Cameron Green is learning his lessons at the right time

Green has shown enough poise to suggest that the lessons of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will be converted into truly influential displays

Daniel Brettig18-Jan-2021With the possible exception of Will Pucovski, seldom has more expectation accompanied a recent Australian debutant than that experienced by Cameron Green. He had undoubtedly scored the runs to warrant his place at such a young age, cracking comfortably more than 1000 with four sizeable centuries in his most recent 12 Sheffield Shield games. Green also carried the promise of a possibly dominant allrounder having first been chosen by Western Australia as a bowler and scooping plenty of wickets before he was held prisoner by a series of back problems.Add to this the prospect of starting out in the highest of high-profile Test series against India, and there was much for Green to take in, even before he took the batting and bowling creases. What spectators and viewers have seen of Green in the subsequent four matches is a player of enormous promise, undoubtedly, but one still smoothing the rough edges of his game with the bat and even more so with the ball.He has, as Simon Katich observed during his breakout innings of 84 at the SCG, “two gears”, those of stolid defence and then a much more freewheeling and powerful hitting game. The nuances of Test cricket require a range of different gears at many points in between those poles, as aptly demonstrated on the penultimate day of the series.Cameron Green punches down the ground•Getty ImagesGreen walked out to accompany a settled Steven Smith when Australia had just lost the fourth wicket of the morning session, Matthew Wade glancing into Rishabh Pants gloves and perhaps into history as far as his stop-start Test career is concerned. The Gabba surface, which has rewarded tight bowling throughout the match, had begun to deteriorate further in terms of the widening of existing cracks and the forming of new ones, while Mohammad Siraj was putting in yet another outstanding spell.Perhaps genuflecting to Smith, who with every hour of this series has looked more like his usual Test match self and must now be looking forward to rejoining battle with South Africa three years since the unseemly events of 2018, Green concentrated almost solely on survival through his first 41 balls, managing only six singles in that time. He may also have been run out by his very first ball, edging Washington Sundar towards the covers and being reprieved on his instinctive dash for a single by the fact that the bowler was off-balance in retrieving it.This period underlined that, at this developmental point, Green is still liable to be tied down by good bowling without the ability as yet to find unseen corners of the field in which to escape the strikes with singles or more forcefully turn the scoreboard over with twos. This meant that Smith, playing far more positively, took the major share of responsibility in the early part of their stand to ensure the scoring rate did not dip below three an over with time and the unpromising weather forecast on Australian minds.A view pushed consistently by Greg Chappell down the years and now more widely understood, is the value of getting gifted players into the Australian side early on, the better for them to learn many of the required lessons at the highest possible level and thus mature as quickly as possible without gaining too many bad habits. It was the same philosophy that saw Smith himself make his Test debut for Australia as early as a 21-year-old in 2010 before ironing out the deficiencies in his game rapidly enough to be an international force by the age of 24.So it should follow that, much as Smith has worked his way into this series, Green will be able to evolve in a timely fashion in his Test career. “I certainly feel as though I’ve got better as the series has gone on, just purely out of spending time in the middle that’s for sure,” Smith said.”I think I said after Melbourne the longest I’d spent in the middle was 63 balls or whatever it was, the one-day hundreds that I scored at the SCG, and that was for about 12 months. So certainly been able to spend a good amount of time in the first innings in Sydney playing with really positive intent. That made me feel a lot more comfortable at the crease and able to find some rhythm.”I thought [Green] batted really well. They bowled pretty well to him to be fair, the wicket was starting to do a few things. I reckon there was that one over from Natarajan where he copped a few, that’s where the wicket started to sort of play a few more tricks. I think he got five balls in that over that did probably five different things.”The other half of Green’s game, still taking time to unfold in the wake of back stress fractures, is that of a pace bowler who has the natural gifts of height and trajectory with which to worry most top players should he get all the mechanics into a sound enough order. This much was neatly summarised by Damien Fleming earlier in the Test, with the understanding that a bowler concentrating on technical form and changes to ensure the avoidance of future injuries will always take time to “groove” an action before full fluency returns.”He bowls full and definitely shapes the ball away from the right-hand batsmen,” Fleming said on Seven. “His first Test match in Adelaide, I think it was deliberate for him to bowl short to Virat Kohli. Now since that Test Match, I think he has bowled a fraction short, hasn’t given that red Kookaburra enough time to swing in the air. I think it’s due, isn’t it? Your fourth Test match, get your first Test wicket?”He’s made changes to his action because of stress fractures. He’s come into this series with hundreds of runs in Sheffield Shield so his batting technique is grooved, but unfortunately, he is still trying to groove this bowling action which over time is only going to benefit himself and the Australian cricket team. But, you know, four-over spells in Shield cricket coming into this Test series, I don’t think he has built the confidence in his action yet.”That sort of confidence may be derived from a wicket or two, and this was certainly something Smith had in mind as he looked at some of the widening cracks at the Gabba. “All the boys have been really impressed with him around the group, the way he’s handled everything as a young kid coming into play Test cricket,” Smith said of Green.”I think tomorrow he might actually be quite a handful with the ball, with that extra height and those cracks coming into play, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him firstly take his first wicket in Test cricket, which I know he’s pretty eager to get, but I think he might just be in for a pretty reasonable day.”If Green has not dominated moments of this series in the manner of India’s find Siraj, he has shown enough poise at a young age to suggest that the formative lessons of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will be converted into truly influential displays well before he reaches the age at which Smith finally felt at home as a Test cricketer.

