Lizelle Lee retired over fears of being dropped, denied NOC for overseas leagues because of poor fitness

Lizelle Lee has admitted that she did not meet CSA’s fitness requirements, and that is what led to her abrupt retirement from international cricket. In an interview with the BBC’s Stumped podcast, Lee revealed that after she failed to complete aspects of the fitness test, she was on the verge of being withdrawn from South Africa’s current tour of England, and the no-objection certificate to play in overseas leagues would have been denied. She chose to retire from the national side instead, which meant she would no longer need NOCs to play for T20 franchises. The issue came to a head when Lee was required to complete a fitness test before the squad left South Africa. She asked to do it in her parents’ hometown of Ermelo in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa instead of at her provincial base, North-West, or at CSA’s headquarters in Johannesburg because of the cost of travel. Lee weighed herself and sent the results to the team’s fitness trainer, who told her she had to also have her skinfold measured. Lee visited a biokineticist in Ermelo for that test later in the day, but did not weigh herself again because “it fluctuates and it’s small margins”, she said on the podcast. “I’m not going to do it again because if it’s over [the limit] I won’t be eligible for the England tour.” She told the biokineticist she had recorded her weight herself. She was subsequently selected for the tour and retested on arrival in England in early July, where, according to Lee, her “skinfolds were down but the weight wasn’t even close to where I thought it’d be”.CSA asked Lee for an explanation and established that Lee’s weight had not been verified by the biokineticist. In an email to CSA staff on July 5, Lee said she knew that she should have tested her weight again but didn’t, “because I was afraid that it might differ from the morning which might result in me not being selected” and conceded she “that was wrong and that I should have done it there”.The following day – July 6 – Lee was informed via email that she would be withdrawn from the squad. In communication between CSA and Lee, seen by ESPNcricinfo, CSA also said it would exercise its right to withhold an NOC for participation in leagues until she “met and maintained workload and fitness requirements”. CSA has since confirmed it was confident Lee could use the six to eight weeks away from the national squad in June and July ahead of The Hundred to meet the requirements if she returned home. They were also worried about her form and hoped she could work while at home on that too. Prior to the tour, Lee had played seven ODIs in 2022 and scored 81 runs at an average of 11.57, including five single-figure knocks.Related

Lee, however, was concerned that she would not get an NOC in time for The Hundred, which would have considerable financial implications, especially as she had just become a parent. “It was a lot of money,” she said. “We needed it. We’re a young family. So I just said I was going to retire.”Through CSA, she initially issued a statement saying she was ready to focus on the next phase of her career but, days later, tweeted that national coach Hilton Moreeng was aware of CSA’s intention to deny her the NOC. That was in response to Moreeng telling a press conference he had no knowledge of the Lee situation.Lee accused CSA of failing to offer her any resources to help her lose weight. “I never got any support from CSA with that,” she said. “They never asked me ‘what do you need, what can we do to help you lose weight’. That’s something that I have had to do on my own.” CSA has denied that assertion.Lee recognised that CSA was “in their rights to do that [withhold the NOC] and that’s 100% fine”, but criticised their fitness requirements. She said that bracketing an athlete’s ability to run along with their skin folds and weight is not a true measure of cricketing ability and would prefer that the cardiovascular and body composition components be separated.”I understand the running, if you don’t make the running, they don’t see you as fit enough to play which I think is probably fine,” she said. “The big thing that just got me is that I made fitness physically, I did the running that I had to do. Basically, I’m fit to play, and I had this conversation with them before Ireland because I got dropped in Ireland because of my weight as well, and I told them ‘you’re dropping me because of the way I look and how much I weigh’ and they said ‘no, we’re dropping you because you failed the fitness battery’.In seven ODIs this year, Lizelle Lee had scored 81 runs, with a best of 36•ICC via Getty Images

“I said ‘yes, but if you break the fitness battery down, what did I not make? I made the fitness, the running, but not the weight. So you’re dropping me because of weight’. So as a woman that breaks me.”Lee’s gender is the reason CSA did not make these details public, with several officials citing an understanding of the sensitivity of body-image issues facing women as a reason to keep the matter private. In early 2020, CSA held a conditioning camp for Tabraiz Shamsi, Lungi Ngidi, JJ Smuts and Sisanda Magala targeted at, among other things, their weight. At the end of the camp, all four players took fitness tests and Magala was the only one who did not pass. He was subsequently left out of an ODI squad to play England and his challenges have been well documented. Magala, despite being the leading wicket-taker in the domestic one-day cup in the 2021-22 season, will continue to be unavailable for national selection until he meets the fitness requirements.Lee asked for a complete relook at the process of fitness tests, especially for women. “We have to make sure, especially with women, the things that really count have to count more – like running and skills, all of those things that actually contribute towards winning instead of how people look.”

