Bharat Arun, Wriddhiman Saha, Abhimanyu Easwaran rejoin India squad after isolation

Bowling coach Bharat Arun, wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, and reserve batter Abhimanyu Easwaran rejoined the Indian squad in Durham on Saturday – and even took part in a training session – after completing a ten-day quarantine in accordance with the UK’s Covid-19 protocols. The trio had to isolate in London while the rest of the squad and support staff travelled to Durham, after being identified asclose contacts of training assistant/net bowler Dayanand Garani, who tested positive for Covid-19 on July 14. Garani has not yet rejoined the team. Rishabh Pant, who had also tested positive for Covid-19, has also linked up with the squad, on July 22, after recovering. All three players – Pant, Saha and Easwaran – are now available for selection, having missed India’s three-day warm-up match against a County Select XI.With Pant and Saha both absent for the three-day game, KL Rahul kept wickets for the Indians, as the matchended in a draw.Rahul made 101 (retired) in the first innings, top-scoring for the Indians. Ravindra Jadeja also scored twin half-centuries, 75 and 51 (retired), while Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Siraj were among the wickets in the first innings of the local side.

Ashwell Prince on being a player of colour in the South Africa team: 'It was a lonely place'

“A person knows when they are welcome, and you know when you are unwelcome”

Firdose Moonda02-Aug-2021A lack of will to engage with South Africa’s segregated past has resulted in continued devaluing of the experiences of players of colour, according to Ashwell Prince. Speaking at Cricket South Africa’s Social Justice and Nation-Building Hearings, Prince said he felt unwelcome throughout his nine years in the national team, was labelled a “quota player” by his team-mates on several occasions, and experienced racism in the dressing room. He is not convinced the issues have been resolved to this day.Prince last played for South Africa in 2011 and detailed how the national team had an opportunity in that year to discuss their diverse backgrounds but rejected it, something that he feels has repercussions on the team dynamic today. “In 2011, we had a culture camp and they wanted some topics for us to discuss. They wanted us to be open and honest because we were going to be a team, so we needed to be open and honest with each other,” Prince said.Related

Khaya Zondo reveals anguish at being left out of South Africa ODI side in 2015

“One player suggested: ‘can we talk about the history of our country? Things like Apartheid, the Group Areas Act (a piece of legislation which stipulated where people from different race groups could live), and forced removals? Can we try and dig into how these things affected our lives and try and establish what impact it had on our parents and on ourselves? This was what one of the non-white players wanted to talk about and it was shut down immediately. The answer was, ‘No, we can’t talk about that. We don’t think that should be discussed in this environment.’ So we didn’t have a discussion. Now, today people don’t want to take a knee. Maybe had we discussed this in 2011, and people had realised the suffering non-white people had in this country, it would be much easier to take the knee. But no, we don’t want to talk about that.”While that incident came towards the end of Prince’s career – he went on to be dropped via email after the Boxing Day Test against Sri Lanka – he narrated a series of stories from his debut in 2002, which made him feel othered. Prince said he was labelled a “quota player” by the media when he was picked to play against Australia, after scoring 92 for the South Africa A team to push his claim for a place. Once in the squad, he felt immediately isolated.”There was no welcome from the coach. There was no (sense of) let’s make this guy comfortable,” Prince said. “It was a lonely place. A person knows when they are welcome, and you know when you are unwelcome. You can get a sense of whether people want you here or don’t want you here. It would have been nice for people to back you. You saw it happening to other guys your age, your peers. You saw it happening to a new player if he was white but it wasn’t happening if the player wasn’t white.”Despite that, Prince “was on a mission” to prove that “from my background, people were good enough.” Having not been to an elite school and with his formative years in the non-racial South African Council on Sport (SACOS) structures, Prince said he “regarded my career as a war. I would lose small battles in the war but I was going to be there for the duration.”

“Maybe had we discussed this in 2011, and people had realised the suffering non-white people had in this country, it would be much easier to take the knee. But no, we don’t want to talk about that.”Ashwell Prince

