Liverpool: Fans discuss Ian Doyle’s take on Harry Wilson’s Anfield future

Liverpool recently announced that Bournemouth had secured Harry Wilson’s services until the end of the season through an extension on his current loan deal.

The Welshman has been a hot topic amongst Liverpool fans since his time with Derby County, where he netted 18 goals in 50 appearances and was known for rippling the net with a long-distance strike or two (via Transfermarkt). He has since enjoyed a spell on loan with Bournemouth, tallying seven goals in the Premier League this season with the Cherries.

However, despite his growth as an attacker, Ian Doyle doesn’t feel he is an option Jurgen Klopp will be looking to use in the future.

The Liverpool ECHO reporter has commented: “I don’t think there’s any chance he’ll play for Liverpool again,” (relayed via @AnfieldEdition). Doyle’s take has sparked some debate amongst Reds fans.

It seems supporters are split when it comes to Wilson’s future, with one fan sold on him being vital to the club’s growth after tweeting ‘It’s like the board doesn’t know the way forward’.  They are perhaps impressed with his stats both at Derby and Boutnemouth and feel that, at just 23-years-old, he has a future with the club.

However, others aren’t too bothered by the notion of Wilson leaving, potentially as he plays in the same position as Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah and neither are likely to be dropped anytime soon given their outstanding goalscoring records.

West Ham could be set to stall on a move for Chuba Akpom

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

West Ham United could be set to stall on a move for Chuba Akpom due to concerns surrounding Manuel Pellegrini and Mario Husillos, according to Football Insider.

What’s the story?

This stance comes following Football Insider’s report that the latter of these senior figures is ready to resign due to the heavy criticism he has been facing.

Akpom is said to have turned down PAOK’s offer of a contract extension, with his current deal coming to an end in the summer of 2021.

Despite this news, West Ham are not currently looking to push through a move in January, with the aforementioned situation regarding the manager and Director of Football being the main reason.

A decision must be made

This situation offers an indication that West Ham and the senior figures within the club, need to decide on their stance ahead of the January transfer window.

Winter can be an important time for a club’s season, not just because of the number of games that are played in a busy schedule, but also the fact that signings can be made.

Did he really play for us?! No West Ham fan has managed to name all of these obscure Irons signings….

If the Hammers are to get the most out of their campaign, then it can be argued that they will need a clear sense of direction when January comes. If they don’t gain better clarity, it could leave them in a bit of bother when it comes to adding new recruits.

The report offers an indication of how disruptive the current uncertainty can be, so this needs to be addressed before the January transfer window comes around.

In other news, West Ham have identified a goalkeeper target to sign.

Southampton fans react as Cedric Soares reveals his desire to leave

Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to react after Cedric Soares revealed in an interview with The Telegraph that he plans to leave the club at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old – signed from Sporting Lisbon for £4.7m – spent the second half of last season on loan at Inter Milan, but has since returned to St Mary’s to make five appearances this term.

However, with his contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign, the 33-cap Portugal international has made a pretty big revelation in stating his desire to leave when his terms run out.

“I have just this season left. Right now after this season I think I am going to make another step and see what is the best for me. It’s a great opportunity and it’s something (being out-of-contract) that maybe happens once in your life for a player.”

One supporter said that they’re “not worried” about Cedric leaving, stating that it might actually encourage the south coast side to sign some full-backs “for once” – The Athletic reveal that the Saints are targeting reinforcements at centre-back and full-back in the New Year.

‘Southampton are understood to be eyeing up reinforcements at centre-back and full-back in the New Year, with one agent describing the team as a “mess at the back”.’

Let’s take a look at some more of the Twitter reaction…

Pablo Fornals’ struggle continues in West Ham’s draw with Sheffield United

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

West Ham dominated for large spells on Saturday and, but for some poor decision-making from Manuel Pellegrini, they could have taken all three points from the game.

The Hammers enjoyed 61% possession but the match was finely poised after Lys Mousset equalised for the visitors with around 20 minutes to go, and though the Chilean was right to look towards his substitute’s bench, he turned to the wrong man to turn things around.

Pablo Fornals struggled to make the kind of impact his manager and the home crowd were hoping for, with just eight touches in the more than 15 minutes he spent on the pitch, including stoppage time.

