Misfiring batting leaves Mumbai in a hole

Mumbai’s batting failed once more to hand Gujarat the advantage in Valsad

Coming into their final league match, Mumbai were in a tight situation – needing a win if they wanted their fate to remain in their own hands – thanks in large part to their inconsistent batting. Their batsmen failed again, and handed Gujarat the advantage on the opening day at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Valsad. With fog enveloping the stadium, the toss was delayed by 40 minutes. This might have left a bit of dew on the surface, but Mumbai still preferred to bat, with three spinners in their XI and cracks visible on the pitch. The strategy required Mumbai’s batsmen to respect the bowling, especially when their progress to the knockouts, unless they won, would depend on what other teams did.But barring opener Kaustubh Pawar, who held one end together for most of the innings, no other Mumbai batsman seemed to put a price tag on his wicket. Mumbai folded for 155, before Gujarat batted more sensibly to reach 90 for 2 at stumps. If Samit Gohel and captain Parthiv Patel bat through the first session on the second day, they might well put Mumbai on the brink of the exit.Stand-in captain Wasim Jaffer quickly got off the blocks, striking three elegant boundaries before the umpires stopped play after seven overs due to fading light. In the fourth over after resumption, Jaffer glanced Ishwar Chaudhary and Parthiv dived to his left to take an excellent catch. Five balls later, D Subramanian shouldered arms to one from Jasprit Bumrah that pitched outside off and jagged back sharply to remove the bail.Throughout his morning spell, Bumrah troubled Pawar with his incoming deliveries. However, the opener hung on and along with Hiken Shah saw off the new ball. Just when Shah was looking good, he was caught by Manprit Juneja at short point off part-time seamer Bhargav Merai to leave Mumbai 39 for 3.After taking successive boundaries off the back foot off left-arm spinner Rakesh Dhurv in the second over after lunch, Aditya Tare edged a drive off Chaudhary to wicketkeeper Parthiv, to fall for a 17-ball 13.Considering Suryakumar Yadav’s tendency to fiddle outside off early in his innings, Parthiv brought Bumrah back on and Yadav fell into the trap, offering Parthiv a regulation catch. Pravin Tambe’s wicket soon after left Mumbai in danger of being bowled out short of 100.Then came the most convincing knock of the innings. All-rounder Iqbal Abdulla, recalled by Mumbai, joined Pawar and began timing the ball sweetly from the outset, making it appear as if he and Pawar were playing on two different pitches. The highlight of Abdulla’s cameo was an over in which he went after Bumrah, finding the boundary four times with two square cuts either side of successive pull shots.Abdulla then went for a single that was never there off left-arm spinner Akshar Patel and found himself well short of the crease. Pawar was the ninth man dismissed, thanks to an excellent one-handed catch by Gohel in the slips, before Javed Khan struck sixes to take Mumbai past 150.That was well short of the desired total. Mumbai will hope they will still have a total to defend if their spinners are to come into the game in the fourth innings. While Pawar conceded after stumps that “lack of partnerships” hurt them, Gujarat coach Vijay Patel said Mumbai’s batsmen had lacked application. “They appeared to be in the Twenty20 mode, so it ended up helping us,” Patel said. “Such a wicket, especially with the helpful conditions for seamers up front, required batsmen patience from batsmen. While our batsmen did it in the last session, Mumbai’s players just didn’t apply themselves.”