However, Prince quickly saw he was in for an almighty fight, not just against perception, but against the people in his own change room. “In the 2006-07 season, we were playing a day-night match in Durban and a fight broke out on the grass banks. Most of the people were Indians,” he said. “Some of the comments in the dressing room astounded me. There were remarks made like, “Typical f****** charous (a derogatory word for South Africans of Indian heritage), can’t behave themselves, drinking cheap liquor and can’t behave.” My wife is Indian. We had one of the greatest managers, who we all respected, in Goolam Rajah, who was Indian. For people to use that terminology in the dressing room and think it was okay astounded me.”A few days later, in a team meeting, Prince took on his team-mates. “I was by no means an established player but I said I had something to say and I said: ‘This is the national team, surely we can’t use this language?’ Everyone was taken aback,” he said. His ODI career did not last much beyond that. He was axed after the 2007 World Cup, where South Africa lost in the semi-finals to Australia, and returned home to infighting that Prince said took on racial tones. “When we returned home, CSA decided to have an inquiry as to what happened,” he said. “We were in a hotel: the players, team management and senior officials from CSA and some younger players. Some questions were asked (about what went wrong) and there was silence in the room. After that one of the players broke out and said: “The problem we have is the quota system.” And one or two others gained confidence and latched on to that so it became that that was the problem in our cricket: the non-white players are the problem. People were talking and five or six players said the same thing.”I had reached a point where I didn’t care if I didn’t play another game, I was going to have my say. I said that we were blown away by a superior team in the semi-finals. If people just said that, we could have left that room and no dramas. Instead, people fell out badly. I said: ‘Guys if I wasn’t supposed to play, then tell me. Look me in the face and say I was not supposed to play. Don’t say the quota system is the problem.’ Nobody was brave enough to say who shouldn’t be there. When things went wrong it was the quota players’ fault. When things went right, the others were the heroes. As long as I played for the national team, that was not a team. We were never one.”Prince and the other players of colour in the squad were so offended by the suggestion that they were responsible for South Africa’s underperformance, “we said if you think the team lost because of quotas, maybe we should scrap the quota system,” he said. “We were firm believers that we deserved to be in the team.”Prince described his county stint with Lancashire as more enjoyable than his time with the national team•PA PhotosTheir assertion was leaked in the national newspaper, which led to Prince resigning as the South African Cricketers’ Association president. “I feel betrayed,” he said. “You were supposed to be living your dream but it was anything but a dream, It was an absolute nightmare. I played cricket by giving every inch for my teammates and I didn’t feel that was happening the other way around.”Though Prince did not play ODI cricket after, he remained part of the Test team until he broke his thumb in Australia and was replaced by JP Duminy. Despite the policy that a recovered incumbent would get their place back, Duminy’s stand-out performances in the 2008-09 series and the team balance at the time meant Prince did not find a way back until he opened the batting in the return series against Australia at home in March 2009, and not everyone was happy to have him back.”There was a franchise match before the third Test match and I was opening the batting. We had four or five Titans come in and try to intimidate me and having lots of words at the end of every over. It soon broke out to three players in particular who had words to say and they called me a quota player,” Prince said. “I told one of them I am really glad we are having this fight today. As players of colour this is what we always assumed you guys think of us. This is what we always assumed you would talk about. Now that we are on opposite teams and it’s kicking off in the middle, I am happy I know who sits next to me in the national team. Now we know where we stand.”Prince went on to score 150, opening the batting, in his comeback Test. “I raised my bat to my parents, then to my wife on the other side of the stadium and then lastly and reluctantly, I raised my bat to my team-mates,” he said. “If I had a choice, I wouldn’t have raised my bat to them. We weren’t a team.”He went on to enjoy a successful county career with Lancashire, which he described as more enjoyable than playing for the national team, and to coach the Cobras. Prince still believes there are problems with the way CSA approaches transformation, specifically by having different targets for black African players and other players of colour, and appealed to the administrators to “think of better ways to select cricket teams.”The SJN hearings have been extended to August 6, and could go on beyond that, before the ombudsman, Advocate Dumisa Ntsebeza, compiles a report for CSA.

Liverpool spotted scouting "fantastic" Robertson heir in the last 24 hours

As the Champions League returned this week, Liverpool scouts were reportedly in attendance at one particular game to watch a player who could one day replace Andy Robertson at Anfield.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds were back to their rampant best against AC Milan, bouncing back from their Nottingham Forest defeat in style by brushing the Italian giants to one side in a 3-1 victory. Swiftly getting back on track under Arne Slot, they’ve continued an excellent start under the Dutchman.

ByTom Cunningham Sep 18, 2024

The more time that he has in charge, the more that a transfer plan will begin to form for 2025. Of course, Slot’s first window in charge was a relatively quiet one, with just Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa arriving, but rumours have already started ahead of both January and next summer.

The likes of Angel Gomes have reportedly attracted the interest of those at Anfield in what would be a controversial move by the Manchester United academy graduate now starring at Lille. His arrival would certainly match reports that the Reds want to sign both a defensive midfielder and a left-back next year, with a solution for the latter problem now emerging.

