Bulls overcome Aiyappa hat-trick for winning start

Round-up of the opening day’s action in the Karnataka Premier League

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Sep-2010Bijapur Bulls overcame a few nervous moments and overhauled the revised target of 75, with three balls to spare, after Bangalore Provident (Rural) posted 123 for 4 off 17 overs in Bangalore. Opener Maniunath Manjunath set the platform for BP with 47 off 42 balls, and Rahul Bhatkal increased the pace towards the end with two sixes and three fours in his 28-ball 39. Bulls had to score 75 in nine overs and their reply was kick-started by a 41-run opening stand between Gaurav Dhiman and Mithun Beerala. Devraj Patil who came in at one-drop hustled 23 off 10 balls to put the Bulls in charge before four wickets fell in four balls to set up a tight finish. NC Aiyappa removed Dhiman, Patil and Sudhindra Shinde off successive balls, and Nithin Mulky was run-out off the next, leaving Bulls needing seven off the last over. Stuart Binny, however, held his nerve and sealed the deal in their favour.Suraj Sampath struck an unbeaten 60 off 55 balls as Belagavi Panthers overcame Malnad Gladiators’ modest total of 110 in Bangalore. Malnad’s bowlers set up the win, with seamer Ronit More standing out with a spell of 2 for 23 in four overs. Belgavi’s chase was off to a poor start, with Jagadeesh Arunkumar perishing in the first over. Shyam Ponnappa struggled to force the pace and when he fell, at 57 for 2 in the 13th over, Gladiators scented an opening. Sampath, however, shut the door on them and finished things in Suresh Vinod’s company, with eight balls to spare.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Xavi's side cruised to victory thanks to goals from Raphinha, Joao Felix, De Jong, and Fermin Lopez as they leapfrogged Girona into second. While midfielder De Jong was critical of his own display, the 26-year-old completed 92 per cent of his passes, made four tackles, five clearances, and won 11 ground duels against the visitors.

  • WHAT FRENKIE DE JONG SAID

After the win, the Dutchman said: "If you win 4-0 it's more comfortable, but in the first half we suffered a little. We had chances because they pressed high and we had a lot of space behind us. Many times they stayed one against one and those at the top took advantage. It wasn't my best day when it came to passing, but in the end we won. I'm going to continue the same. I always train hard, whether it's good or bad, but I don't think I was good with the ball today. We have to fight until the end. It's not up to us, but we have to keep winning games. In the end we'll see where we are."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The result means Barca have cut the gap to league leaders and bitter rivals Real Madrid to just five points, although Los Blancos can extend that to eight with a win over Sevilla on Sunday. With manager Xavi stepping down this summer, a defence of their La Liga title would be a stunning way to end on a high.

Tshabalala cleared to bowl, given warning

Thandi Tshabalala, the KwaZulu-Natal offspinner, has been cleared to continue bowling his offspin delivery, while his doosra has been found illegal. Cricket South Africa cleared the offspinner after an analysis at an ICC accredited testing centre, and Tshabalala has been warned that he could be cited for a second time if he bowls a delivery that was found illegal.”Following the test conducted on his bowling action, the independent assessment has revealed that his bowling action of his off-spin delivery is legal, however the doosra delivery is illegal and contravenes Law 24.2 (as read with Law 24.3) of the Laws of Cricket,” CSA said in a press release. “In accordance with the ICC regulations for the Review of Bowlers Reported with Suspected Illegal Bowling Actions (effective 6 October 2015) Mr. Tshabalala will be allowed to continue bowling in Franchise or Senior Provincial Cricket but subject to the warning that should he continue to bowl any of the specific type (s) of delivery for which he has been found to have an Illegal Bowling Action, he will run the risk of being cited a second time.”Tshabalala played four ODIs for South Africa, between June and August 2007. He has taken 164 wickets in 83 first-class matches at an average of 40.55, while he has 89 List A wickets in 108 matches.

Worcestershire collapse hands NZ memorable win

Scorecard2:58

Dobell: ‘Guptill, Henry likely to make New Zealand XI’