India brace for another pace test

Preview of the second ODI between India and Australia in Jaipur

Big PictureOn a slow pitch in Pune, Australia’s fast bowlers made the Indian batsmen hop and jump, asking old questions about their ability to handle high-quality pace bowling. India are going to be put through the same test again, but in conditions that will add another level of difficulty. The series moves to Jaipur, where the pitch – on the evidence of how it played during the IPL and the Champions League this year – will be spicier and in a way, rather Australian. The quartet of Mitchell Johnson, Clint McKay, Shane Watson and James Faulkner didn’t just deliver a win in the first ODI, they also put seeds of doubt in the minds of the Indian batsmen, forcing them on the back foot with predominantly short of length bowling, but cleverly mixed it up with accurate bouncers and teasing fuller ones.Virat Kohli acknowledged that too. “Very few batsmen get out to short deliveries,” he said. “It’s not a wicket-taking delivery but a tactic used by teams. But at international level, one should be ready to play any delivery that is thrown at him.” It was a ‘tactic’ that was executed to perfection by Australia’s bowlers, two of whom – Watson and Faulkner – have played more matches in Jaipur in the recent times than anyone in the India side.Australia’s seemingly inexperienced batting has taken advantage of India’s weak bowling too. In 70 overs, they have amassed 505 runs, that too without Watson making a contribution. Aaron Finch continued his dominating form this year and Glenn Maxwell provided those sudden spikes in scoring later in the innings. It’s still early in the series though. India’s top three have looked comfortable against the Australian seamers and it’s about how the rest pull their weight. That includes the bowlers, who, until now, have looked tired despite this being just the start of the new season.Form guide (Most recent games first)Australia WWLWW
India LWWWWIn the spotlightThe figures of 10-0-38-1 don’t tell the whole story of Mitchell Johnson’s spell on Sunday. Johnson was at his menacing best, hustling the batsmen with deliveries that were hurled around 150 kmph. His only wicket was that of Yuvraj Singh, who was given a good working over. Yuvraj stayed on the back foot for five deliveries expecting the short ball, but only got full ones. Then came the snorter, which Yuvraj could only edge behind. It was a masterful spell. However, the other Johnson, the one who sprays the ball around, is never too far and Australia will hope the bad one keeps his appearances to a minimum this series.Ishant Sharma’s career has been almost as long as Johnson’s – both have played the same number of Tests. But while Johnson’s form follows a cycle, Ishant’s stays in a perennial trough with a few stray spikes. The only remnants of the exciting young bowler who debuted in 2007 are his run-up and his hair. He has lacked pace and leaked runs in the two matches against Australia, but with limited fast-bowling stocks, India don’t have the luxury of letting him go. Kohli, Ishant’s Delhi team-mate, also defended him, saying, “I don’t think you can drop a player on the basis of two poor matches.” Ishant has just two more matches to do something of note before the squad for the last four ODIs is announced.Team newsMS Dhoni has a tendency to stick with the same XI and is not likely to disturb it just after one ODI, but there is a case to try out either Jaydev Unadkat or Mohammad Shami.India (probable) 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Suresh Raina, 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Vinay Kumar, 11 Ishant Sharma/Mohammed Shami/Jaydev UnadkatBrad Haddin left the field during the first match after being accidentally poked in the eye by James Faulkner, but he was back to keep wickets later in the day and should remain part of the XI. Australia are not likely to make any changes.Australia (probable) 1 Aaron Finch, 2 Phillip Hughes, 3 Shane Watson, 4 George Bailey, 5 Adam Voges, 6 Glenn Maxwell, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 James Faulkner, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Xavier DohertyStats and trivia In the last five years, the average of India’s middle-order batsmen (Nos 4-6) is below 35 against only three teams – Pakistan, South Africa and Australia. In the same period, India’s bowlers have struggled against Australia. Each Australian wicket costs them 46.55 runs, which is their worst against any teamQuotes”In T20s, everyone gets hit. Even Australian bowlers went for a 200-plus score. They didn’t change their bowlers in the next match. This is my opinion and rest is on the team management. I am not the captain or the coach to decide on selection matters.”
“I don’t think we used the short ball any more than any other game we play, but we were happy with the result. We do have plans against certain players though.”

Saudi second-tier side Al-Qadsiah have remarkably set their sights on the Belgian playmaker, according to . It is not clear if De Bruyne will be interested in making the move to Saudi Arabia any time soon, however. The 32-year-old's contract at City expires in 2025 and he remains an important figure in the team, but the ex-Chelsea player has managed just one Premier League appearance so far this season, having sustained a muscle injury in the first game of the season.

De Bruyne is at the top of Al-Qadsiah's list of international targets for the summer transfer window. They are not the only Saudi team linked with him, though, as it was reported in October that Al-Nassr hope to meet with his agent to discuss a possible transfer.

