Man Utd linked to Nathan Patterson

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing up a move for Rangers defender Nathan Patterson as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to bolster his backline.

What’s the story?

According to 90min, the Red Devils are set to target a new right-back over the January window after missing out on Kieran Tripper in the summer, with the Gers’ 19-year-old gem identified as an alternative option.

The report states that: “United’s scouts have now been instructed to look at options other than Trippier, should they decide to push ahead and sign a right-back in the winter window.

“Rangers captain James Tavernier was a player considered by United in the summer, but while he remains a possibility, it’s another member of Steven Gerrard’s title-winning side that is now of interest – teenage sensation Nathan Patterson.”

However, the Old Trafford outfit are not the only interested party in the Scotland international. Fellow Premier League side Everton are also listed as potential suitors, while 90min claim that more than a dozen teams across Europe have shown an interest.

Fans would love him

The right-back position has been a problem area for United for some time now. And while current incumbent Aaron Wan-Bissaka has showcased his top-class defensive qualities on many occasions, he continues to struggles in an attacking sense. For instance, he has only managed 0.2 shots and 0.7 key passes per match in his career so far.

Atletico Madrid’s Trippier was targeted in the previous window, but although he expressed his desire to return to English shores, the reigning La Liga champions refused to lower their £34m asking price, meaning a deal could not be concluded.

That led to Diogo Dalot staying put in Manchester after a successful loan spell with AC Milan throughout 2020/21, although a slow start to the season from the Portugal international means he could be allowed to leave if another body is brought in.

And Patterson is one of the stars understood to be high up on Solskjaer’s wishlist. The youngster has caught the eye throughout his 20 appearances for the Glasgow giants, with his trademark burst down the flank endearing him to the supporters.

His impressive displays for his boyhood club have already earned him three international caps for Scotland and a standout display against Moldova saw talkSPORT presenter David Tanner laud the full-back for his positive performance.

Tanner wrote on Twitter: “This is why young Nathan Patterson got the nod over Stephen O’Donnell at right back for this particular game. Sensational energy in attack.”

Although he’s very inexperienced at senior level, Patterson’s attacking ability, energy and ability to improve have the potential to make him a firm fans favourite at Old Trafford, and United supporters would surely love to see him line up at the Theatre of Dreams in the near future.

Rangers must hand Balogun a new deal

Rangers centre-back Leon Balogun sent a strong message to sporting director Ross Wilson on Sunday as he put in a sublime performance against St Mirren.

Steven Gerrard admitted that the centre-back was a doubt heading into the game after he suffered an injury against Brondby last Thursday.

He told The Herald: “We are hoping we have got to it before there is a tweak or any muscle damage.

“We are hoping it is a little bit of tightness and we will know in the next 24 hours. I will certainly be praying tonight. He felt something in his hamstring. That’s what he came off with, but he wasn’t sure if he felt something or whether it was a bit of tightness.

“We will work that out in the next 24 hours and hopefully he will pull through because he is important for us. I thought his performance was top tonight as well.”

The Nigeria international was able to pull through and produce an excellent display at the back alongside Connor Goldson to ensure the Gers won 2-1 and it should serve as a reminder to Wilson that he has a big decision to make.

Balogun is out of contract at the end of the season and the club hold an option to extend it by one year. Firstly, Wilson must trigger this extension and ensure that he stays for another season at least. Secondly, the Gers chief must negotiate a longer-term deal and keep him at Ibrox in the long-run.

At the age of 33, he is still going strong and producing consistently impressive performances in the Scottish Premiership. This suggests that he is not slowing down, despite his age, and could have more than one year left in the tank.

The defender recorded a SofaScore rating of 7.0 against St Mirren and was a rock at the back in front of Jon McLaughlin. Per SofaScore, he won nine of his 14 duels, whilst making two tackles and four clearances throughout the game as no opposition player managed to dribble past him. He also completed 89% of his passes, highlighting the quality he provides in possession as well as out of it.

This was not a one-off performance from the experienced battler. He has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.10 in the Premiership this term, winning 62% of his duels and completing 86% of his passes over the course of the campaign so far.

He is proving that age is merely a number and Wilson must act now to ensure that he does not end up leaving Rangers and weakening Gerrard’s squad. His departure would be a huge blow for the club, given the nature of his performances on the pitch, and that is why they must act now to secure his future in Glasgow.

Rajasthan Royals sign unknown pace bowler

The Rajasthan Royals have picked a young fast bowler, Kamran Khan, out of obscurity for the second season of the IPL

Cricinfo staff17-Feb-2009The Rajasthan Royals have picked a young fast bowler, Kamran Khan, out of obscurity for the second season of the IPL. Not much is known about him except that he impressed Darren Berry, Rajasthan’s director of coaching, during a recent Twenty20 tournament in Mumbai.Kamran, 18, a left-arm fast bowler, has never played first-class cricket. Primarily a tennis-ball bowler, he now finds himself with a Rs 12 lakh (approximately $24,000) contract with Rajasthan. “I can’t express how happy I am. I knew I would play for a big team one day, but I never thought it would come so early,” Kamran, 18, told , the Mumbai-based tabloid. His coach, Naushan Khan, told Cricinfo that his ward, who joined him five years ago, was a complete novice when he came to Mumbai from his hometown, Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh. “He was very raw when he first met me, and most of his experience was, and remains, with a tennis ball,” said Naushan. “We have worked on his action and tried to develop him into a proper pace bowler. Kamran’s work will hopefully start to yield results. I don’t think it has really hit Kamran yet that he will be in the same squad as so many big players.”We entered him into the Mumbai Police squad for a Twenty20 tournament at the DY Patil Stadium recently, and he impressed plenty there. Darren Berry happened to be there and he was impressed with Kamran.”Kamran took seven wickets in three matches in the Twenty20 tournament. This is not the first time the Rajasthan management has unearthed a player and sent everyone scurrying to find out his antecedents. Before the inaugural IPL they signed up the greenhorn Dinesh Salunkhe, who came into the spotlight through a TV talent-hunt show but had yet to play a first-class match.

ECB confirms two-year IPL commitment

The ECB has confirmed that England players will be available for a three-week window in the IPL for the next two years

Cricinfo staff27-Jan-2009The ECB has confirmed that England players will be available for a three-week window in the IPL for the next two years. Eight centrally contracted players, including Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff, and five with incremental deals have been granted No Obligation Certificates (NOCs) and can be put up for the player auction in Goa on February 6.Last week an agreement was reached regarding the 2009 tournament but Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, said he wanted a two-year commitment from the players ahead of the auction. Those players who earn deals next month will return to India for another stint in 2010. The ECB and BCCI also said they were working together to ensure next year’s IPL is run at a “materially similar” time of the year to allow England players to participate. The calendar is again tight next year with a World Twenty20 scheduled for April in West Indies before England begin their home season in May.Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, has welcomed the BCCI-ECB deal and called it “long overdue”. “The final auction list will be out very soon now,” Modi told Cricinfo.Apart from Pietersen and Flintoff, the centrally contracted England players now certain to feature on that list are James Anderson, Ian Bell, Paul Collingwood, Monty Panesar, Ryan Sidebottom, Stephen Harmison, while Ravi Bopara, Samit Patel, Owais Shah, Graeme Swann and Luke Wright are also set to be put forward.Pietersen, who is being wooed by Bangalore, and Fintoff, who is expected to attract strong bids from Mumbai and Chennai, will be the prime picks at the auction. Franchise officials estimate that Pietersen, the top draw at the player auction on February 6 could fetch up to US$ 1.5 million dollars.Representatives from both boards met during England’s tour of India late last year and also recently in Singapore to iron out the details. The two boards have also agreed to schedule Test and ODI series over a four-year cycle commencing in 2011.”The discussions held between our respective boards have been most productive and ECB is grateful to the president and honorary secretary of BCCI for the excellent relationship which has been developed with the BCCI on a wide ranging number of issues,” David Collier, the ECB chief executive, said.”Our agreement is good for the players, the respective boards, our counties and for cricket. We look forward to welcoming India, the reigning ICC World Twenty20 champions, to England for the ICC World Twenty20 this summer and for the tour of England and Wales in 2011.”Officials from BCCI and ECB will now lead discussions among various national boards to arrive at a consensus on a window for the IPL next year, possibly as soon as the ICC meeting in Perth this month-end – the current April-May window clashes with the World Twenty20 in the West Indies. “We are quite confident that we can work out mutually acceptable dates,” Modi said. The IPL franchises, meanwhile, have welcomed the ECB’s two-year commitment and called it the right decision. “Teams, like companies, need continuity to succeed at the highest level,” Tim Wright, chief executive of Deccan Chargers told Cricinfo. “This sets the auction up beautifully and the teams that win the bidding for Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen will be in for some thrills.”

