Glamorgan v Essex
With a second match on Sunday, Essex will have played four matches before some teams have played two. Having lost both their matches last week Essex will be desperate to record their sixth consecutive win over Glamorgan who began their campaign with an explosive victory over Surrey. Essex’s top order, which has struggled, is bolstered by the return to fitness of Mark Pettini and Jesse Ryder, while Ravi Bopara is also back from the IPL. Jaik Mickleburgh and Dan Lawrence have been left out from last week’s squad while Tom Wesley still misses out with an injured thumb. Glamorgan have made one change to their squad with David Lloyd out with injury. Wayne Parnell still isn’t fully fit and misses out again.Hampshire v Kent
Hampshire, who are aiming for a sixth successive Finals Day appearance, have named an unchanged squad from their convincing victory over Essex last Friday. They will, however, give a late fitness test to Fidel Edwards who is suffering from a shoulder injury. Kent also won their opening night fixture, beating Sussex in a tight match and have made one change, with Adam Riley replacing the injured James Tredwell. The visitors have former Hampshire pair David Griffiths and Matt Coles in their squad.Somerset v Sussex
Somerset were one of two counties who didn’t play in the opening week and get their season underway against Sussex, who fell short in a tense run-chase against Kent on Friday. Somerset are still awaiting the arrival of Chris Gayle, who is on IPL duty, but they do have Pakistan bowler Sohail Tanvir available. Sussex have made one change to their squad from last week, with Tymal Mills replacing Steve Magoffin despite news emerging this week that he has a congenital back condition that could ultimately end his career. Jimmy Anyon, Lewis Hatchett, Matt Prior, Ajmal Shahzad and Ashar Zaidi all remain unfit.Lancashire v Durham
Lancashire, who are unbeaten in their last seven T20 matches against Durham and have won nine of their last eleven home matches against them, will be seeking to build on their last-ball victory against Leicestershire. Durham also won their opening match, beating Northamptonshire convincingly after reducing them to 41 for 5 in pursuit of 175 before the rain came. There is a possibility Lancashire could hand James Faulkner his debut after his IPL season was ended on Wednesday with Saqib Mahmood left out. Durham have not named Graham Onions, who didn’t play last week, in their squad and added Paul Coughlin and Michael Richardson.Leicestershire v Derbyshire
A big crowd is expected for Leicestershire’s first home match of the season against local rivals Derbyshire, with 4500 tickets already sold and a near sell-out expected. Derbyshire have expanded their 13-man squad from their opening night defeat against Yorkshire to 14 to include allrounder Wayne White, who is returning from injury. Nathan Rimmington, Wayne Madsen, Tony Palladino and Jonathan Clare all miss out due to injury. Neither Aadil Ali nor Angus Robson played in Leicestershire’s defeat to Lancashire last week and they have been left out of their squad this time around with Neil Pinner, who has never played a T20 match, coming in.Nottinghamshire v Yorkshire
Yorkshire, who won their opening fixture against Derbyshire last week, will be seeking their first victory in four matches against Nottinghamshire, having lost seven of the last eight meetings between the two counties. Glenn Maxwell will make his Yorkshire debut after arrivign from the IPL; Nottinghamshire will be without Alex Hales who has gone in the opposite direction to join Mumbai Indians. Yorkshire have expanded their 13-man squad to include Maxwell, while Nottinghamshire, who beat Warwickshire in their opening fixture, have replaced Hales with Brett Hutton.Warwickshire v Worcestershire
Defending champions Warwickshire will be looking to bounce back from their defeat against Nottinghamshire when they host Worcestershire, who are playing their first match of the season. Warwickshire have made one change to their squad, leaving out Keith Barker for Recordo Gordon. Worcestershire warmed up for the season on Thursday by plundering 236 for 2 against Shropshire, before conceding nearly 200 in defence. They will be without overseas signing Colin Munro, who remains at the IPL with Mumbai Indians, but still boast Sachithra Senanayake.