Azeem Rafiq set to give evidence before DCMS as pressure mounts on Yorkshire

Club comes in for criticism from government over handling of report into allegations of racism

George Dobell03-Nov-2021The full details of Azeem Rafiq’s allegations of racism at Yorkshire are set to come to light after he was called to give evidence to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) select committee.Roger Hutton, the chair of Yorkshire, Mark Arthur, the chief executive, and Martyn Moxon, the club’s director of cricket, have also been called to provide evidence. The hearing will be held on November 16.Yorkshire spent many months waiting for a team of lawyers to compile a report into Rafiq’s allegations of racism at the club. Once it was completed, however, Yorkshire decided the contents were too controversial to publish and, despite admitting Rafiq was “the victim of inappropriate behaviour” and detailing failures in following their own procedures, announced that no player, coach or official would face sanctions.Subsequently, however, the report was leaked to ESPNcricinfo and, once details were published, the public backlash persuaded various political figures to intervene. These details included incidents of a fellow player referring to Rafiq as a “P**i” on numerous occasions. The panel reviewing the information concluded that Rafiq should have appreciated this was no more than “banter” and didn’t believe his alleged upset was genuine. This led to UK health secretary Sajid Javid calling for “heads to roll” at Yorkshire, while culture secretary Nadine Dorries labelled Rafiq’s treatment “disgusting”. A spokesperson for Boris Johnson, the prime minister, said the language used against Rafiq was “racist” and “should never be used in any context whatsoever”.Related

  • Rafiq calls for removal of Yorkshire senior management

Perhaps most pertinently, the chair of the DCMS select committee, Julian Knight, called for the entire board of the club to resign. Knight has the power to call all involved to give evidence to the committee of MPs. The conclusions of his panel will prove hard to ignore.”Given the endemic racism at Yorkshire County Cricket Club,” Knight wrote on Twitter, “I struggle to think of any reason why that the board should remain in post. This is one of the most repellent and disturbing episodes in modern cricket history.”While Hutton, Arthur and Moxon may be in for an uncomfortable ride when the DCMS session begins, it is perhaps the testimony of Rafiq that promises to reveal the most. While he has been limited in what he can say as his employment tribunal and the Yorkshire investigation took place, Rafiq is likely to be protected by parliamentary privilege when talking to DCMS and is thought unlikely to spare any detail. As a result, some significant figures in the history of Yorkshire and England cricket are likely to be sitting extremely uneasily.Hutton’s testimony may also be revealing. He didn’t join Yorkshire until April 2020, long after the period to which these allegations relate, and retained a relatively good relationship with Rafiq. He had originally indicated a desire to see the full report published but, in the face of strong opposition from a couple of his key executives and some legal advice which suggested to do so would risk libel actions, was eventually persuaded to take a different approach. He is seen, by the ECB and to some extent Rafiq, as a reforming influence at the club and is still thought to want to see the contents of the report published.

His relationship with his senior executives has clearly deteriorated, however. Some of them feel the club should have fought the allegations more aggressively and resent Hutton’s attempts at contrition. As a result of the disagreement within the senior management, the club has neither effectively refuted the allegations nor accepted fault. Hutton was understood to be considering his position. Were he to step down, it seems a familiar face could replace him. Colin Graves, the former ECB chair, is understood to have let it be known that he would be prepared to return to the club. Graves was also chair of Yorkshire for some of the period in which Rafiq was at the club. There would be some irony in Hutton’s departure, as it would leave in place two of the officials who came in for some of the fiercest criticism in the report. The pair were found to be “dismissive of the concerns of race discrimination” raised by Rafiq. They were also accused in the report of demonstrating “insufficient concern” that one of the club’s “players may have felt racially discriminated against”. This convinced the panel that they were “dismissive of Azeem’s concerns”.Both remain in high-profile positions at the club and are understood to have been among the small group who reviewed the final report and decided not to share its contents.Elsewhere in the report, a former Yorkshire and England player – who no longer represents the club – is found to have engaged in behaviour which “amounted to bullying”. He is cleared of serious misconduct, however, as the panel concluded his motivations were not racist. The panel was chaired by Samir Pathak, surgeon and trustee of the MCC Foundation, and included Mesba Ahmed, vice-chairman of the National Asian Cricket Council, Rehana Azib, an employment barrister, Helen Hyde, the former Waitrose personnel director and Stephen Willis, CFO of Durham University and the senior independent director of Yorkshire County Cricket Club.Meanwhile Roger Pugh, the former chair of the Yorkshire South Premier League, has been proposed as Head of the Premier Section of the league. Pugh was obliged to stand down in September 2020 when he reacted to news of Rafiq’s struggles, including his suicidal thoughts and the loss of a child, by saying he was “discourteous, disrespectful and very difficult”. He then invoked a biblical phrase to suggest a karmic element to Rafiq’s plight, writing “as ye sow so shall ye reap”.Azeem Rafiq has spoken out about racism at Yorkshire•Getty Images

