Raw pace and nerveless accuracy: How Umran Malik regained Sunrisers' middle-overs control

While Rashid Khan was taken apart, Malik put in a spell of 3-0-10-1 with an average speed of close to 150kph

Holder on Malik: Extra pace always adds a boost to any bowling attack. It’s good to see his control as well too

T20 matches, especially in an elite league like the IPL, are games within games. Sunrisers Hyderabad are playing against Royal Challengers Bangalore, but there’s also Rashid Khan waiting to be unleashed on Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers. Royal Challengers’ two most destructive batters have less than impressive records against Rashid in the IPL: de Villiers has scored 38 runs off 40 balls and has been dismissed three times coming into this game. Maxwell hasn’t been dismissed in 26 balls, but he has scored only 19. The IPL numbers are the most relevant because that’s the only place Rashid has been on equal footing, instead of in vastly mismatched teams. If you’re Kane Williamson on the field, you look at those numbers and go, ‘This is where I deploy Rashid, when the first of those two come in.’If you’re in the Royal Challengers dugout, you think, ‘The pitch is still holding and gripping a bit, this is where I turn my batting order around and draw a few overs from Rashid before my trump cards walk in and blast the others’.Royal Challengers’ Plan A would have been Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal setting up a firm platform. When that failed, they sent in Daniel Christian with instructions to hit out. When that didn’t happen, KS Bharat walked out at No. 4. Plan B also failed. Royal Challengers had the right plans, but if you could always execute your plans in cricket, there would be no need for an opposition. Enter Maxwell after 6.5 overs, three wickets down and without Rashid having to bowl. Enter Rashid, one ball later. A starting asking rate of 7.10 has ballooned to 8.00.The first ball from Rashid that Maxwell faces is blasted over deep midwicket. There is a violence to the shot that makes a slog-sweep look like a Game-of-Thrones beheading. In Rashid’s next over, Maxwell repeats the shot, not as cleanly and not as square, but with enough to get another six. Two balls later, he shows he can do finesse as well as brute force, twirling wrists to get a boundary to deep square leg.The script has been upended by Maxwell. However badly IPL 2021 has gone for Sunrisers, they could always count on Rashid controlling the middle overs. And now Maxwell, in perhaps the IPL form of his life, is casually tearing that playbook with swishes of his bat. Without the safety net of Rashid’s middle-overs control, there is no way Sunrisers can hope to defend a total as meagre as 141.Umran Malik’s spell of 4-0-21-1 helped increase the required rate through the middle overs•BCCIThat Sunrisers stayed in the game without allowing it to run away is down to Umran Malik. It could be a chant one day. While Rashid was taken for 24 runs in two overs, Malik sandwiched him with a spell of 3-0-10-1. In what might have been unthinkable, Sunrisers have got a modicum of middle-overs control despite Rashid going for 12 an over, thanks to a 21-year-old playing only his second ever IPL game, and fourth game of white-ball cricket at the senior level (one List A, three T20s). Malik didn’t just bowl quick, he bowled quick on a surface where the other bowlers are finding success by taking pace off the ball, with cutters that gripped. He bowled quick enough to have Maxwell – in supreme hitting form – hopping and being late on the ball. He bowled so quick he registered 153kph on the speed gun, the fastest delivery in IPL 2021 so far.If he travelled at that speed from his hometown Jammu to Abu Dhabi, he’d get there in just a tick over 14 hours.***Cricketing journeys don’t travel at the speed of an Malik thunderbolt, and his has barely begun. It has already taken him almost a full season of being a net bowler with Sunrisers, and then Covid-19 hitting a team-mate, to get an opportunity. The first time Malik bowled to the likes of David Warner and Kane Williamson in the Sunrisers Hyderabad nets, he was scared. A fear borne out of nerves. “I was first scared to bowl to them, I was very nervous,” he told . “Then I prayed to god that let me bowl well to them. I thought if I have to beat them I have to hit the right length. I kept beating them and I learned from that, I kept bowling on that same length. That made a big difference.”

