Derby keen to sign exciting 19 y/o gem; they’ve watched him in action

Derby County continue to challenge for promotion this term and Paul Warne is now reportedly keen to bring a talented youngster to Pride Park in January.

Derby County prepare for congested fixture schedule…

Derby County were afforded a free weekend in League One due to being knocked out of the FA Cup in a replay against Crewe Alexandra, which in spite of the manner of the defeat has given Warne's men some needed respite ahead of an important run of festive fixtures.

Last time out, Derby County narrowly managed to best Port Vale at Vale Park last week by a single goal to nil, as a late effort from Tyreece John-Jules wrapped up an important three points to keep them in contention for promotion.

The Rams currently occupy sixth position in the English third tier, with 33 points from their opening 18 fixtures in the division. In a competitive picture in the context of who could potentially gain entry to the Championship, Warne will be keen for his side to continue their consistent form, which has yielded just one loss from their last seven matches across all competitions.

Next up for Derby County is a home tie against Fleetwood Town in the second round of the Football League Trophy before a return to league action at the weekend, where they will travel to east London to face off against Richie Wellens' Leyton Orient side.

Come the New Year, bringing in additional reinforcements will be key to achieving their ambitions of gaining promotion and it now appears that an exciting young star is on the radar at Pride Park, according to a fresh report.

Derby County line up Ben Krauhaus move

According to TEAMtalk, Derby County are keen on Bromley midfielder Ben Krauhaus, who they have watched in action this campaign to monitor his progress at the National League outfit. Nevertheless, competition to sign the 19-year-old is vast, with Cardiff City, Swansea City, Millwall, Bolton Wanderers and Charlton Athletic all interested in offering the youngster a chance to make his mark in the Football League.

Out of contract in the summer of 2024, it remains to be seen whether the Rams look to try and initiate a move for Krauhaus in January or whether they try and wait it out until the summer to land the versatile player on a free transfer.

Derby County manager Paul Warne.

Capable of operating as a central midfielder or on both flanks, Krauhaus has made 23 appearances in all competitions for Bromley this campaign, registering two goals in the process (Krauhaus statistics – Transfermarkt).

Looking to the future is always an important feature of any side's squad building and although Krauhaus possibly wouldn't arrive as a first-team-ready player, he could be someone to nurture into an important player over the coming years at Pride Park.

Derby County eyeing January move to sign "incredible" new striker

The Rams are in need of reinforcements in pursuit of promotion…

Newcastle weighing up shock January move for "fantastic" World Cup winner

With Nick Pope set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines and Newcastle United's injury woes continuing to pile up, Eddie Howe could turn to the January transfer window to welcome some much-needed reinforcements. The Magpies' squad depth has started to take its toll on their Premier League results, with their 3-0 defeat against Everton last time out at Goodison Park highlighting their struggles for all to see.

Those at St James' Park have arguably realised the consequences of failing to balance domestic and European football this season and must now rectify their error in January, starting with finding a replacement for Pope while he works on a return from injury.

Newcastle transfer news

Newcastle quickly saw the majority of their summer business fall apart in the early stages of the season when Sandro Tonali was hit with a 10-month ban following his breach of betting rules. Meanwhile, Harvey Barnes' injury has already seen him miss almost 20 games for the Magpies this season to make Newcastle's summer spending look the opposite of worthwhile. When January arrives, they must avoid a repeat of a window to forget and add some crucial additions for Howe in the race for top four.

Newcastle identify "world-class" star as potential Pope replacement

This could be an eye-catching addition by the Magpies.

ByHenry Jackson Dec 4, 2023

Among those additions could be Hugo Lloris. According to The Mirror, Newcastle are weighing up a second shock move for Lloris, who has been cast aside by Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur. The goalkeeper is reportedly rated highly by those at St James' Park and could come in to bolster Newcastle's options in the goalkeeping department behind Martin Dubravka, with internal talks being held. Lloris' current Spurs deal comes to an end next summer, meaning that the last chance for the North London club to cash in will come in the winter window.