Pugh was proposed for the role by Barnsley Woolley Miners CC, whose own chair, Phillip Chapman, was criticised for saying a rival club’s overseas player reminded him of a street-seller he had encountered while on holiday. The news will do nothing to assuage the growing doubts at the ECB about the culture of cricket in the region. Having only had the Yorkshire report for a few days – the club refused to hand it over until the ECB threated to prosecute them for bringing the game into disrepute – they are still getting to grips with the key facts. The board is likely to speak to dozens of witnesses before coming to any conclusions so any report could be some months away.”Last week we received Yorkshire’s report into the racism and bullying allegations Azeem Rafiq made against the club,” the ECB said in a statement on Tuesday evening. “We are conscious about the length of time that Azeem has waited for resolution and the toll that must be taking on his wellbeing and that of his family. We are sorry that, as a sport, this has not yet been resolved.”We will conduct a full regulatory process that is fair to all parties, but also ensure this happens as quickly as possible. To achieve this, we have secured the services of a QC, along with other external investigatory support to upweight resource around our process. The ECB board has also reaffirmed its commitment to further additional resource, should the investigation require it.”ESPNcricinfo understands there is increasing concern within the ECB at Yorkshire being allowed to host or bid for international fixtures while issues around the subject remain unresolved. The club are currently scheduled to host a Test against New Zealand in 2022 and an Ashes Test in 2023. With political opinion building and the ECB anxious to show they are tough on the issue of racism, it is becoming ever more possible the club could be stripped of such games.