According to Caught Offside, Liverpool sent scouts to watch Miguel Gutierrez in Girona’s late 1-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday night. The La Liga side were unfortunate to have not escaped with a point, but suffered the full reality of playing among Europe’s elite. Even with that defeat, however, Liverpool may have seen enough from Gutierrez to make their move.

The left-back is reportedly open to a Premier League switch and Slot is supposedly a fan of his talents, which makes the January transfer window one to watch. With Aston Villa also reportedly interested though, the Reds will have to act swiftly if they want to land an heir to Robertson’s left-back role.

"Fantastic" Gutierrez could replace Robertson

There’s no doubt that Robertson has his place in the Liverpool history books. The Scot will go down as one of the best left-backs that Anfield has ever seen and if that seems an exaggeration, then his Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup medals, among others, alongside his eye for an assist as the ultimate modern full-back, should more than justify his place in the spotlight.

All good things must come to an end, however, and as Robertson approaches 31 years old, Liverpool would be wise to start thinking about replacements and Gutierrez, in particular. At his best last season, the former Real Madrid man helped Girona to shock Champions League qualification in La Liga and was dubbed “fantastic” by Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig as a result.

At 23 years old, Gutierrez is the future. But whether that future involves a move to Anfield, remains to be seen.

Ready to leave: Arsenal give green light for "popular" £17m ace to depart

Over three months away from the January transfer window, Arsenal chiefs have reportedly already given the green light for one player to seal his exit away from North London.

Arsenal transfer news

The Gunners were a difficult side to judge in the summer transfer window. They were in no position to panic after two unsuccessful title charges in a row, with Mikel Arteta’s project beginning to impress more and more, but it wouldn’t be absurd to suggest that they needed an out-and-out goalscorer.

Paul Merson says Arteta has a real problem over £110k-per-week Arsenal star

The Gunners legend has had his say on an all-important clash at Arsenal.

ByEmilio Galantini Sep 22, 2024

Their occasional blunt nature going forward without a real killer in front of goal has been Arsenal’s one point of weakness, yet even after the summer, they remain without a boost in that department.

Instead, those in North London strengthened elsewhere with Riccardo Calafiori surely now completing Arteta’s defensive options and Mikel Merino arriving to provide backup for Declan Rice in midfield, before Raheem Sterling joined on loan in a shock move from Chelsea.

As things stand, it’s been business as usual after those arrivals too. Arteta’s side once again look like Manchester City’s closest challengers in an attempt to stop the Citizens from winning a stunning fifth Premier League title on the bounce. When January arrives, however, they may need to complete that task without one want-away player.

According to CalcioMercato via Sport Witness, Arsenal chiefs have now given the green light for Takehiro Tomiyasu to depart in the January transfer window, with Juventus reportedly preparing an approach. Ready to leave The Emirates after three years at the club, Tomiyasu will be granted his exit if the likes of Juventus match his reported €20m (£17m) valuation set by the Gunners.

An exit certainly makes sense following the arrival of Calafiori and the return of Jurrien Timber, but that will not take away from the solid job that the defender completed during his time at the club.

Right time for "popular" Tomiyasu to leave Arsenal

Tomiyasu’s potential January exit is one that could suit all parties. Arsenal are no longer in desperate need of the full-back’s services, whilst he seems ready for a new challenge and well aware of his place in the pecking order. With recent injury woes too, the Japan international is far from guaranteed a place in Arteta’s side when he does return to full fitness, such is the depth of competition at The Emirates.

Although he’s likely bidding farewell to the 25-year-old in either January or next summer, Arteta has been full of praise for Tomiyasu throughout his time at Arsenal, previously telling the club’s official website: “I love him. Everybody loves him. He’s one of the most popular in the dressing room. You can see the reaction of his team-mates towards him.

“They wanted him there at the front, enjoying it. He’s always very reserved and always doing things for the rest of the boys. He’s a fantastic player for the team.”

All good things must come to an end, however, and 2025 represents the perfect time for Tomiyasu to swap North London for elsewhere around European football.

Newcastle struck gold selling star who's worth more than Isak in 2024 money

Newcastle United have enjoyed a solid start to the 2024/25 campaign, going undefeated over their opening four matches.

Two wins and a draw in the Premier League has the club currently sitting in fifth place on seven points, while Eddie Howe also saw his side prevail over Nottingham Forest in a penalty shootout to reach the next round of the EFL Cup.

