Aston Villa must fend off Milan competition for Mohamed Simakan

According to Le10Sport, Milan have made an offer for reported Aston Villa transfer target Mohamed Simakan.

What’s the story?

Reports over the summer suggested that Dean Smith’s side were very much interested in landing the Strasbourg centre-half, with his agent revealing last month that he expects the Premier League side, as well as other clubs, to make a move for him in January.

He said: “There were many teams on Simakan – Lyon, Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund. I think these clubs, including AC Milan, will try to push again (in January). The boy has picked up where he left off, showing his qualities, and it is possible his admirers will also increase.”

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

And now, French publication Le10Sport have claimed that Serie A giants Milan have made the first post-transfer window move to sign the 6 foot 2 defender, and that whilst they’ve seen an initial bid rejected, are prepared to make a fresh approach.

Better than Konsa

At just 20, Simakan is a couple of years younger than Villa centre-back Ezri Konsa, who’s been Smith’s preferred partner alongside Tyrone Mings.

And when you look at both of their performances for their respective teams this season, Simakan looks like the kind of prospect who the Villa boss should play next to Mings.

As per Sofascore, Simakan has won an impressive 2.2 tackles and 1.9 interceptions per game in Ligue 1, whilst he wins 6.1 duels per match too, at an astounding success rate of 61%. Konsa, on the other hand, has averaged three times as less tackles, and less than half the amount of interceptions, whilst he only wins only marginally more duels at 6.7.

His agent added: “Mohamed is a class of 2000 who can play as a central defender or as a right-back. He has great strength, technically good, but his main gift is power and explosiveness.”

With Milan already making it clear that they mean business, it’s up to Johan Lange to make sure Villa aren’t left behind in the race to sign him.

West Brom should look to offload Hal Robson-Kanu next month

West Brom have a lot of decisions to make ahead of the January transfer window otherwise they truly risk their place in the Premier League.

Finances are tight, so incomings may be scarce but perhaps funds can be raised through sales of many of Slaven Bilic’s fringe players. You’d imagine Charlie Austin and Kamil Grosicki will be the first two out the door.

But perhaps there is some value left in Hal Robson-Kanu, who is just not favoured in the Premier League by the Croatian. The two-time Championship promotion winner would surely attract some interest given his experience.

The versatile 31-year-old forward hasn’t started a single game in the top-flight and despite being fit was snubbed entirely from the matchday squad as the Baggies were thrashed 5-1 by Crystal Palace.

Indeed, Robson-Kanu has featured in the Carabao Cup as captain, scoring three goals in two matches, but both outings were against lower-league opposition, which only goes to show that he may well be out of his depth in the Premier League at this point.

According to Spotrac, the Welshman is among the highest-earners at the Hawthorns, bringing home a tidy £30k-per-week, which is more than Grady Diangana (£20k-per-week), Kyle Bartley (£13.5k-per-week) and Romaine Sawyers (£12.5k-per-week).

All of those three have started and featured more than Robson-Kanu.

Therefore, it only seems like a wise decision to look to offload him in January as he’s merely bleeding Guochuan Lai’s pockets dry by not playing, and it’s not as if the Chinese businessman will be prepared to invest much more in terms of a transfer kitty.

WBA legend Kevin Phillips hailed the veteran’s impact during their promotion run-in, he told the Express & Star: “Hal Robson-Kanu has really performed. He has always been an exciting player, I’ve always liked his work ethic and his hold-up play. But this season he has added the goals that perhaps in previous seasons he hasn’t.”

That’s merely a thing of the past now though as Albion face a desperate battle to survive in the top-flight. Robson-Kanu could well take a bit off the wage bill and every little bit will help.

AND in other news, West Brom must take a risk on prolific EFL marksman who scores once every 75 minutes…

Meslier is Leeds’ bargain of the summer

Leeds United’s good start to the Premier League season has had many pundits raving about the Whites’ attacking intent, but it’s easy to forget that one man who deserves just as much credit as any forward player this season is United’s goalkeeper.

Indeed, Illan Meslier may have only kept one clean sheet so far this season, but he has been instrumental in Leeds’ success so far, earning all sorts of plaudits along the way.

Undoubtedly, his best performance of the season came against Sheffield United where he made two saves from John Lundstram and George Baldock at point-blank range to deny the Blades and eventually earn his team three points.

It’s hard to imagine where Leeds would be without their goalkeeper, and the fact that he cost just £5m this summer, makes his performances that much sweeter.

Marcelo Bielsa’s comments on him last season show just how good he is while also highlighting how much of a bargain he was.

“He is a goalkeeper without weak points and he has been with us from the beginning of the season,” Bielsa said.

