Man City chiefs pushing to enter contract talks with “ridiculous” favourite

Manchester City chiefs are looking to open talks to discuss a new-look contract for one of their first-team favourites, according to a fresh report that has emerged.

Man City contract latest

In recent months, Bernardo Silva and Kyle Walker have both committed to their futures by putting pen to paper on fresh deals, and the club are going to have to decide what they are doing about another player who will soon be out of contract.

The Sky Blues have Scott Carson approaching the expiration of his terms at the end of the season (Man City contracts), so once his situation has been sorted, Pep Guardiola will be able to turn his attention towards some of his more regular features.

Etihad Stadium striker Erling Haaland has firmly established himself as the Spaniard’s overall best-performing player so far this season with a match rating of 7.67 (WhoScored – Man City statistics), and this impressive form has already been attracting interest from outside of the Premier League.

The Norway international has emerged as a target for Real Madrid and Barcelona in La Liga, and the hierarchy want to arrange a meeting with him and his camp to see what can be done about his contract so that the 23-year-old doesn’t consider leaving.

Man City pushing for negotiations with Erling Haaland

According to 90min, Man City want to speak to Haaland and his management to see whether anything can be negotiated to make both parties happy with the terms of his contract.

"Manchester City are continuing to push for talks with Erling Haaland's representatives over a new contract, 90min understands.

"90min understands that the clauses written into Haaland's contract do not become active until 2025 – some were removed entirely when Pep Guardiola extended his own contract – and City are willing to soften their stance and discuss a new deal that will increase the release clause's value, rather than remove it entirely as was previously hoped."

Haaland's outstanding record at the Etihad

During his time at Man City, Haaland has been nothing short of incredible, having posted an unbelievable 82 contributions – 69 goals and 13 assists – in just 71 appearances (Transfermarkt – Haaland statistics), with his prolific form in the final third having seen him dubbed “ridiculous” by journalist Josh Bunting.

Standing at 6 foot 4, Guardiola’s £375k-per-week colossus (Man City salaries), has also recorded 42 shots over the course of the current campaign, which is unsurprisingly more than any other of his fellow teammates (FBRef – Man City statistics), representing his desire to constantly find the back of the net compared to his peers.

Furthermore, Haaland has a fantastic winning mentality which has so far helped him win four trophies during his time at the club, not to mention that he was recently named UEFA’s Best Player in Europe, so if not already obvious, he has shown what an integral member of the squad he is and one that the boss needs to retain at all costs.

West Ham insider says "amazing" deal on table for gem, talks now ongoing

West Ham United have had an up and down start to the campaign under David Moyes and are now reportedly keen to wrap up a new contract for an academy gem.

West Ham's striker options struggle

West Ham are always in the hunt to improve their squad and January looks as if it will continue to be a busy period for the Hammers, who already welcomed the additions of James Ward-Prowse, Mohammed Kudus, Edson Alvarez, Andy Irving and Konstantinos Mavropanos in the summer transfer window.

One recurring rumour that never really seems to end at the London Stadium is the Hammers' hunt for a new striking addition, amid speculation that West Ham boss Moyes may look to upgrade on Michail Antonio if the right option arrives on the market. According to Football London, Chelsea's ongoing pursuit of Napoli poacher Victor Osimhen could make room for Armando Broja to leave the club and West Ham could reportedly reignite their interest in the Albania international.

Alongside Antonio, veteran striker Danny Ings and youngster Divin Mubama are Moyes' only recognised strikers at the London Stadium. Broja's profile and physicality could offer a handy alternative to the Scot if any deal were to materialise in the near future.

Antonio, Ings and Mubama have scored two goals between them this campaign, making the centre-forward position an area with potential room for improvement come the New Year (West Ham squad statistics – Transfermarkt).

Jarrod Bowen and the aforementioned Kudus have also improvised in a central striking role this term; however, bringing in a natural number nine would alleviate some of their goalscoring concerns, given that they have scored the joint second-fewest goals in the top half of the Premier League table across 2023/24, level with Chelsea and only bettering Manchester United.

Now, reports suggest that West Ham now have designs on wrapping up an important internal deal at the London Stadium sooner rather than later.

Divin Mubama contract update

As per The West Ham Way, popular Irons insider EXWHUEmployee has revealed that West Ham are keen to get a contract extension over the line for 19-year-old striker Mubama, who is set to be out of contract at the London Stadium in the summer of 2024.