As a result, he failed to influence the match in West Ham’s favour, and was careless throughout, managing a pass accuracy of just 60%, which did at least support Pellegrini’s decision to start Robert Snodgrass ahead of him.

He did fire in one cross that almost allowed the Scot to slide the ball home, but his lack of contribution underlines the worrying lack of options on the Hammers’ bench.

Underwhelming

Fornals has underwhelmed so far no matter how his manager has tried to use him.

He is failing to make a significant contribution whether he starts games or is subbed on, and Pellegrini must be wondering how he can extract the best form out of the Spaniard.

The decision to play the 5ft 10 man at right midfield against Everton was a puzzling one, as Andriy Yarmolenko has been in fine form with three goals this term, and provided the assist for West Ham’s goal against Sheffield United.

By comparison, the Spaniard has failed to contribute directly to a single goal, and has managed just 0.6 key passes and 0.4 successful dribbles per game.

Such a return is not good enough for a side looking to improve upon last season’s tenth-placed finish.

The longer Fornals continues to underperform, the greater the scrutiny that will be heaped on Pellegrini, as so far Sebastien Haller is the only one of his summer signings to make any kind of significant impact.

Noel Whelan says Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is "massive boost" to Liverpool when fit

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan believes Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain can offer Liverpool a new dimension when fully fit.

What’s the word?

The former Arsenal midfielder put in an impressive performance during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United, after coming off the bench and almost scoring the winner as his left-footed shot from distance went just the wrong side of the post.

The 26-year-old has only started twice in the Premier League this season but has made four appearances from the bench in the top flight too as manager Jurgen Klopp eases him back into the team. Oxlade-Chamberlain sustained multiple ligament damage against Roma in the Champions League two seasons ago which saw him miss the majority of the 2018/19 campaign.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan was pleased with what he saw from the Englishman and feels that he is ahead of Adam Lallana in the pecking order.

He said: “Lallana looked lively enough but he’s not the one who impressed me,” he said. “Lallana doesn’t have the electricity that Oxlade-Chamberlain has on the ball.

“He can go past opponents with pace, carry the ball forward from midfield to attack, and burst into the box to score goals.

“He’s starting to look sharp after that horrible injury and I predict big things from him this season. He’s young and hungry and has the quality to be a Premier League superstar.

“A fully fit Oxlade-Chamberlain is a massive boost to the squad.”

Critical asset

Since returning from his horrific injury towards the back end of last season, Oxlade-Chamberlain has been working hard to get himself back into the Liverpool side.

The former Arsenal man signed for the Champions League holders from the Gunners for £35m in 2017 and has scored five goals and conjured up seven assists during that time.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has gained some supporters along the way including former Everton midfielder Leon Osman, and credited him for his adaptation into Klopp’s style of play which has added more quality in the central positions, per Sky Sports, via The Boot Room.

The £120,000-a-week star has a big season ahead and could establish himself as a regular first-team starter at Anfield. However, Klopp did issue a warning at the beginning of the season that the 26-year-old must be patient as the midfielder is desperate to play regularly for Liverpool.

Whelan is right when he says he can bring a lot to Klopp’s team. After a tough second season at Anfield, it is down to Oxlade-Chamberlain himself to convince the German manager that he is ready to start regularly.

Profit Players: Everton’s 2009 capture of Seamus Coleman continues to be a bargain fee a decade on

This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.

Everton’s relationship with Seamus Coleman was one which began in January 2009, when the Toffees splashed out £150,000 (extratime.ie) to snap up a then 20-year-old right-back from Sligo Rovers ahead of competition for his signature from Celtic, Birmingham City and Ipswich Town.

David Moyes would hand Coleman his Premier League debut 297 days later as a late substitute for Johnny Heitinga against Bolton Wanderers, and 3,628 days on, Coleman remains a key man at Goodison Park, making his fee a bargain even when the Blues’ defence is not at its best.

Making his 296th outing for Everton across all competitions on Saturday against Manchester City (TransferMarkt), Coleman was one of few Toffees men to stand out for the right reasons as Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions picked their way through a faltering Blues defence.

Michael Keane was caught out of position for Gabriel Jesus’ opener by playing the Brazilian onside, while Lucas Digne – Everton’s 2018/19 Player of the Year – was run ragged by Riyad Mahrez and was fortunate not to have seen referee Michael Oliver point to the spot for a collision with Kevin de Bruyne in the second-half.

