira rose to head home a corner, delivering a dramatic 3-2 victory and the championship. Tempers flared at the final whistle but didn’t escalate beyond some shoving.

Manager Greg Vanney had admitted in his pre-match press conference that winning the Campeones Cup could help salvage what has been a disappointing MLS campaign, with Galaxy sitting bottom of the Western Conference. But that didn’t happen. The defeat puts Vanney back on the hot seat, as LA have had a disappointing title defense this season. The team is already eliminated from the playoffs and sits last in the Western Conference.

'Everyone is always going to say rubbish' – Brooklyn Beckham breaks silence on family feud after snubbing dad David's 50th birthday party

Brooklyn Beckham has broken his silence on the feud that has supposedly ripped an iconic sporting family apart. The eldest child of Manchester United legend David and former Spice Girls popstar Victoria has seemingly severed ties with his mother, father and siblings. Brooklyn was a notable absentee when his ex-England captain dad celebrated turning 50 in May 2025.

Are Brooklyn & David Beckham on speaking terms?

Booklyn formed no part of the lavish parties thrown by David Beckham, who is now working with eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi as a co-owner of MLS side Inter Miami. His brothers Romeo and Cruz were involved, along with sister Harper. Questions were being asked before that point of whether all is well in the Beckham family unit. It is claimed that Brooklyn is no longer on speaking terms with his famous parents.

There have also been reports to suggest that he has blocked his brothers on social media, meaning that no communication takes place there either. Brooklyn did wish a happy birthday to Harper when seeing her turn 14 in July. His wife, Nicola Peltz, also passed on a message. The American actress has found herself at the centre of much of the Beckham feud rumour and gossip. Brooklyn and Nicola recently renewed their wedding vows without inviting David, Victoria and Co to that ceremony.

  • What Brooklyn said about supposed Beckham feud

Brooklyn is focused on his own life for now, with the 24-year-old forming part of the pre-Ryder Cup activities in New York – ahead of that epic golfing showdown between Team USA and Team Europe taking place at the iconic and notoriously difficult to navigate Bethpage Black course. Beckham lined up for an A-list European side against American opposition in a celebrity event.

Brooklyn was inevitably quizzed on the apparent breakdown in his relationship with David, Victoria, Romeo and Cruz, but was quick to shrug off that probing and play down the intense speculation that he continues to generate. He told the : “There's always going to be people saying negative things but I have a very supportive wife. Me and her, we just do our thing, we just keep our heads down and work. And we're happy.”

Brooklyn went on to say, while pointing out that he “never” worries what people outside of his close circle of friends have to say in the global media and online: “Everyone is always going to say rubbish. I just try and do this, play some golf with some friends. It's good fun.”

He paired up with former NBA star Toni Kukoc at the Ryder Cup event, as they faced off against comedian Colin Jost and Super Bowl-winning ex-New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning. Unsurprisingly, Beckham found himself becoming an easy target for those in the crowd – not that he has any issue with that.

He said of attracting taunts on the tee box and fairways: “I feel like they didn't like me at all – but it was amazing. They gave me a bit of rubbish but I kind of expected it – being in New York, going against Eli… they were just laughing. But it is what it is, I was having fun out there. I did the best I could. It was honestly just really fun. Honestly, it was really nerve-wracking… but it was such a cool experience – I couldn't say no. It was amazing.”

  • What does Brooklyn Beckham do for a living?

Brooklyn said he is now planning to head back to Los Angeles, rather than hang around on the east coast, with his wife being left at home in California with their four dogs. He also stated that he needs to “get back to work”.

Beckham worked as a model and a photographer before building a hot sauce brand called Cloud 23. That number offers a nod towards the shirt that his father wore when representing Real Madrid and first moving to the United States and joining the LA Galaxy.
