Divock Origi linked with move to Fenerbahce

Liverpool striker Divock Origi has been linked with a summer loan move to Fenerbahce having fallen out of favour at Anfield this season.

The Lowdown: Bit-part player for Reds

The Belgian has enjoyed a memorable Reds career, scoring in the 2019 Champions League final and bagging massive goals against the likes of Barcelona and Everton down the years.

However, despite Jurgen Klopp describing him as “unbelievably important for us” back in December 2019, the 25-year-old has been a peripheral figure for Liverpool of late, making just two Premier League starts in the 2020/21 season.

It has become clear that, despite those comments, the £14.4m-rated attacker isn’t a key part of Klopp’s plans moving forward, and he has now been linked with a summer exit from Anfield.

The Latest: Fenerbahce keen on Origi

According to Fotomac [via Sport Witness], Fenerbahce are eyeing up a loan move for Origi this summer, with a view to signing him permanently in the future.

The Turkish giants are keen on bolstering their attacking options amid a projected summer clearout and see the Belgium international as an ideal man to come in as a solution.

The Verdict: Time to leave

Origi will always be loved by many Liverpool supporters for his past achievements, but the Reds have moved on without him this season and he should be sold if the price is right. Ideally he would leave on a permanent deal in the summer, but a loan exit would also make sense as it would allow others to fill his role as a squad player.

Someone like Harvey Elliott would probably now be a better option than Origi, for example, with the teenaher having scored seven goals and registered 11 assists in the Championship for Blackburn Rovers last season.

BCCI not keen to host ICC KnockOut tourney

With the ticklish question of playing cricket against Pakistan yet to be sorted out, the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Wednesday said it was “not necessarily keen” to host the ICC KnockOut Tournament next year

16-May-2001With the ticklish question of playing cricket against Pakistan yet to be sorted out, the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Wednesday said it was “not necessarily keen” to host the ICC KnockOut Tournament next year.”We have asked the ICC (International Cricket Council) to come out with the details,” Board Secretary Jaywant Lele told reporters in New Delhi today. After a visit to the North Zone Cricket Academy here, Lele said “we don’t know the terms and conditions, particularly revenue sharing, offered to Bangladesh and Kenya for hosting the previous editions. This whole matter will be discussed at ICC’s annual meeting in London in June. Till then we are not necessarily keen to host the tournament”.While Lele did not mention the issue of Pakistan’s participation, Sports Minister Uma Bharti is on record saying that the ban on playing cricket was on bilateral series between India and its neighbour and there was no hitch about participating in multi-lateral tournaments.Bharti had also assured full support, including tax exemption for thetournament when ICC President Malcolm Speed met her in New Delhi last month.India had hosted the 1987 World Cup jointly with Pakistan and Sri Lanka joined these two countries for co-hosting the 1996 edition.Weatherwise too, Lele said September, when the tournament is proposed to be held, would not be a suitable time of the year as it would be raining all over the country except, maybe, in Chennai and Bangalore. The BCCI secretary confirmed that India would be going to Australia inSeptember this year to participate in a three-match one-day series against that country. The first two matches, to be played on September 14 and 16, would be indoors in Melbourne while the final game on September 18, would be outdoors in Brisbane. “The arrangement for the series is on a reciprocal basis and in return, Australia will play three one-dayers in India next year,” Lele said. After inspecting the facilities offered to the trainees at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground, Lele said he was happy and satisfied with the way the National Cricket Academy and its zonal branches were functioning. “I have visited all except the East Zone Academy which is being visited by Board consultant Geoff Marsh of Australia in a day or two,” he said.Asked about reports from Australia that its players Adam Gilchrist andColin Miller and coach John Buchanan had received anonymous phone calls during the third and final Test against India at Chennai in March, Lele retorted “Ask them. Who knows who rang them up? Was it an Indian or an Australian? BCCI does not come into the picture”.The Indian Board has since treated the matter as closed.

Ryan Mason handed Spurs injury blow

New Tottenham Hotspur caretaker Ryan Mason will be without one of his biggest stars when he takes the dugout for the first time this evening…

What’s the latest?

The 29-year-old was appointed on a temporary basis until the end of the season following the shock departure of Jose Mourinho earlier this week, and he’s been thrown straight into the deep end as his side host Southampton in the Premier League.