EXWHUEmployee told the outlet: "West Ham started the talks with Mubuma and his team 12 months ago. The club absolutely want him to stay, but as we know, we do adopt a very strict wage structure policy. It must be said though that Declan Rice played many many games for the club on a youth wage, earning his right to then seek higher wages later in his career – something I think gets forgotten.

West Ham striker Divin Mubama.

"Also, agents do not help the situation. The rules around football agents have changed so that the best way for them now to earn directly, is through their clients moving around. So sometimes its hard to know if they have the players best interest at heart.

"Now I have been told that the offer on the table is ‘amazing’, although this is from the clubs side. Now clearly the Mubama camp doesn’t feel that way, otherwise it would have been signed."

Ensuring talented youngsters commit their future to West Ham will be an important priority for everyone connected with the club; however, it looks like we will need to wait and see regarding Mubama's next career steps.

HELERSON:
– 3 jogos pelo Botafogo
– Nenhuma partida em 2020 (relacionado uma vez)

WESLEY:
– 30 jogos em 2020
– Relacionado uma vez para o profissional

CÍCERO:
– 13 jogos em 2020

Nick Compton announces retirement from cricket

Nick Compton was capped 16 times in Tests for England, playing his part in memorable series wins in India and South Africa

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Oct-2018Former England opener Nick Compton has announced his retirement from the game. Compton, 35, did not feature for Middlesex during the 2018 season – which was also his benefit year – but will remain working for the club in an ambassadorial role.Compton played 16 Tests for England, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Denis. He was Alastair Cook’s first opening partner after the retirement of Andrew Strauss in 2012, and played his part in memorable series wins in India and South Africa. His last cap came during the summer of 2016, a season which ended with Middlesex lifting the County Championship for the first time since 1993.”After almost two decades of professional cricket, I am announcing my retirement from the game I love so much,” Compton said. “It has been a privilege to play first-class cricket for Middlesex, Somerset, and the MCC.”Of course, the pinnacle of my career was following in my grandfather Denis Compton’s footsteps, having achieved my dream of playing and winning Test series for England. I am particularly proud of my successful opening partnership with Alastair Cook and our series victory in India, the first time in 28 years an England team had won in India.”In contrast to his famously dashing grandfather, Nick Compton was a dogged top-order accumulator who carved out a reputation for making hard runs.Having started out at Middlesex, the club closely associated with his family, Compton moved to Somerset in 2010. It was there he found the form that would win him England recognition; in 2012, he scored 1494 runs at 99.60, narrowly failing to become the ninth man in history to score 1000 first-class runs before the end of May.He made his international debut in Ahmedabad that winter and was part of the England side that came from behind to win 2-1 in India. Compton scored hundreds in Dunedin and Wellington on England’s next tour, a 0-0 draw with New Zealand, but lost his place ahead of the 2013 Ashes despite an opening partnership with Cook that averaged 57.93.A second coming in 2015 saw him score 85 and 49 at No. 3 as England won in Durban on the way to a 2-1 series victory, but Compton only played three more Tests, making his final outing against Sri Lanka at Lord’s.”There have been some challenges that I have had to confront, but in spite of these I feel incredibly fortunate to have had this career of mine,” he said. “For one, being named one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year in the 150th Anniversary Edition [in 2013] alongside both my cricketing hero Jacques Kallis, and my school friend Hashim Amla.”Other highlights include being chosen as PCA Player of the Year by my peers after coming so close to being the first cricketer for 25 years to score 1000 runs before the end of May is another, up there with making my Test debut in India and receiving my cap from England legend Graham Gooch.”I treasure the 16 Test matches I played for England, especially my back-to-back Test hundreds which I scored in New Zealand. On the domestic front, what a team I played in at Somerset. And winning the County Championship at Lord’s on the final day of the 2016 season for Middlesex provided all involved with an experience that we will savour for the rest of our lives.”In all, Compton scored more than 12,000 first-class runs at an average of 40.42, the last of his 27 hundreds coming for Sri Lanka Ports Authority during a spell playing Sri Lankan domestic cricket in February. He had already begun to explore options for his post-playing career, working as an analyst during the summer for Sky and ESPNcricinfo. “I look forward to pursuing my other interests, particularly in the media and photography as well as working on a few business ventures,” he said.Middlesex’s chief executive, Richard Goatley, added: “It is a sad day for us that Nick Compton has retired from professional cricket. Nick has been a very special servant to the club, culminating in his key role in the Championship winning success of 2016.”Nick is highly valued by Middlesex Cricket and we are delighted that he will remain with the club in an ambassadorial role. We welcome his all-round ability, and want him to add further value by helping to inspire our future success in an off the field capacity.”He has contributed effectively towards the club’s off-field work in the past, both with our senior leadership team and the commercial team at Lord’s, and we look forward to extending that work in the future. Nick Compton will always be welcome at Lord’s.”