“The first time I came for trials I didn’t even know what spikes were. I was bowling in jogging shoes”Umran Malik

At his first Under-19 trial, he didn’t even know there existed shoes with spikes for fast bowlers. He was bowling in jogging shoes.”I used to bowl quickly from the start. I used to play tennis-ball cricket, and there too I was the quickest. I would bowl fast yorkers there in one-over matches,” he said. “In 2018, there was a trial for Under-19 cricketers. I bowled there and the selectors saw me. The first time I came for trials I didn’t even know what spikes were. I was bowling in jogging shoes. A friend was there with me, he gave me spikes to play. So then I came into the Under-19 team for one-dayers. And the next year I played Under-23. I was practicing regularly since 2018. Then I played in the Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali. And then I was a net bowler with the franchise.”Team-mate Jason Holder confirmed how much of a tough time Malik had given the batters in the nets. “He’s just been consistent in training, he’s been giving us quite a hard time in training,” Holder said at the post-match press conference. “He’s been very, very hard to get hold of… Extra pace always adds a boost to any bowling attack. It’s good to see his control as well too. A lot of guys who bowl quick over the years, may sometimes seem erratic but he’s been pretty consistent. He’s grouped really good deliveries together.”In his first three overs in particular, which Holder termed as a ‘grouping’ of good deliveries together was in evidence. There was movement off the pitch, to right-hander and left-hander, while the pace meant the batters had to be extra vigilant. Royal Challengers had prepared for Malik, but you can’t exactly replicate facing 150kph deliveries in the middle.”He tends to bowl hard lengths, so that was pretty clear in terms of what we were expecting today,” Royal Challengers coach Mike Hesson said. “But yeah, if you haven’t faced a bowler for the first time and they run in and bowl quick, obviously it does take a few balls to line it up. If he bowls nice and tight, which he did in terms of his lines, then it can be tough to score.”There are a lot of ingredients for success, with the one skill that can’t be coached: pace. In time, Malik will be studied more, analysed more, have more advice in his ears, have people springing up to grab his 15 seconds of fame. But whether he makes it through that or not is for later. For now, it’s about a 21-year-old pulling back a match in a trying period, and doing it while bowling 150kph. Pace is pace.

Buckingham claims four to put South Australia on top

Buckingham took 4 for 49 to help bowl Tasmania out for 195 despite Kellepotha’s 50 on debut for Tasmania

South Australia seamer Jordan Buckingham bagged four wickets to put South Australia on top of their Sheffield Shield clash with Tasmania at Adelaide Oval.Tasmania debutant Ruwantha Kellepotha led a rescue mission for his new team, scoring a half-century but it was the home side’s day.Batting at No.8, Kellepotha top-scored with 50 as Tasmania could only manage 195 after winning the toss on Friday. They slumped to 86 for 6 before Jake Doran made 44 at No.6 and tailender Gabe Bell posted his highest first-class score of 27.Buckingham led the attack with 4 for 49, and South Australia at stumps were well-placed at 116 for 3.Jake Lehmann had made 37 and Jake Fraser-McGuirk was also looking well-set on 26.Kellepotha moved from Sri Lanka, where the legspinner played first-class cricket, in 2013.The 34-year-old played one Shield game for Victoria, and also had three games with the Melbourne Renegades in the BBL, but moved south ahead of this season and broke into the Tasmanian team.He hit two fours and three sixes in his 104-ball innings. Lehmann gave him a life on 31 when he dropped a chance in the deep off legspinner Lloyd Pope.SA player Hanno Jacobs had to leave the field after he was hit on the head while trying to take a catch. He was later cleared of injury. After his important contribution at No.10, Bell then struck twice to remove Henry Hunt and fellow SA opener Mackenzie Harvey, making his Shield debut.Billy Stanlake snared the wicket of Jason Sangha to leave the home side in early strife at 63 for 3.But Lehmann, who scored at faster than a run a ball, and Fraser-McGurk batted through to stumps. Tasmania must break up their partnership early on Saturday to have any hope of a first-innings lead.SA fielded a recast batting line-up, with captain Nathan McSweeney away on Australia A duties. Tasmania similarly made several changes because of injury and national commitments. After five games, SA are fourth on the Shield ladder in their title defence with only one win, and Tasmania are third.

