Cockbain's best out-does Compton's

Captain Ian Cockbain hit his best T20 score of 91 to guide Gloucestershire to a seven-wicket victory over Middlesex in the opening NatWest Blast game at Bristol.

ScorecardNick Compton struck 78 off 53 deliveries but it was not enough for Middlesex•PA PhotosCaptain Ian Cockbain hit his best T20 score of 91 to guide Gloucestershire to a seven-wicket victory over Middlesex in the opening NatWest Blast game at Bristol.Cockbain smacked five sixes and nine fours in an exciting 49-ball innings, sharing a second-wicket stand of 98 in 9.3 overs with Hamish Marshall as the hosts reached a target of 176 to win with an over to spare.Earlier, Nick Compton had also made a career-best T20 score of 78, off 53 balls, with nine fours to help Middlesex post 175 for 3. Paul Stirling contributed 39 and Adam Voges 31 not out, while Benny Howell was the most economical Gloucestershire bowler. It looked unlikely to be enough on a true pitch. Despite increasingly poor light and intermittent rain, Marshall gave the home side a flying start, timing the ball sweetly from the start to reach his half-century off 33 balls, with five fours and two sixes. After the early loss of Chris Dent, Cockbain joined Marshall and the outcome never looked in much doubt. The pair matched each other shot for shot in taking the score from 15 to 113 before Marshall was caught behind off Steven Finn, who returned 2 for 29 from his four overs.Peter Handscomb fell cheaply to James Harris, but, having reached a 30-ball half-century, Cockbain continued to bat with confidence and panache to see the job through, finishing the match with his fifth six. His previous best score in the competition was 84 against Sussex at Hove last season. The Middlesex total had been based on an opening stand of 65 in 6.3 overs between Compton and Stirling, who began watchfully and blossomed as the Powerplay progressed.Insights

Gloucestershire batted well to chase down 175 with six balls to spare but Middlesex’s bowling, which conceded more than 175 five times last season–only Derbyshire, Essex and Glamorgan did so more–is notably weak.

Stirling hit the first four off the last ball of the third over, but the next two from Matt Taylor and David Payne saw both concede three boundaries. The innings was really starting to flow when Stirling, having faced 24 balls and hit 6 fours, was bowled having a swing at Taylor, whose brother Jack was introduced into the attack straight after the breakthrough. The offspinner began steadily and after ten overs Middlesex were relatively becalmed on 79 for 2 as he claimed the wicket of Joe Burns, caught at long-off for only 5, having survived a stumping chance to Geraint Jones.Compton moved to his half-century off 36 balls, with four fours, in the 14th over. While he and Adam Voges picked off ones and twos, the innings lacked an explosive contribution. In the 17th over Compton passed his previous best T20 score of 74, made for Somerset against Essex at Taunton back in 2010. But he perished soon afterwards, leg before to James Fuller. It was left to James Franklin to hit the only two sixes of the innings, a glorious straight shot off David Payne and a loft over fine leg off Fuller, while Voges hit just two fours in his 27-ball contribution.

Jayasuriya outlines key role for Thisara Perera

Sanath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka Cricket’s chief selector, praised Thisara Perera for a strong return to ODI cricket and said that he could fill the role of a fast-bowling allrounder for the team looking ahead to the World Cup.Perera’s 4 for 34 against Pakistan in the third ODI led Sri Lanka to a 2-1 series win, while earning him a second successive Man-of-the-Match award. He was also named player of the series for his nine wickets and 78 runs, including a brutal 65 off 36 balls in the second ODI in Hambantota that helped the side square the series.”Thisara is a key figure in our World Cup plans for next year and it is good to see him perform like that with both bat and ball,” Jayasuriya said after the third ODI. “We need to have a fast-bowling allrounder in our team and, if Thisara performs the way he is doing right now, he can give us a lot of options whether to play six or seven batsmen in our line-up.”After the third match, Perera credited coaches Anusha Samaranayake, Sumithra Warnakulasuriya and Ruwin Peiris with whom he had worked extensively over the last few months. According to Jayasuriya, Perera had been advised rest by doctors due to mental stress, before returning to international cricket.”I am glad that he has taken upon himself to train under some qualified, Sri Lanka Cricket coaches to regain his confidence,” Jayasuriya said. “I am a firm believer that if any player wants to improve his game individually he should go to a coach and get personal attention. Maybe the team coaches may not like it but still, all these coaches are from the SLC coaching staff.”Getting personal attention from a coach was a method Nuwan Kulasekara could also try, Jayasuriya suggested. The out-of-form Kulasekara took his last ODI wicket in May against England and in the two games against Pakistan, he gave away 79 runs at an economy rate of 6.15. He was dropped for the third ODI, making way for Dhammika Prasad, who took 2 for 25 in his six overs.”It would be good if Nuwan can also get some individual attention from our coaches and regain his form,” Jayasuriya said.Jayasuriya also singled out Prasad as having potential to shoulder greater responsibility: “What I like about him is he always performs whenever he is given the opportunity and his body language is also good. He can also bat and he could be a useful fast-bowling allrounder. We need players to perform so that we can have an idea of the combination we require for the World Cup.”Sri Lanka, who have been playing continuously since December, will now have a long break from international cricket. Their next series is against England in the last week of November.