Having failed to secure his signature in a loan deal on deadline day during the summer, Newcastle could now return for Lloris and finally welcome the World Cup winner to St James' Park.

"Fantastic" Lloris can add much-needed experience to Newcastle

As good as this current Newcastle side are, the current campaign is the first time that several players have played Champions League football. Their lack of experience, at some stage, may catch up to them, making Lloris' potential arrival crucial for the dressing room. The veteran goalkeeper has played on some of football's biggest stages and is a World Cup-winning captain, having lifted the legendary trophy with France in 2018.

Spurs captain Hugo Lloris

Even though Lloris is no longer in his prime at 36 years of age, he could still have plenty to offer both off the pitch and as a backup for Pope and Dubravka. During his best years, the Frenchman earned deserved praise from former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, who said during his Tottenham tenure:

"Hugo was fantastic. He deserves big praise from everyone. He showed his real level. You had the opportunity to see why Hugo is one of the best goalkeepers in the world."

Lloris is the type of player that would do Newcastle no harm by joining, with his experience an invaluable asset for a side making ventures into Europe for the first time together.

Sunderland’s "brilliant" talent has seen his value skyrocket by 4100%

Sunderland's misfiring recruitment strategy associated with their time in the Premier League is a world away from their affluent and astute approach in the present day.

The Black Cats' former scattergun approach in the transfer market culminated in their rapid drop into League One, consistently picking up flops – like Jack Rodwell and Didier Ndong – instead of being measured and smart with their recruitment.

Whilst that strategy was a huge factor in their downfall, their approach of scouring leagues across Britain for the best young talent has contributed to their recent rise.

Their promotion back to the Championship in 2022 and their play-off finish last term was the result of successful recruitment.

Sunderland now target talented youngsters, predominantly aged 23 and under, who have the potential to become Premier League stars.

Jack Clarke

The above approach has seen them bring in Jack Clarke, whose excellent displays have brought top-flight attention, while the performances of right-back Trai Hume have slipped under the radar.

The fee Sunderland paid for Trai Hume

Hume became Sunderland's first signing of 2022, arriving from Danske Bank Premiership outfit Linfield FC for a fee in the region of £150k.

The then 19-year-old enjoyed an impressive 2021/22 campaign, scoring three goals and supplying two assists in 17 appearances under the management of former Black Cats striker David Healy.

Despite his tender age, Hume had racked up over 50 senior appearances in Northern Ireland, including outings in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League qualifying stages.

With some impressive pedigree under his belt, the versatile defender – who can operate as a midfielder or centre-back – would soon add a League One promotion to his list of accolades.

Whilst he would only feature three times for Sunderland in the second half of that campaign, the appointment of Tony Mowbray would prove to be the catalyst for his development.

Known for his ability to improve young players, Hume played a pivotal role in the Black Cats' charge towards the play-offs last season, making 34 appearances across all competitions.

Having established himself as a regular fixture in the side, the 5 foot 10 ace has since become one of the best in his position this term.

Trai Hume's season in numbers

Although his teammate Clarke will take the plaudits for scoring nine goals in 16 Championship appearances, Hume's impact from a defensive point of view has been just as important.

The 21-year-old, who starred in his nation's 2-0 win against Denmark on Monday night, has been a revelation for club and country this term.

In that impressive victory over the Danes, Hume put in a monstrous defensive display, making six tackles, winning eight of his ten ground duels, four of his seven aerial duels and two clearances, as per Sofascore.

It's that level of performance on the international stage that Sunderland supporters have become accustomed to seeing throughout this campaign.

Described by his defensive partner Daniel Ballard as "brilliant" and someone who "loves a tackle", Hume has exemplified his ferocity in one-on-one situations by ranking in the top 4% against his positional peers in the Championship for tackles, top 16% for interceptions and top 9% for aerials won, as per FBref.

