Wolves Could Sign Talented "Prospect" In £17m Swoop

Wolverhampton Wanderers are in pursuit for a goalscorer this summer, with Sporting CP forward Youssef Chermiti rising as a potential grab.

Julen Lopetegui must recruit a competent striker in the transfer window, to avoid a repeat of last season’s record of being the lowest-scorers in the Premier League.

Could Youssef Chermiti sign for Wolves?

As reported by Portuguese outlet Record, Wolves hold an interest in Chermiti, who graduated from the club’s academy last campaign.

The report claims that scouts were present in Sporting’s pre-season game against Genk, amid rumours of the Old Gold’s curiosities over the striker.

Despite having a contract running until 2027 with a release clause believed to be in the region of €80m (£69m), the teenager could leave for a figure of €20m (£17m) this summer according to the report.

How good is Youssef Chermiti?

After rising through the ranks at Sporting, the 19-year-old finally made the step from the club’s B team to the first team in January.

Following his promotion, the centre-forward was handed a refreshed contract in February after showcasing just what he can do if given a licence to lead the line.

In his first three starts, the teen scored two goals and registered an assist, getting his senior career off to a bang in Liga Portugal.

Donning a dominating 6 foot 4 frame, the striker could be the ideal addition to the squad at Molineux, providing far more than just an aerial threat.

Described as a “superb prospect” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the forward could be the perfect presence to unlock Wolves’ attack, after the side managed to score just 31 goals in 38 games last term.

A "very interesting" talent hungry to achieve, according to Kulig, the 19-year-old could be introduced as the target man in the Midlands, particularly following the departure of striker Raul Jimenez.

While the teenager is still a name people are learning in Europe, one player in Wolverhampton is already familiar with his ability, with Matheus Nunes being his former teammate at Sporting.

Youssef-chermiti-sporting

Signed from Lisbon by Wolves last summer, the attacking midfielder is yet to show his full potential at Molineux, however has shown glimpses of just the threat he could be in the Premier League.

For Nunes, Chermiti could be the ideal player for him to unearth his creative ability in England, in a talent that could suit his approach to playmaking.

In Portugal, the 24-year-old averaged 4.37 final third passes compared to his 2.55 per 90 in the Premier League last season, via FBref, suggesting that there is much more of his game to unlock in the Midlands.

In having a prominent figure to target in the final third through Chermiti, the Portuguese gem could elevate his game in playing with a talent he is familiar with.

As per The Scouting App, the teenager is described as a ‘pure striker’, with strengths in his physicality and ‘explosiveness’, proposing that he could be an added streak of much-needed energy up-front for Wolves.

The youngster's enthusiasm and ‘eccentricity’, as credited by The Scouting App, could prompt the likes of Nunes to explore areas of his creative game more confidently, as he continues to adapt in the English top tier.

Aston Villa: Emery has to pay above "odds" to sign "breakthrough" star

Aston Villa will need to pay 'over the odds' to land Nottingham Forest striker Brennan Johnson in this transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Is Brennan Johnson swapping Nottingham Forest for Aston Villa?

According to The Daily Mail, Aston Villa are 'exploring' a move for Wales international Johnson this summer and his current employers would be open to selling him in order to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

The report states that a figure of £40 million could be enough to land the £30k-a-week earner; however, Brentford are also keen on striking a deal to bring Johnson to west London.

Last term, the 22-year-old enjoyed a productive campaign for the Tricky Trees as they staved off the threat of relegation from the English top flight, notching ten goals and three assists in 48 appearances across all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

Of course, Johnson is not the only player that Unai Emery is keen on to bolster his ranks in the final third, with Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby being another name that is set to join the Villans.

Taking to Twitter, Romano delivered an update regarding the state of play surrounding Diaby, with him stating:

"Moussa Diaby to Aston Villa, here we go! French winger has just said yes to Villa, he wants to join Unai Emery’s project — PL football as priority."

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jones has detailed that Aston Villa may have to part ways with a significant sum of cash if they are to secure Johnson's signature this window.

Jones stated: "It's obviously Premier League tax that sticks Johnson in that same bracket. But at the same time, you've got a player that's just had his first big breakthrough season. He's done extremely well, he's come on to the radar of three or four other Premier League clubs and as a result of that, you're also going to be made to pay a bit over the odds."

Who else could Aston Villa target this summer?

Aston Villa boss Emery will have several potential additions in his sights as he prepares his side for the challenge of juggling both Premier League and Europa Conference League football this term.