However, the Red Devils' offer is short of what the academy hero is demanding, reports, and he is instead considering a move abroad. Mainoo earns around £20,000 per week, the report says, but he is demanding the club take that up to £180,000 if they want him to extend his stay. United, though, are unlikely to meet that as they plan on reducing their wage bill.

£21m Toon ace, City starlet: 6 players who could join or leave Newcastle

Following a mixed start to the 2024/25 season, Eddie Howe now has Newcastle United playing well as they seek a return to the Champions League after missing out this term.

Howe will also be hoping to lead the Magpies to their first major trophy in over half a century. Signs are good, as the club recently secured a 2-0 win over Arsenal in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final tie.

Despite this good form of late, it is evident that reinforcements are needed if they are expected to maintain it, especially with a top-four finish in the Premier League table more than achievable this season.

Naturally, there have been plenty of rumours regarding arrivals and departures at the Toon, but which players could Howe bring into the club, and who will he be able to sell to fund such purchases?

Winter transfer window 2025: All the latest deals from England and Scotland

Find out who is on the move this winter with our comprehensive list of done deals from the Premier League, EFL and Scottish Premiership.

ByStephan Georgiou Feb 3, 2025 Potential Newcastle United incomings Vitor Roque (Barcelona)

According to CaughtOffside, Newcastle are closely monitoring the situation of Barcelona striker Vitor Roque, who has struggled to make much of an impact for the La Liga giants since his €40m (£33m) move from Brazilian side Athletic-PR in 2023.

The teenager scored just two goals for the club last term and is currently on loan at Real Betis, where he has netted six goals in 24 appearances for the club, which could aid a move out of Barcelona.

Alexander Isak is enjoying a wonderful campaign so far, but if he suffers an injury, Howe only has Callum Wilson as backup, which suggests a move for another striker is a potential priority this month.

Barcelona are now willing to sell Roque, with Newcastle one of the teams who are showing plenty of interest in making a deal happen.

Much will depend on the transfer fee, but if it is within Howe’s budget, he should consider tabling a bid for the Brazilian.

James McAtee (Manchester City)

Manchester City'sJamesMcAteecelebrates after the match

It isn’t just a centre-forward Newcastle are after, as Howe appears keen on bringing Manchester City starlet James McAtee to the club this month.

A loan deal has been mooted amid concerns that the Magpies might not spend too much in the transfer window, but a temporary deal could work wonders for all parties involved.

The attacking midfielder has played just ten times for City this term, scoring a single goal in the process, and it is clear that he needs more game time to fulfil his incredible potential.

Howe would surely be able to get more from McAtee than what Guardiola has done this season by giving him a regular platform to shine in the Premier League, making a loan move a no-brainer.

Jonathan David (Lille)

Jonathan David is a player who is admired by Newcastle, but a move this month might be out of the question. Howe may look to sign him on a pre-contract which would see the Canadian sign in the summer.

According to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, four Premier League clubs have made offers to sign David on a pre-contract deal, but it remains to be seen whether Newcastle are one of them.

The centre-forward has scored 101 goals and recorded 23 assists for the French side across 210 games. This works out at a goal involvement every 1.7 games – a strike rate Howe would love to have in his side.

Considering how many clubs are reportedly after the 24-year-old, the Magpies have plenty of competition. With the club having a chance to secure Champions League football next term, this could perhaps be a deciding factor in where David ends up following the 2024/25 campaign.

Jonathan David’s contract runs out in the summer, so could he be on the move soon? Several Premier League clubs have been linked with the Canadian.

ByBarney Lane Oct 17, 2024 Potential Newcastle United departures Miguel Almiron (Crystal Palace, Wolves & others)

Newcastle United's MiguelAlmironbefore the match

Miguel Almiron looks like he will leave Newcastle sooner rather than later, as the club have reportedly offered him to Premier League sides Crystal Palace, Wolves and Leicester City.