The ferocious defender is also exquisite in possession, marauding into midfield to create overloads down the flank by impressing with his superb passing range, placing within the top 13% for pass completion and top 23% for passes into the final third.

Whilst Hume's importance to Sunderland shot up, so has his value, and this is showcased by Football Transfers, who value him at €7.4M (£6.4m) currently.

This means his transfer value has skyrocketed by a whopping 4100% in nearly two years since joining for an initial £150k from Linfield.

If he continues his upward trajectory – like his teammate Clarke – he looks destined to play Premier League football in the near future.

Yasir Shah fastest to 200 Test wickets, breaks 82-year-old record

The legspinner took just 33 Tests to reach the landmark as compared to Clarrie Grimmett’s 36

Osman Samiuddin06-Dec-20182:52

Is Yasir better than Ashwin and Lyon?

On the fourth morning of the final Test in Abu Dhabi against New Zealand, Yasir Shah did not merely break an 82-year-old record, he smashed it.By dismissing William Somerville roughly half an hour into the morning, he picked up his 200th Test wicket in just his 33rd Test. That breaks the record for the fastest to 200 Test wickets, so long held by another legspinner, Clarrie Grimmett who reached the mark in his 36th Test. The wicket came in trademark Yasir style, the key to it the pace at which it was bowled, breaking a little but hurrying onto Somerville’s pads. The batsmen had a discussion, but ultimately decided not to take a review.By then Yasir had already been engulfed by his team-mates, performing the in the process of acknowledging the landmark. As has been the case with so many of Pakistan’s greatest moments in the UAE, barely a handful of people were present at the ground to witness it.”When I started I never dreamed that I would get this record,” Yasir later said. “I was just playing cricket at the time and I didn’t even think I could play for Pakistan.”I thank Allah for this success. It was my dream to take 200 wickets and it came true today. I would like to dedicate the world record to my mother.”Given his form in this series it was inevitable Yasir would break the record at some point during the Test. And on the first day it looked as if he would have it wrapped by the afternoon. He took three quick wickets in the hour before lunch as New Zealand slipped from 70 for 1 to 72 for 4. But he was to pick up no more in that innings, Bilal Asif instead ending up with a five-for.Yasir Shah bathed in the warm glow of sunset•Getty ImagesAlready his 27th wicket of the series, with more batsmen to come, he could also break another Pakistan record, for most wickets in a three-Test series. That has been held by another legspinner, Abdul Qadir who took 30 wickets against England in 1987-88.This series has been an especially rich one for Yasir, and a welcome return to the wickets after an unusually quiet start to the season. Returning from a hip injury that forced him to miss the tour of Ireland and England earlier this year, Yasir looked understandably rusty against Australia last month. A relatively small haul of eight wickets in two Tests included the first time had gone wicketless in an innings in the UAE.But he has looked like the old Yasir again at times in this series and indeed in the second Test in Dubai, bowled as good a spell as he has ever bowled. He ended with 14 wickets in the Test, only the second Pakistani to take as many, after Imran Khan.As well as being the quickest to 200, Yasir was the joint second-fastest to 100 Test wickets (in 17 Tests) and the fastest Pakistani to 50 Test wickets (in nine Tests).