His task of picking up a result will be made harder as he’ll be without the services of leading talisman Harry Kane, according to Dan Kilpatrick at the Evening Standard.

Top goalscorer Kane hobbled off with an ankle injury after bagging himself a brace to rescue a draw against Everton at the weekend, and even though he left Goodison Park without the help of a protective boot or crutches, he has not featured in training since.

Kilpatrick confirmed that he would miss tonight’s encounter and that he is now a serious doubt for their Carabao Cup final on Sunday afternoon, too.

Nightmare start

In terms of potentially disastrous starts, this would surely be up there for Mason as he’ll have to go into battle, in the midst of the recent negativity off the pitch and the need to pick up results, without his leading talisman.

Spurs’ reliance on Kane cannot be understated, whatsoever.

The 27-year-old has scored 21 goals in the Premier League this season, seven more than the next best, Heung-min Son (14), and then when you factor in his squad-leading 13 assists it means he has accounted for a whopping 63% of all Spurs’ goals scored in the English top-flight.

[snack-amp-story url=https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-and-recent-gossip” title=”Read this week’s Spurs news, latest transfer rumours and more!]

His importance to the side was emphasised last season, in particular. In his absence from the start of the year, the north London outfit would go onto drop out of the Champions League, the race for the top four and all domestic cup competitions.

They’ve very much done the same this season under Mourinho and with Kane, but as they sit just five points behind fourth-place going into kickoff, there’s every chance that Mason could lead them into European contention once again.

Though those chances have now been dealt a huge blow as the task is even harder without the England skipper.

It also leaves Mason with an instant dilemma – does he trust Carlos Vinicius, who Mourinho regularly snubbed from Premier League selection, or will one of Son or Gareth Bale lead the line instead?

Either way, none of the trio are as prolific and important as Kane, so it will be interesting to see how the newly-appointed caretaker reacts to this worst nightmare.

Celtic dealt injury blow over James Forrest

Celtic’s hopes of ending the season in the strongest way possible have been dealt an almighty blow.

The Bhoys went crashing out of the cup last weekend and they will now finish a season without a trophy for the first time in a decade.

What didn’t help last weekend was that James Forrest was ruled out of the clash.

Speaking in the build-up to the game John Kennedy revealed that they’d leave it late in terms of his fitness. However, he failed a late test and missed the defeat to Rangers.

Unfortunately, they will be without Forrest again on Wednesday when the Hoops face Aberdeen.

It would appear that the winger is still yet to recover from an injury problem but if there is one consolation, he should be back at the weekend.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday afternoon, the interim manager commented: “Out with that, James Forrest will still be missing for this midweek, but will hopefully be fine afterwards.”

Celtic may not have anything to play for but after the dismal way in which they lost to their biggest rivals a few days ago, being without Forrest again is a bitter pill to swallow.

They can only lust after his goal-scoring antics and ability to create. Odsonne Edouard and Mo Elyounoussi missed golden chances to score last Sunday, opportunities which Forrest surely would have lapped up.

He scored 16 times last season, providing 22 assists for his teammates in the process. With Forrest suffering from an injury since September, missing a player with that kind of record has clearly had a big say in the title race.

Forrest has already made a pretty big impact since coming back into the fray, scoring against Falkirk in the cup and against Livingston.

To have him absent from the squad again just about sums up their torrid campaign. Kennedy and the supporters must be cursing their luck.

He is such an imperative part of what Celtic have become in the last decade; they need him fit and firing as soon as possible.

Journalist drops enticing Tottenham managerial claim

According to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown, writing on Twitter, Tottenham Hotspur have ‘already begun’ approaching managerial alternatives to Julian Nagelsmann and Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers.

Indeed, Nagelsmann was recently announced as the new Bayern Munich boss in a big blow to Spurs whilst Sky Sports report that Rodgers is more than likely to stay at Leicester.

Journalist says Spurs have ‘already begun’ approaches

The Star journalist says that chairman Daniel Levy has already begun scouring managerial alternatives and always considered Nagelsmann a tough ask.

These names include Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag and Ralph Rangnick, with the former having a glowing reputation when it comes to developing young stars.

Tottenham will need to quickly move in their hunt for a new boss as the club seek to put a forgettable 2020/2021 season behind them.