Smith content with high expectations

Nine years as an international cricket captain has given Graeme Smith more than just records. It has handed him a wide-angle lens from which to view the game, something that comes in handy when the here and now is seen as the most important thing.Smith remembers the struggles of the early 2000s when South Africa lost series across the sub-continent and the indifference that followed. He walked every step of the slow, steady rise to the top which may have appeared stagnating in second place but to Smith was a crucial process to building a strong side. He was part of the unit that eventually triumphed, a testament to years of grind. With that in mind, the team’s draw in Brisbane last week does not reflect a lack of ruthlessness or a fear of progression. For Smith, it illustrates exactly how far the team has come. “For us, the great thing is that there is a respect about our performance. If we had travelled a few years ago and drawn a Test match anywhere else in the world people would have been raving about it,” Smith said. “The disappointment in the draw is good for us. It shows that people expect us to play well and that’s exciting for us.”Being tagged as favourites is not new for South Africa but being tagged as favourites who may not fall at the final hurdle is. Every one-day competition they enter, South Africa are talked up with an undertone of being laughed at and when they crash out in any fashion, the knowing nods indicate that they were never expected to win.In Test cricket, it’s different. Because South Africa have done so well, especially on the road, when they don’t put on an emphatic performance, it is a surprise. Not to Smith. He refused to read too much into the rut the first Test got stuck in and did not think he should have done any more to dislodge it. “Both teams drew the last game, not just us,” he said defiantly, when asked if he will do more to move the game forward in Adelaide.Rather than employ more aggressive tactics, a sure-fire way to push a match along, South Africa will field a slightly different bowling attack, which Smith thinks will do the same job. After a brief dalliance with an all-pace line-up, which proved to be a mistake, the frontline spinner Imran Tahir is back in the starting XI and Smith expects him to make an impact, given the conditions.”Hopefully there is a lot of rough, not for me but for the Aussie left-handers,” he said. “Imran has used rough well in the time that he has played for us. He created a lot of stress for Andrew Strauss and the left-handers in England and his wrong’un is also a good option.”Smith can well recall the days of South Africa not having an attacking slower bowler and being accused of not being able to produce spinners. That may be why he has been one of Tahir’s strongest supporters. Previously, he went as far as to say that having a wicket-taking spinner has given him most complete attack he has ever had to work with. He does not see Tahir has biding time, waiting for a career-defining explosion, and credits him with already making a difference.”Naturally, he’ll be anxious to do well, always,” Smith said of Tahir. “That is his personality. But he has contributed in key ways for us over the last few Test matches and his role is important. He understands that not every surface that we have played on has offered him the world but he been able to contribute.”For that contribution, bringing in a more defensive bowler, such as left-armer Robin Peterson, did not even come into the team’s thinking. “Imran is the frontline spinner and we backed him,” Smith said. The other weapon Smith has not always been used to having is the ultra-reliability of Vernon Philander, which has wavered on this tour. Rather than be concerned, Smith said he has no doubts that Philander will lift in Adelaide. “We didn’t have any green tracks in England and he did pretty well. I’ve liked the way he looked this week, really good zip in the nets. The ball has been swinging and moving and I expect good things from him,” he said. “He has got the character to bounce back. I don’t think he bowled really badly in Brisbane.”South Africa’s bowling attack hold one of the keys to them retaining the No.1 ranking for a sustained period. But in Brisbane they looked flat. Although they only managed five wickets, compared to Australia’s 14, Smith said both sides had bowlers who “lacked a bit.”One thing South Africa cannot afford is deficiencies in any department. Their defence of the title could not have begun any tougher. To have to avoid defeat against Australia in Australia is something few teams can boast of. That’s another thing Smith knows first-hand, having been part of series losses and a win Down Under. If the team can draw from and repeat the latter, it will give Smith yet another thing to put into perspective. “This is a big challenge for us,” he said. “If we can come through Australia having been successful we will give ourselves an opportunity to create something special.”

Katich earns Hampshire victory

ScorecardSimon Katich guided Hampshire to a comfortable four-wicket CB40 win over Durham with a perfectly judged half-century. Australian veteran Katich struck three sixes and a four in his 59 not out as Hampshire got home with 10 balls to spare.Durham, put in on a slow wicket, mustered 200 for 7 from their 40 overs. Gordon Muchall underpinned Durham’s total with a brave and defiant 96 not out, coming in at 41 for 3 with his side finding it hard to get the better of a wet outfield.Muchall struck five fours and two sixes off 99 balls, sharing in an important stand of 83 for the fifth wicket with Dale Benkenstein, who made 31. Paul Collingwood contributed 28 and it might have been more had he not been beaten by a throw from Jimmy Adams at extra cover when the Durham total was 59.Kabir Ali was the most successful of the Hampshire bowlers, taking 3 for 39, removing opener Phil Mustard in his first spell and then returning to get rid of former Hampshire batsman Johann Myburgh and Gareth Breese. When Hampshire responded they were given a solid base by Adams and fellow opener James Vince who put on 73 for the first wicket.Legspinner Scott Borthwick ended the stand when he removed Adams for 33 and later caused concern in the Hampshire camp by coming back to dismiss Sean Ervine and Liam Dawson. But all the while former Durham batsman Katich was in command, so were Hampshire.Katich twice hit Borthwick for six and did the same to Ben Stokes before finding the perfect ally in Dimitri Mascarenhas. With 30 required off 29 balls at the fall of Dawson’s wicket at the start of the 36th over, Katich and Mascarenhas went on the offensive.Mascarenhas lifted Borthwick for another six to take Hampshire in sight of victory before Borthwick got some measure of revenge by him lbw for 22.The sixth wicket pair had put on 28 in 15 balls and with Hampshire now needing two runs, the rest was a formality. Katich faced 62 balls and, for all his late punishment, Borthwick was the pick of the Durham bowlers in terms of wickets, finishing with 4 for 51 from his eight-over stint.