It may not pass into sporting folklore in quite the manner of Devon Loch, Greg Norman or almost every limited-overs side South African have selected in the last 20 years, but Worcestershire produced a choke of museum quality to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory against New Zealand at New Road. At this very moment, the Duchess of Kent may be consoling Shaaiq Choudhry as he weeps on her shoulder.Perhaps that assessment is harsh. Not on Worcestershire – who certainly lacked composure – but on New Zealand who, at the key moment, performed with the skill and intensity of a confident, united side that backs itself to prevail under pressure. This was not, by any means, a wholly convincing performance from the tourists, but by turning a confidence-sapping defeat into a memorable victory, they depart for Lord’s with spirits high. The key facts are these: with seven wickets in hand and requiring just 55 more runs from the final 16 overs of the match to complete their first win against a touring side this century, Worcestershire lost their last six wickets for 22 runs. Having eased to 119 for 1 in pursuit of 246, they were bowled out for 230. As Steve Rhodes, their director of cricket, said afterwards: “It was the one that got away from us. We collapsed to lose the game. You have to give them credit, but we should have seen it home, for sure.”While New Zealand bowled – and caught, in particular – very well, most of the Worcestershire batsmen will reflect that they played a large part in their own downfall. Requiring less than four an over, they lost their heads and their wickets with a series of attempted slogs that spoke of a naivety within the dressing room. Perhaps, in such a young side, such failings are inevitable on the road of progress. There are various caveats to this result. As is the increasing custom of many warm-up games played by touring sides, this was not a first-class match – New Zealand utilised 14 players; Worcestershire 15 – and there was, at times, a lack of intensity to proceedings. Moeen Ali missed the final day having joined up with the England squad, too.Matt Henry took the last three wickets to fall and was rated the best New Zealand bowler by Worcestershire’s batsmen•Getty Images

And, in truth, such games are not about results. They are about preparation. So even if New Zealand had lost, they could take comfort from the performance of Martin Guptill – who forced his way into the side for the first Test at Lord’s – and even when they won, they would have been a little concerned about the form of some of their batsmen – notably Ross Taylor, who remains a little out of sorts. They will be boosted greatly by the arrival, by Monday lunchtime, of all four of the players currently absent on IPL duty. While it is not ideal for Brendon McCullum, Trent Boult, Kane Williamson and Tim Southee to go into a Test without any meaningful red-ball cricket for five months, it is also a regular symptom of the modern game and should not unsettle the rest of the squad.”It’s been that way for the last eight years,” Mike Hesson, the New Zealand coach told ESPNcricinfo after the match. “We don’t pay high enough wages to dictate to the players what they do and we have actually encouraged them to go to the IPL.”Hesson all but confirmed that Guptill – who scored 150 in a New Zealand innings in which the second highest score was 30 – would play at Lord’s but was less revealing about the identity of the third seamer in the Test side. While the plan remains for Mark Craig to provide the spin and Corey Anderson, who rested on the last day here, to play as the seam-bowling allrounder, it remains unclear whether Doug Bracewell, Matt Henry or Neil Wagner will take the final position.Bracewell was probably – and by only a marginal distance – the least impressive of the three, while Worcestershire’s batsmen rated Henry both the quickest and the pick of the trio. He also offers a bit of extra batting in the lower-order.”Guptill played superbly,” Hesson said. “It was a decisive performance. He has done exactly what we wanted. Henry is really good talent and Wagner has never let us down, so we have a difficult decision to make there.”To some extent, though, New Zealand’s frailty with the bat was masked by Guptill’s century. Had he been caught by Ben Cox, a top-edged cut off Choudhry, they may well have lost. Taylor drove to mid-on, BJ Watling glanced to leg slip and Luke Ronchi edged a sweep as New Zealand’s batsmen tried to accelerate in conditions were accumulation was more appropriate. But they did declare in both innings and they were keen to test themselves under pressure, so it might prove unwise to read too much into the relatively low scores.Worcestershire will take some pleasure from the performance, too. Nine years into a first-class career that has encompassed only 22 games, Choudhry claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in first-team senior cricket, while Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Ed Barnard – whose bowling caught the eye of Hesson – both provided evidence of talent that should serve the club well for a decade or more. While Choudhry, a left-arm spinner whose opportunities are generally limited to a spoiling role in limited-overs cricket, didn’t exactly rip out batsmen, he showed the benefit of a winter working with Norman Gifford on bowling a little quicker and maintained his composure when attacked. This was a missed opportunity, though. The last time Worcestershire beat a touring side – Australia in a limited-overs game in 1997 – Steve Waugh had just claimed that their current chief executive, David Leatherdale, was such a modest talent that he “wouldn’t get a bowl in a Chinese restaurant”. Leatherdale responded with figures of 5 for 10 and an anecdote that he will continue to enjoy for years to come. A young, developing side could have taken heart from such a victory.New Zealand, meanwhile, might not have enjoyed perfect preparation. But they look stronger and more resilient than the last time they were here and represent dangerous opposition to an England side embarking on yet another period of change and transition.

