Sempre vai sobrar gente importante – afirmou nesta tarde.

Stanway insists the Lionesses are ready to "put things right on the pitch" against the Netherlands after a disappointing defeat to France in their opening game of the European Championship. That defeat means that Sarina Wiegman's side must win to keep their qualification hopes in their own hands, but they face a tricky test against a Dutch team who thumped Wales 3-0 in their opener.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

England are, of course, reigning champions, and also reached the 2023 World Cup final, and Stanway insists that she and her team-mates are ready to show exactly what they are made of in what has turned into a do-or-die fixture.

  • WHAT STANWAY SAID

Stanway told reporters: "What we want going forward is to make actions and stop talking. I didn't want to do the press conference today because I'm fed up of talking now.

"It's time that we focus and we want to put things right on the pitch in order for us to be able to talk. We want to create action from what happened on Saturday and the only way to do that is the game."

She added: "We want the game to come around as quick as possible. We want to make change.

"We've spoken about wanting to be 'proper England' and going back to what we're good at and our traditional style of football — tough tackles and remembering why we're here. Sometimes it's about blocking out the noise and getting on the pitch and getting stuck in.

"I had a message from someone I know that said: 'It is just like a bad night out and you want to forget it as much as possible. Move onto the next one. That's exactly what we're going to do."

Neymar has entertained millions of fans all over the world during spells with Barcelona, PSG and the Brazil national team. The forward's skill and goalscoring ability have never been in question but he's also come under fire for his theatrics over the years. Neymar acquired a reputation for diving during his time in Europe and in World Cups with Brazil, and former Champions League referee Felix Brych has admitted he had to learn how to handle the superstar.

  • WHAT BRYCH SAID

Brych was asked which player produced the best dives in football and told Focus: "Well, it's been difficult for the diving kings because of the video referee. But before that, of course, I knew my stuff. Neymar was practically legendary, and certainly not without reason. The more his face contorted in pain, the more calmly I let the game play out. A player in severe pain immediately falls to the ground and doesn't roll around the field forever."

Barcelona have their perfect 10: Lamine Yamal is ready for weight of Lionel Messi's iconic shirt number

The Spain wonderkid needs to be wary of the pitfalls of global fame as he follows in the footsteps of a Blaugrana legend

After many months of anticipation, Lamine Yamal finally signed his new six-year contract at Barcelona on Wednesday. That agreement reportedly made the teenage winger the highest-paid player in Hansi Flick's squad on an annual salary of €30 million ($34 million), which is a reward for his incredible contribution to the team's domestic treble success in 2024-25.

But perhaps most importantly, Yamal was also bestowed with the No.10 jersey previously worn by Lionel Messi. That iconic shirt was vacated when Ansu Fati joined Monaco on loan earlier this summer, with the academy graduate ultimately unable to handle the weight of history that came with it.

It's very difficult to imagine Yamal experiencing the same problem, though. "I don't feel pressure; I'm at the best club in the world. Messi has made his way, I'm going to make mine, and the '10' comes from Ansu anyway. I'll try to make my own way," he told Barca's official media channels.

That fearlessness is what has set Yamal apart from his peers since his stunning breakthrough in the senior team. Walking the same path as Messi, and the likes of Ronaldinho, Romario and Diego Maradona before him, does not faze the Spain international. After all, he had already racked up 74 goal contributions for club and country en route to winning four major titles, including the European Championship, prior to turning 18 on July 13.

Yamal may even become the youngest Ballon d'Or winner ever later this year, having consistently delivered awe-inspiring performances in the biggest matches. The sky is the limit if he continues on his current trajectory. But to do that, Yamal will have to avoid the same trap Neymar fell into back when the Brazilian also had the world at his feet in Catalonia.

Birthday party controversy

Yamal's new contract has been somewhat overshadowed by the headlines generated from his lavish 18th birthday party last Sunday. It has been reported that around 200 guests attended the bash at a rented country mansion in the town of Olivella, including a host of musicians and influencers as well as team-mates Robert Lewandowski, Alejandro Balde, Gavi and Raphinha.

As per , there was a cocktail bar area and gourmet catering, while a huge cake decorated with chocolate pistols and wads of banknotes was rolled in to fit the 'Italian Mafia' party theme. Yamal set the tone by wearing a striking all-white suit complete with a red rose and diamond-encrusted cane.

But controversy was sparked when a group of dwarves was filmed heading to the venue. They were allegedly hired by Yamal to provide entertainment, which has been described as "unacceptable in the 21st century" by the Association of People with Achondroplasia and other Skeletal Dysplasias in Spain (ADEE).