The Paraguay international was once a key player at St James’ Park, but it looks as though his future appears away from the north-east. The Magpies have placed a price tag of €20-25m (£17-21m) for the player, which could tempt a few clubs to make a move this month.

Charlotte FC, Santos, Botafogo, Sao Paulo and Palmeiras are also interested in the 30-year-old, and his sale could free up funds for future arrivals this winter.

Callum Wilson (contract expires this summer)

Callum Wilson

Callum Wilson looks set to leave Newcastle. The question is whether he will spend the next six months at the Toon before departing on a free transfer, or if Howe will look to offload him to secure a transfer fee this month.

Before Christmas, Football Insider claimed that Wilson would be departing Newcastle upon the expiration of his contract after an injury-plagued season that had seen him feature in just four league games, failing to score or assist.

If a club comes in with an offer this month, Howe will surely be keen on accepting to move him on.

Martin Dubravka (linked with Al-Shabab)

It already appears as though Martin Dubravka is destined to leave Newcastle, with Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab closing in on bringing the goalkeeper to the Middle East.

The transfer has been approved by the Saudi Pro League’s Financial Sustainability Committee, although it still needs to be approved by Newcastle. Howe will be eyeing up a replacement for the Slovakian, who has been the first-choice goalkeeper at the club in recent times amid Nick Pope’s injury issues.

The 35-year-old has made 171 appearances for the Magpies since joining in 2017. With his contract expiring this summer, getting a fee for him in January makes plenty of sense.

Howe will be looking to replace the veteran ‘keeper, especially if he needs cover for Pope in the future. Whether he finds someone this month or in the summer remains unclear.

Crystal Palace now battling Southampton to sign "fantastic" La Liga gem

At the halfway stage with the January transfer window now underway, Crystal Palace have now reportedly set their sights on beating Southampton to the arrival of a La Liga gem this month.

Crystal Palace transfer news

The Eagles had plenty to be concerned about in the opening stages of the season but have since weathered the storm to set the course for survival once again under Oliver Glasner. Still just five points clear of the dropzone, however, their job is far from complete and they’ll be well aware of how important the January transfer window can be to pick up where they left off in a recent 2-1 victory over relegation rivals Southampton.

Of course, keeping hold of players will also be key, with the likes of Marc Guehi linked to Newcastle United in the summer and his name likely to at least be mentioned again this month. But the flip side of the coin is that Palace could also use this month to welcome key reinforcements for Glasner and his side.

Tino Livramento battles with Marc Guehi

According to reports in Spain, Crystal Palace are now battling Southampton to sign Sergi Altimira from Real Betis, but will need to pay an excessive fee to lure the La Liga side into a January sale.

Having defeated the Saints on the pitch, those at Selhurst Park seemingly want to deal them another blow away from the action and the fact it’s for Altimira should come as little shock.

The 23-year-old Spanish midfielder has enjoyed a solid campaign at the heart of Betis’ midfield, helping his side to within touching distance of the European places and starting 12 of their 18 La Liga games so far this season. If Palace want to reinforce their midfield then he could be the man to partner Will Hughes.

"Fantastic" Altimira could partner Hughes

Whilst Hughes has seemingly nailed down a starting role under Glasner, especially amid Adam Wharton’s injury absence, Palace could yet welcome an ideal partner for the former Derby County youngster. And that’s where Altimira could come in. Two midfield controllers, Glasner would suddenly have the balance that he needs in the middle of the park to get back to last season’s form and push further onward away from the dropzone.

Dubbed “fantastic” by Spanish reporter Mateo Gonzalez earlier this season, Altimira’s best years are yet to come at just 23 years old. So to step into the Premier League at this stage would be quite the move.

That said, the numbers suggest that he’d have no trouble fitting into English football, given that he has almost mirrored Hughes’ performance in a number of areas throughout the current campaign. The prospect of a midfield partnership between those two should be enough to push Palace towards Altimira’s signature this month.

Sheffield Wednesday now increase offer to sign "brilliant" £6k-p/w maestro

Sheffield Wednesday have now submitted an increased offer to sign a “brilliant” midfielder, moving into pole position for his signature, according to reporter Alan Nixon.

