West Brom fans fume at Daryl Dike news

A number of West Brom supporters are fuming after it was confirmed that Daryl Dike will miss eight weeks of action with a hamstring injury.

The Baggies secured the signing of the American attacker from Orlando City earlier this month, bringing him in for an undisclosed fee.

It was seen as an exciting piece of business by West Brom, with Dike seen as someone who could spearhead their possible return to the Premier League between now and May.

The 21-year-old has only made one start to date for Valerien Ismael’s side, and just as he was starting life at The Hawthorns, he has been struck down by the injury curse.

Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, journalist Joe Chapman confirmed that Dike could be out for around two months, potentially missing 11 matches in the process.

Kennedy Otieno: not offered a contract•International Cricket Council

A Kenyan cricketer has attacked comments made by Kennedy Otieno regarding the current strike by the players.Otieno is one of four individuals who claim to represent the players who have been instrumental in organising a strike which led to the last-minute cancellation of a tour to England last week. The stand-off also threats Kenya’s participation in the forthcoming World Cricket League in the Netherlands.Otieno told the Nation that he had not been considered for selection because of Cricket Kenya rules that he had to play in the top league to be eligible while he was playing at a lower level. He cited that as one of the reasons the players had gone on strike.”Kennedy can only talk about his own gripes and has no real interest in player welfare,” the player, who wished to remain unidentified, told Cricinfo. “The reality is his own disciplinary record was poor. His attitude is a major problem.”A local administrator also claimed Otieno had made the decision to play for a 3rd division side “simply for money” and despite knowing the conditions of the deals offered to contracted players.Otieno cited the example of the selection of Dominic Wesongam who plays outside the top flight, as an example of double standards. “That doesn’t hold water,” the administrator said. “He was a replacement and is a youngster who shows promise.”Further investigation revealed that as Wesongam was not contracted there was no obligation for him to meet the criteria of playing in the top league.”His comments have shown he is pursuing a personal vendetta against those running the game,” the player concluded. “This about Kennedy and the players are being used as a stick for him to beat them.”

Writing on his website, reliable reporter Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Italy has shared some major transfer news out of Tottenham Hotspur involving Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

The Lowdown: Spurs in talks over Amrabat…

Spurs and transfer chief Fabio Paratici have apparently set their sights on the Morocco international as a direct replacement for club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele, if the latter completes a move to Paris-Saint Germain (Fabrizio Romano).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-2/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is believed that Antonio Conte has personally earmarked the Moroccan’s signing, with Amrabat currently impressing at the Africa Cup of Nations. The Italian is believed to want a new midfielder before next Monday’s transfer deadline, with Spurs’ talks for the 25-year-old having been ongoing since Sunday.

In a big update, Di Marzio has shared a very promising development, with the Lilywhites on track to complete a deal for the player.

The Latest: Di Marzio makes Spurs transfer claim…

The journalist has said that Spurs are ‘close to closing’ the agreement with La Viola, and Amrabat is now set to join the north London club on loan until the end of the current campaign.

Di Marzio believes that it is set to be completed ‘in the coming hours’, with Conte’s midfield ‘set to get stronger’ with the Fiorentina ace’s prospective arrival.

The Verdict: Should Spurs move?

Despite not being given much of a chance at the Artemio Franchi Stadium this season, starting just one Serie A match, Amrabat’s best season in Italy indicates that he could be a good match for Spurs if he rediscovers such form.

During the 2019/20 campaign for former club Verona, he averaged an impressive 2.2 completed dribbles per 90 in midfield whilst completing 88% of his passes (WhoScored), pointing to a composed and tidy option for Conte.

However, during that campaign, he picked up a concerning 10 yellow cards and two reds in 33 starts, with his disciplinary record coming as a potential concern.

Alas, as Conte personally seeks his signing, it is clear that the 52-year-old believes Amrabat can add a different dimension to his Spurs squad.