Man Utd now preparing £87m bid to sign "superb" star similar to Declan Rice

Manchester United are pursuing new reinforcements in January and could now be set to submit a bid for one of Europe’s most high-profile midfielders.

Man Utd looking towards the January window

Admittedly, the Red Devils have enjoyed a mixed start to the Premier League season and will now look to take advantage of the chance to move up a few places within a tight collective of sides all vying for a spot in the European slots.

On Monday, Manchester United’s frustrating defeat at home to Everton brought back some old scars that have been a feature of Ruben Amorim’s tenure at the club, with his side unable to break down a spirited Toffees outfit despite having a man advantage for most of proceedings.

Falling flat in attack, Joshua Zirkzee’s emergence after failing to earn a regular place in the side this season was questioned by BBC Radio Manchester’s Gaz Drinkwater, who believes Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount should’ve been brought into the starting side instead.

He said: “Bring Mount and Kobbie Mainoo into the starting XI. He obviously doesn’t see Mainoo as a midfielder because he can’t get in the team in that position. Amorim sees him as a number 10 or maybe even a false-nine type player where maybe they [the front three] interchange a bit.

“I don’t understand the logic of bringing in a totally cold Joshua Zirkzee into the game, who has basically had zero minutes this season, and he did nothing.”

Without doubt, the Red Devils will need to recruit wisely in January as they begin to feel the effects of a hefty schedule, and they could now be set to lodge a bid for a high-profile midfielder.

Man Utd ready bid for Federico Valverde

According to reports in Spain, Manchester United are preparing a £87m bid for Federico Valverde, and he may be allowed to depart amid a spate of up and down performances for Real Madrid.

The Uruguay international may now be set for a change of scenery and would be open to a move elsewhere, potentially re-establishing himself as the central part of a project at Old Trafford.

Labelled “superb” by Thibaut Courtois, Valverde has registered four assists in 17 appearances across all competitions this season. Overall, he has scored 32 times and laid on 35 goals for his teammates in 340 appearances for Los Blancos, cementing himself as a fan favourite.

Amorim is confident that his versatility, quality and combativeness could form a new dynamic in the engine room as they look to reclaim their place among the elite of English football.

Real Madrid aren’t totally closed off to selling Valverde, creating a scenario that could work out for all parties if the 27-year-old makes a headline-grabbing move to English shores.

Cubs Reveal New ‘Blues Alternate’ Uniforms for 2025 Season and Fans Already Love Them

We might not know what the Chicago Cubs 2025 season will look like just yet, but we do know one thing—they’ll look good doing it.

On Thursday, the team unveiled their “Blues Alternate” uniforms for the upcoming season.

The new look, presented by motorola razr (sure, why not) brings back a baby blue colorway that the Cubs haven’t rocked on the field since 1981, and serve as a nod to the city’s close ties to the blues.

The new jerseys are set to make their debut on April 5 against the San Diego Padres at Wrigley Field.

The new kits come complete with plenty of hidden easter eggs for those looking to get into the details.

The immediate reception of the new jerseys was near-universally positive, something increasingly rare in the online age.

They’ll look even better on the field.

Another Brookes barrage puts Worcestershire on victory trail

Allrounder takes match tally of sixes to 15 as visitors close in on rare Edgbaston win