Football Insider report that Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto has emerged as a target for the Villans this window; however, they will face competition from the likes of Everton and other English top flight sides.

AC Milan'sCharlesDeKetelaere

The Daily Mail cite that Aston Villa have been offered the opportunity to sign AC Milan midfielder Charles De Ketelaere less than a year after he joined the Serie A giants and it is believed that the Belgium international would be available for around £25 million.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT earlier this month, journalist Jones revealed that Aston Villa are keen on Barcelona forward Ferran Torres, as he said: “There's definite interest there, and they feel he could be a really good player for their system. Getting the two Torres players could be a real good make-up for Aston Villa going forward next season.”

Over the next few weeks, we will begin to get an idea of how Emery plans to shape his squad as the 2023/24 campaign edges nearer to getting underway competitively.

County Championship round-up: Warwickshire secure first win

In a remarkable end to a dramatic match, Warwickshire skittled Middlesex for 136 at Lord’s to claim their first win of the season in the Specsavers County Championship’s Division One by a thumping 190-run margin.Chris Woakes, completing a successful comeback from a two-month injury lay-off, took 3 for 38 as he and Keith Barker, who snapped up the first three wickets to fall and finished with 3 for 21, left the Middlesex second innings in ruins. And all this, on a humiliating day for the champions, after Barker and Chris Wright had earlier taken their unlikely ninth-wicket partnership to 97 as Warwickshire, who resumed on 293 for 8, reached 361 in their own second innings to set Middlesex 327 to win on a pitch which had seemingly flattened out following the opening-day carnage of 20 wickets.Gubbins’ England hopes hit by injury

Nick Gubbins’ hopes of an England call-up appear to be over after suffering a hamstring injury during Middlesex’s defeat at Lord’s.
While Gubbins has not enjoyed the best of seasons – he has scored just one Championship century and is averaging 24.91 – he has a reputation as one of the best players of fast bowling on the circuit and is thought to have the game to flourish on the pitches anticipated in Australia.
With Keaton Jennings enduring a grim series against South Africa and Haseeb Hameed struggling for form, Gubbins had been mentioned as a potential replacement in recent days. He played for England Lions over the winter and only just missed out on selection when Jennings was called-up during the India series.
With England’s squad for the first Investec Test against West Indies scheduled to be named on Friday, it seems Gubbins is unlikely to be considered for a call-up. George Dobell

Middlesex, it is true, were hampered by injuries to openers Nick Gubbins and Sam Robson – Gubbins was forced to come in at No 8 after tearing a hamstring in the field – but the way both their batting and bowling fell away in this game will be of great concern to them.Warwickshire, meanwhile, though they may well remain bottom of Division One when this round of matches is done, are now only 31 points behind Middlesex – who began this game in fifth place – with five matches remaining for both counties in this summer’s campaign.Barker ended up on 62 not out from 109 balls, with eight fours, after resuming on 30 and his stand with Wright, who made an 83-ball 41 before being caught behind off Steven Finn, flourished in a morning session in which the Middlesex bowlers huffed and puffed to little effect.Leg spinner Nathan Sowter then earned himself a maiden first-class wicket by bowling last man Ryan Sidebottom for 1, but by then the damage done was not just to Middlesex’s morale. Gubbins, in attempting to take a sprawling catch off a top-edged Barker hook as he ran in from long leg, hurt himself so badly that he had to be helped from the field by Middlesex’s medical staff.Gubbins was unable to open, meaning Nick Compton was promoted to partner Robson, who used Sowter as a runner as he made 19 despite a leg injury before being first out.Middlesex were 20 without loss at lunch but that proved only to be the calm before the storm. The headlong collapse began at the start of the second over after the interval with Robson pinned leg-before by Barker who then, later in the same over, had Stevie Eskinazi taken at second slip for 2.Left-armer Barker struck again in his next over, this time going around the wicket to surprise Compton with a nasty lifter that he touched to keeper Tim Ambrose to go for 3.And 28 for 3 became 28 for 4 when Woakes nipped one off the seam to have John Simpson leg-before for 4. Ryan Higgins, after one extra cover driven four, was also leg-before to Woakes for 5 in the England all-rounder’s next over, and the same bowler soon breached James Franklin’s defences to bowl the Middlesex captain for 1.From 45 for 6 there were a few defiant blows from Sowter, who had been joined by Gubbins and runner on Franklin’s dismissal, before his 37 ended when he turned the first ball of Sidebottom’s second over straight into the hands of short leg.Middlesex’s tail was cleaned up by off spinner Jeetan Patel and right-arm seamer Sidebottom, who added 2 for 41 to his first innings’ 4 for 29 and completed a memorable championship debut by winning an leg-before appeal against Gubbins on 15 to finish the match. Patel had Tom Helm taken at first slip for 15 and bowled Tim Murtagh for 0 to give himself figures of 2 for 19.A last wicket frolic by No 11 Finn and the injured Gubbins, who added a quickfire 48 with Finn playing some superb shots in his unbeaten 31, provided scant consolation for Middlesex, who for much of the first two days were clear favourites to win this game. For Warwickshire, bowled out for just 126 at the start of the match, this was a significant victory – especially as they had lost five of their previous eight games. Bowling out Middlesex for 161 on a helter-skelter opening day kept them in the contest, and then a gritty second innings batting effort on day two took the sting out of Middlesex’s seam attack. When day three dawned, however, with their lead a seemingly middling 258 on an easing pitch, they could not have dreamed of winning so decisively or so quickly. It is a result which could yet have ramifications for the ultimate destiny of both sides this season.