West Indies crumble against spin after Bangladesh rack up 508

After keeping West Indies on the field for most of the first two days to score 508 runs in their first innings, Bangladesh didn’t allow any let-ups with the ball. Mehidy Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan took five wickets in the first 12 overs of the visitors’ reply, recording a first in Test history in the process, as the first five batsmen were all bowled to spinners.Mehidy took three wickets while Shakib took the other two to fall in a dominant day for the home side. From start to finish on day two, Bangladesh made all the running, culminating in a gasping last hour and 40 minutes that ended with West Indies on 75 for 5.Kraigg Brathwaite has had a torrid time in this tour so far, this time Shakib Al Hasan’s arm-ball cutting between his bat and pad to hand him a duck. Mehidy did a similar thing to Kieran Powell, using the round-the-wicket angle to get through his bat and pad.Things turned from bad to worse for West Indies in the ninth over when Sunil Ambris missed a full Shakib delivery with an ambitious lofted drive, but he was nowhere near the pitch of the ball. Roston Chase played down the wrong line to a Mehidy delivery that spun past his forward prod.In Mehidy’s next over, West Indies slipped to 29 for 5, the lowest score against Bangladesh at five wickets down, when Shai Hope was completely undone by one that kept very low.Shimron Hetmyer and Shane Dowrich, who batted well in the Chattogram Test too, salvaged the visitors in a 46-run stand for the unbroken sixth wicket. It was the only respite on a day when nothing really went their way.For most of the day, it was Mahmudullah’s sturdy 136 that held Bangladesh together. He lasted six hours and 16 minutes at the crease, which took the home side through some crucial phases from the first to the second afternoon. Shadman Islam had earlier done the initial hard work through his impressive 76 on the first day, but after he and Mushfiqur fell in a short span, Mahmudullah dug deep.He added 111 runs for the sixth wicket with Shakib who went on a boundary-spree early on the second morning, hitting five of his six fours. He made 80 off 139 balls before giving gully a straightforward catch off Kemar Roach. Liton Das followed in Shakib’s footsteps, attacking the West Indies bowlers in a first session in which Bangladesh added 128 runs in 25 overs.Liton, who made 54 off 62 balls with eight fours and a six, fell soon after the lunch break, and was followed by Mehidy Hasan back to the dressing room. Mahmudullah then took 30 balls to get through the nineties and into his century, but it was a crucial phase in which he and Taijul added 56 runs in 20.5 overs.Taijul lasted 91 minutes before getting caught behind off Kraigg Brathwaite, who had earlier bowled Liton, before Nayeem Hasan and Mahmudullah frustrated West Indies for a further 9.2 overs in their tenth-wicket stand. For the visitors, Kemar Roach, Devendra Bsihoo, Warrican and Brathwaite took two wickets each while there was one each for Shermon Lewis and Roston Chase.

Neuer has cemented his position as a true legend of the game during his career, winning the World Cup with Germany and countless titles with Bayern Munich. The goalkeeper has also changed the perception of the role of goalkeeper due to his ability with the ball at his feet and willingness to come far off his line, bringing the term 'sweeper-keeper' into the mainstream.

Gomez, who played alongside Neuer for both club and country, has piled praise on the goalkeeper and claimed he has had as big an influence on modern football as Lionel Messi. The Argentine superstar is widely considered to be the greatest player to ever grace the game and is currently plying his trade in the MLS with Inter Miami, where he has raised the profile of the league and attracted record crowds.

WHAT GOMEZ SAID

Former Germany international Gomez told 's 'Phrasenmäher' podcast: "I would put Manuel Neuer on par with Messi in terms of importance for the game. I don't even know if we are all aware of what we experienced with a goalkeeper who revolutionized the entire game. Only in 20 years will we realize this. He is the goalkeeper who made everyone realize that feet are as important as hands. The way he masters both is incredible."

Fabrizio Romano drops update on future of "battleship" wanted by Newcastle

Newcastle United have been handed a potential boost in their efforts to sign a defensive "battleship", according to a fresh claim from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Newcastle want January signings

The Magpies are expected to be in the market for new additions when the January transfer window opens next month, following a dreadful season in the injury department.

It has become almost laughable how many important players Eddie Howe is having to make do without, with Nick Pope's serious shoulder injury in the 1-0 win over Manchester United the latest major setback. He could now be sidelined for as long as four months, which could have a big impact on the season.

On top of all the injury concerns, Sandro Tonali's time as a Newcastle player has also got off to a disastrous start, with the Italian suspended for 10 months for breaching betting rules, bringing an end to his season before it had barely got underway.

While midfield targets seem to be on the cards for the Magpies, which is understandable given the lack of depth there after Tonali's ban, Howe could look to make defensive signings, too, not least because key centre-back Sven Botman has found himself in and out of the team this season.