Hafeez hundred muscles Faisalabad to finals

Faisalabad Wolves opener Mohammad Hafeez picked the perfect time to smash the first century of the tournament, his 53-ball 100 sinking Lahore Lions in the semi-finals at the National Stadium. Hafeez’s effort was the cornerstone of Faisalabad’s 211, the first 200-plus total of the competition, which proved 45 runs too many for Lahore. After being sent in, Hafeez plundered 117 runs with Asif Hussain at 10-an-over to drive Faisalabad towards a big score. It was Hussain who was the aggressor in the early overs, before Hafeez opened out. There was no let-up in the momentum even when Hussain fell for a 34-ball 54 in the 12th over – the next over, from Waqas Ahmed, was the most expensive of the innings, Hafeez blasting a six and three fours to take 20 runs. Hafeez was dismissed in the 17th over, after crashing 16 fours and two sixes, with the score at 176, after which Waqas Ali’s cameo made sure Faisalabad crossed 200.Lahore didn’t wilt in the face of the big target, making a spirited start to the chase despite losing Nasir Jamshed early. Salman Butt and the Akmal brothers kept up with the asking-rate but no one besides Butt could sustain the onslaught. The fight went out of Lahore with the loss of Kashif Siddiq and Waqas Ahmed in consecutive overs in the middle of the innings. The asking-rate started to rise and when Butt was dismissed for 59 in the 15th over, the match was all but decided. In the other semi-final, defending champions Sialkot Stallions reached yet another domestic Twenty20 final by edging out Karachi Dolphins by seven runs in what was a rematch of last year’s title clash. It was a game with plenty of twists. Sialkot opener Imran Nazir started the match with two fours off the first two balls, then smacked a six over square leg and a four to midwicket in the second over before retiring hurt with the score at 29 in two overs. After a steady spell, Sialkot lost three wickets in the space of three overs, followed by another burst of hitting, from Shoaib Malik and Nazir, who returned after the fifth over.Sialkot had reached a strong 89 for 3 after ten when Karachi started to reel in the run-rate, with the help of the legspin of Shahid Afridi, who took wickets in three consecutive overs. Malik remained unbeaten on 40 but Sialkot never hit the gear they had in the early part of the innings to finish on a middling 149.The Karachi chase had a bizarre first 12 overs. They reached 82 for 6, but 49 of those runs came in three frenetic overs, while in the rest they struggled to score. Shahzaib Hasan started in a hurry, carting Mohammad Asif’s first over for 18 but Abdul Razzaq struck twice in the second over to check the scoring. Asif then took two wickets of his own in the third over and Karachi were down to 22 for 4.Afridi didn’t bother about the wickets lost, belting three fours and two sixes before top-edging a catch to cover to fall for a 11-ball 29. The required-rate was less than seven at that stage, so Fawad Alam and Sheharyar Ghani sensibly went about accumulating the runs in singles and twos. After Ghani was dismissed in the 12th over, Fawad brought the required-rate back under control by crashing a six and a four off two free-hits in a Abdur Rehman over. His exit in the 15th over, to a superb diving catch from Shahid Yousuf at short midwicket, turned the game but Karachi managed to take it to a stage where the last pair needed 19 off two overs. When Mohammad Sami took eight off the first three balls from Naved-ul-Hasan, the match could have tilted either way, but he was run out off the next delivery to send Sialkot through to the final.

Flower watching Kieswetter's development

England coach Andy Flower has backed Craig Kieswetter, the 22-year-old wicketkeeper batsman, to push for a place in the senior squad having impressed for England Lions during their tour of UAE.Kieswetter qualifies to play for England on Tuesday having appeared for South Africa Under-19s before moving to England four years ago. He has performed well for Somerset in both first-class and limited-overs cricket and has been in fine form for the England Lions during the tour so far, making 31, 40 not out and an unbeaten 77 in wins over Pakistan A and UAE A and has the chance to face the full side on Wednesday.”Craig Kieswetter has had a really good start,” Flower told reporters in Dubai. “He’s got runs in all three of his Lions games so far, so Wednesday is a chance for him to impress. I think he qualifies tomorrow for England and, of course, he’ll be excited about that challenge.””All of the Lions are under consideration and, quite rightly, they’ll be very hungry to press forward their case for selection. I’ve spoken to David Parsons, who is in charge of that group, and it’s been nice to see them play such powerful cricket. It is a good opportunity for them to impress, a good opportunity for them to challenge us so they’ll all be quite excited.”Kieswetter will find it difficult to dislodge Matt Prior from the Test side, but could find an opening in the shorter format, where Prior’s form has been far less prolific. Prior has moved up and down the batting order without impressing in any position, averaging 24.24 from 52 games. If Prior does keep his spot at No. 6, Kieswetter could conceivably play as a specialist batsman, after making 634 runs at 48.76 for Somerset in 50-over cricket and 248 runs in 12 Twenty20 games in 2009.His selection for England would stir some controversy after the inclusion fellow South-African raised players Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen. Geoff Miller, the national selector, admitted in January that England must be ‘careful’ about picking too many South Africans. The Lions will face the senior side on Wednesday with Pietersen eager to re-establish his position as the linchpin of the batting. Having been forced out mid-way through last summer’s Ashes series with an Achilles injury he struggled on his return to the side against South Africa and has now gone 11 months without a Test hundred. Flower, however, feels it won’t be long until Pietersen is delivering again.”He’s very hungry, he had quite a chunk of time out of international cricket and he’s come back hungry,” said Flower. “Things didn’t go perfectly well for him in South Africa but he did make some contributions, especially at the start of the series.”It was a difficult challenge for him to come back from playing no cricket to facing the South African attack on sporty wickets. It was difficult for him. This is an opportunity for him to get some serious time in the middle and for him to start contributing again in his dominant way in England victories.”