Steyn hunts with the pack

Dale Steyn is prepared to share the bowling plaudits around as South Africa aim for a clean sweep in the ODI series against New Zealand

Firdose Moonda01-Mar-2012There was a time in South African cricket where the bowling spotlight was occupied entirely by Dale Steyn. It probably started when New Zealand toured South Africa in the summer of 2007 and Steyn made his big splash, first by remodelling Craig Cumming’s face – thanks to a fractured cheekbone – and then by taking 20 wickets in two Tests. From that season, Steyn was among the most talked-about bowlers in world cricket. He went on to take 10-wicket hauls in Melbourne in 2008 and Nagpur in 2010, and engaged in an enthralling battle with Sachin Tendulkar at Newlands the next January. Morne Morkel contributed to some of the glory and the two formed what became known as the most-fearsome new-ball pair in the world but it was obvious Steyn was the ringmaster and Morkel his trusty aide. Now Steyn has to share the sunshine with a clutch of his countrymen. Vernon Philander is his latest opening partner and has already hogged headlines in the home series; Morkel is coming into his own; Lonwabo Tsotsobe’s reliability is being recognised; and Marchant de Lange is the man batsmen may be hiding their faces from. Steyn is still the No. 1 Test bowler but he is 16th in the ODI rankings, behind Tsotsobe and Morkel, and is happy to share the success with them.”If Morne is picking up five wickets and Lopsy is picking up wickets, I’m not going to moan,” Steyn said. “I’m happy. I know if I just keep doing this somewhere along the line I will get a performance that comes my way.”Steyn joined up with the squad for the ODI leg of the tour and has played the first two matches of the series. His return in both was identical – 1 for 37 – and he has looked every bit as dangerous as always, although he said he is still finding his rhythm. He called his first ball of the tour, a late away-swinger at top speed a “jetlag delivery” but said he has been putting in some of his most focused preparation as he continues to spearhead the attack.”AB wants to me to strike all the time and that’s what’s I am doing. I am trying,” Steyn said. “I haven’t found the edge. I’ve gone past the bat countless number of times in the last two games. I’ve gone back and watched my performances and said where can I make it better? But when you are getting 1 for 37 in a one-day game, there’s not much to complain about. That doesn’t happen often for strike bowlers, they should be going at six [runs per over], attacking more and so on but I am quite happy with what’s happening.”Steyn is known to take a bit of time to find his best form but the scheduling of international cricket has meant that he cannot play every match. He was rested for the last two of the five ODIs against Sri Lanka, once the series had been won, and the three T20Is against New Zealand.South Africa’s management seem to be planning it so he will peak in the Tests but Steyn said is being careful not to think that far ahead. “My mind is firmly on the last one-day game,” he said. “It’s fair to say that as South Africans, in the past we’ve been known to wrap up series and then take our foot off the pedal for the last two games and that’s speaking quite critically of our team. We want to win three-nil.”The series has already been sealed in South Africa’s favour so the dead rubber match could hardly be described as crucial but Steyn said it will play a vital part in the context of the tour as a whole. “We’re looking at the future and it comes down to crunch games. This could be the type of game that could be a crunch game for us. Rather than letting the momentum slip away into the Test series, we want to make a proper dent.”With New Zealand already disappointed, even demoralised, South Africa have already made significant inroads into their hosts’ mindsets. The rest of the work remains to be done on the pitch. New Zealand have begun preparing more seamer friendly wickets for their four-pronged pace attack and Steyn said if that trend continues, the South Africans will be equally well accommodated. “The way the wickets have played here so far, there’s been a bit of pace and bounce in them and if the Test wickets are the same we could cause quite a stir,” Steyn said, before concluding with a little cheek. “Like we’ve done so far.”Edited by Alan Gardner