Andrew Poynter to lead Ireland against Sri Lanka A

Batsman Andrew Poynter will captain Ireland for the first time, in the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka A which gets underway in Belfast next week

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Jul-2014Batsman Andrew Poynter will captain Ireland for the first time, in the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka A which begins in Belfast next week.Andrew Poynter, who captained Ireland A to a 10-wicket win against the MCC last week, will lead a 14-man squad which includes four uncapped players in seamer Peter Chase, allrounder Barry McCarthy and batsmen Nick Larkin and Chris Dougherty.Thirty-four-year-old allrounder Andrew White, who last made an international appearance in the Intercontinental Cup in December, has also been picked, and is one game away from becoming Ireland’s most capped player, ahead of Kyle McCallan.Andrew Poynter’s brother Stuart will keep wicket for the team, but fast bowler Graeme McCarter will be available only for the first game before returning to his county Gloucestershire.”The selectors have taken the opportunity to get a look at some new faces against quality opposition,” Ireland coach Phil Simmons said. “It’s a great chance for these guys to show their abilities against a very strong Sri Lanka A side.”There are obviously World Cup places up for grabs, so it’s an important series for the players to state their case and grab their chance. They’ve all been performing well with their clubs, but need to show us they can do it at the higher level.”Ireland take on Sri Lanka in Stormont on July 23 and July 25, before finishing the three-match one-day series in Coleraine on July 27.Squad: Andrew Poynter (capt), John Anderson, Andrew Balbirnie, Peter Chase, Chris Dougherty, Nick Larkin, Andrew McBrine, Graeme McCarter, Barry McCarthy, Stuart Poynter, Eddie Richardson, Stuart Thompson, Andrew White, Craig Young

RCB 'not playing too well as a team' – Morkel

Albie Morkel has said RCB were “not playing too well as a team yet,” and put their struggles down to top-order wobbles and the bowlers conceding too many extras

RCB just need to turn on the switch – Albie Morkel

Albie Morkel, the Royal Challengers Bangalore allrounder, has said RCB were “not playing too well as a team yet,” and put their struggles in IPL 2014 down to top-order wobbles and the bowlers conceding too many extras.Royal Challengers’ 32-run defeat at home to Kings XI Punjab on May 9 was their fifth loss in six games, after they had begun the season with two wins. They are presently sixth in the points table.”It just hasn’t clicked; I don’t know why,” Morkel told when asked about RCB’s batting. “In five out of the seven games we have played, we have lost too many wickets up front. We are not playing too well as a team yet. There are six more games left and we have to win all of them to have a chance at the playoffs.”Before the season began, Royal Challengers were touted to have the most destructive line-up, with Yuvraj Singh and Morkel adding to the existing firepower of Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. However, only de Villiers averages more than 23, and before scoring two half-centuries in his last three innings, he too was having an indifferent season. Gayle averages 22 in four innings, striking at 156, and Yuvraj and Kohli average 20 in eight each, striking at 102 and 113 respectively. The upshot of RCB’s poor top-order form is that Morkel, who is batting higher up the order than he did at his previous team Chennai Super Kings, has had to come into match situations where a rescue act is needed, and not the powerful cameos he is known for. Morkel hasn’t found his groove either, making only 44 runs in four innings.”What has changed here is that I bat a bit higher – at No.6 or 7 – whereas at CSK, I came in at No.8,” Morkel said when asked about the difference in his roles at Super Kings and Royal Challengers. “So, there’s more chance for me with the bat here. However, since we haven’t fired as a batting unit yet, it makes the drill quite difficult for someone coming in later in the order.”I am not talking about me in particular, but anyone coming in at that position. When the number in the wickets column is low, it is nice to come in with the platform already set and then to build on it. Having said that, I have always wanted a bigger batting role, which I have been getting here, and from a personal point of view, I am very disappointed that I haven’t made it count with big scores. But I am not beating myself up yet.”Royal Challengers’ bowling was considered their weak suit but in the early stages of the tournament the attack acquitted itself well. However, in their last two games against Mumbai Indians and Kings XI, RCB conceded 40 runs in extras – 26 of those in wides and no-balls.”Yes, we did bowl too many leg-side wides, and honestly, they weren’t the result of us trying to do something,” Morkel said after the loss against Kings XI. “It was just the lack of discipline. From the bowling unit’s perspective, we did so well in the first five matches, but in the last two, we’ve given away far too many extras. Against MI, we gave away 25 extras, which is way too many if you want to win T20 games. We will try and correct that in the coming matches; we will have to.”

