Panesar pegs Durham back

Stumps
Scorecard
Four wickets for Monty Panesar undermined Durham as they subsided from 173 for 1 to 292 all out against Sussex in their County Championship Division One encounter at Chester-le-Street today. The visitors replied with 30 for 1, Ed Joyce falling to a brilliant right-handed diving catch by Gordon Muchall at first slip off Mitch Claydon.Durham rested Graham Onions after his excellent comeback in the win at Headingley, and with Liam Plunkett out with a thigh muscle injury they brought in Claydon and West Indian Ruel Brathwaite. On as early as the 17th over after Durham won the toss for the third successivegame, Panesar commanded respect without threatening to take wickets until hesuddenly captured his first two in his 19th and 21st overs.Ben Stokes had been tied down but two balls after advancing to drive a six over long-on he sat back to force a back-foot shot through the off-side and got an inside edge into his stumps. Dale Benkenstein popped up a catch to short leg and Panesar had bowled 25 overs for 55 runs when Scott Borthwick set about him.Crisp strokes on both sides of the wicket produced six fours off the spinner, including four off successive balls, and the young allrounder succeeded in having Panesar briefly removed from the attack. Borthwick’s knock of 35 ended when he edged to wicketkeeper Ben Brown to giveAmjad Khan a third wicket, and Panesar returned to claim two lbw verdicts and finish with 4 for 88.Durham’s slide started when Muchall miscued an attempted pull off James Anyon, skying a catch to mid-on. Muchall had taken up where Michael Di Venuto left off, the opener having scored30 off 33 balls before falling lbw to the first ball when Anyon came on for the ninth over. The left-hander was looking to work the ball to leg.Muchall raced past anchor man Will Smith and dominated a stand of 129, hitting 13 fours in making 74 off 119 balls. Smith made 59 before edging a drive at Rana Naved-ul-Hasan to first slip and wicketkeeper Michael Richardson, again deputising for the injured Phil Mustard, perished in similar fashion to give Khan his first wicket. This time the ball flew to second slip, where Joyce held a good catch.Khan’s second wicket swiftly followed when Ian Blackwell drove loosely wide of off stump and played on for 19, leaving Borthwick to harvest what runs he could accompanied by a tail lengthened by Plunkett’s absence.

Leeds trio poor in defeat to Aston Villa

Luke Ayling, Junior Firpo and Jack Harrison all struggled in Leeds United’s hugely disappointing 3-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa.

The Whites hosted Steven Gerrard’s side on Thursday evening, in what was another massive game in their fight to remain in the Premier League.

Goals from Philippe Coutinho, Matty Cash and a scarcely believable finish from Calum Chambers consigned Leeds to a grim defeat, however, as a return to the Championship feels increasingly likely.

According to Sofascore, these were the Whites’ three worst players on the night, out of those to have played at least 45 minutes of action – could all three be in danger of losing their place in Jesse Marsch’s team after letting him down this week?

Luke Ayling – 6.4

Ayling was used at centre-back by Marsch against Villa but didn’t have his best evening of the season.

The 30-year-old only managed to win one out of four aerial duels, not to mention being dribbled past a fairly alarming four times overall and losing the ball twice.

Ayling also failed to read the game well, not even mustering up a single interception against Gerrard’s men, understandably looking like someone playing out of position.

Junior Firpo – 5.8

Firpo earned the lowest rating at Elland Road, as his disappointing first season at Leeds continues.

The former Barcelona man lost possession a sizeable 18 times in total and none of the six long balls he attempted ended up finding their intended target.

Firpo committed two fouls as well, prior to being stretchered off, which summed up his evening.

Jack Harrison – 6.3

Harrison was the third Whites player deemed to be the poorest against Villa, with the winger struggling ever since his stunning hat-trick at West Ham in January.

The 25-year-old didn’t make an interception all night, like both Ayling and Firpo, and he also gave the ball away on 19 occasions.

Harrison won only one ground duel of five, too, and failed to complete a successful dribble.

AVFC: Preece makes Kalvin Phillips claim

Aston Villa remain long-term admirers of Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to Ashley Preece.

The Lowdown: Leeds flirting with relegation

Leeds have recently sacked Marcelo Bielsa after three-and-a-half years in charge at Elland Road and have brought in Jesse Marsch as his replacement.

The Whites are currently just two points off the relegation zone, and should they drop down to the Championship, you’d expect that some of their star players, including Phillips, would leave in the summer.

Villa tried to sign the England international back in 2019, but as we know, he remained in Yorkshire. Phillips did reveal last year that he was ‘swaying towards’ a move to the Midlands at the time, though, and it seems as if Villa chiefs are still keen on the 26-year-old.

The Latest: Preece’s comments on Phillips

Preece relayed comments from a Birmingham Live Q&A on Tuesday morning.

One fan hoped to see Phillips make the move to the Midlands in the summer, should Villa’s budget be in the region of £100m after keeping Philippe Coutinho. This is what Preece had to say in reply:

“Kalvin Phillips is an interesting one now off the back of Bielsa’s sacking. As we know, Villa have long been admirers of the England midfielder. I’m expecting a summer of big change, Gerrard’s already hinted at that.”

