Uganda give Kenya food for thought

Kenya ended a less-than-convincing year with a 2-1 series win against neighbours Uganda, but a comprehensive defeat in the dead rubber was not the ideal way to conclude 2010

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Dec-2010Kenya ended a less-than-convincing year with a 2-1 series win against neighbours Uganda, but a comprehensive defeat in the dead rubber was not the ideal way to conclude 2010.The first two matches at Mombasa Sports Club went according to script. Kenya batted first, posted a formidable total and then Uganda came up well short. In the opening game Collins Obuya (106) made more than half Kenya’s 207 and then 19-year-old left-arm seamer Lucas Oluoch took 4 for 32 as Uganda limped to 123 all out.Two days later Alex Obanda put a duck in the opening game behind him in making exactly 100, and aided by Obuya’s unbeaten 71, Kenya made 304 for 4. Although Uganda’s batsmen fared slightly better, their 210 was still a long way short of making a match of it.With the series done and dusted, coach Eldine Baptiste wanted a clean sweep but instead he got a lacklustre display from his top-order batsmen. Roger Mukasa’s 86 took Uganda to 223 all out, a score well within Kenya’s sights, but instead they crumbled to 53 for 5 and only David Obuya’s defiant 68 enabled them to keep the margin of defeat under three figures.

Everton: ECHO delivers Patterson update

Everton are reportedly closing in on the signing of highly-rated Crusaders youngster Jack Patterson, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The lowdown: An Irish connection

The Blues have developed somewhat of a penchant for signing talented Irish youngsters as Patterson prepares to follow Ballymena United goalkeeper Dylan Graham in making the switch to Goodison Park.

Having made a senior professional debut aged just 15, the now 16-year-old has made four appearances for the NIFL Premiership outfit, amassing 155 minutes in the process.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Despite his tender years, Patterson could already be preparing to make a huge transfer move…

The latest: Deal ‘expected’

As per a source for the Liverpool Echo, Everton are now ‘expected’ to sign the three-cap Northern Ireland youth international.

It’s claimed that the deal was put in place with Rafa Benitez at the helm while there was no director of football at the club.

The report states that defensive midfielder Patterson, who was described as a ‘baller’ by teammate Johnny Black, is ‘set to make the move’ to Merseyside as the Toffees ‘intensify their academy scouting efforts’ moving forwards.

The verdict: Smart business

Whilst many of the Blues faithful will be crying out for first-team reinforcements to bolster Frank Lampard’s squad, a need to sign talented youngsters with one eye on the future cannot be forgone.

Recently Everton have seen the fruits of their academy labours come to the fore as Anthony Gordon, Jarrad Branthwaite and Lewis Dobbin have all made some impact for the senior side.

If the Blues are going to compete in the upper reaches of the Premier League in years to come, developing from within will be crucial, and hopefully, Patterson is one who will be starring in Blue down the line.

Warriors hope to keep home interest alive

Chennai Super Kings need to win to have any chance of progressing to the semi-finals, while Warriors can make it even if they lose by a small margin

The Preview by Siddarth Ravindran21-Sep-2010Match factsWednesday, September 22
Start time 1730 (1530 GMT)Davey Jacobs has been in top form for Warriors•AFP

