England top group with five pointsSlovenia & Denmark next on threeDanes grab second place due to better disciplinary recordWHAT HAPPENED?

Denmark have beaten Slovenia to second place in Group C, behind England, despite the two teams finishing level on points and goal difference at Euro 2024. Both Denmark and Slovenia ended the group stage with three points and identical records after achieving three draws, with two goals scored and two conceded. The two teams also played out a 1-1 draw when they met, meaning there was nothing to separate the two sides at the competition.

Denmark eventually ended up finishing second as it was left to discipline to determine which team finished ahead of the other. Both nations also received the same number of yellow cards on their respective playing squads, but UEFA have now confirmed that Denmark finished second because of a booking given to Slovenia assistant coach Novakovic Milivoje.

Denmark may have gone through in second place but are now set to face hosts Germany in the last 16, while Slovenia will also face a tricky draw and could come up against Portugal or the winners of Group E. England are set to play on Sunday but must wait to discover their next opponents.

Glasner must axe Crystal Palace dud who earns more than Guehi

It's been a rollercoaster of a season for Crystal Palace fans this year.

The Eagles have picked up some impressive results in the Premier League, such as their 2-2 draw away to Manchester City, but they've also looked abysmal at points, such as in their 4-1 defeat to bitter rivals Brighton & Hove Albion.

Unfortunately, there has been more of the latter than the former so far, which resulted in the sacking of Roy Hodgson and the hiring of the exciting Austrian coach, Oliver Glasner, earlier this month.

The former Eintracht Frankfurt boss has already seen his side pick up four points in two games, and while there's a lot of work to be done, one thing he should do is make sure the club don't offer another contract to one of their senior players in the summer, a player who somehow earns more than Marc Guehi.

Marc Guehi's time at Crystal Palace

Guehi has been out of action since the club's embarrassing defeat to Brighton earlier this month, and while there was hope he might be back in action soon, it was confirmed earlier today that he's going to miss at least another two months following knee surgery.

The nine-capped Englishman was signed for a fee of £18m from Chelsea in July 2021 after spending an impressive season and a half on loan with Swansea City in the Championship, and has since become an integral cog in the Eagles' machine.

In his first season in south London, he made 42 appearances for the club and chipped in at both ends of the pitch, scoring four goals and providing one assist alongside his impressive defensive displays.

He would make another 40 appearances the following season, and even with his current injury problems, he already has 26 this year.

Alongside his defensive abilities, the Abidjan-born monster has become one of Palace's most prominent leaders and was named captain for the first time in a game against Watford in February 2022, something he described as a "huge honour."

Since then, he has pulled on the armband many more times in the absence of Joel Ward, and he has rarely, if ever, looked out of place doing so.

With all that in mind, you might expect the "top-class" centre-back, as he was described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, to be one of the club's top earners. Yet, his £50k-per-week wage is not even in the top five, and he sits comfortably behind a senior player who is undoubtedly less crucial to the side.

Nathaniel Clyne's wage at Crystal Palace

Yes, the highly-rated and incredibly impressive Guehi earns significantly less – £30k-per-week, to be exact – than right-back Nathaniel Clyne at Selhurst Park.

Now, the first thing to say is that while there might still be some value in keeping the 32-year-old around in terms of experience and squad depth, his number of performances combined with his woeful output makes it a hard case to push.

For example, in the four seasons he has spent at the club since his return in October 2020, the former Liverpool full-back has made just 77 appearances, scored five goals and provided two assists, which is a worse offensive output than Guehi, which just isn't good enough for a modern-day right-back.

Moreover, the "poor" defender, as described by journalist Josh Bunting, is currently earning £80k-per-week, equating to about £4.1m-per-year and making him the joint third-highest earner at the club.

Technical director Johan Lange and Chief Football Officer Scott Munn, who oversee the club's transfer activity alongside chairman Daniel Levy and unofficial consultant Fabio Paratici, have been praised for their dealings as Spurs' new data-driven scouting system reaps rewards.

Summer signings like Micky van de Ven and James Maddison have been rip-roaring successes and appear tailor-made for Ange Postecoglou's intense, high-pressing style of play.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham's growing stature as a football club has seen them usurp Chelsea as London's richest side. They also beat European heavyweights like Bayern Munich and Barcelona to the January signings of Dragusin and Bergvall respectively, so the future is looking pretty optimistic as things stand.

Taking this into account, it will be interesting to see how they tackle the summer market, and supporters may well be thrilled that Tottenham are apparently becoming pretty organised already on that front with months to go until the window reopens.

Spurs did fail to bring in a new senior midfielder last month, though, despite the repeated links to Chelsea star Conor Gallagher among others. Sharing news of a potential alternative, Tutto Juve now claim that Postecoglou's side have their eye on Atalanta ace Teun Koopmeiners.

Tottenham "moving" early for Koopmeiners

The Dutchman, who featured at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, is said to be on Paratici, Levy and Lange's radar. According to Tutto Juve, as translated and shared by Sport Witness, Tottenham are "moving" early for Koopmeiners with the view of potentially signing him this summer.

They aren't the only ones, however, with Premier League rivals Man United also set to compete for the £51 million man this summer alongside Serie A giants Juventus.

Atalanta central midfielder Teun Koopmeiners.

Koopmeiners has made 19 Serie A appearances for Atalanta this season, bagging five goals and three assists, and has been praised by former Netherlands international Ruud Kroll for his ability to feature as a playmaker.

“Koop is a great player. He has an international caliber and is the starter in the Dutch national team," said Kroll.

"I certainly see him doing well at a big club. Juve or Milan? He would certainly be invaluable to both of them. Koopmeiners can play in all positions in the middle of the pitch: both as a playmaker and as a midfielder. He is a complete footballer who would be useful for all coaches, including Allegri.”

Concern for Liverpool as "outstanding" Reds hero could miss Arsenal clash

Liverpool have been dealt a potential huge blow ahead of the Reds' Premier League clash with Arsenal this weekend, with an "outstanding" player's involvement in the game in doubt.

Liverpool injury news

The Reds face arguably their biggest match of the season so far on Sunday afternoon, as they head to a Gunners side who are still very much in the title race. Victory for Jurgen Klopp's side at the Emirates could put them eight points ahead of their opponents, however, acting as a major incentive ahead of the game. That would arguably give the north Londoners too much to do up against both Liverpool and Manchester City, turning it into a familiar two-horse race at the top.

Going into Sunday's huge fixture, the Merseysiders' injury problems have eased overall, with so many top players to call upon for the manager. Alexis Mac Allister did go down in Wednesday's 4-1 defeat to Chelsea, however, leading to doubts over his involvement this weekend.

Now, a fresh injury worry has emerged, however, regarding arguably one of Liverpool's most important players at the moment.

Nunez could miss Arsenal clash

Taking to X on Friday, journalist Paul Joyce relayed Klopp's update that Nunez could miss the Arsenal game with a foot injury picked up against Chelsea, with a late fitness test potentially needed.

"Jurgen Klopp says he needs to check on the fitness of Darwin Nunez before Sunday's game with Arsenal. 'He left the stadium in a boot and it was not a football boot. Nothing broken the x-rays are clear, but we have to see if he can get his foot back into a boot.'"

Not having Nunez for Sunday's game would be an absolutely massive blow for Liverpool, considering what a rich vein of form the Uruguayan is in currently. Granted, plenty of chances are still being missed, not least against Chelsea in midweek, but he is such a threat with his pace, power and movement.

There is also the small matter of the 24-year-old having 11 assists to his name this season in all competitions, which is more than any Reds player, and Klopp lauded him after the Chelsea match, saying:

"He was really disappointed with himself about missing the penalty, but he is a handful. It was really hard for him. You could see at half-time that he was upset with himself. He missed a header too in the second half, but then he created a goal.

"It's crazy that he creates so many. We scored four goals, so who cares about the ones he didn't score? He will score goals; it will come. He is in outstanding shape, still a bit unlucky, so it's all fine."

The Reds are already thinking about life after Klopp.

Having Nunez fit to start would be a major boost for Klopp, but even having him available as an impact substitute would be far from a disaster, allowing him to chase down some tired legs in the second half.

Neste ano, a história é diferente. Foram nove gols marcados nos mesmos quatro jogos.

Cooper replaces Kycia Knight for third Australia ODI

Knight had injured her lower back during the opening overs of the first ODI of the series in Coolidge

The CWI interim selection panel has replaced the injured Kycia Knight with Britney Cooper for the third and final ODI of the series against Australia, on Wednesday in Antigua.Knight had injured her lower back during the opening overs of the first ODI of the series in Coolidge, where Australia thrashed West Indies by 178 runs. Knight did not bat in the West Indies chase as a result, and did not feature in the second game. After “examining the scans” done on her, the CWI medical panel ruled Knight of the third ODI.Cooper joined the team in Antigua on Monday in preparation for the final game even as West Indies trail the series 0-2.Cooper last played an ODI in June in England but her single-digit scores in the series led to her omission from the original ODI squad against Australia. In six international innings this year – two ODIs and four T20Is – she has scored only 57 runs so far with a high score of 20.West Indies are also without their regular vice-captain Hayley Matthews, who had been withdrawn from the series just hours before the start of the opening ODI, due to disciplinary issues. The exact nature of her breach of the code of conduct is not known yet.

Aston Villa’s next Grealish is the “second biggest flop of all time”

Aston Villa have been sensational this season, with Unai Emery turning the side into one that opponents dread facing.

The Spaniard’s influence is one of the main reasons for the development and success of the club, but he’s also brought in plenty of talent since his arrival.

Nicolo Zaniolo waits to come on for Aston Villa.

Nevertheless, with the pressure to perform instantly in the Premier League extremely high, many players struggle to start their time at a new club with a bang.

However, there was one Villa player who was supposed to be the heir to Jack Grealish but never really improved upon their start to life at Villa Park.

Philippe Coutinho’s first impression

In the summer of 2021, Villa legend Grealish left the club to join Manchester City in a £100m deal, and at first, they were unable to replace the captain.

With their star attacker gone, the Villans struggled in the Premier League, instantly losing their opening game 3-2 to newly promoted Watford and losing five consecutive games from October to the start of November.

Aston Villa winger Jack Grealish.

However, in January, their saviour arrived in the form of Philippe Coutinho, who joined the club on loan from Barcelona until the end of the season.

It didn’t take long for the Brazilian to make his mark on the Premier League once again, scoring on his debut for the club against Manchester United in a 2-2 draw.

In just his second start, Coutinho lit up Villa Park with an unbelievable performance against Leeds United, picking up a goal and two assists in a 3-3 draw.

At that point, the former Liverpool gem was even regarded as a "better player" than Grealish when at his best by journalist Charlie Wilson, and for the rest of the campaign, Coutinho became influential in attack, netting five goals and providing three assists in 16 starts, but unfortunately, that was the peak of his Villa career.

Philippe Coutinho in 2024

After a promising loan spell, Villa decided to make Coutinho’s loan deal permanent, spending £17m on his signature from Barcelona.

However, at the start of November, the attacking midfielder picked up a hamstring injury, which saw him return to action 50 days later, missing eight matches in the process.

Aston Villa midfielder Philippe Coutinho.

From that point on, he struggled to recover any of the form he once showed at the start of his Villa career, making just seven league starts all season and scoring once, with football writer Muhammad Butt calling him the "second biggest flop of all time" – in relation to his £142m move to Barcelona.

Fast forward to this season, and the number 23 made two sub appearances, before being shipped off to Qatar on loan due to Emery being unimpressed by the 31-year-old.

The 5 foot 8 wizard has played 12 games for Al Duhail this season, operating as a number ten. Over these games, Coutinho has scored four goals and picked up one assist.

It’s a shame that Coutinho failed to live up to his price tag or standards when joining Villa permanently, but with Emery’s current system, it’s difficult to see the creative midfielder have a major role to play.

Levy struck gold by selling Spurs flop who’s now goalless for £13m

Tottenham Hotspur have had numerous forgotten players over the years, with the club experiencing plenty of misses among the hits.

However, that hasn’t been the case under Ange Postecoglou, with Spurs having an impressive summer window, signing the likes of James Maddison and Micky van de Ven.

Tottenham players including James Maddison.

Roberto Soldado, Tanguy Ndombele, and Vincent Janssen are all examples of players who failed to live up to their hype, with the club failing to recoup the costs via their sales.

That said, there is one player who was sold by Mauricio Pochettino that the Lilywhites were able to nearly double their money on.

Nacer Chadli’s time at Spurs

In 2013, Nacer Chadli joined Spurs for £7m from FC Twente in the Netherlands, after scoring 18 goals and providing 11 assists in all competitions during the 2012/13 campaign.

The Belgian struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League initially, with his first goal coming in February 2014 against Newcastle United in a 4-0 win. That was the attacker's only goal in 24 league appearances that season.

However, Chadli was fantastic in the following season, playing as a left-winger in 35 top-flight games. Over those matches, the versatile attacker scored 11 goals and created five, his best-ever return in the league.

Unfortunately, in his final season at the club, the number 22 struggled to live up to the standards he set in the previous year, with the attack of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, and Heung-min Son limiting his starts to just ten.

Nacer Chadli’s career since leaving Spurs

Prior to his exit, Chadli’s performances were beginning to frustrate the Tottenham faithful, with journalist Dominic Booth far from a fan of his, stating: "When he's bad, he's woefully, dreadfully terrible.”

However, in the summer of 2016, the Belgium star moved to West Bromwich Albion for £13m in a club-record deal, which actually somehow saw Spurs profit from the deal.

His first season at West Brom saw Chadli net five goals in 31 matches, but his second campaign was disrupted by injuries, with him missing 28 games via three setbacks.

Luckily, the attacker returned just in time for the 2018 World Cup, where he starred for the Red Devils with a goal and an assist, which ultimately led to Monaco securing his services. His spell in France lasted just one season, with another hamstring strain keeping him out for 11 matches.

However, the 34-year-old is still playing today for KVC Westerlo back in Belgium, where he has failed to score all season and only provided two assists in 17 games.

It’s clear that selling Chadli for £13m all those years ago was a complete masterclass.