The ADEE also filed a complaint with the Spanish government calling for a full investigation "to determine whether the law and, therefore, the rights of people with disabilities have been violated".

One of the dwarves who was allegedly present at the party has since insisted to that everything was above board and "we do this job because we want to", but, at best, the whole incident will go down as a serious error of misjudgement on Yamal's part and, at worst, his reputation could be permanently tarnished.

AdvertisementInstagramNeymar a 'bad influence'?

According to Spanish journalist Pipi Estrada, Barcelona are "very worried" about Yamal's behaviour away from the pitch this summer. The teenage ace was also seen on holiday with OnlyFans model Fati Vazquez, and he visited former Barca star Neymar at his home in Mangaratiba, Rio de Janeiro.

Yamal documented his trip to Brazil for his fans on social media as he played footvolley with Neymar, relaxed by the swimming pool and exchanged shirts with the Santos poster boy, who is currently trying to rebuild his career at his childhood club after an injury-plagued spell in Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal. But the has reported that concerns have been raised over Neymar being a potentially 'bad influence' on Yamal.

Neymar initially developed a party-goer reputation at Barcelona between 2013 and 2017, which threatened to get out of control after his world-record transfer to Paris Saint-Germain. The Brazil international made more headlines for his appearances at nightclubs in the French capital than he did for his footballing exploits, and was regularly criticised for a perceived lack of commitment.

Some of that was a touch unfair given Neymar was also dealt a cruel hand with injuries, but there's no doubt he didn't do enough to justify his €222 million (£200m/$262m) price tag at the Parc des Princes. In that sense, perhaps Neymar is not the best role model for Yamal as he starts to take on even greater responsibility at Barcelona.

Getty ImagesCan't become distracted

Neymar achieved great things at Barcelona, winning La Liga and the Champions League while forming part of the acclaimed 'MSN' front three alongside Messi and Luis Suarez, but the consensus is that he never quite reached his full potential. That could be a mindset issue, but it's also possible he just didn't strike the perfect balance between work and play.

Yamal shrugged off the backlash around his 18th birthday party by saying, "I work for Barca, but when I’m outside the training ground, I enjoy my life" – which is absolutely fine, but he must be careful to ensure he doesn't become distracted. If Yamal allows his level to drop even slightly, and Barcelona suffer a dip in results, he will be subject to the same widespread disapproval that Neymar endured.

Even though Yamal is just a kid who is still maturing physically and mentally, he will be judged as an adult because he's already earned a standing among football's elite. Fortunately, he has a strong support network.

According to columnist Guillem Ballague, Yamal's parents "play a crucial role in keeping his feet on the ground" and are not afraid to "tell it as it is". They have not only helped to nurture Yamal's singular talent, but also drummed into his head the importance of hard work and striving for excellence.

"My ambition is simple: to keep winning and improving every day – I'm still young, and there's so much ahead of me," Yamal added at his contract signing. As long as he maintains that attitude, the future is very bright, for him and Barcelona.

Yamal has the competitive edge required to be one of the greats, but also plays with a carefree abandon that makes him so thrilling to watch. That's why he is so often compared to Messi, who was similarly bold and creative in his early years at Barca, but the Argentine magician has always been a quiet character who doesn't seek out the spotlight.

In stark contrast, Yamal seems to relish it. He's reportedly one of the loudest members of the current Barca dressing room, and has no qualms about using social media as a tool to wind up his rivals or detractors.

While Messi took time to adjust to fame, Yamal is seemingly unburdened by self-consciousness. That may go some way to explaining why he is actually a lot further ahead in his development than Messi was at the same age.

Indeed, Yamal has played 200 more minutes for Barcelona than Messi had managed by the time he'd turned 21. At 18, Messi had just one professional goal to his name and no assists, while he had yet to win his first cap for Argentina. Yamal has already scored 25 goals in a Barca shirt and set up another 34, and has made 21 appearances for Spain.

Those statistics are simply extraordinary, but even more impressive is the fact that Barca already rely on Yamal as their main source of inspiration, which was not the case for Messi until Ronaldinho left the club.