Coleman, meanwhile, was not without fault but showed why he is still the man Marco Silva names at right-back, by rolling back the years to assist Dominic Calvert-Lewin with a marauding adventure down the right-hand side – a goal which would have been his without the former England under-21 international poaching on the line with a diving header.

It has been a while since Coleman last showed himself as the creative, overlapping full-back that dazzled under Roberto Martinez on the opposing flank to Leighton Baines, and left many in awe when he outfoxed Santi Cazorla to delight the Goodison Park faithful as Everton beat Arsenal 3-0 in April 2014.

Injuries have been a regular plight of the Republic of Ireland captain’s career since then, with the 2017/18 campaign particularly short-lived with just 12 outings to his name across all competitions after fracturing his leg.

Saturday showed what Coleman is all about when on song, though, as he saw the weaknesses of a Fernandinho/Nicolas Otamendi centre-back partnership with Oleksandr Zinchenko at full-back to attack title-chasing Manchester City, and ended the day with more successful dribbles to his name than any other player on the pitch. (WhoScored)

Mahrez and Rodri led the Citizens’ charge for dribbles with two each – the same number as Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fabian Delph – but neither were a match for Coleman, who recorded eight successful dribbles from 10 vaunts down the wing, according to WhoScored data.

The 30-year-old, who has started 66) of any Everton player against City on Saturday, and the second-most successful tackles (three) – the most on the Blues’ right-hand side, with Theo Walcott and Alex Iwobi both recording none.

Coleman’s career may be winding down more so than it is gearing up, but the experienced defender still has years left in him, and is now worth substantially more than the fee Everton paid a decade ago with TransferMarkt touting the Republic of Ireland leader at £13.5million – a 900% mark-up.

West Bromwich Albion: Slaven Bilic persuaded star to remain at the Hawthorns this season

Slaven Bilic persuaded young star Rekeem Harper to remain at the Hawthorns this season, the Croatian manager has revealed.

Bilic revealed that he had multiple talks with the youngster about staying at West Bromwich Albion despite the fact his contract had run out at the club.

The news comes amid speculation surrounding the future of Oliver Burke, who after featuring in the first three games of the season, hasn’t played a single minute since.

According to the Express and Star, there is a possibility that the 25-year-old could be loaned out abroad, however, Bilic has said he is planning for him to stay.

Harper played a bit-part role at the Hawthorns last season, playing in just 13 league starts. However, he has shown his ability in a few of the games.

His performances saw him linked with many big clubs in the summer, with Tottenham Hotspur and Celtic among the outfits reportedly interested in signing the youngster.

Indeed, his ability on the ball showed in a key Championship fixture last season against promoted Norwich City. Harper started the game in central midfield in a 4-3-3 formation and completed 83.3% of his take-ons (via Total Football Analysis).

His ability on the ball is further backed up by the number of dribbles he averaged last season, 1.2, which was the fifth-highest at the club (via WhoScored).

He clearly has a decent amount of technical ability on the ball, which suggests that Bilic was right to keep a hold of him this summer. Harper had the second-highest pass completion rate in the Championship for West Brom. This showed his ability to retain possession of the ball when compared to more experienced central midfielders like Jake Livermore and Chris Brunt, who averaged less (via WhoScored).

Harper has great ability as shown last season, and it’s a blessing he is remaining at West Brom this season.

Tottenham fans hail Harry Winks as midfielder continues to impress

[ad_pod ]Tottenham Hotspur’s summer purchase of Tanguy Ndombele means that there is pressure on Harry Winks when it comes to a starting role in Mauricio Pochettino’s first XI.Winks was named in the starting side against Aston Villa on Saturday but interestingly it was the England international – rather than Ndombele or Moussa Sissoko – who was taken off to allow Christian Eriksen to enter the field.Whether the 23-year-old will be a key feature of Spurs’ first XI this season or a player who dips in and out remains to be seen. However, judging by the reaction of the club’s fans on social media, the midfielder has to start every week due to his unique skill set.Indeed, Tottenham recently posted a clip of Winks in action against Villa at the weekend, which brought a strong response from the Spurs supporters on social media.A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:
