Leeds played a blinder with exit of £1.5m man who’s now in League Two

Archie Gray, who only turned 18 last month, has been the breakout star of Leeds United's season under German head coach Daniel Farke.

The former Norwich boss has placed his faith in the academy graduate, who had not made a first-team appearance prior to this season, and has handed him 38 games in the Championship so far.

Largely playing out of his natural position – central midfield – at right-back, Gray has been a regular starter, with 35 starts in the division, and appears to have a bright future ahead of him at Elland Road.

However, not every talented young player gets the opportunity to make the breakthrough, and one former Leeds starlet who did not make a first-team appearance was Luke Garbutt, who the club played a blinder with in hindsight, as he flopped after moving on from the Whites.

How much Everton paid for Luke Garbutt

The Yorkshire-born left-back came up through the youth ranks at Thorp Arch and made it up to U18 level before his move to Everton in the summer of 2009.

It was reported by The Telegraph at the time that the Premier League side had to pay an initial fee of £600k in a deal that could have risen to £1.5m with add-ons, which was determined by a tribunal as compensation for Leeds' development of Garbutt up to that point.

Then 16, the young defender had already been capped five times by England at U16 level and racked up 24 appearances for the U17s by 2010.

Luke Garbutt

He was, therefore, a promising talent who had shown enough potential to both represent his country at youth level on a number of occasions and be snapped up by a Premier League team, which was too much of a temptation for Garbutt for Leeds to convince him to stay.

Where Luke Garbutt now plays

Now 30, the experienced full-back currently plays in League Two, the fourth division of English football, for Salford, who he joined from League One Blackpool on a free transfer last summer.

It turned out that Leeds played a blinder by earning a minimum of £600k, rising to £1.5m, in compensation for the left-back in 2009 as his career did not kick on in the right direction after the move to the Premier League at Goodison Park.

In 11 years on Merseyside, Garbutt played 12 first-team matches in all competitions for Everton – including five in the Premier League – before being released on a free transfer in 2020.

The former England U21 international had spells out on loan with Colchester United, Fulham, Ipswich Town, and Wigan, among others, but never played at a higher level than the Championship during those moves.

As you can see in the table above, Garbutt has featured regularly for Salford in League Two and has provided attacking quality from left-back, whilst being suspect defensively with more than half of his duels being lost and a staggering 12 yellow cards to his name.

Overall, Leeds inadvertently played a blinder with the defender's exit as they raked in the cash before it was too late and Everton rarely used him before allowing the flop to leave for nothing in 2020.

Ehsan Mani, Nazmul Hassan to meet this week for Bangladesh tour discussions

That means a Test series will not be possible; BCB to relay the decision to PCB

Mohammad Isam12-Jan-2020The chairman of the PCB is set to meet the BCB President this week as Pakistan attempt to keep the scheduled tour of Bangladesh on track. A press release from the PCB stated that Ehsan Mani would meet with Nazmul Hassan on the sidelines of the ICC’s Governance Review Committee Meeting to try and get a clearer picture of the BCB’s position on the tour. It represents the first official reaction of the PCB to Bangladesh’s announcement yesterday, which effectively appeared to put paid to the prospect of a two-Test match series later this month, as was originally scheduled.Little had changed following a Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) meeting on Sunday that was expected to produce a final decision on Bangladesh’s proposed tour of Pakistan. At a media briefing in Dhaka after the meeting, BCB chief Nazmul Hassan said the government had told the board it could go ahead with a tour of Pakistan, but to keep it “short” due to the Iran-US tensions. This essentially means Bangladesh can play a T20I series but not Tests, which was the line that the BCB had taken in December. The BCB will now speak to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) about its decision.”We are clear cut, but let’s see how they react,” Hassan said. “As far as security is concerned, T20 is a better option. They should be happy that we still want to go to play T20s. We just wanted rescheduling [of the Tests], not saying we won’t tour. This is the best thing we can offer to Pakistan.”The BCB’s citation of rising tensions “in the Middle East” as a leading cause of it not embarking on a longer tour would appear to rule out hosting the Test series in the UAE – Pakistan’s home for the bulk of their home commitments over the past decade – as well. But the PCB is adamant the series be held within Pakistan, so that may be a moot point anyway. ESPNcricinfo understands any offer that does not include playing the Tests in Pakistan is unlikely to be acceptable to the PCB.The proposed tour features three T20Is in Lahore, on January 23, 25 and 27, followed by two Tests, originally slated for Rawalpindi and Karachi. But then the BCB said it wanted to split the series, playing the T20Is in Pakistan and the Tests at a neutral venue. It is learnt that last week, PCB offered to fly Bangladesh in and out after each Test – land in Karachi, go back to Dhaka, and then return to Rawalpindi directly for the second Test. Following the BCB’s announcement, it would seem this offer has been rejected.Bangladeshi sides have toured Pakistan in the recent past, but the senior men’s team hasn’t done so since playing a five-match ODI series there in 2007-08. Seven years ago, they were close to deciding on a tour to Pakistan, only for the AHM Mustafa Kamal-led BCB to pull out shortly after the decision to tour was taken.