Big PictureFirst up the basics: Chennai Super Kings need to win to have any chance of progressing to the semi-finals, while Warriors can make it even if they lose by a small margin. For example, if they are chasing 160, they can afford to lose by no more than 27 runs, while if Warriors score 160 batting first, they’ll have to ensure Chennai take at least 16.4 overs to reach their target.
The presence of two weak teams – Wayamba and Central Districts – in Group A means there’s a chance that a side can get knocked out from the Champions League for losing only one game in the tournament. Warriors have won all their matches so far, but a big defeat against Chennai Super Kings will mean there will be no home teams in the semi-finals. Similarly, Victoria have swept all before them after flopping in their opening game, but still have to nervously watch the Warriors-Chennai match to know their fate. The superb form of Warriors’ captain and opener, Davey Jacobs, is one reason why they are best-placed to progress but the top-order’s effectiveness has hidden a potential weakness – a shallow middle order. Johan Botha looks to be playing a position too high at No. 6 but Jacobs wasn’t too concerned by it. “We have Nicky Boje, who comes after Botha, and has scored couple of ODI hundreds,” Jacobs said. “So I am very confident about my team’s batting. We have done everything we could to get here. We shall continue to do those basics.”For Chennai, the department to worry about is probably the bowling. While they have two world-class performers in Doug Bollinger and Muttiah Muralitharan, their local bowlers, medium-pacer L Balaji and offspinner R Ashwin, need to bounce back from the pasting they received in the previous match.Team newsOne decision Chennai will have to make is regarding which Australian batsman to pick: Matthew Hayden was out of touch in his two outings in the tournament, while Michael Hussey scored at less than run-a-ball against Victoria. Albie Morkel’s fitness is also a source of worry.Chennai Super Kings (probable): 1 M Vijay, 2 Matthew Hayden / Michael Hussey, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 S Badrinath, 5 MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), 6 S Anirudha, 7 Albie Morkel / Justin Kemp, 8 Doug Bollinger, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 L Balaji.Justin Kreusch has had little to do with bat or ball in the previous two matches but his ability to bat should win him a place in a team with a longish tail. Warriors may also toy with the idea of playing Garnett Kruger in place of one of the three frontline quicks.Warriors (probable): 1 Davey Jacobs (capt), 2 Ashwell Prince, 3 Colin Ingram, 4 Craig Thyssen, 5 Mark Boucher (wk), 6 Johan Botha, 7 Justin Kreusch, 8 Nicky Boje, 9 Rusty Theron, 10 Makhaya Ntini, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe.Watch out for …Colin Ingram will be celebrating his maiden call-up to the South African team, a reward for topping the run-charts in the Pro20 to lead the Warriors to the title. He has been off-colour in the Champions League, and Wednesday’s crunch match could be the one where he shows off his talent to a wider audience. As the leading run-getter after three seasons of the IPL, Suresh Raina’s importance to Chennai as a batsman is well-known. Against Victoria on Saturday, he showcased his talents as a spinner, taking four wickets and was even entrusted with the responsibility of bowling the tense final over of a tight game.Key contestsJacobs v Bollinger: Jacobs’ big-hitting has been pivotal to Warriors’ three consecutive wins, and he has also boldly spoken of how important he can be to South Africa in the Twenty20 format. He has been overlooked for South Africa’s Twenty20 series against Zimbabwe and Pakistan. A confident performance against Bollinger, an in-form quick bowler in a high-pressure match, will give the selectors another reminder of his ability.
Makhaya Ntini v Chennai: From being one of the world’s leading bowlers, Ntini has regressed so much that not only does he not get a much of a look-in for South Africa these days, even his IPL team hasn’t given him an opportunity in two seasons. Wednesday’s match will be a chance for him to show Chennai what they are missing.Stats and trivia The match features the two most economical bowlers (minimum five overs) of the tournament: Johan Botha (4.83) and Muttiah Muralitharan (5.38) Albie Morkel is mostly known in Twenty20s for his big-hitting lower down the order. With 104 wickets, he is also the second-highest wicket-taker in the format, behind Dirk Nannes

Somerset go top on productive day

When Charl Willoughby removed Phil Mustard in mid-afternoon at Chester-le-Street, Somerset went top of the Championship table but it is still far too early to tell who will finish in that prized position

When Charl Willoughby removed Phil Mustard in mid-afternoon at Chester-le-Street, Somerset went top of the Championship table but it is still far too early to tell who will finish in that prized position. The visitors, though, aren’t going to die wondering with Marcus Trescothick’s free-flowing 75 leading a quick-scoring reply as Somerset reached 226 for 4 at the close and within sight of a useful advantage. With Nottinghamshire having lost so much time at Old Trafford they are facing an uphill task to secure the 22-point win that gives them the title regardless, so Somerset may not need a maximum bonus-point victory here, either. Their best chance is to bat positively, following Trescothick’s lead, and then hope that Durham’s fight diminishes as the season draws to a close. The scoring rate of 4.77 shows that is their plan as James Hildreth and Peter Trego continued to unfurl their shots despite three quick wickets falling for 48 in seven overs.Trescothick’s fifty came from 65 balls and he was doing as he pleased with some friendly bowling, although the West Indian Ruel Brathwaite bowled an energetic spell on his Durham debut. It was Trescothick’s attacking instincts that brought his downfall as he drove at Ben Harmison – the brother of Steve who, like a host of Durham bowlers, is injured – and edged through to the keeper.Arul Suppiah had pushed a return catch to Liam Plunkett to end an opening stand of 48, but Nick Compton added 84 with Trescothick for the second wicket. Compton played some superb off-side shots, but immediately after hitting his ninth boundary was given lbw against Harmison. Somerset continued to lose their way when Craig Kieswetter played a horrid shot across the line at Chris Rushworth to leave them 180 for 4. There is a fine line between aggression and recklessness, but neither Hildreth or Trego went into their shells. It made for compelling cricket.Yet, this title race could still come down to the autumn weather. The North East was certainly the place to be on Tuesday as a bright and breezy September day meant valuable playing time, with only a brief shower during the evening session. The irony probably wasn’t lost on Somerset, either, that Nottinghamshire walked off at Old Trafford with the sun shining. On a flat pitch it was a commendable effort from Somerset’s attack as their seam bowling is in the workmanlike rather than fearsome bracket. Steve Kirby’s arrival from Gloucestershire for next season will boost their resources considerably. Here, though, Ben Phillips collected four, Willoughby three and Trego a important brace shortly before lunch.Alfonso Thomas bowled without any luck on the opening day but claimed a deserved wicket in the third over of the morning when Dale Benkenstein’s fine innings ended as he pushed away from his body and edged low to Trescothick at first slip. It gave Somerset their first bonus point and closed the gap on Nottinghamshire to just one.Gordon Muchall’s almost three-hour vigil ended with a thin edge to the wicketkeeper off Phillips. Harmison continued his promising finish to the season with an obdurate innings as he and Ian Blackwell added 57 in 16 overs for the fifth wicket. Blackwell, whose average this summer is a modest 32, lived dangerously with a wild, end-of-season, swipe against Willoughby and also drove short of cover before playing around one from Trego to depart lbw.Trego, a valuable cricketer who could find himself on the Lions tours this winter, then delivered Somerset their second bonus point, lifting them level with Nottinghamshire, when Harmison’s resistance ended with a weak pull that looped to square leg.Trescothick employed the twin spin attack of Suppiah and Murali Kartik to reach the second new-ball quickly and the move paid off when Scott Borthwick edged low to first slip against Phillips’ first ball back. Plunkett was lucky to make 11 as Willoughby beat him three times in a row before an edge flew to second slip, then the Championship lead was secured when Mustard inside-edge into his stumps. It was still Somerset’s advantage at the close, but it remains a three-way fight for the trophy.