Hamish Barton steps down as NZ Women coach

Former Auckland cricketer Hamish Barton has resigned from his post as head coach of New Zealand Women

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Mar-2015Former Auckland cricketer Hamish Barton has resigned from his post as head coach of New Zealand Women.Barton, who was also the High Performance Manager for Netball Northern Zone, cited heavy time demands of both roles including international travel with the cricket team, for his decision.Barton, who had been an assistant coach of the side in 2012, was New Zealand Cricket’s coach development manager between 2009 to 2013, and had also played for and coached the Argentina team between 2005 and 2009. He took over as New Zealand Women’s coach from Warren Lees in July 2014.His tenure started with an away loss to West Indies, but he recently led the side to a series win against England in the ICC Women’s Championship One Day international Series.Lindsay Crocker, the head of cricket operations for NZC, said that while he was disappointed, he understood Barton’s position.”Having been involved in the women’s game for a number of years, Hamish brought a lot of knowledge to the group and we’re sorry to lose that,” Crocker said. “Hamish has given a lot to the team, but dual roles are difficult to maintain. We wish him all the best for the future. We will now start to work through the appointment process for Hamish’s replacement.”Barton played 17 first-class matches for Auckland, Canterbury and the New Zealand Academy scoring 572 runs and taking 16 wickets. In 21 List-A games, he scored 253 runs and seven wickets.

Amla and de Villiers flay West Indies

Moonda: South Africa can do something special

When a third wicket fell in 15 balls during the morning session, possibilities for the opening day at Centurion abounded but the final outcome involved two very common sights: Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers with hundreds to their name. The pair came together on 57 for 3 following the loss of three wickets for no runs either side of drinks as West Indies briefly found their venom and they were not separated for the rest of the day. There was added significance in both hundreds, for Amla it was his first Test as captain on home soil and for de Villiers it marked 10 years to the day since he made his Test debut against England, at Port Elizabeth – a match that also marked the first appearance for Dale Steyn.Their stand at the close was worth a fourth-wicket South Africa record 283 in 75 overs – 115 runs coming between lunch and tea – the run rate highlighting both the counter-attacking nature of the batting and also the number of scoring opportunities offered by the West Indies attack.Only Kemar Roach ended in credit, his first spell have been an exacting six overs worth 2 for 16, but there was the worrying sight of him hobbling off the field five balls into his 16th over with what appeared to be an ankle injury. With Roach off the ground, the day ended with the dispiriting sight of Sulieman Benn, Marlon Samuels and Kraigg Braithwaite going through overs of spin with the old ball.AB de Villiers guided South Africa to a strong position with his 37th Test fifty•AFP

De Villiers was first to the three figures, his 20th hundred in Tests, from 138 balls and Amla followed a short while later from 161 deliveries, his first century against West Indies which leaves only Zimbabwe for him to tick off. Both had a stroke of fortune; one a slice of outrageous luck and the other a sloppy mistake by West Indies in the field. The first significant moment came shortly after lunch when Amla was on 25 and Roach beat the edge with another wicked legcutter, the ball clipped the off stump but the bails refused to fall to the ground. Later, there was a self-induced error when de Villiers was 63, Benn could not collect a throw at the stumps with the batsmen well short of his ground.De Villiers struck two sixes, advancing at Benn and Samuels, but neither batsman had to go out of their way to keep the scoring rate high with most overs offering a scoring opportunity. Still, the driving from both was, as ever, a joy to behold. Jerome Taylor – who was the biggest let down for West Indies – regularly offered up width, and Sheldon Cottrell managed just three maidens between them in 35 overs.West Indies were playing their first international since the contracts dispute which led them to withdrawing from the India series in October and they did not seem in gear for a Test series. Play was delayed by half an hour due to early morning rain and the skies remained heavy as Denesh Ramdin and Amla emerged for the toss. It was no surprise when Ramdin was quick to insert South Africa. But the West Indies quicks did not get the memo regarding conditions and could not find a consistent line and length in the early exchanges: the first 10 overs brought nine boundaries, six to Alviro Petersen and three to Dean Elgar.Roach, surprisingly, was not given the new ball and by the time he came into the attack South Africa already had 44 on the board in nine overs. He brought menace and consistency to the attack, started to build up some pressure and was rewarded with Petersen’s edge with a delivery which straightened and went to first slip. The message was starting to reach the West Indies bowlers and Cottrell’s second spell began to offer a double-pronged threat as the runs dried up.While Petersen received a decent delivery to end his stay, that could not be said for Elgar who helped a short, wide offering from Cottrell to gully – an awful waste for a batsman in conditions when a good ball is never far away. Cottrell, the former soldier, who used to stand guard at Sabina Park before turning his hand to fast bowling, gave a salute as Samuels held the chance.West Indies were buoyed and a few moments later were ecstatic when Roach’s probing line found Faf du Plessis’ outside edge – his first Test duck in his 29th innings – and the third wicket fell with the score on 57. It was an opening for West Indies but they were not good enough to force through it. Whether they get another opportunity, in this match or even the series, remains to be seen.