Liverpool Interested In Replicating Jota Deal With £52m ‘Machine’

Liverpool are firmly in contention to sign Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha with pivot Fabinho closing in on a £40m move to Saudi Arabian outfit Al Itihadd.

Is Joao Palhinha leaving Fulham?

According to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, the Reds are 'most keen' on the Portugal international as they seek fresh faces to reassemble their midfield.

Tavolieri claims that the Cottagers are seeking in excess of £52m for the ace, with certain sources claiming that a jaw-dropping £90m might even be the requirement to prise him away from Marco Silva's squad.

Reliable source ExWHUEmployee claims that the 28-year-old wants a move to the Hammers, though it's hard to imagine he would turn his head at a move to Anfield if Jurgen Klopp decides to advance negotiations.

Is Joao Palhinha a good player?

Having lost James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to contractual conclusions last month, Klopp might not have wanted to lose such a distinguished star as Fabinho despite the Brazilian's poor performances last season, especially when partnering with captain Jordan Henderson's forthcoming and highly-publicised move to Saudi side Al Ettifaq.

While The Athletic recently posted a report summarising Liverpool's top targets, Palhinha could prove to be the ace best-placed to unlock the full capacity of this talented Liverpool team, it just remains to be seen if a reasonable fee could be negotiated for a player with four years left on his current deal.

The metrics certainly don't do the £50k-per-week gem any harm, with FBref ranking the "machine" – as he has been called by teammate Harrison Reed – among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for tackles, the top 12% for clearances and the top 8% for aerials won per 90.

joao-palhinha-fulham-premier-league

Completing a £17m transfer to London last summer, Sky Sports reporter James Weir even went as far as to say that he had been "one of the signings of the season" after playing a starring role in Fulham's tenth-placed finish after achieving promotion that term.

It would be ludicrous for Liverpool to not attempt to sign the phenom, especially considering the Anfield side's past success in raiding teams of lesser stature in the Premier League under Klopp's wing.

Of recent years, the prime example is the £41m acquisition of dynamic attacker Diogo Jota from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, with Palhinha's compatriot harvesting 58 direct contributions from 117 matches since his arrival, winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

The 26-year-old has been hailed as a "pressing monster" by Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders and was instrumental in the side's vital late-season purple patch last term, scoring seven goals across the last eight league encounters.

With the Portuguese star making the successful leap to a side capable of challenging for major honours with regularity, perhaps Palhinha can join his countryman and make a marked improvement on the Merseyside club's central midfield.

Liverpool must now act in order to get the Anfield masses cheering again, and with Palhinha's signing, the perfect foundation for Klopp's new-look midfield might just be installed.

Everton Making Progress In Pursuit Of "Fantastic" £19m Ace

Everton are making progress in their pursuit of Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto, and there is now a feeling that a deal could go through, according to a report from TuttoMercatoWeb.

Is Wilfried Gnonto signing for Everton?

It has recently been reported that Leeds manager Daniel Farke expects to sell Gnonto before the transfer window shuts, having already sanctioned his departure, with the Toffees in talks to snap him up.

Sean Dyche is said to be a big admirer of the winger's dynamism and versatility, having featured in several attacking roles for the Whites last season, but it has been very difficult to get a deal over the line up to this point.

Leeds have been playing hardball in negotiations, with an agreement between the two clubs yet to be struck, meaning Everton have now started to run the rule over potential alternative options.