Wednesday faring well in the Championship

After flirting with relegation and finishing just three points above the relegation places in the previous campaign, Wednesday have really kicked on in the Championship this season, sitting in 11th place, just four points adrift of the play-offs.

As such, a push for the top six is not out of the question in the second half of the season, and manager Danny Rohl is now running the rule over players to improve his squad.

The Owls are in the race to sign Aston Villa forward Louie Barry, who is attracting the attention of a whole host of second-tier clubs this month, while earlier in the month they made contact over Rangers’ Rabbi Matondo, who now looks set to join Coventry City.

ByKelan Sarson Jan 22, 2025

It has been a relatively quiet month for Wednesday, with one of the only major developments coming in the form of Shea Charles being recalled by parent club Southampton.

Since then, rumours the midfielder could cross the Sheffield divide have emerged, with United boss Chris Wilder confirming the Blades’ interest is very real.

However, a promising update has now been dropped by reliable reporter Alan Nixon (via Football League World), who states Sheffield Wednesday have submitted a new and improved loan offer for Charles.

The Saints are willing to sanction the 21-year-old’s departure on loan if they receive a significant offer, and the Owls’ latest proposal is believed to be worth more than the Blades’.

As such, a return to Hillsborough is the more likely scenario as things stand, with Wednesday moving ahead of their rivals in the race for the youngster’s signature.

Shea Charles is needed back at Hillsborough

The Northern Ireland international has emerged as a vital player for the Owls this season, picking up one goal and four assists in 25 Championship outings, so it will be a real boost if Rohl is able to bring him back to Hillsborough this month.

The £6k-per-week Southampton ace could be poised to go on and achieve great things, having also received high praise for his performances at international level, being lauded as “brilliant” by members of the media.

The idea of Charles going to Bramall Lane to aid the Blades’ promotion push doesn’t bare thinking about, so it is promising news that Wednesday are better-placed to get a deal done this month.

He’s as good as Isak: Newcastle pushing to sign mega-money "powerhouse"

Newcastle United’s air of imperiousness dissipated last weekend, with Bournemouth running riot at St. James’ Park and emerging as 4-1 victors.

Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up. Anyway, the Magpies had sailed through the festive period and boasted a nine-match winning streak before the Cherries came to town.

It’s all relative. Newcastle have bounded into the top four and also dismantled Arsenal at the Emirates to take a commanding two-goal lead back to Tyneside in the Carabao Cup semi-final.

Alexander Isak was nullified by Andoni Iraola’s defence, but it was bound to happen at some point. He’s been utterly breathtaking over the past few months.

The importance of Alexander Isak at Newcastle

When Newcastle paid a club record fee of £63m to bag Isak’s signature, there was a general sense of awe in Tyneside. It was a significant sum, yes, but Isak had the capacity to become one of the finest marksmen in the business.

Newcastle forward Alexander Isak

He might have suffered injury problems across his English career, but Isak has simply got better and better under Howe’s wing and is now regarded as “the best striker in the Premier League” – by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher, at least.

Experience over the past few years has fostered in the United fanbase a sense of belonging, a sense of determination among top Premier League and European outfits. The start of the 2024/25 campaign did not reflect the overarching vision, to be sure, but Isak has stepped up over the past few months and scored at an absurd rate.

He’s reminded everyone that he’s one of the deadliest, silkiest and most stylish forwards in the game, endowed with ferocious striking skills but also link-up play and intelligence beyond merely the realm of the goalscorer.

It’s only natural that Europe’s elite outfits should be lining up to secure the Swede’s prized signature, with Arsenal in particular known to have a vested interest.

Newcastle will hope that they can tie Isak down to a bumper new deal at St. James’ Park, but if they fail, sporting director Paul Mitchell is already doing the groundwork to sign a successor.

Newcastle lining up Isak heir

Eddie Howe has assembled one of the Premier League’s standout squads over the past three years, shaping a middling team into one of potential at the summit of the European and domestic game.

Isak’s sale is not something that the Toon want to consider, but if it did occur this year or next, figures as high as £150m have been floated about.

Alexander Isak celebrates for Newcastle

As such, Newcastle would have the means to go after a first-class replacement, and Viktor Gyokeres is the man at the top of the shopping list.

As per Football Transfers, United have actually held fresh talks for the free-scoring Sporting Lisbon striker as they continue to sweat over Isak’s future.

