Johnson provides update on O’Nien injury

Sunderland manager Lee Johnson has revealed that Luke O’Nien is set to play out the rest of the season with his shoulder injury before having it looked at for a permanent fix.

The Black Cats boss has praised the medical staff for their work with O’Nien and said that the ex-Wycombe man may need to deal with it dislocating regularly between now and the end of the campaign.

He told the Sunderland Echo:“The physio and doctor have done a great job again. With that kind of injury, when they dislocate, the danger is the length of time that the shoulder is out. If that’s three or four hours, that’s a big problem. If it’s 20 seconds, it’s different.“Hopefully, we’ll be able to get through to the end of the season, but inevitably, he’ll probably need that shoulder pinned eventually.“If he can handle it keeping on coming out and going back in, then we’ll be okay. But it’s a fine line. You want to protect him in the long term, but at the same time, we need him.” Fans will be relieved

Sunderland fans will be relieved to hear this update from Johnson as it means that O’Nien should not miss a chunk of the current season through injury.

If all goes according to plan, the midfielder will be able to play through to May with assistance from the medical staff before potentially having surgery in the off-season.

The alternative solution is for him to fix it now and miss crucial matches in League One as Sunderland mount a promotion bid, which is not what the fans will be wanting to happen.

O’Nien has had a strong start to the campaign on the pitch. In three starts in midfield, he has averaged an excellent WhoScored rating of 6.98 – making an average of four tackles and interceptions per game. This shows how big of a role he has played so far for the Black Cats, with three wins from their first four League One matches.

Back in 2019, former Sunderland boss Jack Ross heaped praise on the former Wycombe utility man as he told The Chronicle: “He ticked a lot of boxes and then even when we did one-v-one stuff in training, he is awkward to get past, he is physical, competitive, and he doesn’t like people going by him.

“He has been a revelation in that respect, and credit to him for how he has faced that challenge.”

This, along with his statistics this season, highlights how important the £4k-per-week beast is to Sunderland and why fans will be delighted that he is set to continue playing, despite the injury.

Hopefully, this decision will not cause any long-term damage and he will be able to manage his way through the campaign.

LFC fans love Fabinho’s Scouse impression

Some Liverpool supporters have been reacting positively to Fabinho’s hilarious impression of a Scouser in a social media post.

The start of the 2021/22 season is edging closer all the time, with excitement building ahead of the Reds’ Premier League opener away to Norwich City next month.

The majority of Liverpool’s squad are now back in pre-season training, although some are still enjoying some time off after their involvement in summer tournaments.

One of those is Fabinho, who helped Brazil reach the final of Copa America, which they lost to arch-rivals Argentina.

On Sunday, the 27-year-old was taking part in a fan Q&A on Instagram and a video emerged on Twitter of him doing an impression of a Scouser, as requested by a supporter.

Fabinho is heard saying “Want some chicken, lad?” in what is an excellent impression, illustrating that he has integrated nicely into the Merseyside community.

In other news, two clubs are reportedly interested in signing one Reds player this summer – find out who it is here.

Shinnie has game to forget despite draw

It would hardly be an overstatement to say that the build-up to Derby County’s Championship campaign has been one of the most challenging any team has ever endured ahead of a new season.

Indeed, with Wayne Rooney having just nine fit outfield players prior to the arrival of centre-back pair Curtis Davies and Richard Stearman on Friday, it appeared – for a worrying length of time – as if the 35-year-old would struggle to muster up 11 players for the fixture against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Despite this, the Rams put up an incredibly valiant display against the Terriers, taking the lead in the match through the impressive Curtis Davies late on in the first half, only for Huddersfield centre-back Naby Sarr to repeat his counterpart’s feat on the stroke of half time, with the game ultimately finishing honours even.

However, while there were a number of fine performances in the Derby ranks, with Rooney undoubtedly delighted with his team getting something out of the game, there were also a few concerning displays – perhaps most notably from Graeme Shinnie.

While the midfielder picked up the Jack Stamps Player of the Year award for last season before the game, if his performances remain at the level of the Huddersfield clash going forwards, he will certainly struggle to win it again for 2021/22.

Indeed, the 30-year-old was wasteful with the ball, completing none of his five attempted crosses and just one of his four attempted long balls and giving away possession on a whopping 18 occasions.

The £6.2k-per-week man also lost eight of his 15 duels over the course of the 90 minutes, in addition to being dribbled past once and conceding three fouls – with The Telegraph journalist and self-professed Derby fan Ryan Bourne stating his belief that Shinnie looked well “off the pace” in the game.

All in all, the Scotland international’s metrics saw him earn a SofaScore match rating of 6.5, the joint third-worst of the 11 Rams players to start the fixture.

As such, with Derby facing what is sure to be a long and arduous Championship campaign in 2021/22, they will certainly need one of their best performers from last season to step up his game if they are to have any hope of securing survival in the division come next May.

No advanced Liverpool talks for Sanches

Liverpool are not currently close to signing Renato Sanches but the player has long been ‘appreciated’ by the club, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has told Anfield Watch.

The lowdown

Sanches made 23 Ligue 1 appearances, including 14 starts, for Lille last season as they beat Paris Saint-Germain to the Ligue 1 title. The former Bayern Munich midfielder averaged 1.7 dribbles, 3.5 successful long balls and 0.8 key passes per game (via WhoScored).

Sanches then made four appearances for Portugal at the European Championship and caught the eye, with BBC Sport’s Jermaine Jenas hailing him as ‘terrific’.

It was reported in regional newspaper La Voix du Nord this week that Liverpool are ‘very interested’ in the 23-year-old. Encouragingly, one ‘experienced agent’ says that any ‘decent talent’ outside of PSG ‘has a value right now’ amid a financial crisis in French football (via The Athletic).

Liverpool may therefore be able to strike a cut-price deal for a player who could replace Paris-bound Georginio Wijnaldum.

The latest

Romano says that recruiting a midfielder is not Liverpool’s current priority, and as such a deal for Sanches isn’t thought to be imminent. Instead, he urged any Reds fans keen on Sanches to be patient.

“From what I know, it is not a done deal,” he told Anfield Watch, adding: “It is not yet at an advanced stage because, what I have been told, the strategy for Liverpool is not going immediately for a midfielder.

“He has always been appreciated but at the moment, it is not advanced yet. So we need to wait a bit on this deal.”

The verdict

Sanches is a gifted player, and his ability to glide through challenges as he drives forward makes him particularly easy on the eye.

However, this isn’t a deal Liverpool should pursue. Wijnaldum was hardly ever injured, but Sanches’ fitness record makes for worrying reading, so he doesn’t fit the bill as a replacement for the Dutchman.

After a succession of injuries decimated their Premier League title defence, the Reds ought to proceed with caution with regards to the Lille maestro.

In other news, there’s one surprise omission from Liverpool’s pre-season squad.

Essex take Division Two title

Essex have taken the Division Two title in the Frizzell County Championship, beating Nottinghamshire by seven wickets at Chelmsford. Nottinghamshire were already assured of promotion themselves. Essex began the day needing another 211 runs with eight wickets in hand. They lost Mark Waugh when the Australian had made 76 at better than a run a ball and had put on 125 with Will Jefferson who was joined by Aftab Habib. The pair took Essex to their target without wasting any time. When the Jefferson hit the winning runs off the bowling of the Paul Johnson, playing his last match for Nottinghamshire before retiring, the tall opener was on 165, with Habib on 57.Worcestershire were set 373 to win by Derbyshire – and got them with one wicket to spare. That last man was none other than Graeme Hick, who came in at number 11 suffering from a fractured thumb. David Leatherdale with 89 not out and Gareth Batty with 74 had made the win possible with a stand of 122 for the fifth wicket, Matt Mason, who went into this match with a first-class batting average of 7.50, scored fifty, but when the ninth wicket fell there were still 13 runs required. Hick scored ten of them. Kevin Dean finished a fine season with another five wickets.Glamorgan batted on to reach 528 for seven before declaring. M.J. Powell (Michael) was out for 92, while Robert Croft was 71 not out when he set Northamptonshire an unlikely 447 to win. Another M.J. Powell, this time Mark, was the man to hold up the Glamorgan bowlers with an innings of 108 as his side made 242 for six to secure the draw.In Division One, Warwickshire pulled of a stirring victory by three wickets against Sussex at Hove to secure runners-up spot behind Surrey. Warwickshire needed 401 to win in the fourth innings and thanks to a hundred from – that’s right – M.J. Powell (Michael again), ninety from Dominic Ostler and 79 not out from Dougie Brown, Warwickshire made it.Meanwhile the champions, Surrey, went on to 492 for nine before they declared with Adam Hollioake recording a double hundred and Ali Brown a mere single. Leicestershire were in all sorts of trouble at 11 for four before 68 from Neil Burns halted the slide. But the reprieve was only temporary as Tim Murtagh finished with five for 39, Leicestershire were bowled out for 142 and Surrey finished their triumphant season with a win by the little matter of 483 runs.