Rangers keen on deal for PL defender

The January transfer window is coming to a close and a big Rangers claim has emerged as they potentially look to add to their squad…

What’s the talk?

Transfer insider Dean Jones has revealed that the Gers are looking to sign a centre-back from an English Premier League club before the end of the month.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Rangers are interested in Dan Quick from Crystal Palace on a permanent deal, but there are others trying to sign him too, including Leicester, Southampton, Dortmund and PSV.”

Excitement

This update will surely leave Giovanni van Bronckhorst feeling excited for several reasons.

Firstly, it shows that they are competing with some top clubs to bring him in, with Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund and 2016 Premier League winners Leicester also in the running. It suggests that Ross Wilson is identifying talented players as he is looking to sign prospects who are wanted by other top European outfits.

Van Bronckhorst will also be excited by the prospect of having a young centre-back with whom to work. He could mould him into the perfect defender for the system he wants to play, with a view to him replacing a current first-team stalwart in the future.

Having a player in the academy who could slot straight into the first team further down the line if needed could alleviate the stress of needing to dip into the transfer market to find a replacement if a player is sold. For example, if Calvin Bassey is sold to a Premier League team in 18 months’ time, Quick could then step into his place in the XI if he is able to fulfill his potential.

The 19-year-old has played 22 times for Palace at under-18 level and four times for the under-23s, scoring three goals and providing two assists from centre-back. Whilst this is not an abundance of data from which to judge him, it does suggest that he excelled sufficiently for the under-18s to earn a step-up to the under-23s.

In his one appearance in the EFL Trophy this season, he recorded an excellent SofaScore rating of 7.50 against Portsmouth’s senior side. He made three tackles, five clearances and two interceptions that night, whilst completing 80% of his attempted passes and creating one chance, as per SofaScore.

This suggests that he is capable of delivering solid defensive displays whilst also using the ball efficiently in possession. Quick could therefore suit Rangers, as they average 63.6% possession per game in the Premiership and need players who are comfortable on the ball, as the Palace youngster appears to be.

Langeveldt set to join Derbyshire for T20

Charl Langeveldt, the South African fast bowler, is set to join Derbyshire for their Friends Provident Twenty20 campaign. Langeveldt, who had a successful stint with Derbyshire two seasons ago, will return to the county, pending the completion of the necessary paperwork with Cricket South Africa, and the obtaining of a work permit.Once the deal is complete, Langeveldt will be registered as an overseas player for the domestic Twenty20 competition, alongside Loots Bosman. Their presence means Chris Rogers, Derbyshire’s Australian captain, would then be given a break after more than two years of non-stop cricket spread between England and Australia, with Greg Smith set to captain the Twenty20 squad.”Charl is a vastly experienced campaigner and one of the very best in the world at bowling in the short form of the game,” said John Morris, Derbyshire’s Head of Cricket. “I hope he can help us achieve results in the competition in 2010, but our young bowlers can also learn a lot from his methods and execution, especially when bowling in those all important death and powerplay overs.”Langeveldt’s proposed signing comes after a World Twenty20 campaign in which the bowler excelled despite his team’s early exit. Only Dirk Nannes took more wickets than him in the competition and Langevedlt’s economy rate of 6.50 was better than anybody else in the top five wicket-takers.Derbyshire have also secured the services of Wes Durston for the tournament. Durston, 29, ran to a blistering hundred as the Unicorns – a team made up of the best un-contracted cricketers in the country – chased down a record 326 to beat Sussex in their Clydesdale Bank 40 match at Arundel last week.Durston cracked 117 from just 68 deliveries in that match, and his innings grabbed Derbyshire’s attention as they looked to bolster their batting line-up ahead of the domestic Twenty20 competition.”Wes put himself in the shop window for counties with his magnificent innings against Sussex and we are delighted to have secured his services for our Twenty20 campaign,” said Morris.”Form and confidence are very important in cricket, particularly the short forms of the game, and Wes is brimming with both at the present time. He will add competition for places in our batting line-up and that can only be healthy as we strive for a successful campaign.”Durston previously spent eight seasons with Somerset from 2002 to 2009, averaging 38.35 in first-class cricket as well as scoring 386 runs in 38 Twenty20 appearances. He will be available to Derbyshire throughout the Friends Provident Twenty20 competition, but will not be considered for County Championship selection.

A vida fora do futebol