Gyokeres, Isak’s teammate with Sweden, has a €100m (about £85m) release clause in his contract but it’s understood that the defending Liga Portugal champions would be willing to negotiate a lower fee at the end of the season.

What Viktor Gyokeres would bring to Newcastle

Callum Wilson is out of contract at the end of the season, but Gyokeres would not agree to a date with Tyneside to play second fiddle to Isak.

And indeed, why would he? The 26-year-old has been in devastating form since joining Sporting Lisbon in 2023, leaving Coventry City for £17m.

Last year, Reporter Harry de Cosemo called him “one of the most feared forwards in Europe” and it’s clear to see why, with the sharpshooter’s pace, power and potency in front of goal all coming together to put him in some rather lofty conversations.

Sporting won the Portuguese top flight last season and Gyokeres was crucial, posting 43 goals and 15 assists across 50 matches in all competitions. When comparing his Liga Portugal stats to Isak’s (in the Premier League) this season, it’s very easy to see why he is held in such high regard and why Howe wants him leading the line, should Isak depart.

Of course, you’d think that Isak would succeed in raising his level if plying his art in Portugal, an ostensibly inferior league in terms of overall quality, but it still points toward an exciting future for Gyokeres, should he move to Newcastle.

Not just a clinical striker, he’s creative, combative and mobile, bearing all the traits that would be needed to slot right into a dynamic and energetic Newcastle side.

Moreover, he’s proved that he can do it on the biggest stage and against the biggest opponents, notching an incredible hat-trick in November as Ruben Amorim’s ex-side defeated Manchester City in the Champions League.

Hailed as a “powerhouse” of a number nine by data analyst Ben Mattinson, Gyokeres has everything going for him, and while Newcastle would no doubt have to tussle with some big names to sign him up, he might be tempted by his countryman’s success in Howe’s system and look to emulate him.

Kane Richardson, Tom Helm douse Fire's chase as Phoenix rise from the flames

Birmingham defend 13 from last 10 balls to hand Welsh Fire third consecutive loss

ECB Reporters Network13-Aug-2022

Tom Helm clinched a narrow win for Phoenix at the death•ECB/Getty Images

Brilliant bowling at the death by Kane Richardson and Tom Helm with Welsh Fire needing 13 to win off 10 balls allowed Birmingham Phoenix to snatch a four-run victory from the jaws of defeat at Sophia Gardens.Having only reached 130 in their 100 balls it seemed set up for Fire to notch their first win of the summer in front of a 10,901 crowd. David Miller, with 35 off 30, almost got the Welsh team over the line, but the final push wasn’t good enough.Phoenix now have two wins from three games and look set to challenge to go one better than last year. Aussie quick Richardson was named as the Hero of the Match as he took 2 for 15 in his 20 balls, including 11 dot balls.Fire skipper Josh Cobb was delighted to have won the toss and put the Phoenix into bat. Three days earlier, last season’s runners-up had notched 176 in a revenge win over the reigning champions Southern Brave, with 20-year-old opener Will Smeed hitting the Hundred’s first century.Thoughts of a repeat may have been on his mind, but David Payne had other ideas and sent him back after a mere four balls without scoring. The home pace attack kept a tight rein on the Phoenix batters and they limped to 50 off 50 balls, having lost four wickets.Moeen Ali and Chirs Benjamin steadied the ship with a stand of 22 for the second wicket before two wickets fell in a superb set of five from George Scrimshaw. Moeen was caught behind after striking a boundary and three balls later Liam Livingstone gave his much-prized wicket away trying to ramp the home paceman. That made it 27 for 3 at the end of the powerplay, Phoenix’s lowest in the format.Cobb then threw himself into the attack and managed to tighten the noose. Chris Benjamin was caught on the boundary by Dwaine Pretorius, although claimed the maximum as the South African fell over the boundary, but Cobb bowled him next ball.Phoenix were 37 for 4 after 40 and in need of a partnership. It came from Aussie star Matthew Wade and Miles Hammond, who put on 52 for the fifth wicket. Wade hit Scrimshaw, Pretorius and Adam Zampa for sixes, but then fell to Zampa as he went for a repeat. He scored 38 as the Phoenix slumped to 94 for 6 with 22 balls to go.They reached 130 for 7 in the end, Helm pulling the last ball for what was to prove an invaluable six.Fire, having lost their opening two games, desperately needed to hold their nerve in a moderate run chase. Their two totals this season in those defeats were only 119 and 107.Phoenix didn’t concede a run in the first set of five balls from Richardson and he also removed Joe Clarke. Sam Hain wasn’t going to hang around, ramping a six to get off the mark. He eventually chopped on to a slower ball from Helm having scored 23 off 15 balls to leave Fire 28 for 2.Tom Banton finished off the powerplay with a four and a six to take the home side to 34, but when Ben Duckett was bowled by Ben Howell, Fire were 53 for 3. They reached the 50-ball mark with 59, nine runs ahead of the Phoenix total, and it was anyone’s game.Banton and Miller put on 32 for the fourth wicket, including 11 runs from Imran Tahir’s only set of five. Successive sixes – 90 and then 96 metres – from Miller off Livingstone put Fire back in the driving seat, but Richardson conceded just two from the penultimate set and Helm defended 11 from the last to leave home supporters crestfallen.