Genoa central defender Radu Dragusin has emerged as a transfer target for Newcastle, while Sporting CP ace Goncalo Inacio is another who could head to St James' Park.

Jonathan Tah transfer update

Speaking to Caught Offside, Romano claimed that Newcastle transfer target Jonathan Tah could move to the Premier League in 2024, having been linked with the Magpies as recently as the middle of last month.

Jonathan Tah

"I’d keep an eye on Premier League clubs for Jonathan Tah. He’s under contract until 2025 at Bayer and sources tell me he could leave in 2024. He’s doing great; I can’t share info on precise club yet but there’s interest from Premier League."

Tah could be exactly what Newcastle are looking for at the heart of their defence, although it remains to be seen if a January move could happen, or if a switch to St James' Park may take place next summer instead.

The German is enjoying an excellent spell at Bayer Leverkusen currently, proving to be a hugely important player for Xabi Alonso's side and helping them top the Bundesliga, sitting three points clear of Bayern Munich. Tah's statistics highlight how much he is flourishing this season.

At 27, he is at a great age to join Newcastle and could make an immediate difference, given the experience he has, but there is also no reason why he shouldn't remain in his prime for the next four or five years. Tah has even been hailed as a "a real battleship" of a defender by Christoph Kramer in the past, and he could be the dominant presence that Howe needs moving forward, should he leave Leverkusen.

Arteta could bench Jorginho to unleash "phenomenal" Arsenal dynamo

Arsenal are back in action this afternoon, as Mikel Arteta’s side host Burnley at the Emirates Stadium in the bid to return to winning ways in the Premier League.

Last time out the Gunners’ unbeaten start to the league campaign ended at the hands of Newcastle United, as the Magpies won 1-0 at St James’ Park in controversial fashion following a second-half strike from Anthony Gordon.

Vincent Kompany’s side pose a contrasting challenge to that of last week’s duel, as the Clarets arrive in the capital with just four points, sitting 19th in the table with only one win to their name so far.

Despite Arsenal being the favourites on paper, the visitors will be desperate for a result this afternoon, reinforcing the importance of Arteta’s side returning to their best in order to rebuild the momentum.

Arsenal team news vs Burnley

After beating Sevilla midweek in the Champions League at the Emirates, the Gunners were struck with more injury woes to add to their currently worrying collection.

In the 85th minute, goal scorer Bukayo Saka was forced to withdraw with a knock, which could leave him sidelined for the clash against Burnley this afternoon.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Arteta shared that the Englishman was in “quite a lot of pain” when he exited the field on Wednesday, adding that the forward did not train on Thursday.

gabriel-martinelli-bukayo-saka-arsenal-opinion

On the topic of injury, the boss confirmed that Jurrien Timber, Gabriel Jesus, Thomas Partey and Emile Smith-Rowe will not be in contention this afternoon, while sharing that Martin Odegaard is “racing against the clock” to find match fitness after a hip injury.

With a host of key players at risk of not playing against Burnley, Arteta will have some thinking to do ahead of selecting his most appropriate XI to face the clarets, with one name having a strong claim to secure minutes.

The stats that suggest Fabio Vieira should start against Burnley

In the absence of Odegaard and Partey, a midfield pairing of Kai Havertz and Jorginho has been summoned by the manager to questionable effect, giving Fabio Vieira a shout to fight for game time.

With the captain out of action, the Gunners need to identify an assured creative back-up, which the Portuguese whiz can provide when deployed in his favoured number ten role.

Once lauded as “phenomenal” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Vieira has prevailed as one of the top creators in Europe for his form over the past year, averaging a staggering 0.54 assists per 90 to place him in the top 1% of midfielders in that area, via FBref.

The former Porto maestro also averages 1.72 key passes per 90, a far greater average than Jorginho who has averaged only 0.56 per 90 over the past year.

fabio-vieira-arsenal

While the Italian brings experience, with all respect to Burnley, now could be the perfect opportunity for Arteta to unleash Vieira in the bid to allow him to show his worth at a time of need for an established playmaker in midfield.