Spurs are facing a fight to qualify for Europe this season and are out of all cup competitions having recently lost the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City at Wembley.

Transfer Tavern take

Interim boss Ryan Mason, in the meantime, is set to stay in charge until the end of the season but Spurs apparently want a more experienced manager in place for next term.

The priority is allegedly an attack-minded coach who can re-install an exciting brand of football, and the Lilywhites should go no further than Ten Hag.

He has been compared to Pep Guardiola in the past for his Johan Cruyff-ian philosophy (AS) and so could be the perfect alternative to both Nagelsmann and Rodgers.

West Ham passed on deal for Ivan Toney

West Ham United co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold must rue their decision to pass on signing Brentford striker Ivan Toney from Peterborough United.

What’s the word?

While speaking exclusively with Football FanCast, Peterborough’s Director of Football Barry Fry has claimed that he told Gold and Sullivan to purchase Toney in 2020 before selling the striker to Brentford.

The 25-year-old joined the Bees last August in a £5m deal that could reach £10m with add-ons, and has proven to be a huge hit in the Championship.

Toney’s efforts at the Brentford Community Stadium, where he has provided 43% of his side’s 65 league goals, are thought to have piqued West Ham’s interest, with Eurosport claiming that he has emerged as an interesting option to replace Sebastien Haller.

But Fry claims the Irons had the chance to jump the queue and land Toney last year, having spoken in detail with the London Stadium hierarchy.

“I spoke to David Sullivan and David Gold last year at great length and I said he’s the best centre-forward we’ve had,” Fry told FFC.

“He’s not only a goalscorer, he scored 49 goals for us in 92 games in two seasons. But it wasn’t only his goalscoring efforts, he also made a lot of goals and he also was our best defender.

“He headed the ball out more than anybody else, from free-kicks and corners from the opposition. He was absolutely magnificent, and I recommended him highly.”

A huge blunder from GSB

Gold and Sullivan must surely now rue their decision to go against Fry’s advice and choose not to sign Toney last summer, with Moyes failing to get the best out of Haller before the striker joined AFC Ajax, with West Ham opting against hiring a replacement in January.

Toney leads the Championship Golden Boot race coming out of the international break with 28 goals to his name in 36 appearances, six more than any other player, while penning nine assists.

His efforts under Thomas Frank have seen the 25-year-old’s market value skyrocket in the seven-months since Toney’s arrival, with football.london suggesting the Northampton-born star is now valued by Brentford at around £30m.

That price is dependent on the Bees failing to secure promotion to the Premier League, with Frank’s side currently in the play-off pack, as it would take an ‘obscene’ offer to tempt the Greater London outfit to cash-in with top-flight football to come.

Toney also has suitors in Arsenal and Leeds United, per TEAMtalk, while Peterborough chief Fry added that “top” Premier League sides are watching the £21,000-per-week sensation and that every club he spoke with last year are “regretting not signing him”.

West Ham facing a £25m hike on the initial fee Brentford paid the Posh last year will come as an added blow for Gold and Sullivan, too, and they could be left kicking themselves for years if the forward were to now join a Premier League rival in the summer.

AND in other news, a £70k-p/w dud with “wonderful feet” intends to quit West Ham this summer…

Celtic: Howe ‘a serious candidate’

Eddie Howe is ‘a serious candidate’ to become Celtic’s next permanent manager, according to the reliable Alan Nixon.

Howe has been out of work since leaving Bournemouth back in August and has been linked with the Hoops job on numerous occasions since the turn of the year.

Nixon, who writes for The Sun, was simply asked on Twitter by a Hoops fan on Tuesday evening ‘Howe to Celtic?’, to which he replied: ’He’s a candidate. A serious candidate.’

The Hoops are yet to confirm any off-field appointments following Neil Lennon’s resignation in February, with a director of football set to be brought in prior to a new first-team manager.

Transfer Tavern take

To us, Howe is the sort of manager Celtic should be after. At just 43 years of age, the Englishman could inject a fresh youthful approach to the Hoops and already has an impressive CV.

He took Bournemouth from League Two to the Premier League in the space of six seasons during his second stint in charge of the Cherries.

Celtic appear in desperate need of a rebuild this summer, and with Howe having previous experience of that on the south coast, he could be the man to bring an exciting attacking style of football back to Celtic Park.