Talks have been held over a potential loan move for Southampton's Kamaldeen Sulemana, with the Merseysiders growing frustrated in their pursuit of the Leeds ace, but they are now close to making a breakthrough in negotiations.

That is according to a report from TuttoMercatoWeb, which details that the Toffees have made a €20m (£17m) offer for the 19-year-old, just shy of the Whites' asking price of €22m (£19m).

It is stated that Everton could soon hold personal talks with the Italian, who is their main target to strengthen their attack, and there is now a feeling that the deal could end up going through.

The two clubs are still some way apart in their valuation of the Italian, but the gap is closing, and it now appears as though Leeds may finally be willing to soften their stance, having previously been extremely tough in their negotiations.

How good is Wilfried Gnonto?

The starlet was praised by former manager Jesse Marsch for the impact he made at Elland Road last season, in what was a breakthrough year as he was lauded as "fantastic". However, he was unable to help Leeds retain their place in the Premier League.

In 24 top-flight appearances, the Italy international amassed two goals and four assists, which is not a bad return in a struggling side, but it casts doubt over whether he would be able to hit the ground running at Goodison Park.

Of course, the Toffees also struggled last season, avoiding relegation by the skin of their teeth on the final day of the season, and it is unclear whether the Verbania-born ace would be able to make an immediate impact to help them compete higher up the table in the upcoming campaign.

wilfried-gnonto-everton-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

The Leeds winger is still very young, with plenty of time on his side to develop further, but he ranks in just the 24th percentile for non-penalty goals per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers, and the 37th percentile for shot-creating actions.

There are indications that Sulemana could be a better addition to Dyche's squad, with the Southampton ace averaging more successful take-one and non-penalty goals per 90 in the past year.

Signing Gnonto for £19m is a real risk for Everton, given that he is inexperienced, and while Sulemana may be available on loan, the Italian did show some promising signs for Leeds last season, so could end up being an astute signing.

Tottenham: Spurs Hold Talks For "Extraordinary" Star

Tottenham Hotspur have held talks to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher with his club open to selling him this summer, according to reports.

Who will Spurs sign this summer?

New manager Ange Postecoglou is in the middle of a crucial, crucial period of his Spurs reign as he attempts to strengthen for his full debut campaign.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, playmaker James Maddison and winger Manor Solomon arrive as confirmed signings with Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski making their north London stays permanent as well.

Despite their current outlay totalling £117 million, the north Londoners won't be finished there.

It is reliably believed that Spurs want to add two senior centre-back signings to their roster, with Postecoglou admitting that new defensive additions are being worked on behind-the-scenes.

"That's definitely our intention, absolutely," said the head coach recently.

"We've been working on it for a while and we'll definitely try to get it done as quickly as possible.

"I don't think it's any secret about some of the areas we needed to strengthen. Some of it I identified early on. The goalkeeper was one and central defence is another.

"In terms of the other boys, we've got a big squad but my view is I wanted to bring them along and just work with them, get some clarity in my head and give clarity to them."

Meanwhile, Postecoglou's side are also hunting for potential midfield additions, especially since Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is reportedly nearing a move to Atletico Madrid.

Gallagher, who is ready to leave Chelsea in search of a new opportunity, has been linked with a move to Tottenham alongside the likes of Aston Villa's Douglas Luiz.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

As per journalist Graeme Bailey and 90min, Tottenham have "had talks" to sign the 23-year-old alongside both West Ham and Brighton.

It's added that Chelsea are open to selling him this summer, but there is a problem in the form of his valuation, as Mauricio Pochettino's side value the player at £50 million.

None of the aforementioned trio are willing to pay that amount for Gallagher, leading to a stalemate of sorts.

"Chelsea open to Conor Gallagher sale but they stand firm on valuation," wrote Bailey on Twitter.

"West Ham, Tottenham and Brighton have all had talks – but none would be willing to pay £50m for him."

How good is Conor Gallagher?

The former Crystal Palace star endured a season of inconsistent starts last campaign with around half of his appearances coming from the substitute's bench.

Gallagher's best season at the top level came on loan at Selhurst Park over 2021/2022, where he finished the season as Patrick Vieira's best-performer by average match rating (WhoScored).

The homegrown ace racked up eight goals and three assists in the league that year – which clearly showcases he can be a player of real quality.

“His development is extraordinary and outstanding," said former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel last year.

“He is one of the key players at Crystal Palace and he has made a huge step in his development up front.