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay24-Jul-2025 Warwickshire 184 and 55 for 2 need a further 338 runs to beat Worcestershire 333 and 243 (Brookes 87, Roderick 50) Ethan Brookes climbed into Warwickshire’s bowlers again, in record-breaking fashion, to keep Worcestershire on course for a vital Rothesay County Championship victory at Edgbaston.Of his side’s second-innings total of 243, Brookes’ share was a violent 87 from 137 balls. He struck seven sixes which, added to his eight in the first innings, amounted to 15 in the match – a record for any individual at Edgbaston, surpassing the 12 by Ian Botham for Somerset in 1985 and Dean Jones for Australia in 1989.The former Warwickshire allrounder’s barrage left his old team needing 393 to win and they closed the third day on 55 for 2 after losing both openers in the first four overs.Worcestershire resumed on the third morning on 31 without loss, already 180 ahead, but were pegged back by disciplined bowling. The opening partnership reached 80 in 32 overs before three wickets fell for 12 runs in 51 balls. Gareth Roderick (50 off 110) edged an expansive drive at Beau Webster. Jake Libby’s 149 minutes of toil for 25 ended when he pulled Ed Barnard to midwicket. Kashif Ali collected a tortuous 29-ball duck when he pulled Corey Rocchiccioli to short fine leg.As Warwickshire went on the defensive, Rocchiccioli bowling on or outside leg stump, Worcestershire’s batters appeared unsure how to handle such a big advantage. That advantage began to diminish as Ethan Bamber bowled Adam Hose and had Tom Taylor caught at point and Rocchiccioli’s leg-stump probing was rewarded when Brett D’Oliviera tickled a leg-side catch to wicketkeeper Kai Smith and Ben Allison nudged to leg slip.Seven wickets fell for 52 runs in 22 overs but Brookes defended diligently as he awaited support. It arrived from Bertie Foreman, who got the scoreboard moving again before edging Webster to second slip, and then Adam Finch. Having added 88 in the first innings, this time Brookes and Finch put on 91.The cricket descended into farce after tea as Warwickshire went ultra-negative. Rocchiccioli wheeled away while Olly Hannon-Dalby bowled far outside off stump to deny Brookes scope to seek the short boundary. Warwickshire’s supporters bore it stoically though if an opposing team had resorted to such tactics some forthright views would have emanated from the stands. The grim spectacle concluded when Brookes hoisted Barnard to deep fine leg and Finch sliced Webster to second slip,Warwickshire faced a target of 393 in a day plus 26 overs, weather permitting, and in moderate light, soon lost their openers. Rob Yates was trapped in front by a rapid shooter from Khurram Shahzad; Alex Davies chipped to midwicket. Dan Mousley and Zen Malik batted assiduously to the close but Worcestershire would be gutted, from this position, not to bank their first Championship win at Edgbaston since 1993.

Wolves SACK Vitor Pereira! Rock-bottom Premier League strugglers make huge call despite handing manager new contract in September

Premier League strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers have sacked manager Vitor Pereira following the club’s poor start to the season. The Molineux club are the only team in England’s top four divisions yet to win a league game in 2025-26, having lost eight of their 10 matches under the Portuguese, who was only handed a new contract in September.

  • Wolves dismiss Pereira with club bottom of the Premier League

Following a winless start to the league season which has seen Wolves earn just two points from 10 games – via draws with Tottenham and Brighton – the club are currently bottom of the table. The Midlanders secured victories over West Ham and Everton in the Carabao Cup, but they have been unable to replicate that form in the league.

Confirming Pereira had been relieved of his duties after 11 months in charge, Wolves executive chairman Jeff Shi said in a club statement: “Vitor and his team worked tirelessly for Wolves and helped guide us through a challenging period last season, for which we are grateful.

“Unfortunately, the start to this season has been a disappointment and, despite our strong desire to give the head coach time and matches to find an improvement, we have reached a point where we must make a change.

“We thank Vitor and his staff for their efforts and wish them the very best for the future.”

Portuguese said he was 'trying everything' to improve club's form

In what has turned out to be Pereira’s final game in charge, Wolves suffered a 3-0 loss at Fulham on Saturday. Strikes from Ryan Sessegnon and Harry Wilson, as well as an own goal from defender Yerson Mosquera, brought about another defeat for Pereira's side, who were also reduced to 10 men after Emmanuel Agbadou was sent off after 36 minutes.

Following the game, Pereira said he was “trying everything” to arrest Wolves’ slide, telling the club’s official website: “I’m trying everything to mentally keep the team in conditions to compete. I had very good feelings from the last game, especially the second half, but I don’t think two days was enough to recover for this game. But it’s my responsibility.

“I’m not a manager to put the responsibilities on the players, but together, we need to have a talk, and to assume the responsibilities together as a group because we cannot accept this level that we played today.

“I understand [fans’ frustration] because if I’m not proud with what we did today, they – for sure – will not be. I must accept it because they are frustrated and I’m frustrated too.