Nobody expected a youngster from Ligue 2 to be Premier League ready this quickly, but Meslier is doing the business against the very best sides in the league.

Yes, he conceded eight in his first two games, but with three of those being penalties and others being down to individual errors, such as Liam Cooper’s poor marking of Aleksandar Mitrovic against Fulham, those numbers look far more forgivable.

At just £5m he has a better save percentage than £65m man Alisson, and if you discount the three penalties that have been scored against him, his save percentage goes up to 80%, which is good enough for third-best in the league.

In an age where relegated goalkeepers can cost £18.5m signing Meslier for £5m is one of the biggest bargains we’ve seen this summer, and Leeds can be proud of the fact that they’ve uncovered such a gem from absolutely nowhere.

Glasgow Rangers: Gerrard must take shackles off Glen Kamara

Whilst the international break is not always ideal for club managers, such as Glasgow Rangers’ Steven Gerrard, it gives them the opportunity to see how their players adapt to a different situation.

There are plenty of Gers players who are currently away with their countries, such as Glen Kamara, who represents Finland. The 24-year-old has 21 caps, the latest of which came against the Republic of Ireland. His performance in that game could be a big one not only for Finland, but also at Ibrox.

For Gerrard, Kamara generally sits in a defensive midfield role, shielding the back four, but against the Irish he was far more of a threat going in the other direction. For example, he completed all three of the dribbles he attempted, had a passing accuracy of 93%, and also contributed with two key passes – he has averaged 0.6 dribbles and 1.2 key passes in the Premiership so far this term.

The likes of Brian Laudrup have demanded more creativity in the Gers midfield, and Kamara could be the man to solve that Gerrard problem. Whilst he may not be the most prolific – he has just one strike in those 21 caps – he still has the ability to provide going forward rather than just sitting in a defensive role. It is time Gerrard took the shackles off the £1.08m-valued man (as per Transfermarkt).

Newcastle’s Ryan Fraser proves his importance to Steve Bruce with Scotland display

After arriving as a free agent following his spell at Bournemouth coming to an end, Ryan Fraser delivered the kind of performance on Sunday that would have left Newcastle boss Steve Bruce grinning from ear to ear.

The 26-year-old has only played a bit-part role for the Magpies since joining, completing the 90 minutes just once, and playing only twice in the Premier League.

But having been given the nod to start from the off in Scotland’s Nations League clash against Slovakia at the weekend, Fraser proved why he could be one of the bargains of the summer in the top-flight.

Despite not getting to the score-sheet, or even being credited with an assist, the former Cherries flier was voted as Scotland’s Man of the Match, and when you look at some of the underlying numbers behind his performance, it’s easy to see why.

As per Sofascore, he had a 100% dribble success rate, provided two key passes and sent in a whopping ten crosses, with a lovely piece of play down the left-hand side eventually seeing Oli McBurnie’s header cannon off the crossbar.

That snippet of action alone would have had one man on Tyneside salivating at the prospect of being his teammate over the course of this season: Andy Carroll.

The Englishman – like Fraser – has been in and out of the starting line-up, but there’s no doubting that if he’s fully fit and firing – and it is a massive ‘if’ – then he can be a real attacking weapon for Bruce.

Carroll thrives on service into the box, and instead of feeding off scraps, having an old-school winger like Fraser just simply get to the by-line before standing up a cross into the penalty area could see him feast on Premier League defences.

It’s no surprise that left-sided players like Aaron Cresswell, Stewart Downing and Jose Enrique all feature in the top ten when it comes to goal participations with Carroll.

Described as someone who gives Scotland that “little bit of spark” by manager Steve Clarke, Fraser appears to have all the makings of being Carroll’s dream teammate.

And in other news, Newcastle must surely regret selling this ace for just £650k.

West Ham bid for Matty Cash spells trouble for Ryan Fredericks

West Ham appear to be edging closer to their first signing of the summer as their latest bid is being mulled over.

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Mirror (page 54, 12th August), Championship outfit Nottingham Forest may accept the Hammers’ £10m bid for their right-back Matty Cash.

It’s claimed that they want an extra £5m for his services after knocking back a similar offer from Premier League rivals Sheffield United.

But David Moyes’ side aren’t prepared to budge, meaning Forest may have to sell the 23-year-old for a lower fee than expected if they want to cash in on their first-choice defender.

Bye-bye Fredericks

Whether the Irons get their man for £10m or are forced to pay that extra amount remains to be seen, but it does spell bad news for Ryan Fredericks.

The 27-year-old has been wholly underwhelming from an attacking standpoint this season, averaging a mere 0.8 key passes and 0.6 crosses per game, via WhoScored.