This start comes amid arguably one of the most disappointing transfer windows in recent times for the Magpies, as they failed to sign any marquee names to bolster their squad.

Perhaps the main thing was keeping hold of those key players who could spur the club back into the top four of the Premier League, securing qualification back to the Champions League in the process.

The likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordan and Joelinton will all have vital parts to play under Howe, while Alexander Isak is the main man in front of goal.

The Swede has been a wonderful signing for the Magpies. Can he take things up a notch this season?

Alexander Isak’s Newcastle record

After scoring 44 goals for Real Sociedad during a productive spell in Spain, Newcastle splashed out a club-record fee of £63m to bring him to the club in the summer of 2022.

It was clear Howe was attempting to build a team which could threaten the Premier League elite, and they went on to finish that season in fourth place.

Alexander Isak scores for Newcastle

Isak was impressive when he featured for the Magpies, scoring ten goals in 27 appearances that term, but it was last season in which he really delivered on his potential.

If his debut campaign was about him finding his feet at Newcastle, then last year saw the 24-year-old really come into his own.

Not only did the centre-forward find the back of the net 24 times in all competitions for the club, but he also helped himself to two assists.

Additionally, Isak also created five big chances, averaged 0.9 key passes per game while succeeding with 1.4 dribbles each match – a success rate of 60% – in the Premier League last term.

The Swede did manage to miss 21 big chances, however, which means if he was more clinical in the opposition penalty area, then the former Borussia Dortmund man could have scored over 30 league goals for the club.

Regardless, it was still an excellent season on a personal level for him and Isak will be hoping for more of the same throughout 2024/25.

His performances have seen his market value grow, as at the time of writing, Isak is currently worth €75m (£63.3m), as per Transfermarkt, and this will only continue to rise should he maintain his recent form.

Indeed, Isak is the second-highest valued player in the entire Newcastle first-team squad, yet more evidence of his importance to Howe.

The club did sell someone a few years ago now, however, who would have been worth twice the valuation of the Swede in 2024 money – Andy Carroll.

Andy Carroll’s Newcastle statistics

The Englishman began his career with the Magpies, making his debut during the 2006/07 campaign, but it wasn’t until two years later that he scored his first goal for the senior side.

Despite Newcastle suffering relegation during 2008/09, Carroll notched three Premier League goals in 14 games, indicating that he had the potential to lead their charge to secure promotion from the Championship in 2009/10.

Andy Carroll

Indeed, the youngster helped the Magpies make a swift return to the top flight with 17 goals in 39 games, adding another 12 assists, emerging as one of the finest young strikers the club had produced in years.

Returning to the Premier League with experience certainly aided Carroll, who helped himself to 11 goals during the first half of the season, as Alan Pardew not only aimed to keep the side up, but to crack the top half of the table.

It was clear that one day, Carroll would be making the move elsewhere, especially displaying this kind of form, yet I doubt even Pardew expected him to leave that season.

Towards the end of the January transfer window in 2011, Liverpool came calling and made an offer the club couldn’t refuse…

How much Newcastle sold Andy Carroll for

The Anfield side had already secured the signature of Ajax striker Luis Suárez for a fee in the region of £22.7m having lost Fernando Torres to Chelsea.

The Reds weren’t finished there, however, as a bid of £35m was submitted to Newcastle in order to bring Carroll to Merseyside, which was a then British-record transfer fee that sent shockwaves around the country.

There was no way Pardew could have rejected the offer, especially considering the profit Newcastle were going to make on the striker.

Adjusting for inflation, this fee in 2024 would see Carroll valued higher than some of the best players in the world right now.

How much Andy Carroll would be worth in 2024

In 2024, money, however – with Totally Money having adjusted for inflation over the years – this £35m transfer fee would be worth a staggering £101m if he made the same move today.

This is just over £40m more than what Isak is currently valued at and shows just how much Liverpool paid to bring him to the club 13 years ago.

There is no doubt that they overpaid, as the Englishman scored just 11 goals for the Reds during his brief spell there.

Newcastle hit the jackpot by moving him on for such a high fee, however, paving the way for Pardew to use the money wisely that summer in order to strengthen his first team squad.

Andy Carroll

The 2011/12 season saw the Magpies secure a top five finish, which allowed them to qualify for Europe the following campaign.

Carroll failed to live up to this £35m fee back in 2011, yet he did shine for Newcastle during his time on Tyneside.

Sunderland journalist reveals the thing Le Bris loves about Eliezer Mayenda

Journalist Phil Smith has revealed what Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris loves about one Black Cats player, following another Championship win that put them top of the table.