Romero in contention for Spurs v Chelsea

As relayed by Tottenham Hotspur’s official website, manager Nuno Espirito Santo could welcome back summer signing Cristian Romero, with a return against Chelsea today not ruled out for the 23-year-old.

The Lowdown: Croatia three back in London…

After their international debacle, returning from a 10-day training camp in Croatia to maintain fitness levels, it appears that Romero, Giovani Lo Celso and Davinson Sanchez are back in the English capital.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news-2/” title=”Spurs latest news…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The South American trio have been unable to return to Spurs after joining up with their red-listed countries, with Spurs sending them to Croatia in an attempt to avoid them having to quarantine in a UK-based hotel (Evening Standard).

The Latest: Spurs drop pre-Chelsea injury message…

Relaying some injury news ahead of the Chelsea clash, it appears that Romero and his fellow South Americans could now come into contention to feature today following their stint abroad, as per an update from Spurs’ official website.

While their inclusion still needs to be assessed, Nuno could be boosted by the return of his Argentine summer signing in particular, refusing to rule him out from featuring this afternoon.

Spurs’ report claimed that Romero, alongside Lo Celso and Sanchez, ‘may come into frame’ for today’s highly-anticipated clash against their bitter London rivals and Champions League holders.

The Verdict: Huge boost…

Potentially having the 2020/21 Serie A MVP award winner as the league’s best defender back in his side will come as a huge boost for Nuno, especially considering that Romero is yet to show his very best and could decide to turn it on against Chelsea.

Lauded as ‘phenomenal’ by Serie A journalist Conor Clancy (via This is Futbol), the 23-year-old would come as a stellar defensive option to cope with the pace and power of Romelu Lukaku. It’s no coincidence that, in Romero’s absence over the last week, Spurs shipped five goals over their two matches against Crystal Palace and Rennes.

Mushfiqur confident of tackling Muralitharan

Bangladesh wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim is confident his batsmen can negate the threat of Muttiah Muralitharan in the upcoming two-Test series at home against Sri Lanka, starting on Friday in Dhaka