“I’m suffering because it’s my work and I do my best every time, as I did last season, but today, technically, physically and practically, we didn’t play in our level. It means that they come here to support us and thanks for them, but in the end, I understand their frustration.

“I’m a fighter. I never give up. I’m not this kind of person. I will try my best in the next training to mentally recover the team, to tactically recover the organisation that we need for the next game.”

  • Pereira stressed importance of staying 'united' after signing new deal

Pereira was only handed a three-year contract in September as the club looked to install stability in the dugout. Following Nuno Espirito Santo’s four-year spell in charge between 2017 and 2021, steering the club to Premier League promotion in 2017-18, Wolves employed managers Bruno Lage, Julen Lopetegui and Gary O’Neil but none of them were able to achieve two years at the helm.

The new deal was also seen as a reward for Pereira after the former Porto boss helped the club avoid relegation to the Championship last season. Succeeding O’Neil in December 2024, the 57-year-old guided Wolves to 16th in the table, 17 points clear of the drop.

Speaking after signing his new contract, Pereira said: “I’m very proud to be Wolves head coach. It's an honour for me. This is the club that gave me the chance to come to the Premier League, the best league in the world. The people here embraced me as a member of the family, me and my staff we feel very good in the city, among the supporters.

“This is the moment that we need to be united. We are a one club city, and this city loves football. It is a passion. This is the spirit that we need to create together, to face and to compete with the best teams in this league.”

Ex-Porto boss involved in angry confrontation with fans after Burnley loss

But while the new contract was a show of support from the club’s hierarchy, Wolves’ form was unable to improve under Pereira. And with emotions running high following the last-gasp 3-2 league defeat against Burnley on 26 October, an angry confrontation took place between Pereira and the Molineux faithful, with the head coach needing to be pulled away.

Following the ugly scenes, Pereira said: "We understand the frustration of the people and supporters but what I must say, if we fight united with them, we can win games and compete and achieve our targets – without them, it is impossible. If we win two or three games in a row, things will change. Two months ago they sang my name, because together with the work we did last season, we are competing in the Premier League and not the Championship.

"Now they sing my name to sack me. If I was a supporter, I would feel proud of my team because they worked and showed the spirit, mentality and ambition to win the game, even losing 2-0 [after 30 minutes]. If you fight for 90 minutes to win a game and in the last minute, when the other team was trying to get a draw, wasting time to finish the game, defending in a low block to defend the result, even if we draw it was not fair. We deserved the three points but it's football. I feel proud of my players because they showed in a very difficult moment, the mentality, the team spirit, the organisation to try until the last minute to win the game."

Man Utd now eyeing record-breaking Lammens upgrade who's "good with his feet"

Manchester United are now targeting a record-breaking goalkeeper who’s “good with his feet”, and there are signs he could rival Senne Lammens for a starting spot.

Man Utd looking to sign new goalkeeper to rival Lammens

After arriving from Club Brugge at the end of the summer transfer window, Lammens’ introduction to the Man United starting XI has been gradual, with the Belgian making his first start in the 2-0 victory over Sunderland prior to the international break.

Having kept a clean sheet in his opening game, the 23-year-old is off to a solid start, making two saves from inside the box to keep Sunderland at bay, which resulted in a 7.8 SofaScore match rating, the highest of any player.

The Stretford End were clearly left impressed by their new goalkeeper’s performance, chating ‘Are you Schmeichel in disguise’, but it is still very early days, with a difficult trip to Anfield to come on Sunday.

Having struggled to find a suitable no.1 since the departure of David de Gea, Ruben Amorim will be hoping Lammens is the long-term solution between the sticks, but The Red Devils have now joined the race for another goalkeeper.

That is according to a report from The Boot Room, which reveals SC Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu has emerged as a genuine target for Man United, having watched him in action multiple times already this season.

Graeme Bailey adds that United want to bring in a new goalkeeper regardless of how Lammens performs, with the journalist also hinting that a deal for Atubolu could be possible.

Vivell's a fan: Man Utd devise plan to sign "elite" £40m midfielder with Wharton

The Red Devils are very keen on bringing in a new midfielder.