Burns names four who could leave Celtic

Albian Ajeti is among the players who could leave Celtic during the January transfer window, according to The Daily Record’s Scott Burns.

The lowdown

Celtic kicked off the window with three incomings in the form of Daizen Maeda, Yosuke Ideguchi and Reo Hatate, but it looks like Ange Postecoglou also intends to trim the excess from his Hoops squad this month.

Ajeti has made 17 appearances so far this season, but only three of those have been Premiership starts. Celtic paid £4.5million to sign this Swiss marksman from West Ham in August 2020, but he has only managed to score nine goals in his 48 outings since.

The latest

Burns wrote in The Daily Record that Celtic are ‘open to deals’ for Ajeti, Boli Bolingoli and Vassilis Barkas.

He added that Ismaila Soro ‘could also come into that equation’ after falling out of favour at Parkhead.

The verdict

If Celtic can offload all four players permanently, they could generate a healthy sum. Combine their Transfermarkt valuations – £1.35m each for Barkas and Bolingoli, £810,000 for Soro and £2.25m for Ajeti – and it comes to £5.76m.

That would put them comfortably in the black for January given that their J1 League triple swoop only cost them £2.06m overall.

Looking at it another way, it could finance the prospective permanent signing of Cameron Carter-Vickers from Tottenham Hotspur. Celtic have an option to buy the on-loan American for £6m, and Spurs may be willing to negotiate.

Tarkowski open to joining West Ham

As per reliable reporter Jack Rosser of The Evening Standard, an update has emerged involving West Ham United and Burnley defender James Tarkowski.

The Lowdown: West Ham in defender hunt…

Following serious injuries to both Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma, West Ham and manager David Moyes are in the middle of a defensive crisis with the Scotsman confirming he could now turn to January.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Many defenders have been linked with a move the London Stadium recently, including the likes of Nathan Ake and Nathaniel Phillips, with 90min also claiming that Championship trio Dael Fry, Rob Dickie and Lloyd Kelly are on the radar.

Tarkowski is another defender to have been mentioned as Rosser shares an update.

The Latest: Tarkowski open to West Ham move…

According to the ES reporter’s information, Burnley’s mainstay would be interested in a move to West Ham in January – particularly to work under Moyes.

However, he is apparently ‘relaxed’ about running down his contract with his current Turf Moor deal set to expire at the end of this season.

West Ham are also yet to make a formal approach for the player.

The Verdict: Get it done?

The Clarets value their man at £20 million, and we believe this could be quite a steep fee to pay in January given Tarkowski’s contract situation.

Lauded as ‘top drawer’ by Sean Dyche, if West Ham are to make a move for the 29-year-old, we believe they are better placed doing so when he becomes a free agent next year – even if Moyes is said to be a ‘long term admirer’.

Meanwhile, to cope with their current centre-back crisis, targets like Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic, valued at €15 million (£12.8m), and Torino’s Gleison Bremer at €18m (£15.4m), arguably come as better value for money in January – especially given their age.

Both 24-years-old, the Serie A stars would also bring more sell-on value for Moyes in the long term whilst providing that depth in the middle of his defence.