Klinger was out for 151, also perishing to the pair of Cooper and Lawford. It was Voges’ career-best first-class score, bettering his unbeaten 235 last season.Ashton Agar (58*) then assumed charge and struck a rapid fifty, assisted by handy contributions from Shaun Marsh (33) and Tom Beaton (22). Ban without inquiry surprises Rupganj chairman

Lutfar Rahman Badal, the Legends of Rupganj chairman, has said that he was surprised at the speed with which the BCB’s disciplinary committee handed him a life ban

Mohammad Isam11-Dec-2014Lutfar Rahman Badal, the Legends of Rupganj chairman, has said that he was surprised at the speed with which BCB’s disciplinary committee handed him a life ban. He said that his letter to the board president, dated November 30, concerning the standard of umpiring was not replied to, neither any investigation held.”The disciplinary committee took the decision in a matter of hours which really surprised me,” Badal told ESPNcricinfo. “First it was the CCDM [Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis] that temporarily banned me without basing their decision on any report from the match referee, which should have been the proper way. Furthermore, I think the BCB usually takes disciplinary decision after recommendations from the disciplinary committee but here it was different.”I had raised the topic of umpiring in my matches with the BCB president in a letter but those were not taken into account. I would have liked to see the BCB take those concerns seriously and investigate the matter.”But it was Lutfar’s December 3 outburst against the BCB president Nazmul Hassan and two other directors that brought on the severe sentence. In addition, Rupganj joint secretary Tarikul Islam and team manager Sabbir Ahmed received five and three-year bans for allegedly intimidating and abusing match officials. On Tuesday, the decision was taken after a meeting of the disciplinary committee, which was attended by a number of board directors, apart from the chairman Sheikh Sohel. The committee did not summon the Rupganj officials to defend their cases. They took the decision a few hours after the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) had put a temporary ban on Lutfar and Tarikul. On the same afternoon, Lutfar had apologised to all the concerned parties for his verbal attack. On December 3, after Rupganj’s Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match against Prime Bank Cricket Club Lutfar used objectionable language towards BCB directors Khaled Mahmud and Ismail Haider Mallick, and said that Hassan was aware of every “wrongdoing”. He also accused board officials of rigging league schedules and umpire appointments in his club’s matches. The outburst drew sharp criticism from the BCB directors, club officials, the players’ association and the umpires’ association. They held a press conference on December 8 demanding a ban on Lutfar.Legends of Rupganj, formerly known as Gazi Tank Cricketers, are the defending Dhaka Premier League champions.

The visitors trail Bangladesh A by 167 runs after the hosts were bowled out for 258 earlier in the day.Jubair, who took a four-for on his first-class debut during the first unofficial Test, broke a 42-run, fourth-wicket stand between Mark Vermeulen and Brian Chari by bowling Vermeulen for 31. In the next five deliveries, he removed Joylord Gumbie and Taurai Muzarabani as the visitors slipped to 66 for 6 after they had started off losing their top three for 12 by the fourth over. Shahadat Hossain took two of the first three wickets and ended the day with 2 for 15 in four overs. Warriors wait on Hogan

Western Australia have left room in their state squad for the reliable seam bowler Michael Hogan as he ponders whether or not to return for another Sheffield Shield summer in between his commitments for Glamorgan

Western Australia have left room in their state squad for the reliable seam bowler Michael Hogan as he ponders whether or not to return for another Sheffield Shield summer in between his commitments for Glamorgan in the English County Championship.Hogan had been thought lost to the Warriors in 2013 when he chose to use an England passport to play for Glamorgan as a local player, however a tweak of eligibility rules by Cricket Australia – designed principally in a failed attempt to lure Middlesex’s Sam Robson to contend for a berth as an Australia opening batsman – allowed him to play in 2013-14.He proceeded to pluck 36 wickets at 25.80 for WA, helping their thrust towards the Shield final, but is yet to decide on coming back for another season. Hogan is understandably rated highly by Glamorgan having harvested 67 wickets at 20.53 in the northern summer of 2013.WA’s coach Justin Langer is hopeful of retaining Hogan. “We would love to have him back next year, but we need to work closely with Glamorgan, his manager and Michael,” he said when announcing WA’s state squad for next summer. “If we can get him back it’d be a great bonus for everyone.”The recruitment of Michael Klinger from South Australia to cover for the retirement of Marcus North is the only major change to the WA line-up for next season, following a successful 12 months of regeneration and development in the previously moribund west. The talented young batsman Tom Beaton has returned to the contract list after making his debut during Mickey Arthur’s tenure as state coach, while the seam and swing bowler Andrew Tye has been rewarded for strong club form with his first state deal.Burt Cockley, Luke Towers and Liam Davis have all lost their state contracts, the latter humbugged by a serious finger injury that precluded him from playing any Shield matches last summer.”The only reason Liam’s not in there is because he’s had a career-threatening finger injury, because of that we weren’t able to offer him a contract this year,” Langer said. “He’ll need to work out if his finger allows him to play cricket again. If he can get back on the park there’s no reason why he can’t play for Western Australia again.”Western Australia squad: Ashton Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Tom Beaton, Michael Beer, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Ryan Duffield, Marcus Harris, Mitchell Johnson (CA), Michael Klinger, Simon Mackin, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh (CA), Joel Paris, John Rogers, Nathan Rimmington, Ashton Turner, Andrew Tye, Adam Voges, Sam Whiteman. Rookies: William Bosisto, Hilton Cartwright, Matt Dixon, David Moody, Jaron Morgan