Chelsea hold internal talks over signing once-£100m England star this week

Chelsea chiefs have internally discussed the possibility of signing a once-£100 million player, who is in the current England squad for Euro 2024.

Chelsea to move for new senior attackers this summer

The west Londoners have already sealed deals for Marc Guiu from Barcelona, who put pen to paper on a £5 million move, and Brazilian starlet Estevao Willian to the tune of a rumoured £51 million.

However, both players could be seen as ones for the future rather than immediate upgrades to Enzo Maresca's first team. Estevao isn't even linking up with the club until 2025, so it is believed more attackers could come through the door at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are still interested in Napoli star Victor Osimhen, while Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams remains a heavily linked target for Maresca. The west Londoners were heavily reliant on both Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson for their output last season, with both players scoring a combined 42 goals in all competitions.

The Stamford Bridge recruitment team want to add more attacking impetus, with journalist Simon Phillips now claiming they've reignited their interest in Brentford star Ivan Toney.

Chelsea chiefs hold internal discussions over signing Toney

The Three Lions striker, who came off the bench against Slovakia to help rescue England with the winning assist for Harry Kane in extra time, was commanding a £100 million price tag in January – as Bees boss Thomas Frank was determined to keep him until this summer at least.

He could now leave for much less with his contract expiring next year, with Chelsea chiefs holding internal talks this week over whether to sign Toney.

The 28-year-old's best season came during 2022/2023, where he bagged 20 goals in the Premier League alone, but was forced to spend the majority of last campaign on the sidelines due to an on-field ban for alleged gambling.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney

Interestingly, Chelsea have been urged to do a Toney deal for years now, with Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony claiming back in 2022 that they could seriously benefit from him.

“I’ll say this. Is there a better number nine at Chelsea? Is there a better number nine at Man United? Then let me ask you a question," said MacAnthony on The Hard Truth podcast (via GOAL).

"If you were Man United and Chelsea and you can go and write a cheque for £100million and buy a player from Holland or a player from France and Italy and give them a year-and-a-half to acclimatise, are you going to write a cheque and buy one of the top three number nines in the Premier League, who is not even in the prime of his career?”

“If Liverpool had owners who would write that cheque, I would happily have him in Liverpool’s team, like that. The proof is in the pudding, he’s promoted to the Premier League with a team that’s not fancied to stay up, he’s one of the top three goalscorers in the Premier League in a team that, again, is not a favourite to be top-10, top-12 in the Premier League.”

Already scouted: Spurs in frame to sign a "monster" Richarlison replacement

We might be just over three weeks away from the return of the Premier League, but with the transfer window set to remain open for another five weeks, there is plenty of time for teams to complete their business.

This is great news for Tottenham Hotspur as, aside from signing Archie Gray, they have yet to make any serious additions to the first team.

In fact, Daniel Levy and Co seem to have prioritised sales recently, with Pierre-Emile Højbjerg joining Marseille this week, Tanguy Ndombele joining OGC Nice earlier this month and even recent reports that Richarlison could be on his way to the Saudi Pro League this summer.

While the Brazilian striker has been far from great for the Lilywhites, they can't afford to sell him without bringing in a replacement, although, based on recent reports, that could be a problem the club are already addressing.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, Tottenham are one of several sides in the picture for Besiktas wonderkid Semih Kilicsoy.

The report has claimed that the Lilywhites and West Ham United have already sent scouts to watch the 18-year-old in action, while Aston Villa and Fulham have had offers rejected as neither club were anywhere close to the Turkish side's valuation of around €30m, which is about £25m.

It might seem like a lot of money to spend on a teenager because, well, it is.

However, given his recent performances and supposed potential, Levy and Co would be wise to match his price tag and bring him to N17, as he could already be the ideal replacement for Richarlison.

How Kilicsoy compares to Richarlison

Now, an argument could be made that at 18 years old, Kilicsoy would be too young to make a serious impact at Spurs, but as the old saying goes, if you're good enough, you're old enough.

Moreover, if Richarlison is to leave and an older replacement isn't brought in, then Ange Postecoglou's hand will be somewhat forced into playing the exciting forward, but with that said, how does he compare to the former Everton man?

Well, when it comes to the most critical metric for a striker, output, it is a worryingly close-fought competition – worrying for the Brazilian, that is.

For example, in 31 appearances across all competitions, the 27-year-old scored 12 goals and provided four assists, equating to a goal involvement every 1.93 games.

In comparison, the 18-year-old also scored 12 goals but provided three assists in 35 appearances, meaning he maintained a still impressive, but slightly worse average of a goal involvement every 2.33 games.