Australia out for Ashes revenge

Match facts

Sunday, August 30, 2009
Start time 14.30 (13.30 GMT)Kent’s Joe Denly impressed on his ODI debut, and could make his first Twenty20 appearance against Australia on Sunday•Getty Images

Big Picture

Dirk Nannes’ debut Twenty20 international was for Netherlands, and it resulted in a remarkable win over England in the World Twenty20. Now, however, he has switched alliance to his birth-country Australia, who have their first opportunity for Ashes revenge when they take on England in the first of two Twenty20s at Old Trafford tomorrow, ahead of seven one-dayers.Both sides dispatched their Associate opponents in recent days – Australia beating Scotland and England just about avoiding a howler against Ireland – but neither team has yet to master the shortest of formats. Australia failed to reach the group stages of the World Twenty20 while England were beaten to the semi-finals post by West Indies. Also, Australia have lost their last five matches in a row; their last win came in February.Yet both teams have key one-day players of whom much is expected. For England, a lot was desired of Ravi Bopara in the World Twenty20; he gave encouraging performances of 46, 5, 2, 37 and 55. Now, though, he finds himself in a horrible rut which forced the selectors to opt for the debutant Jonathan Trott in the final Ashes Test, and though he bounced back with a double-hundred for Essex while England’s Ashes heroes were drowning in champagne, he fell for a duck in Belfast.Meanwhile Australia will have to do without Ricky Ponting, who flew home with the Test specialists, and he’s not expected to be back until the latter stages of the subsequent seven-match ODI series. And with England’s key player, Kevin Pietersen, also absent, these two Twenty20 internationals are an opportunity for someone else in both teams to stake their name.

Form guide

(last five matches, most recent first)
England – LWLWL
Australia – LLLLL

Watch out for…

David Hussey hasn’t quite hit it big internationally as well as he has for Victoria, but his powerful first ODI hundred against Scotland has at least put him in good shape for the Twenty20s, and for Victoria in the impending Champions Twenty20 League in India. England stifled his brother until the final Ashes Test. Their Twenty20 bowlers will need to produce a similarly nagging approach against the other Hussey.Ravi Bopara: A double hundred for Essex confirmed, were it needed, that a big score was just around the corner for Bopara. After his summer horibilis in the Ashes, there is enough pride at stake for him to bounce back strongly and prove to the doubters that he can cope with, and fight back from, a terrible slump in form.

Team news

All change from the Tests, Australia pack a punch at the top of the order with Shane Watson, Dave Warner, Michael Clarke and David Hussey occupying the top four. Brett Lee managed two wickets against Scotland in his first proper international outing of his tour, and must be hell bent on proving both his fitness and class after a frustrating summer on the sidelines. Tim Paine will take the gloves to replace the injured Brad Haddin, and he got had an encouraging debut with the bat in the Scotland ODI with 29 from 38.Australia squad Shane Watson, David Warner, Michael Clarke (capt), David Hussey, Callum Ferguson, Adam Voges, James Hopes, Cameron White, Tim Paine (wk), Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Ben Hilfenhaus, Nathan Bracken, Dirk Nannes.Joe Denly might have booked himself in for these Twenty20s following a mature, cornerstone knock 67 against Ireland, an innings without which England’s Ashes bubble might have exploded fantastically. Paul Collingwood, the captain, continues to bat without conviction, and much rests on the shoulders of England’s latest pin-up megastar, Stuart Broad. How often are we going to be saying that about him in the next few years?England (possible) 1 Ravi Bopara, 2 Joe Denly, 3 Owais Shah, 4 Jonathan Trott, 5 Paul Collingwood (capt), 6 Matt Prior (wk), 7 Luke Wright, 8 Adil Rashid, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Tim Bresnan, 11 Ryan Sidebottom.

Pitch and conditions

Well, it’ll be warmer than Edinburgh. That much is certain, though only a touch warmer: the BBC predict a chilly 17°c for Manchester on Sunday with showery “light rain” forecast throughout the day, which could force the involvement of the rain gods themselves, Duckworth and Lewis.

Stats and trivia

  • This is only the second Twenty20 international staged at Old Trafford. The last match was in 2008 against New Zealand, which England won by nine wickets.
  • And this is the fourth Twenty20 between the two countries. Australia have won the last two – played in January and September of 2007 – by 77 runs and eight wickets respectively.
  • England have won eight out of 20 Twenty20s, all of which involved Kevin Pietersen, who is absent in this series through injury.
  • Australia have a better record, winning 11 out of 23, and they score quicker, too: 8.48 runs-per-over to England’s 8.10.
  • Michael Clarke has twice led Australia, in December 2007 and February 2008, winning them both.
  • August is traditionally the wettest month for Manchester, averaging 79mm of rain and fighting off strong competition from November and December (78mm). It is also the warmest, with a mean temperature (in every respect) of 20c.

Quotes

“I’m just glad it’s out of the way.”
“The Holland one was a World Cup so that was a pretty big full house at Lord’s. This one here, playing in Edinburgh, a beautiful spot, it’s my first game playing for Australia, where I’ve been brought up. It’s a pretty big deal.”