The Verdict: One to watch…

Phillips, who shared his admiration for Steven Gerrard last summer, has been out of action since December and has had to watch his Leeds team-mates struggle, so you could argue that a possible move to Villa Park may well be one to keep an eye upon.

It seems as if Leeds are in real danger of relegation, but you’d expect that Villa would still need to cough up a big fee for his services.

Liverpool, Manchester United and West Ham have all been linked with the player in recent months, with the latter preparing a £50m bid last month. A fee in that region could still be required even if Leeds drop down a division, so he could end up costing Villa a club-record fee if they do go for him.

Bravo reiterates commitment to West Indies

Allrounder Dwayne Bravo, who turned down a one-year central contract offered by the West Indies Cricket Board last month, has reiterated his commitment to West Indies cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Oct-2010Allrounder Dwayne Bravo, who turned down a one-year central contract offered by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) last month, has reiterated his commitment to West Indies cricket. Bravo was one of the three players – allrounder Kieron Pollard and captain Chris Gayle were the others – to reject the offer of a contract for the 2010-11 season.”I know my recent decision to not sign the retainer contract has caused discomfort to many in our cricketing fraternity,” Bravo said in a press release. “I have communicated to the WICB my absolute commitment to West Indies cricket. However, I needed some clarity on some items within the contract and unfortunately we could not make that happen in the time frame for signing, even with the extension provided by the WICB.”The contracts require the players to make themselves available for the West Indies team at all times, something the three players – all of whom have forged prominent careers in domestic Twenty20 competitions including the IPL – were reluctant to do.Besides West Indies, Bravo also played for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL (for an undisclosed amount), and he was signed by English county Essex just to play on finals day of the Friends Provident t20 this season. He has also turned out for Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean T20, where he made 116 runs in three innings and took six wickets with an economy rate under six.Bravo hoped he could resolve the issues surrounding the contract with the West Indies board. “I hope when we (the WICB and Bravo) get the opportunity to discuss my concerns that my small input adds value to the progress of future arrangements. I am pleased by the WICB communication on this matter and the willingness to discuss the same.”The WICB had offered contracts to 25 players on August 31 – ten of them were development contracts worth $25,000 – and gave the players until September 10 to accept them. According to the , 22 players finally accepted and three Jamaicans — Carlton Baugh, Dave Bernard Jr and Andre Russell — replaced Bravo, Pollard and Gayle.

Karunaratne, Chandimal in massive stand as SL A takes lead

Dimuth Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal shared a record 369-run stand at the SSC as Sri Lanka finished on 485 for 3

Cricinfo staff18-Aug-2010
ScorecardA record-breaking 369-run partnership between Dinesh Chandimal and Dimuth Karunaratne propelled Sri Lanka A to 485 for 3 at the close of the third day of their four-day game against South Africa A, giving them a lead of 140. Karunaratne was eventually bowled by Quinton Friend for 184 while Chandimal, having made his maiden first-class double hundred, fell just before the end of play for 244, bowled by Thandi Tshabalala. The pair had already put on 112 when the day started, and like the energiser bunny, they just kept going and going and going. Chandimal was the more aggressive of the two, bashing four sixes in addition to his 20 fours. Karunaratne, who finished one run short of his career high, hit 22 fours.Kaushal Silva was unbeaten on 35 at stumps, with Kosala Kulasekara keeping him company on 2. South Africa’s bowlers toiled all day with little reward, especially Tshabalala, who sent down 37 overs and conceded 137 runs for Chandimal’s solitary scalp. Meanwhile Friend finished the day with 1 for 99 off his 21 overs.

Celtic: Postecoglou eyes centre mid

Celtic’s ‘priority’ is to sign another central midfielder, Pete O’Rourke has told Give Me Sport.

The lowdown: Surprising

With just over a week of the January transfer window remaining, Celtic’s outlay stands at £3.82million.

They’ve signed five new players, three of whom – Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi and Matt O’Riley – can play in central midfield.

It is surprising, then, that Ange Postecoglou wants another central player, but it’s possible that the Australian views Hatate as a more of a left-sided option in the long-term.

It should also be noted that Celtic have offloaded two midfielders this month, with Liam Shaw and Ewan Henderson sealing loan moves.

The latest: Priority

O’Rourke reckons that Postecoglou’s biggest concern at present is strengthening further in the middle of the park.

“I think central midfield is the priority for Celtic right now,” he said.

The verdict: Kendouci?

Who, then, could be the next central midfielder?

Well perhaps Ahmed Kendouci is the most likely candidate. In their live transfer blog on Tuesday, The Daily Record reported that the ES Setif man had submitted a transfer request.

The Algerian top-flight club didn’t dismiss that request outright. Instead, they’ve taken some time to assess their next move.

If they agree to grant his wish, £1.17million-rated Kendouci, the most valuable player in his league according to Transfermarkt, could be the latest player to jet into Glasgow from outside Europe.

Elsewhere, there’s bad news on a Celtic loanee.