Jaiswal does not regret missing out on a hundred

“Of course, it would have been amazing. But what took me there was my thinking and my process to score runs”

India’s innings was only the second time in Test cricket since August 2018 that the first five wickets fell to attacking shots. And judging from the words of one of their three half-centurions, that approach isn’t going away any time soon.India’s batters bazballed England, particularly on the first day, with the help of a Yashasvi Jaiswal running amok. The 22-year-old opener playing his first Test at home hit the first ball of the innings for four and the first ball of spin for six. That is the way he wants to play and he has no regrets that it was also the way he was dismissed, 20 runs short of a century.”Of course, it would have been amazing if I would have scored a hundred,” Jaiswal said on Friday at the post-match press conference. “But what took me there was my thinking and my process to score runs and I was quite positive in my mind and I was just thinking, making sure I can build an innings. But it was good actually.”This is my first Test match in India and I was just thinking of contributing well and doing well for my team. When I was playing in the West Indies and South Africa, it was quite a different environment. Here also the environment is quite different. I was really enjoying all the places, of course. It is a proud and honour moment every time I go and play for my country.”Jaiswal seemed to enjoy the fact that all three of England’s frontline spinners were turning the ball into him and took a particular liking to the debutant Tom Hartley. That head-to-head read 44 runs in 26 balls with six fours and two sixes. When asked if it was a deliberate tactic, Jaiswal answered, “No I don’t think so. I was just thinking about how I can play a certain ball.”It wasn’t until the innings was in its 24th over that someone whose stock ball goes away from Jaiswal came on. He walloped Joe Root for four second ball of the day but fell two balls later, caught playing an aggressive shot.”I knew that at some stage he was going to bowl. I was prepared for him. He can bowl first over. But as I said, I was trying my best to do what I could and sometimes I can make a mistake and get out. Still, I’m learning. If I do make a mistake, I’ll make sure that I try to learn from it.”

Bartlett makes a massive impact on 'almost not real' Australia debut

“He looked like he belonged,” Shai Hope says of Xavier Bartlett

Alex Malcolm02-Feb-2024No one predicted Xavier Bartlett would be playing for Australia this summer. Not even Xavier Bartlett. The fact that he made his debut in an ODI, having not played a 50-over List A game for Queensland since September 2022, makes it even more remarkable. Before the BBL, where he dominated the tournament taking 20 wickets in Brisbane Heat’s title win, Bartlett did not play a single game for Queensland in any format as he was coming off a back injury. But, at the MCG on Friday, he looked like he had been playing international cricket for years as he scythed through West Indies’ top order to claim 4 for 17, the second-best figures by an Australian man on ODI debut.Related

Bartlett four-for, Green's all-round effort give Australia 1-0 lead

“It almost feels like it’s not real,” Bartlett said after the match. He admitted he had no thought at the start of the summer, or even during the early part of the BBL, that he was even close to Australia selection.”Oh, definitely not,” Bartlett said. “We’ve got so many great fast bowlers at the moment. Obviously, [Mitchell] Starc, [Josh] Hazlewood and [Pat] Cummins are probably the top three to ever do it for Australia or in that conversation. And then I only really got my chance through Jhye Richardson’s injury and Nathan Ellis was injured as well.”There’s definitely a long list of people in front of me. But I’ve just got to keep trying to do my best for Queensland, and if I get an opportunity at the higher level, just try and take it and just sort of almost learn as much as I can as well along the way.”

“Not the quickest, but as we see you don’t need pace to be disruptive. He was very, very consistent”Shai Hope on Xavier Bartlett

Despite his BBL success, the thought had dawned on him that he had not played any 50-over cricket since September 2022, which added to his pre-game nerves.”Yeah it did,” Bartlett said. “I spoke to someone on the phone and I was like ‘I haven’t played a 50-over game in like 15 or 16 months’. Yeah, I mean … I don’t know. It just sort of happened so fast.”I was injured at the start of this year and didn’t have a chance to play any domestic cricket, which was a frustrating time. But you can kind of see the light at the end of the tunnel and you’ve just got to keep trying to work hard because these days don’t happen very often in the game of cricket.”Xavier Bartlett was one of Brisbane Heat’s stars in the latest BBL•Cricket Australia via Getty ImagesIt was serendipitous that Australia’s selector on duty, Tony Dodemaide, had been the one to tell Bartlett he would make his international debut. Dodemaide’s 5 for 21 against Sri Lanka in 1988 remains the best figures on ODI debut by an Australian, but Bartlett was happy to slot in behind him in second spot.”We were sitting in there watching the boys bat and it floated up on the screen,” Bartlett said. “Some of those names, to just be alongside them, it’s pretty cool. [Dodemaide] didn’t say anything. I just had a little picture with him just then.”West Indies captain Shai Hope was one of Bartlett’s four victims, having nicked a good length outswinger to first slip during the powerplay. He had watched footage of Bartlett in the lead-up but was very impressed by the real thing.”He’s shown that he’s got the ability to perform at this level,” Hope said after the match. “Not the quickest, but as we see you don’t need pace to be disruptive. He was very, very consistent. He bowled really well, especially for his first game. He looked like he belonged. We know as a West Indies group we have to find a way to not allow him to settle for the next game.”