England experiment continues

ESPNcricinfo previews the third ODI between England and Australia

The Preview by Alan Gardner10-Sep-2013Match FactsSeptember 11, Edgbaston
Start time 2pm (1300 GMT)Australia produced an accomplished all-round performance to take a 1-0 lead in the series at Old Trafford•Getty Images

The Big PictureThey say you learn more from your mistakes than your successes and, if so, there should be a fair amount of wisdom to be gleaned from the scribbles in Ashley Giles’ notebook after the weekend. Eoin Morgan, England’s stand-in captain, won the toss and Steven Finn bowled a wicket maiden but little went right from then on, as Australia took a 1-0 lead in the series and Michael Clarke collected twin laurels, with his first ODI hundred against England and his first victory on tour.England have rolled out a half-and-half squad for these fixtures, so it should not be a surprise if the product is a little half-baked. The likes of Michael Carberry and Ben Stokes deserve a few goes in the kitchen to properly evaluate whether they can handle the heat and, while there were obvious deficiencies in the performance at Old Trafford, a couple of the ingredients came off well – Boyd Rankin has seamlessly transferred the promise of his Ireland career to England colours and Jos Buttler was able to showcase his exotic skills over a longer innings. While England fiddle, Australia have capitalised, the confidence that slowly coalesced around the second half of their Ashes campaign becoming firmer by the game. Despite a disappointing Champions Trophy, one-day cricket is probably Australia’s strongest suit and they are focused on fine-tuning their best XI. That the explosive opening partnership of Shaun Marsh and Aaron Finch was quickly defused, and Fawad Ahmed struggled to influence the game, only suggests that they can perform better still.Form guide (Most recent first)
England LWLWW
Australia WWLLWWatch out for…Mitchell Johnson has described how alien it felt to watch the summer’s Ashes skirmishes from his couch in Australia and knows that a fire-breathing performance in the one-day series can help get him back into Test contention. With Mitchell Starc the latest of Australia’s cadre of young pacemen to pull up lame, the chances of a return to Mitch 1.0 during the return series have increased. Johnson may not have some of the natty upgrades of the new generation but, despite the clanking action and occasional processing glitches, operating speeds of 90mph never go out of fashion.Morgan and Giles have argued against suggestions that the selection was wrong at Old Trafford but the make-up of England’s attack will be under extra scrutiny. Their strategy in the 18 months leading up to the Champions Trophy was to play five genuine bowlers, with the possibility of a Ravi Bopara or Joe Root providing a few overs, but an experimental squad for this series has led to them tinkering with the formula, playing Durham allrounder Stokes as the third seamer and No. 8 batsman. On the evidence of the bowling displays against Ireland and Australia, it hasn’t worked.Team newsEngland seem firm in their convictions about the balance of the side but they do have other options. Jamie Overton is the bolter that most England watchers want to see but that would lengthen the tail; perhaps the most appealing compromise would be to give Root a rest and bring in the Sussex quick Chris Jordan, who is also a capable batsman, for a first senior cap.England (possible) 1 Michael Carberry, 2 Kevin Pietersen, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Ravi Bopara, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Ben Stokes, 8 Chris Jordan, 9 James Tredwell, 10 Boyd Rankin, 11 Steven FinnAfter a tumultuous couple of months, we are now beginning to see Darren Lehmann’s Australia masterplan come together. This is the first squad Lehmann has picked himself and George Bailey has praised the atmosphere in the group. Winning helps and a settled side could stay unchanged for a third outing.Australia (possible) 1 Aaron Finch, 2 Shaun Marsh, 3 Shane Watson, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 George Bailey, 6 Adam Voges, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 James Faulkner, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Fawad AhmedPitch and conditionsIt was at Edgbaston during the Champions Trophy that England’s summer of turners began. India’s spinners found the pitches to be a home from home during their triumphant campaign and despite the arrival of some autumnal weather, a slow, dry surface conducive to spin seems likely. A forecast for rain in the evening won’t be to anyone’s liking, however.Stats and trivia As well as a wet no result against New Zealand during the Champions Trophy, Australia suffered a washout and an abandonment on their previous two visits to Birmingham in 2012 and 2005.England’s win over Australia at Edgbaston at the 2004 Champions Trophy ended a run of 14 consecutive ODI defeats dating back to 1999.Australia’s one-day record of nine wins and four defeats in 2013 (win percentage of 69.23%) is second only to India’s.George Bailey is 30 runs short of 1000 in ODIs.Quotes”When you’ve got inexperience, you’re going to have to suffer some pain occasionally to get some gain.”
“We’ve played some good cricket for the last couple of months, and it’s our time now to really put our foot on the throat and win these last few games.”