Kohli 'made a conscious effort to strike at a higher pace' but rush of wickets forced slowdown

Having rediscovered his mojo in the Asia Cup with back-to-back fifties, Kohli says “what happens in the change room is the only thing that matters”

Shashank Kishore05-Sep-20222:56

Uthappa: Kohli looked ominous from the first boundary he hit

Virat Kohli let his magical wrists take over, and a 150kph delivery from Mohammad Hasnain went sailing over deep midwicket. It was his half-century – his second in a row – off 36 balls, in the 18th over, and the Indian dressing room was on its feet.Only a week ago, in his 100th T20I, also against Pakistan, Kohli had been scratchy. A thick edge was dropped in the slips second ball he faced, inside-edges rolled past the stumps, lofted hits landed in no-man’s land, top edges flew to the boundary, and attempted drives ended up only being sliced. But this Sunday was different. The fluency was there, and the timing from the get-go was all there.Related

The second delivery he faced, a short one from Shadab Khan in the seventh over of the innings, Kohli picked the length early and rocked back to hammer a pull between wide long-one and deep midwicket. In the 11th, he swivelled – head right over the ball, wrists on top of the bounce – to wallop Hasnain to the square-leg boundary. Naseem Shah wasn’t spared either. His first delivery to Kohli was slapped to the cover-point boundary after the batter made room by moving to leg and going down the pitch.Kohli was in his element. The fall of wickets wasn’t going to alter his tempo, especially since he had come to grips with the surface early. Prior to the match, head coach Rahul Dravid had touched upon the importance of assessing conditions quickly and aiming for above-par scores. It was clear this surface didn’t grip as much and with one boundary at just 62 metres, India had to give themselves the cushion of a big score. But from being ultra-aggressive, Kohli had to slow down in the second half of his innings because of the rush of wickets, which he later said was the difference between getting to 200 and stopping at 181. But he did give a peek into the team’s mindset when he said the loss of wickets in the middle overs in pushing for “20-25 extra” wasn’t a worry, because when it does come off, it will make a difference.”If you’ve seen the way we’ve been playing, it’s given us the results we need, and in our middle overs, the run rate has also improved,” Kohli said of India’s approach. “It’s something I, as a batsman, really took keen notice of, and I knew that is one area we need to keep improving on. We’ve spoken about this that sometimes it won’t come off, the way you want and today, we lost a few wickets in the middle phase which didn’t allow us to go towards the 200 target.”Because after [Deepak] Hooda and me, it was Bhuvi [Bhuvneshwar Kumar], so the bowlers were to follow. That makes a bit of a difference, but we do possess the skills to analyse the situation and play accordingly as well. But given the situation, if we had a couple of wickets in hand, we could’ve got more runs. We’re not disturbed by losing wickets through the middle overs, because that’s the way we want to play. We want to be able to get those 20-25 extra runs that can eventually make the difference in big games.”Kohli explained that much of his slowdown in the second half was dictated by the batting firepower left. He was forced to delay the big hits, since India were also faced with the danger of running out of recognised batters in the death overs.”Today I was making a conscious effort to strike at a higher pace,” he said. “When we lost wickets, there was communication and our plans changed, where I had to bat till the 18th with Hooda. If there were a couple of batters, I would’ve gone with the same tempo and tried to hit more boundaries or sixes. But again, I ended up being in a situation where I had to go deep.”I thought Haris Rauf bowled a great last over. He nailed those slower balls and yorkers, with that pace when you execute, it’s always difficult to get it away. I’m going to continue – especially batting first – to bat the [same] way, trying to take the game on and stay ahead of the asking rate, understanding the conditions and just bat freely. As long as I am in a good space and confident of my batting, I know I can bat in many ways. It’s just about getting back into the groove and getting confident with how you’re playing and once that happens then the situation dictates how you need to play.”4:13