'Australia late in capitalising on T20' – Matthew Hayden

Matthew Hayden, the former Australia opener, has said Australia missed an opportunity to capitalise on the enormous potential of Twenty20 cricket when the format was still in its developing stages

Cricinfo staff13-Jun-2010Matthew Hayden, the former Australia opener, has said Australia missed an opportunity to capitalise on the enormous potential of Twenty20 cricket when the format was still in its developing stages. He claimed the desire to protect 50-over cricket – Australia’s own creation – and a primary focus on Tests and ODIs when the IPL was yet to materialise may have contributed to Australia’s delay in cashing in on Twenty20. Hayden also spoke of the need to make one-day cricket more meaningful and exciting for fans and players alike.”As a player, I think we in Australia were slow to react to T20,” Hayden, who is now part of Cricket Australia as board director, told the . ”We didn’t see much of it here for a start. It seemed to be something that was happening everywhere else. England created it and was holding competitions, but the IPL hadn’t started yet and our primary focus here was on winning every Test match and being one-day champions.”A conservative approach in trying to safeguard 50-over cricket, Hayden said, could have prompted the delay in realising the potential of Twenty20. ”There must have been some concern, being conservative as Australians tend to be, that we’ve got this great product, 50-over cricket, which KP [Kerry Packer] invented and which changed the cricketing landscape, and we didn’t want to leave it behind,” Hayden said. “We were all proud of 50-over cricket, we’d nurtured it and grew it and it was – and still is – good for the game.”But the little brother, Twenty20, isn’t little any more. He’s grown up, he’s now market leader and yelling from the mountain. Twenty20 is fuelling change.”The surging popularity of Twenty20 cricket, many believe, has threatened the viability of the 50-over format. Cricket Australia, in order to draw more people to the game, has decided to trial split-innings one-dayers next summer, with games divided into four innings of 20-25 overs each. Hayden said that, in addition to making one-day cricket more exciting, it was also important for administrators to ensure there wasn’t an overdose of the format.”I understand the fans more now than ever because, as a viewer, I want to see a game that’s exciting, innovative and entertaining,” Hayden said. “When I was in the Australian team, I could sense there was meaningless cricket going on. I always struggled to get myself up for matches against minnows. It’s not like Freddie Flintoff with his eyes wide open, bearing down on you for the Ashes. I could feel that in the team and now I can feel it from the outside, too. It needs to be dealt with.”With one-day cricket, people say they still love it, but it doesn’t have the excitement it used to, certainly not compared to T20. We have to work out when and how we play one-day cricket. It’s a pathway to the World Cup, which is still a valuable property, but it has to be programmed in a way that makes sense. Seven one-dayers at the end of a Test series isn’t [giving much] meaning.”Hayden has compiled his suggestions in a dossier, which he has submitted to the ICC. ”Greater minds than mine will act on this, but these things must be considered when discussing the game’s future,” he said. ”The intention of that dossier was to start conversations. I hope it leads to a more meaningful calendar.”The game’s gone beyond cigars and meetings in cloakrooms. The way it’s played and viewed has changed and now we need to streamline what’s important and what’s not. It brings great challenges. I think CA understands that. They know change is coming and needs to be embraced.”

Spurs source shares big Rudiger update

According to a Tottenham Hotspur source, speaking to Football Insider, a development has come to light in transfer chief Fabio Paratici’s chase to sign Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye Rudiger move…

As the Italian managing director reportedly eyes ‘quality players at zero cost’ for Spurs boss Antonio Conte, it is believed that London rival centre-half Rudiger is firmly on the agenda.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

This comes amid the German’s precarious contract situation at Stamford Bridge with Rudiger free to leave for nothing at the end of 2021/2022 as things stand.

Foreign clubs hold an advantage in the race for Chelsea’s star man given they can formally agree pre-contract moves in January but Paratici and Spurs are still contending.

In an update, Football Insider have shared the latest from their N17 sources.

The Latest: Paratici calling…

According to their information, Spurs chief Paratici is ‘calling every day’ as he keeps in constant contact with Rudiger’s camp over a move.

He is apparently a ‘top target’ with Tottenham ‘working on agreeing a deal’ this month and it believed that Paratici is heading the club’s attempt.

The site also reiterate that he is backed by chairman Daniel Levy who is willing to pay Rudiger ‘huge’ wages to tempt him into a move across London.

The Verdict: Get it done…

Out of all Tottenham’s centre-back targets, the 28-year-old is certainly up there as a real potential coup and landing him for Conte would be a stroke of genius – especially for no transfer fee.

It will be difficult considering the Lilywhites are one of Chelsea’s main capital rivals and the presence of overseas suitors in the race complicates matters further.

However, if Spurs can navigate these stumbling blocks, there is little denying he would strengthen Conte’s options to no end – with pundit Rio Ferdinand calling Rudiger an ‘animal’ and comparing him to Man City star Ruben Dias (FIVE via The Metro).

Meanwhile, another former England international in Paul Robinson certainly believes Spurs should move – telling Football Insider the international’s capture would be a ‘big signing’ and a ‘big statement’.

In other news: Paratici also sets sights on brand new target as Conte tells Spurs to sign 81-cap ‘monster’, find out more here.