There are plenty of decisions for the manager to make ahead of the clash, with the 23-year-old one of those crying out for minutes this season.

Mehidy, Soumya, Tamim give Bangladesh series win

The spinner picked up 4 for 29 before the two batsmen made short work of the 199 chase

The Report by Mohammad Isam in Sylhet14-Dec-2018

Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar fist-bump each other•Getty Images

Soumya Sarkar and Tamim Iqbal chose the scenic route to Bangladesh’s eight-wicket win over West Indies in Sylhet to clinch the three-match ODI series 2-1. Soumya’s attacking 80 was complemented by Tamim’s unbeaten 81, which came after Mehidy Hasan dipped his offbreaks to perfection in a career-best bowling performance. It was Bangladesh’s eighth bilateral series win (out of 12) since the 2015 World Cup, with two of those now coming against West Indies this year. Shai Hope’s unbeaten century was West Indies’ only moment of happiness as the visitors lost both Tests and ODI series in Bangladesh, a first for any major side touring the country.Bangladesh first sparked a batting collapse during the middle overs as West Indies lost three wickets for three runs in 22 balls. They slipped from 96 for 2 in the 23rd over to 99 for 5 in the 26th. Hope, who made an unbeaten 108 playing the full 50 overs, had to rely on the lower order to reach his fourth ODI hundred, but it was hardly going to take the control out of Bangladesh’s grip.Tamim then did what an experienced batsman should do in a 199 chase. He batted sensibly, while Liton Das and Soumya blasted the bowlers at the other end. At times, Tamim too drove down the ground and flicked off his pads for fours but he largely focused on collecting singles.Liton’s punches through cover and mid-off fetched him four of his five fours. But his impulsive strokeplay – this time a swipe across the line that was caught at mid-on – cut short his stay at the crease, for a 33-ball 23.Soumya, who had started off with a sublime on-drive off Keemo Paul, was otherwise devastating against spin. He lifted Marlon Samuels, Fabien Allen and Devendra Bishoo for five sixes.Samuels was hit over midwicket and long-off, while the two off Allen were sent high over the midwicket boundary. In the 34th over of the innings, he launched Bishoo over cover for his fifth six, before striking him for two fours to finish off the over. Paul eventually got him for an 81-ball 80, ending the 131-run second-wicket stand.Mushfiqur Rahim struck two fours and an upper-cut six before Tamim’s two fours off Rovman Powell in the 39th over got Bangladesh to the win. But the foundation of this win was laid down when Mohammad Saifuddin sparked the collapse with Samuels driving aimlessly at an offcutter, to be bowled for 19. It ended a promising 39-run third-wicket stand between Samuels and Hope before Mehidy got into the act.Having already removed Chandrapaul Hemraj and Darren Bravo, Mehidy dismissed Shimron Hetmyer for the sixth time in seven innings on this tour, this time lbw for a duck. It ended a poor ODI series for Hetmyer who was sparkling in the Test series. Powell’s wicket was his fourth, caught behind to a delivery that he expected to turn. Powell made just 16 runs in the series, making it a dreadful subcontinent tour on which he scored 77 runs in eight innings at an average 9.62.Shakib Al Hasan then removed Roston Chase and Allen, both caught in the deep. Chase mis-hit one to long-off, while Mohammad Mithun dived forward at deep midwicket to complete Allen’s catch.Hope meanwhile stood firm at the other end, having carried the confidence from his unbeaten 146 in the second game, which led to a hard-fought four-wicket win. He struck four boundaries through the covers, one through midwicket and two down the ground.Hope moved from 94 to his hundred with a straight six off Shakib. All the Bangladesh players shook hands with him at the end of the West Indies innings, while the Sylhet crowd was generous in applaud. But all the cheers for the rest of the day went to the homeboys.