In fact, West Ham rank third-worst for attacking the right flank in the Premier League this season with just 35% of their advances coming from Fredericks’ side.

This is where Cash can elevate Moyes’ side onto a new level next term. He’s provided three goals and five assists whilst averaging 1.1 key passes, 1 shot and 0.7 crosses per appearance in the Championship.

The Times’ chief football writer Henry Winter claimed back in November that the Forest man “looks Premier League class” whilst Quest TV pundit Sam Parkin has described his season as “outstanding”.

If the Irons want to progress further under Moyes next season, then a swoop for the attack-minded Cash makes the world of sense – they just need to stump up the cash to land their man.

Manchester United: Fans tear into Angel Gomes over latest transfer report

Manchester United are relaxed about Angel Gomes’ future at Old Trafford and are still holding talks with his agent, as per ESPN via @utdreport.

Gomes has caught the eye of a number of European giants, including Premier League rivals Chelsea as well as Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund, but United are reportedly unfazed by the transfer speculation despite the fact his current contract is set to expire at the end of next month. He will be able to leave as a free agent when the deal runs out.

Although Barca were genuinely interested in the England under-20 international, the La Liga leaders did not intend to give him first team football, which has been something of a disappointment to the teenager.

Sources told ESPN that the Blaugrana were actually looking to add the United academy graduate to Barcelona’s B team, rather than the senior side alongside superstars like Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann. The transfer saga has dragged on all year and there could well be plenty more twists to come in the weeks ahead.

Understandably, many Red Devils fans tore into the “selfish” youngster on social media once the news emerged, with one fan tweeting he is “overrated” and another adding that “he’s a joke.”

Take a look at some of the United fans’ reactions below…

Tottenham Hotspur: Jamie Carragher says Harry Kane ‘has reached the crossroads of his career’ at club

Former Liverpool central defender turned Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher claims that Harry Kane ‘has reached the crossroads of his career’ at Tottenham Hotspur.

‘Carra’ was speaking in his column for the Telegraph as he debated if Kane should leave the north London club and whether Spurs should sell him given certain factors.

The comments were relayed by Sky Sports and this is what Carragher had to say on the 26-year old:

“Harry Kane has reached the crossroads of his career at the worst time possible. In other circumstances, the Tottenham striker’s comments suggesting he would consider a move in the near future would be reasonable.

“These are far from normal times, with clubs losing money and needing to cut costs rather than plan major investments in the wake of the coronavirus crisis.

“That means if players in the highest price bracket want out of their clubs, there is less chance they will get their wish.

“Kane is in that category. A limited number of clubs can afford him, and I am not sure how many have the appetite to engage in a fractious negotiation with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy in the current climate.

“Kane turns 27 in July. We have no idea when the next transfer window will open or next season start. If Kane does not leave soon, the situation gets trickier for him.

“When players hit 28, psychologically it makes a big difference to clubs. They see him as nearer 30, recognise there is no resale value and baulk at high valuations.”

Reports from the likes of the Telegraph have stated that Kane is indeed considering his future with Spurs, but Carragher believes that because of circumstances at the moment, it may not be the best time for the English international captain to ponder.

The star is rated at £135 million according to Transfermarkt and will likely not come cheap given his status in North London, as well as being the England captain and the top-scorer at the 2018 World Cup to boot.

Furthermore, the 26-year old is arguably in the prime of his career given his age and his stats over the years for the Lilywhites are very impressive. As per Transfermarkt, Kane has scored 181 goals and provided 30 assists in 278 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham.

The central forward may feel that he has done all he can at the club and as Carragher believes, Kane ‘has reached the crossroads of his career’, meaning that he may be dwelling on a move.

Arsenal fans react to Unai Emery hinting Granit Xhaka could make Emirates return

Well that was rather quick. Mere weeks after Granit Xhaka seemingly ended his Arsenal career by ripping off his shirt and antagonising the Emirates faithful, the midfielder could be set to make a dramatic return to the first-team fold.

Reports in recent weeks have gone into overdrive about the Switzerland international potentially leaving the club in the near future, with a move back to his former side Borussia Monchengladbach even being mooted.

But speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Gunners’ huge Premier League clash against Southampton on Saturday afternoon, Unai Emery revealed that he is considering handing Xhaka a return to action.

He said: “We will decide on Friday. He is coming back better in his mind, his mindset is better to help us and to be closer to playing when we need him.”

After hearing the Spaniard’s comments on their former club captain, Arsenal fans flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation.

Many supporters of the north London side perhaps rather surprisingly urged for Emery to bring the 6 foot 1 man straight back into the starting line-up, with one fan even insisting that the side plays better when he is in the team.