Erik ten Hag explains why Man Utd's defending doesn't worry him despite Red Devils conceding over 30 shots in Brentford draw

Erik ten Hag remains unperturbed by Manchester United's defensive woes as he claimed he is more worried about results.

United conceded 31 shots against Brentford on Saturday as the home team at Gtech Stadium completely dominated them. The Bees hit the woodwork thrice while Andre Onana made quite a few quality saves to ensure that the visitors walked away with at least a point.

However, Red Devils boss Ten Hag claimed after the game that he was not too concerned about his team's defensive woes, although he admitted that Thomas Frank's side was the better team on the pitch.

WHAT ERIK TEN HAG SAID

At the post-match press conference, when the Dutch manager was asked if he was concerned about his team's defensive problems, he replied, "As long as we get results, no. I explained it once more, we defended low at times and because Brentford are very direct we lost many many second balls and we had to defend the box. We had a great goalkeeper, he was brilliant tonight, we have to say that also. Our results are quite consistent from January on but we concede shots, but we don't concede so many goals.

"We didn't deserve to win but we showed resilience all through the game. But in points of aggression, Brentford were better. We should show more passion and desire in many moments in the game. But when you are winning you should bring it over the line."

He added, "You can never compare such levels and performances [to their 4-3 win against Liverpool] but also when you don't play well you still have to win – we did it almost. That is my big disappointment that we didn't bring it over the line. We didn't play well but there was spirit, there was fight, but not enough. It was enough to get the goal, 1-0, and before that, we had a big chance for Rasmus Hojlund. We have many senior players, we should all stand up and take responsibility for this."

GettyWHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?

Bruno Fernandes and Co. will be next seen in action in the Premier League on Thursday as they take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. It is a must-win game for the club if they want to remain in the hunt for a top-four spot.

Everton could land their own Declan Rice by signing £26m "destroyer"

Everton's recent transfer dealings have proven to be somewhat of a success, working against the notion that the Toffees only sign duds that have called Goodison Park home for a short period of time before packing their bags after the move completely flops.

Abdoulaye Doucoure's addition to the ranks back in 2020 has proven to be an inspired bit of business, the ex-Watford man now a consistent performer for the Merseyside club with the 30-year-old midfielder even popping up with three goals in the Premier League this season.

Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure

Moreover, his regular partner in the centre of the park in James Garner has also been a shrewd acquisition – leaving behind boyhood club Manchester United last year for a move to the nearby Toffees, slotting into the starting lineup now more times than not at the expense of an ageing Idrissa Gueye.

Even with the central midfielders at Goodison performing valiantly at this moment in time, Sean Dyche could well be eyeing up young Brazilian sensation Gabriel Moscardo as another holding midfield option, with a whole host of clubs queuing up to tussle for the 18-year-old's services alongside the Blues.

Everton transfers latest

The current Corinthians man is likely to be subject to manic interest from a plethora of suitors this coming January, the teenager linked with moves to Chelsea, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Fulham and more, according to TEAMTalk.

As the report noted, Everton are also in pursuit of the Brazil U23 international, stating that the Toffees are monitoring the youngster's progress amid the desire to raid South America for some 'clever signings' in the New Year.

Everton manager Sean Dyche.

If they were to land this highly rated teenager – who could command a fee of £26m – come January, Dyche could have his very own Declan Rice potentially, with Moscardo compared to the Arsenal star of late – as per GOAL's Krishan Davis.

How Gabriel Moscardo compares to Declan Rice

Referred to as a "destroyer" by scout Ben Mattinson when describing Moscardo's style of play, the Brazilian's other varied attributes bear striking similarities also to the former West Ham United skipper, with the aforementioned Davis writing last month:

'Nominally a defensive midfielder who compliments his fine reading of the game by breaking the lines with lung-busting forward runs with the ball at his feet, the parallels are clear to see with Arsenal and England star Rice.'