Bangladesh wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim is confident his batsmen can negate the threat of Muttiah Muralitharan in the upcoming two-Test series at home against Sri Lanka, starting on Friday in Dhaka.”The Sri Lankan bowling has a lot of variety especially in the longer-version game but without any doubt, Murali is the main threat,” Mushfiqur said. “It was not so easy to read his but what I feel is that now we can read it much better.”The 20-year-old has a reason to feel positive, as his highest score of 80 came against the same opposition in Colombo last July. His 191-run partnership with Mohammad Ashraful in that match though couldn’t prevent Bangladesh from losing by an innings.”I’m now more mature to handle this bowler while Ash [Mohammad Ashraful] had a good record against Sri Lanka as he’s got some runs against them. He proved that nothing is impossible,” he said.Mushfiqur has played 12 Tests and, in addition to the 13 catches and one stumping, has scored 409 runs at 18.59 – a statistic he will be keen to improve on.He also believed the batsmen needed to be courageous enough to survive against Muralitharan, the highest wicket-taker in Tests. “It would be unwise to be bogged down against him [Muralitharan], rather we have to be brave enough to handle him. We have to make sure that we rotate the strike to keep the scoreboard running,” he said.Mushfiqur remained optimistic despite Bangladesh’s two previous series losses against the only teams they have played this year: New Zealand and South Africa. While they lost 0-1 in the two-match series at home to New Zealand in October, they lost both Tests in South Africa last month. Bangladesh have played eight Tests in 2008, losing seven and drawing a rain-affected game.”We want to play good positive cricket in the series. I think we already proved that we have got the ability as a team to play good cricket but the problem is that all of the departments like batting, bowling could not click simultaneously. Anything can happen if our bowling and batting click together,” said Mushfiqur.Mushfiqur, who is a lower-order batsman, said he was ready to bat at the top if needed, though his main focus would be to serve the team first. “For me the team comes first. I am ready to bat at any position. The main thing is to contribute something for the team.”

Aston Villa: Fans react to Monster partnership

Aston Villa confirmed on Wednesday that they have partnered with Monster as the club’s new official energy drink partner.

And, as to be expected, the club update had a lot of Villa fans talking on social media.

Villa’s Premier League rivals Wolves announced their partnership with the same company just last week, and Villa have now followed suit by agreeing on a two-year deal.

The energy drink company will promote their brand at Wolves on LED advertising boards during match days, so they may well end up doing the same at Villa Park as well as engaging with the club’s global fanbase.

Villa fans recently reacted to partnerships with Luke 1977 and Socios, and they were at it again following the club’s latest announcement.

Villa shared the news regarding their partnership with Monster on their official Twitter page on Wednesday.

These Villa supporters weren’t exactly thrilled at the announcement, though, with one labelling it as ‘embarrassing’.

Traore can complete Spurs’ deadline day

Tottenham Hotspur could end deadline day with a bang if they manage to seal a move for mooted target Adama Traore…

What’s the word?

Earlier in the day, Football Insider reported that super-agent Jorge Mendes was playing a huge role in trying to bring the Spanish winger to north London before tonight’s 11pm deadline.

It’s thought that negotiations over various types of structured deals have taken place after Wolves rebuffed a loan bid from Spurs, though they are willing to listen to further offers.

Since then, football.london’s Alasdair Gold has played down their chances of getting it over the line in time.

“Wolves are standing firm at the moment. Spurs aren’t currently hopeful of anything happening for him today. Perhaps it’s one to look at again in the future as Nuno [Santo] and [Fabio] Paratici do love him,” he revealed in a Q&A with supporters.

It’s thought that the Midlands outfit value him in the region of £40m.

Get it done!

If Spurs can complete a move for Traore before 11pm, then it would be one hell of a way to end the transfer window.

Nuno does have plenty of options in the wide department but perhaps not enough on the right-hand side of midfield, where the Spanish winger has been a regular threat for Wolves, both now and under the Portuguese in recent times.

Last season, no player in the entire top-flight managed as many dribbles per game (4.1) as Traore, whilst he was fouled a whopping 2.3 times per match (third-highest in the division).

It’s no wonder Jurgen Klopp once lauded him as “unplayable” after his Liverpool side had to combat his explosive pace and physicality.

Similarly, BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand has previously described the 5 foot 10 winger as a “machine,” adding: “He’s powerful and quick and this season he has been scaring defenders. You see teams now trying to double up against him because of the threat he possesses.”

None of Spurs’ current wide options have matched Traore’s dribbling ability so far this season – for example, Nuno’s current first-choice on the right, Steven Bergwijn, has averaged only 1.3 dribbles per game, via WhoScored.

He would be a clear upgrade, as evident above, and one who would surely leave the fanbase excited. If Spurs want to end the window with a bang, then Paratici and co must look to sanction this move.