“He was a pleasure to coach in pre-season – he has so much positive energy, so much energy in general and so much work-rate to give that he can of course be a big help and a big influence.”

West Ham: "World-Class" Player Wants To Join Moyes

West Ham United could go back in for Southampton star James Ward-Prowse and he is "pretty keen" on that being the case, according to reports.

Who will West Ham sign?

David Moyes and technical director Tim Steidten have been at the centre of reports claiming there is a current rift behind the scenes at West Ham, coming as they remain the only club not to make a single summer signing.

We are into the final month of this transfer window, giving West Ham precious little time to strengthen in key areas all over the pitch, but the Hammers head coach has previously expressed optimism.

Speaking at the end of last month, Moyes revealed that "several offers" have been made by the club in their attempts to strengthen after the £105 million sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal.

“Because of the shortness of the summer and being in Australia. it’s meant the time has been limited, but I’m sure we’ll get down to work and do what we have to do,” Moyes told Sky Sports.

“The club have made several offers for players, we’re out on the market, we’re quite active, and hopefully some of them will come off in the future.”

Ward-Prowse, who was subject to rejected bids from West Ham as they haggled over price with Southampton, is reportedly pretty keen to make the move.

A deal for the Englishman, according to journalist Dean Jones, could still be alive.

"The James Ward-Prowse situation is still alive," said Jones to GiveMeSport.

"I know that goes against the current wave of information, but the fact they have made offers shows their intent and while Saints might keep knocking them back at the minute, the update I have just had suggests this is a deal that will eventually get done if they persist as the player is pretty keen on that being the case.

"I don’t know how quickly it’ll happen because of the approach West Ham have taken on this and, of course, they are very wary about the price point here and not overpaying.

"At the moment, they are about £10million away from valuation. To be honest, maybe he even starts the season at Saints. But he won’t be there much longer and, at the moment, he’s the Moyes target that looks likely, even if Steidten has been trying to calm the excitement around that opportunity."

Southampton's James Ward-Prowse

How good is James Ward-Prowse?

The midfielder was, undoubtedly, Southampton's star player last season – standing out as their best-performing player by average match rating according to WhoScored.

Former Saints boss Nathan Jones, speaking to the media last term, also heaped praise on Ward-Prowse as a "world-class" player.

“He’s been outstanding since I came in, his attitude," said the Welshman.

“My first conversation with him was 10 minutes after he didn’t get picked for the England squad. Since that moment, he’s been absolutely world-class for me. The way he reacted and the performances you’re seeing now, it’s really motivated and driven.

“He’s vital, I like to get to know my captains and have a real relationship with them, a real personal relationship so they understand decisions we make."

Rubel denied immigration clearance to fly to South Africa

Despite having a valid visa like his team-mates, Rubel Hossain was not given a boarding pass because of a new rule issued by the South African immigration authorities

Mohammad Isam19-Sep-2017Fast bowler Rubel Hossain could not travel with the Bangladesh Test squad to Johannesburg on Saturday after he was denied a boarding pass by the airlines. Rubel remained in Dhaka and, while his availability for Bangladesh’s three-day warm-up match against SA Invitations XI – from September 21 – is in doubt, the Bangladesh Cricket Board is confident he will be available for the Test series, which starts from September 28.Even though Rubel had a valid visa like his team-mates, the South Africa immigration authorities have a new provision in which, despite anyone having a visa, they issue “Okay to board” assurances to the airlines, specifying who can fly. Rubel’s name was missing from that list. Akram Khan, the BCB’s cricket committee chairman, attributed the situation to a mistake in the visa issued to Rubel.”The South Africa visa office made a mistake in his visa,” Akram said. “It has to do with his date of birth. It will take a day or two to correct everything. He can go before the Test series. He is an important player, so we cannot deprive him because of miscommunication.”BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury, too, said that the board was communicating with Cricket South Africa while the airlines were also aiding them to quickly resolve the issue.”There is a new provision that the passenger needs to have an ‘Okay to Board’ clearance from the ultimate destination. It is the responsibility of the concerned airlines before issuing the boarding pass to any individual,” Chowdhury explained. “We are in touch with Cricket South Africa and hopefully, the matter will be resolved soon. He will fly to South Africa with the first available flight once the matter is resolved.”Rubel was one of three players – alongside Subhasis Roy and Mahmudullah – to have earned a recall in the Bangladesh Test side. There are, however, four other fast bowlers in the touring party, including Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Shafiul Islam and Subashis, that Bangladesh can rely on.