However, when you look at their contributions in the league alone, the teenager comes out ahead with 14 goals and assists in 23 games to the 15 in 28 from the Lilywhites' striker.

Ultimately, while the Turkish "monster," as data analyst Ben Mattinson dubbed him, is just behind the Nova Venécia-born international at the moment, it's quite evident that he's on track to become a serious proposition.

Therefore, if he's given the time to do that in N17, Tottenham could have a real match-winner on their hands and the perfect long-term replacement for Richarlison.

KL Rahul ruled out of series with wrist sprain

India batsman KL Rahul has been ruled out of the remainder of the Australia Test series with a sprained left wrist. He had hurt the wrist on Saturday, during India’s practice session at the MCG.India have since flown to Sydney, where the third Test is scheduled to kick off on January 7. A fourth Test follows from January 15. The series is currently level at 1-1.Rahul will return to India for rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and require “about three weeks’ time to recover completely and regain full strength”, a BCCI release said. This could put him in doubt for at least the start of India’s four-Test home series against England, which is scheduled to begin on February 5 in Chennai.Rahul had not played either of the first two Tests against Australia, but there was potential for him to slot into the XI in Sydney given Mayank Agarwal’s poor run at the top.Rahul’s injury adds to a long list of unavailable players for India. Ishant Sharma was ruled out of the Australia tour with an abdominal muscle injury. Then, since the start of the Test series, India have also lost the services of Virat Kohli, who is away on paternity leave, and fast bowlers Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav who picked up injuries in first and second Test respectively. On the upside for the team, Rohit Sharma, who missed the first two Tests, is set to slot back into the XI, having joined the team in Melbourne after quarantine and been named deputy to stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane.

Maratona Tricolor!

A Ryan Barnett goal was the difference as Wrexham beat Mansfield 1-0 to cement their place in third in League One. It was a tough-fought game for the Welsh side, who scored just six minutes in and then had to withstand serious pressure from the visitors. Phil Parkinson's men managed to hold on and collect all three points, but the Stags would have been good value for the win themselves. McElhenney was in awe of Wrexham's opponents and took to X to praise them.

Despite their serious investment in both senior players and talents for the future, co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley remain in the market for a new forward and centre-back.

Chelsea are believed to be prioritising a new winger as one of their top transfer wishes, with Maresca apparently keen on providing competition for the likes of Raheem Sterling, Noni Madueke and Mykhailo Mudryk.

They hold no shortage of options, as reports heavily link Chelsea with the likes of Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams and Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi lately.

Chelsea contacted over signing Raphinha from Barcelona

According to HITC, Chelsea may now have a chance to do a deal for Raphinha, who is said to be keen on making a move back to England from Barcelona.

The former Leeds United star, who is valued at around £50 million, scored six goals and registered a further nine assists in La Liga last season. HITC claim Chelsea have been spoken to about signing Raphinha this summer, but it is unclear whether they were approached by the Brazilian's agents or Barca themselves.

The 27-year-old's proven top-flight experience could be a draw for Maresca's side, with Raphinha attracting plenty of praise during his time in the Premier League.

“Each week we are seeing more and more of his repertoire. He has so much to offer Leeds United," said former Whites striker Noel Whelan on Raphinha during his time at Elland Road (Football Insider).

“That skill in the corner against Gary Cahill was a typical bit of Brazilian magic. He really embarrassed Cahill with a clever megs. He is a player now who continuously has an effect on a game, in a positive way. Even if he is not on the scoresheet, he will have played a hand in the goal. He is relentless.

“He gets on the ball, has great balance, is very dynamic and he takes the game to the opposition. What impresses me is that he is not afraid to do the horrible side. I get more and more impressed by his worth ethic.”

Jay Shah, 32, is the youngest administrator to be appointed ACC president•BCCI

BCCI secretary Jay Shah was on Saturday elected president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) following the continental body’s annual general meeting held virtually. Shah, 32, replaced BCB president Nazmul Hassan in the post, and is the youngest administrator to be appointed ACC president. In a virtual address to the AGM, Shah said: “The ACC continues to foster healthy rivalry among some of the biggest cricket playing nations while it also takes the sport deeper into the smaller pockets. We must remain committed to this cause and ensure there is an all-round development in the region.”Shah, who took over as the BCCI honorary secretary in October 2019, said the resumption of age-group and women’s tournaments amid the pandemic remains a challenge to be met.”The pandemic has posed enormous challenges but history has shown that innovation often arises in periods of adversity and we must adapt and innovate to stay ahead,” Shah said. “While I have noticed that most Boards have again started their cricketing operations with their senior team, the challenge still remains with women’s cricket and age-group cricket. The ACC has done pioneering work in both women’s cricket and age-group with the multiple tournaments it conducts across the year and we must build on this.”

The ACC is responsible for organising the Asia Cup tournaments, including the senior men, women and Under-19 boys’ competitions. Last year the ACC decided to postpone the men’s tournament owing to the pandemic, with June 2021 and Sri Lanka jotted down as the date and venue.