All-round Philander shines for South Africa

Scorecard File photo: Vernon Philander top-scored for South Africa with an unbeaten 58•Associated Press

South Africa may end up looking neither to Wayne Parnell nor Ryan McLaren as their all-round solution in the future because Vernon Philander could provide the selectors with an alternative. Philander top-scored with 58 on the first of the three-day tour match in preparation for the upcoming Australia series in which the South African shadow Test team, sans AB de Villiers, experienced top-order struggles.De Villiers was not included in either XI because he is yet to fully recover from hand surgery, but he was at the Wanderers. He was put through some fielding drills and is expected to be fit for the first Test next week. His absence, nonetheless, was obvious in the batting department as the top order struggled in tricky conditions. With overcloud and the left-arm angle of Beuran Hendricks, South Africa would have relished the challenge, but not the outcome. Graeme Smith would have been the first man out when he edged McLaren to second slip, but the bowler had overstepped. The pressure did not ease there though as Hendricks was replaced by fellow southpaw Wayne Parnell. The angle eventually had the better of the top order with the first four wickets all falling to the left-handers. Alviro Petersen played on to his stumps, Smith was caught at backward point and Hashim Amla snaffled behind. The South African XI were 51 for 3 shortly after the first hour was complete, and things looked very shaky.Faf du Plessis was stationed at No.4, an indication he will bat there in the Tests, and opened his scoring with a couple of crisp drives. Du Plessis and JP Duminy put on the first partnership of substance as their 59-run stand saw them take advantage of an inconsistent Parnell, who despite his pace, was wayward. However, Duminy eventually top-edged to Dean Elgar at third slip when on 36.Thami Tsolekile, playing in de Villiers place, became the first victim of offspinner Simon Harmer, who found substantial turn throughout the day. Tsolekile was bowled by a delivery that turned into him, to put the South African XI back into a tricky position at 122 for 5.Robin Peterson scored quick runs, reverse-sweeping Harmer for three boundaries in the same over, including two sixes, but the bowler had the last laugh. Peterson was enjoying his hit out so much, he ended up scooping one straight to Harmer at mid-on to give the tireless McLaren some reward.Du Plessis also fell to a silly shot, smashing Harmer straight to be caught by the bowler and it was up to the lower order to paper over any concerns that may have grown. Dale Steyn and Philander, who last batted together at this ground in the Test against India, made batting look simple as the clouds cleared and the sun peeped through. The pair played with relative freedom and punished Parnell and Harmer for anything too full or wide. After Steyn was dismissed, Philander and Rory Kleinveldt put on the highest partnership of the innings. Their 62-run stand was carefree and showed their potential to become lower-order all-rounders in the Test side. With neither Parnell nor McLaren making themselves a clear candidate for that role, the batting of Philander and Kleinveldt would have been an aspect the selectors have made note of.The South African XI’s bowlers fared better than their batsmen. Philander claimed the first wicket when Reeze Hendricks was out lbw. The Peterson-Harmer romance continued when Harmer was sent in as a nightwatchman. He offered Peterson a return catch in his first over, which he duly pulled off, diving to his right.Peterson also had Elgar’s scalp to his name after the batsman hit a full toss in the air to short mid-wicket, where du Plessis pulled of a stunner. Quinton de Kock too should have walked back on 19, but Morkel put down a simple return catch, as the South African Composite XI ended the day precariously placed at 24 for 3.