Arsenal plotting to sign £86m Saka rival who’s "terrifyingly good"

What a time it is to be associated with Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta's side still marching on in the hope of landing a first Premier League crown in 20 years, having also booked their place in the last eight of the Champions League after narrowly edging past a stubborn Porto side.

After years of frustration in the late Wenger years and under Unai Emery – as well as in Arteta's early stint in charge – the Gunners are now reaping the rewards of their patient approach, as well as their improved record in the transfer market under the watchful eye of Edu Gaspar.

The £105m addition of Declan Rice, for instance, has swiftly paid off with the Englishman arguably the 'signing of the season' – as per pundit Danny Murphy – while even the oft-maligned Kai Havertz has begun to catch fire, boasting nine goals and three assists in all competitions to date.

Declan Rice for Arsenal.

With those two high-profile deals looking like undoubted success stories so far, perhaps the Emirates outfit may be keen to spend big again this summer to take yet another step toward achieving domestic and European dominance…

Arsenal's plans for the summer

According to a latest report from Spanish outlet, Sport – via Sport Witness – the north Londoners are said to be plotting a move for Real Madrid sensation, Rodrygo, with both the Gunners and title rivals Liverpool said to have made contact with Los Blancos regarding a potential summer swoop.

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo.

The piece suggests it may prove a tricky task trying to prise the Brazilian – whose current deal expires in 2028 – from the Bernabeu any time soon, with any prospective deal likely to cost in the region of €100m (£86m).

That being said, all may not be lost for Edu and co as the 23-year-old is said to be aware that his game time could be hampered in the Spanish capital next term if Kylian Mbappe is to arrive as expected, with his young compatriot Endrick also set to be added to the mix.

With competition for places set to be rife, perhaps Arsenal can entice the former Santos to make the move to England…

Rodrygo's season in numbers

It would certainly be a real statement if the Gunners were to snap up the £86m man ahead of next season, particularly due to the fact that the South American star typically operates on the right flank – the same role that Bukayo Saka occupies in the capital.

While the lack of a centre-forward has seen Rodrygo move centrally this season – where has netted 13 times and registered eight assists – it is on the right where he has normally been utilised in Madrid, ensuring that Saka may be left looking nervously over his shoulder.

Bukayo Saka.

Just a year older than the Englishman, the in-demand ace has already plundered 18 goals and 11 assists in just 47 Champions League games to date, proving just what an effective and reliable presence he is at the top level.

Lauded for being "terrifyingly good" with regard to his "finishing levels" by journalist Sam Tighe, Rodrygo's case is enhanced even further by his apparent likeness to the man who may replace him in Spain, Mbappe, with the pair said to share a number of stylistic and statistical similarities, as per FBref.

The pair are particularly alike with regard to their ability to breeze past and bamboozle defenders with ease, with Rodrygo ranking in the top 1% among his fellow forwards in Europe's top five leagues for progressive carries (5.78), as well as in the top 3% for successful take-ons per 90 (2.60) – Mbappe, meanwhile, ranks in the top 2% for both of those metrics.

What also sets the duo apart from the rest is just how effective they are at retaining possession despite their willingness to create in the final third, with Rodrygo ranking in the top 1% for pass completion (88%) while Mbappe ranks in the top 2% in that regard.

For comparison, Saka ranks in just the bottom 45% for pass completion (74.7%) among his fellow attacking midfielders/wingers, and while he does rank in the top 15% for progressive carries (5.10) , his record at actually beating his man is rather inferior, as he ranks in just the bottom 46% for successful take-ons (1.63).

Of course, this record can be easily overlooked when considering the Hale End graduate's 29 goals and assists this term in all competitions, although it does indicate that he may have a fight on his hands for a regular role if Rodrygo is to arrive in the near future…

Chelsea can forget about Toney by signing £42m "machine"

It's been another disappointing season of Premier League football for Chelsea this year, as Mauricio Pochettino has been unable to turn his promising young squad into a cohesive unit.

The Blues have looked out at sea for much of the season, although their expected goal numbers suggest that they should have another seven goals in the bag, indicating that with a clinical forward, they could well climb the table next year.

One striker who has recently been touted for a move to Stamford Bridge is Ivan Toney, but based on even more recent reports, Todd Boehly and Co could be eyeing a younger and more exciting alternative.