ByDominic Lund Oct 14, 2025

Bailey said: “United are doing their due diligence on goalkeepers, even if [Senne] Lammens comes in and does well, they still want and need another, as [Andre] Onana and [Altay] Bayindir won’t be hanging around in the long-term.

“They are well-versed on options, but I am told that Atubolu is one who has impressed United’s scouts this season. He is emerging as one of the very best in the Bundesliga, and Freiburg are expecting to sell in 2026.”

Record-breaking Atubolo could be instant Lammens upgrade

Lammens is off to a fantastic start at Old Trafford, but there are signs the Freiburg shot-stopper could be an instant upgrade, having already proven himself at a higher level than the former Club Brugge man.

In the 2024-25 season, the 23-year-old broke a Freiburg club record by going 576 minutes without conceding a goal, and he has since gone on to break a Bundesliga record by saving five penalties on the spin.

Not only has the German goalkeeper established himself as a top Bundesliga goalkeeper, but he is also better with his feet than Lammens, placing in the top 1% for touches per 90 over the past year.

Freiburg manager Julian Schuster has praised Atubolu in the past too, saying: “He has good reflexes. He makes good saves and is also good with his feet. We’re very happy to have him.”

It is always difficult to keep two goalkeepers happy, so it would be a risk to sign the Freiburg star, but there are clear signs he could challenge Lammens for a starting spot.

Luke Procter marshals Northamptonshire fightback

Skipper’s unbeaten 97 followed Derbyshire losing their last six wickets for 80

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay19-Apr-2025Northamptonshire skipper Luke Procter led from the front as his team fought back on the second day of the Rothesay County Championship Division Two match against Derbyshire at Derby.Procter made an unbeaten 97 and shared an opening stand of 143 with Ricardo Vasconcelos who passed 50 for the first time this season, scoring 82 off 117 balls, as the visitors closed on 236 for 3 in reply to Derbyshire’s 307.Procter also finished with figures of 3 for 61 with Justin Broad claiming 4 for 60 as Derbyshire lost their last six wickets for 80 runs, including Brooke Guest who top scored with 91.Northamptonshire’s bowlers had something to prove after a below par performance on the first day and they delivered a much improved display in terms of control and discipline.Guest had played a counter-attacking innings which had disturbed the bowler’s lines and he resumed with a crisp straight drive down the ground against Liam Guthrie to move into the nineties. But Guthrie had the last word when Guest went to drive a widish ball and dragged it into his stumps to give the visitors the early breakthrough they needed. When Broad replaced Guthrie, he found some inswing to trap Anuj Dal in front and then beat Martin Andersson’s loose drive to reduce Derbyshire to 267 for 7.Zak Chappell edged a forcing stroke behind to give Broad his third victim of the morning and Derbyshire were in danger of falling below 300 when Luis Reece was caught down the legside aiming to pull Guthrie.Blair Tickner secured a second bonus point when he pulled Dom Leech to the ropes before Procter took the new ball and had Jack Morley caught behind. It was a good session for the visitors who dominated the afternoon with Vasconcelos and Procter batting through to tea. Vasconcelos was close to being lbw to Tickner early in his innings but after a sketchy start, a glorious on drive off the New Zealand paceman showed his confidence and touch was returning. As well as he and Procter batted, it was not a good session for Derbyshire’s bowlers who failed to maintain the consistent lines to build pressure. An off drive off Andersson brought Vasconcelos his 10th four and took him to 50 before he whipped Reece to the midwicket boundary to bring up the 100 stand which came from 135 balls.Procter completed his half-century after tea and when Wayne Madsen could not cling on to a fierce chance at second slip off Tickner when Vasconcelos was on 76, it threatened to be expensive. It certainly looked that way when the opener pulled the next delivery for four but when Tickner tempted him with a wide-ish ball, he slashed it to gully where Andersson made no mistake.Vasconcelos knew he had thrown away the chance of a hundred and had to drag himself from the crease but he and Procter had given their team a good platform to build on.Procter was building another partnership with George Bartlett until Chappell got enough lift off a length to have the latter caught behind and James Sales never got going, playing across a full ball from Reece.Derbyshire were much better in an extended final session but Procter and Rob Keogh reduced the arrears to 71 before bad light ended play.