The Corinthians' number 44 can dominate games centrally, confident with the ball at his feet going forward whilst also unafraid to launch himself into a tackle if necessary – as displayed by his five yellow cards already this campaign from just 15 league matches, a fierce 'destroyer' in the middle of the pitch.

Gabriel-moscardo-chelsea

Over the last year for his Brazilian employers, Moscardo has averaged 3.08 tackles per 90 minutes whilst also carrying out further defensive work 2.76 blocks per match to shore up his side as an anchor-like figure, via FBRef.

It's his forays forward however that draw the most direct comparisons to Rice, the former Hammers man is well-known for his assuredness to travel with the ball in tight areas coming out from the back – completing an average of 2.22 progressive carries per match over the last year for both West Ham and the Gunners.

The 18-year-old is so highly thought of as his statistics in the same area mirror the formidable Arsenal man, albeit Moscardo is playing in his native Brazil and not in the intense Premier League.

He could however be ready for a top-flight move imminently if he continues to excel with Corinthians, averaging 1.80 successful take-ons each game over the last 365 days for the South American giants, whilst coming in at a lesser but still impressive 1.69 progressive carries compared to his experienced counterpart.

It looks ever more likely that Moscardo will be upping and leaving his native Brazil in January – and with potential added investment from 777 Partners – Everton will hope they can shock everyone in landing the young midfielder ahead of major interest from top clubs.

"We didn’t expect" – Spurs duo could form "best" new partnership under Ange

A new Tottenham Hotspur partnership may be brewing under Ange Postecoglou, one that could even match the deadly duos of James Maddison/Son Heung-min and Micky van de Ven/Cristian Romero.

Spurs player ratings 2023/2024

Pretty much every member of the first team has played a major role in Spurs' climb to the top of the table. Winning eight out of a possible 10 league games while remaining unbeaten – the best start made by any new manager in Premier League history – Postecoglou has guided the north Londoners through an absolutely rip-roaring first two months of the campaign.

In terms of standouts, it's hard to ignore a select few, with Son and Maddison's form being praised. The pair have formed an incredible understanding in the forward areas; grabbing a combined total of 11 goals and six assists in the top flight alone so far. Maddison is looking like one of the bargains of the summer transfer window after a £40 million move from Leicester City, while Son is rediscovering his very best after a regrettable 2022/2023.

james-maddison-tottenham-hotspur-ange-postecoglou-premier-league-preview-luton-giovani-lo-celso

Meanwhile, the defensive partnership of Romero and van de Ven has been pivotal. The latter has just joined Spurs from Wolfsburg but already looks like he's been donning Lilywhite for far longer. Speaking on his YouTube channel this week, TNT Sports pundit Rio Ferdinand praised the pair for what has been an excellent start to this new season.

“Romero and Micky van de Ven are arguably the best pairing at the moment in central defence in the Premier League on form. They’ve been immense," said Ferdinand on van de Ven and Romero.

“This Micky van de Ven, bro, he is the real deal. He’s the real deal. I saw his debut the other day for Holland. I’ve seen him right up close twice this season. And he looks supremely comfortable for a young centre-back that’s come into a new league. So watch this space for this kid.”

It would seem Postecoglou is spoiled for choice when it comes to understandings all over the park, but journalist Dean Jones believes a new partnership could emerge.

Bentancur and Bissouma could form best Spurs partnership

Uruguay midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur returned from his long-term injury against Crystal Palace in what was a big, big boost for Spurs. Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have been thriving as part of Postecoglou's new-look, dual midfield pivot, but Jones believes both Bentancur and Bissouma may thrive together for Spurs.

Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma.

“I think when you look at van de Ven and Romero, Tottenham already have an argument to say that they've got the best defensive pairing in the league," said Jones to GiveMeSport.

"If Bentancur and Bissouma can keep going this season across the entire campaign, I think they can put up a fight and say they’ve got one of the best midfield partnerships around as well. This was a situation we didn't expect to see. Still, even if we throw Pape Matar Sarr into this conversation, the revival and the way that these guys have been able to progress under Postecoglou has been superb. The ceiling has just been lifted.”

"I don't want people to use the word gypsy as a racist insult," Sanchez Flores said. "Some of the crowd think they can come to a game and say whatever they like. We're workers who need to be respected in the work space. I think it's abhorrent."