Chelsea interest in £42m marksman

According to a recent report from 90min, Chelsea are among several Premier League clubs who have maintained their interest in RB Leipzig's promising young striker, Benjamin Šeško.

Benjamin Sesko

The report has revealed that, alongside the Blues, Manchester United and Arsenal are also keen on bringing the Slovenia international to England in the summer. At the same time, Paris Saint-Germain are also very interested in bringing him to France.

While the number of competing clubs is far from ideal for the West Londoners, the price it would take to secure the forward's signature certainly is, with his release clause being set at just €50m – £42m – and the report has revealed that Leipzig may be willing to accept less if the final price is close enough.

The report has stated that Chelsea currently view the 20-year-old as a cheaper alternative to Victor Osimhen, and while that's true, he'd also be a brilliant alternative to Toney.

How Benjamin Šeško compares to Ivan Toney

Now, his age is the first and arguably most important reason why Chelsea should look at signing Šeško over Toney.

By this point, it's crystal clear that Boehly and Co want to create a team full of promising young talents who can grow and develop together over the coming years.

So, adding a 28-year-old striker into the mix over a 20-year-old seems counterproductive, especially when, on average, centre-forwards tend to peak at around 27 and then steadily decline, per The Athletic.

Aside from the squad-building aspect, there is also a strong case that the former RB Salzburg goal-scoring "machine", as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, is just the better player of the pair.

With Toney missing a significant portion of the season due to his betting-related ban, it would be unfair to compare the pair's actual output this year. However, as their underlying numbers are calculated per 90, they can be compared for this season, and unfortunately for the Englishman, while he comes out on top in some metrics, he's a distant second in many others.

For example, according to FBref, the "outstanding" Slovenian, as Kulig described him, produces a higher non-penalty goal and assists figure, takes more shots on target, scores from more of those shots, has better passing accuracy, produces more goal-creating actions, and is more successful in taking on defenders, all per 90.

In defence of the Brentford star, he does win more aerial duels and produce more shot-creating actions, but aside from that, it's a fairly one-sided comparison.

Ultimately, if Chelsea want to add a new and seriously talented striker to their team, who won't cost an arm and a leg and should only get better over the next few years, they should sign Šeško and forget all about Toney.

Isuru Udana ruled out of third T20I against India

The allrounder had hurt his back while fielding in the second T20I on Tuesday

Sri Lanka allrounder Isuru Udana has been sidelined from the team’s must-win third T20I against India in Pune on Friday with a back injury. The 31-year had injured himself during India’s chase in the second T20I on Tuesday night, while attempting to stop the ball at short third man. India eventually chased down the target of 143 with seven wickets and 15 balls to spare, handing Sri Lanka their fourth successive defeat in the format. India are now 1-0 up in the three-match series, with the first T20I in Guwahati having been abandoned without a ball being bowled. After the loss in Indore, Sri Lanka coach Mickey Arthur said that Udana had hurt his back and was in “hell a lot of pain.” Despite being ruled out, Udana will work with the physio and stay back with the squad in Pune.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Manchester United's dwindling conditions are known to many very well and the same is reportedly the case with people close to Ten Hag, as the Dutch coach has revealed in a recent interview. Ten Hag disclosed that a lot of people told him not to join the club when he left Ajax in the summer of 2022. However, the 54-year-old decided to take the challenge head-on.

Speaking in an interview with The Times, Ten Hag said: "So many people advised me not to come here. I could have gone into projects with better conditions, with much better structures but I chose this challenge because I feel like Manchester United is my club and I want to go for this challenge."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ten Hag's time as Manchester United boss has not been the most outstanding, however, earlier this summer he was given a two-year extension on his running contract with the Red Devils and is set to stay at the club for the next two years. Despite a poor 2023/24 season, Ten Hag believes he holds the confidence of the Red Devils' top brass. He said: "It’s helpful when you feel the backing from the leadership group. That helps because then you know where you’re building to, that you do it together.

"When you are in a very good, very strong bond that gives you confidence. Also the dressing room, they will feel this."

As things stand, they have not won since the beginning of February, when they beat fellow bottom half side Plymouth Argyle at the Stadium of Light, and their run of seven games without a win has dented what had until that point been a promising campaign.

With a late run for the playoffs now out of the question, it is a summer to consolidate on what they already have, and their new brand of football combined with some younger signings have shown some glimpses of what is possible in England's second tier.

The likes of Dan Ballard (24), Jack Clarke (23) and Dan Neil (22) have been added to with young talents Jobe Bellingham (18), Adil Aouchiche (21) and Romaine Mundle (20) as the club look to find a more sustainable way back into the top flight this time around. That drive is set to continue too, with several new contracts set to be offered out.