Sunderland top of the Championship

The Black Cats are flying under their new manager, with dreams of a genuine Championship automatic promotion push now growing by the week.

On Saturday, Sunderland picked up a 3-1 victory in the long trip south to Portsmouth, and it means Le Bris' side still have a 100% record to start to new season, winning all four league matches to date. They are the only team to achieve that goal.

Victories have also been secured against Cardiff City, Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley, the latter of which felt like a statement victory, due to the Clarets arguably being seen as the favourites to win the Championship title in 2024/25.

It is still early days, of course, and losing star man Jack Clarke to Ipswich Town is a massive blow, but life under Le Bris couldn't be going much better at the moment. Various players are thriving for Sunderland, including Chris Rigg, who at only 17 years of age, already looks like a seasoned veteran, featuring in all four league matches and starting three of them. It is another young gem who has come in for special praise, though.

Journalist talks up Le Bris' admiration for Mayenda

Writing for The Sunderland Echo on Monday, Smith claimed that Eliezer Mayenda has become a favourite of Le Bris' at Sunderland due to "his willingness to learn and how quickly he was able to understand the demands being placed on him in terms of his out-of-possession work".

He also adds that "at this point, we have to acknowledge that his status in this squad has changed", in terms of him now being first choice instead of a backup attacking option, perhaps even changing future transfer plans when it comes to signing a senior number nine.

Mayenda deserves all the praise that is coming his way, following an excellent start to the season that has seen him lead the line impressively. The 19-year-old has scored and assisted twice apiece in his first four Championship appearances of the season, while Le Bris himself has heaped praise on him.

“He truly sets a good example for the entire squad. Last season, he wasn’t in the starting lineup, but his desire to enhance his game is commendable. He possesses a wealth of talent, but being young means he is constantly striving to fine-tune his skills. His hard work was rewarded today."

At 19, Mayenda still has to be considered a work in progress, and fans must stay on his side if he goes through a bad run of form, but the early signs are so exciting.

Wolves may now be without "great" star vs Newcastle amid late injury scare

With the return of Premier League action this weekend, Wolverhampton Wanderers could be without one of Gary O’Neil’s star men for their next clash up against Newcastle United.

Wolves injury news

The Midlands club will instantly be on the hunt for their first three points of the season against Newcastle following a tough start before the international break. Shoved aside by Arsenal on the opening day, Wolves then suffered the same fate against Chelsea before drawing against Nottingham Forest to take one point from nine available.

O’Neil won’t be too concerned as of yet, however. After all, it’s still very early days and he’ll be more aware than anyone just how much of a transition his side will need to make in the next few months after losing Pedro Neto and Max Kilman in the summer. It’s a transition that could do with going smoothly without any injury troubles, but Premier League action rarely allows for that.

On that front, the Midlands already look set to be without two star men for the visit of Newcastle in what is an undoubted early blow. As confirmed by Gary O’Neil, Rayan Ait-Nouri faces a late fitness check, as does Mario Lemina, ahead of their game against the Magpies on Sunday.

He told the media via The Express and Star’s Liam Keen: “Everyone is OK and in a decent spot. Mario and Rayan haven’t trained much and there will be late checks on them. Yerson had cramp in both calves and didn’t train fully today, but there’s no injury.”

It will be interesting to see just who comes in for Ait-Nouri, in particular, given that Wolves sent backup left-back Hugo Bueno out on loan to Feyenoord in the summer. Left waiting to step up in place will now likely be Toti Gomes, who is primarily a centre-back in a far from ideal option for O’Neil to be left with.

"Great" Ait-Nouri has become key man at Wolves

A name linked with a move away to the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United in recent months, Ait-Nouri has well and truly established himself as a key man under O’Neil after being cast to one side under former boss Julen Lopetegui.

Earning his place back under his current manager, Ait-Nouri hasn’t looked back since and can revel in the praise of O’Neil, who said last season via Molineux News: “He’s a great lad who has loads of ability. I absolutely love him as a guy and he’s come on so much as well, with his professionalism and the way he approaches things. He’s learning, asking loads of really good questions where I can help him understand things.”

Without him for Newcastle’s visit, Wolves will be lacking that attacking element down the left-hand side, especially if it is to be Gomes in Ait-Nouri’s place, and may be left sitting deeper as a result.

The last thing that O’Neil needs is for an opening blip to turn into the beginning of a one-way course towards a relegation battle this season, highlighting the importance of Wolves’ hunt for three points ending in success sooner rather than later.