Kohli on answering his critics: I’ve never paid attention to these things

Having made two half-centuries in a row and a 35 earlier, Kohli is now the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament so far – 154 runs in three innings at a strike rate of 126.22 – behind Mohammad Rizwan. It was inevitable that he’d be asked about his form and silencing critics. Kohli underlined the importance of finding excitement and joy in batting as a big factor.”I’ve never paid attention to these things [external criticism], to be honest,” he said. “I’ve played for 14 years; it doesn’t happen by chance. My job is to work hard on my game, something I’m always keen to do. Keen to improve my game for the team. That’s something I’m going to continue to do so.”Everyone’s doing their job eventually. Our job is to play the game, work hard, give our 120%, and I’ve said it in the past that as long as I am doing that and the team has faith in that, what happens in the change room is the only thing that matters to us and to me as well personally.”People have their opinions and that’s absolutely fine, that doesn’t change my happiness as a person. I’ve taken some time away, put things into perspective, it’s given me the relaxation that this isn’t the be-all-and-end-all of life, I need to enjoy the game. I can’t put myself under so much pressure of expectation that I’m not able to express myself. That is not why I started playing this game. I was able to find that excitement back, when I came here, the environment was very welcoming. The camaraderie with the boys is amazing. The environment within the team is amazing, so I’m absolutely loving playing at the moment all over again and feeling good the way I’m batting.”

Nottingham Forest make first move to sign "decisive" £132k-p/w ace for Nuno

Looking to cement their Champions League place once and for all, Nottingham Forest have now reportedly made contact to sign a Serie A midfielder who knows all about finishing inside the Premier League’s top four.

Nottingham Forest transfer news

Six wins on the bounce and level on points with second place Arsenal in the Premier League, Nottingham Forest are proving to be no flash in the pan as the season enters its second half. It’s even worth noting that up next they have the chance to become the first side to complete the double over Arne Slot’s Liverpool side and remain the only side to defeat the Reds in league action so far this season.

Defeat Slot’s side once again and Nuno Espirito Santo’s high-flying Forest will find themselves just three points adrift with the leaders, who will at least have a game in hand to rectify that gap. If the likes of Chris Wood perform at the level they did against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the coming weeks, then the title race may well have a shock participant.

The January transfer window could yet boost their impressive campaign even further too. According to The Daily Mail, Nottingham Forest have made contact to sign Douglas Luiz from Juventus this month in what is likely to be a short-term loan move away from the Serie A giants.

Having struggled since arriving in Turin, Luiz could now receive the opportunity he so desperately needs to return to the Premier League and rediscover his best form. A move to Nottingham Forest wouldn’t be without its controversy, however, given that the Brazilian spent a number of years at Aston Villa and even helped the Villans into the Champions League last season.

"Decisive" Luiz would cement Nottingham Forest's ambitions

Just like he did for Midlands rivals Aston Villa last season, Luiz could seal Forest’s Champions League ambitions by completing a January move and much-needed fresh start away from Juventus – albeit merely a brief loan spell.

Earning a reported £132,000-a-week in Serie A, it will be interesting to see just how much of Luiz’s hefty salary Nottingham Forest are willing to match and how much Juventus will pay, themselves, in order to send their midfielder on loan.

The former Villa man is certainly worth the gamble this month, having still earned plenty of praise throughout a troubled campaign so far. Among those with plenty of positives has been Aston Villa sporting director Monchi, who told reporters as relayed by Tribal Football earlier this month: “He’s playing less than we all expected, but we’re talking about a strong player.

“There are guys who arrive and impose themselves, others who need time. Patience is needed, but Douglas’ qualities are beyond discussion. He will become important for Juve. He’s a playmaker and every ball that comes out of his feet has a meaning: last year he played 90% of the games with us. He was decisive.”