Four new deals in the works

Now as per the Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats are looking to offer four new deals to some of their young stars in a bid to keep them at the club for next season amid interest from elsewhere.

Academy talents Dan Cameron, Tom Lavery, Luke Bell and Jenson James have reportedly been offered professional contracts at the club, with the plan for them to make the step up into the first team next season and beyond.

There is also the potential of a fifth new face, with Sunderland having agreed a deal 'in principle' with 16-year-old Chris Rigg, who will be able to sign professional terms when he turns 17 in June, though it is added that 'until the deal is signed, the midfielder could be poached by clubs higher up the food chain'.

Fabrizio Romano shares transfer update on Leeds star Crysencio Summerville

Leeds United have been handed a concerning update on one of their stars ahead of the summer transfer window, with a reliable journalist offering the latest on the future of talented winger Crysencio Summerville.

Leeds fighting for promotion and to keep their star players

Despite their impressive unbeaten run in 2024 finally coming to an end on Saturday, Daniel Farke's Leeds side remain firmly in the hunt for one of the two automatic promotion spots in the Championship as the season nears its climax.

Their recent form (a defeat followed by a draw) has been matched by second-placed Ipswich Town, with both sides stumbling in the final stages of the season. Meanwhile, Championship leaders Leicester City also lost in their most recent outing, though they still have a game in hand on the two sides below them and boast a vastly superior goal difference to Ipswich.

But with four games left of the season, one side will certainly face the risk of play-off heartbreak, likely with a record number of points (The current most points that didn't ensure automatic promotion is Sunderland's tally of 90 in the 1997/98 season). Should that prove to be Leeds, it could have major ramifications on their squad for next season.

Contact made: Leeds eye £150,000-a-week international in huge £30m move

But they could need to secure promotion to make it happen.

ByBen Browning Apr 9, 2024 Latest Summerville update provided

With doubts still circling Wilfried Gnonto's future, an update has been forthcoming on fellow winger Crysencio Summerville. The Dutch forward has been in excellent form this season, grabbing 17 goals and 8 assists in 39 Championship outings and helping cement his position as one of the most exciting talents in the Championship.

Still just 22-years-old, he has caught the eye of plenty of clubs in recent seasons, with Liverpool reportedly one of those keen on the Dutchman should they lose Mohamed Salah. They are not alone though, with reports also linking Bayer Leverkusen and Newcastle United with a move for the young winger.

Leeds United forwardCrysencio Summerville.

In his daily briefing, reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that while there are no advanced talks with anyone just yet, he is expecting lots of clubs to chase Summerville's signature this summer and clubs will definitely "push" for his signing.

“I’ve been asked by some fans about links with Liverpool and others, and for sure many, really many clubs are monitoring Crysencio Summerville ahead of this summer", Romano explained.

“At the moment I’m told there’s nothing advanced with anyone, but interest will be there. Clubs will push, then it will be up to Leeds United to make a decision in the summer."

Leeds have reportedly slapped a £45m price tag on Summerville's head this summer to ward off interested parties, though they will do their own chances of keeping the youngster the world of good if they can secure promotion back to the top flight, with their talisman clearly too good for England's second tier.

'Be prepared!' – Andre Onana vows to 'take more risks' in worrying message to Man Utd fans ahead of new season

Manchester United fans are likely to be concerned heading into the new season after goalkeeper Andre Onana promised he will take more risks.

Onana criticised for mistakes at Man UtdGoalkeeper had tumultuous debut seasonPromises to be even more bold next termWHAT HAPPENED?

United's No.1 goalkeeper was heavily criticised in his debut season at Old Trafford after making many costly errors as the Red Devils crashed out of the Champions League at the group stage and finished eighth in the Premier League. His distribution was also called into question at times, with many of his passes out from the back going astray.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Onana won over sections of the United fanbase as he grew into his role over the course of the season. He says he has no intention of taking a more careful approach in the 2024-25 campaign, however, as he urged fans to "be prepared" for an even more unconventional approach when the Red Devils get underway.

WHAT ONANA SAID

Asked about his risky approach, Onana said: "That’s me. And I think it’s what you’re gonna see this season because I will take a lot of risks. I can tell you in advance already! Be prepared because it’s gonna be this season, trust me! I will enjoy it even more when this season starts."

He added: “Of course, because the best team in the world takes risks. Building from the back, recognise things, situations, when the opponent jumps one against one, or when they press with three or with four, recognise we dominate the pressing if it’s a No.9 or the 11.

“So for me it’s important to recognise those kind of things and make the best decision for the team. I will take a lot of responsibility and I think my back is huge to carry it all, no? I think it’s gonna be nice this season."
