Despite leading the North London side to a Europa League triumph over the Red Devils, whispers around the club suggest the Australian might not be in charge come next season, as revealed by The 2-1 victory not only brought them their first piece of silverware in 17 years, but also ended a 41-year wait for a European title. The win secured a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League and set up a UEFA Super Cup clash in August against either Inter Milan or Paris Saint-Germain.

With one year still left on his deal, Postecoglou’s continuation as head coach appears to hinge entirely on chairman Daniel Levy's judgement. It has been reported that the top boss has already begun exploring other managerial options, including Fulham’s Marco Silva, hinting that a managerial change could be on the horizon.

DID YOU KNOW?

In the aftermath of their Europa League success in Spain, many Tottenham players were tight-lipped about their manager’s future. Most avoided addressing Postecoglou’s potential departure directly, instead offering supportive words and stressing that the night was a moment for joy, not speculation. Still, reports from inside the dressing room indicate that many squad members do not expect Postecoglou to remain in charge beyond the summer. While there’s admiration for what he achieved, the feeling of finality seems to be growing.

If this season does mark the end of Postecoglou’s time at Tottenham, he leaves on a high note. The 58-year-old has developed a reputation for achieving silverware in the second season of his managerial stints — a pattern he extended with Spurs. He has publicly expressed his desire to see through the project he began upon arriving from Celtic in 2023, and hasn’t closed the door on continuing his work in North London. For now, though, all eyes will be on Sunday’s Premier League finale against Brighton — what could be his last outing in the Spurs dugout.

Nortje returns in Markram-led South Africa T20 World Cup squad

Ryan Rickelton and Ottniel Baartman have also earned call-ups and are set to earn their first T20I caps

Anrich Nortje will make his international comeback after a nine-month absence at the 2024 T20 World Cup. Nortje, who has been in action at IPL 2024, has been named in South Africa’s 15-player squad that will be led by Aiden Markram. Opening batter Ryan Rickelton and seamer Ottniel Baartman – both standout performers at this year’s SA20 – have also earned call-ups and could earn their first T20I caps.Rickelton was the leading run-scorer in the SA20 and the second-highest run-scorer at the recent CSA T20 Challenge, and will likely partner Quinton de Kock at the top of the order. The T20 World Cup could also be de Kock’s last international appearance – he retired from ODI cricket last year but was persuaded to stay on in T20Is for this event. De Kock is no longer centrally contracted by CSA as he pursues opportunities in T20 leagues.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

White-ball coach Rob Walter confirmed that despite poor form in his last three tournaments, de Kock has been picked on historic performances. “Quinny, we’ve seen him do it time and time again for us,” Walter said. “Reeza [Hendricks] has been a star performer for us in T20 cricket, was a standout in this domestic CSA T20 challenge again, and Ryan Rickelton has had two outstanding competitions really where he’s played the brand of cricket that we’re looking to play. And then we’re going to have Aidan Markram and that’ll be the top order. It’s mostly a performance-based decision and from Quinton’s point of view is just a real knowledge of what he’s capable of.”Baartman, the second-highest wicket-taker at the SA20, has been chosen with the death overs in mind. “Over the last couple of years, he’s been outstanding. Butin particular in the SA20, he was a cut above the rest. He really showed himself as a quality death bowler,” Walter said. “We’ve seen particularly in the last couple of weeks in IPL being able to manage the death is going to be critical and he is someone who offers that speciality. If you look at the numbers, he’s been successful through all the phases of the game. He’s worked really hard to get his name into the mix through sheer performance.”The IPL has also given Walter the confidence to pick Nortje, who has taken seven wickets in six matches for Delhi Capitals so far. He has conceded at 13.36 runs an over but has bowled fast. “Anrich has got another month before the World Cup starts so I have no doubt he’ll hit his straps,” Walter said. “It’s good to see that his speed is up. The one thing Anrich has that separates him from others is raw pace. There’s not many guys who can bowl 150kph and he can. Pace is an X-factor.”Nortje’s speeds helped him be selected ahead of Lungi Ngidi, who missed the IPL with a lower back injury but returned during the CSA T20 Challenge and is one of two traveling reserves. Left-arm seamer Nandre Burger, currently with Rajasthan Royals, is the other. The squad includes four frontline seamers in Nortje, Baartman, Kagiso Rabada and Gerald Coetzee, with Ngidi and Burger as traveling reserves, and three spinners. Left-arm spinners Keshav Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin are part of the squad, along with wristspinner Tabraiz Shamsi. That left room for only one allrounder: Marco Jansen, with Andile Phehlukwayo and Wiaan Mulder missing out.Their batting will include a strong middle order of Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller and Tristan Stubbs and no batters among the reserves. Faf du Plessis, who was in line for an international comeback, has not been named while Rassie van der Dussen and Matthew Breetzke – the leading run-scorer in the CSA T20 Challenge and third-highest in the SA20 – have both been overlooked.Rassie van der Dussen hasn’t been included in the T20 World Cup squad•AFP/Getty Images

Van der Dussen and Breetkze will, however, travel with a second-string South Africa side to play West Indies in three T20Is that precede the World Cup, though that squad could change based on player availability from the IPL. That squad includes uncapped legspinner Nqaba Peter, who was the second-highest wicket-taker in the CSA T20 Challenge. The other absentees from South Africa’s last T20 World Cup squad, in 2022, are former captain Temba Bavuma, Rilee Rossouw and Wayne Parnell. Bavuma, Parnell and Ngidi’s exclusions, in particular, have created something of a complication for Walter because the squad is short on players of colour. The 15-man traveling group includes only six players of colour and one black African (Rabada), which will leave South Africa short of the targets at the tournament. The current target requires the national team to field an average of six players of colour of which at least two must be black African over the course of a season, so Walter has the opportunity to make that up in other matches but is mindful that he could face criticism over reduced representation.”My number one imperative is to create a winning team. In order to do that, every time I pick a side, I’ve got to pick the best team at the time that I think will give us a chance of doing that. That said, the system needs to really up the ante so that in six months, 12 months, or two years’ time, and in particular when we reach the 2027 [ODI] World Cup at home, that the demographics and the representation in our team starts to look a bit different.”Outside of the World Cup, we’ll continue to use our bilateral series to grow our base of players, to create international opportunity, to give opportunity for players to put their skills at a higher level and just make sure that we are delivering on a process that’s going to change what our team looks like as we move forward.”Asked whether, in the absence of a selection panel, he required special dispensation to fall short of the target, Walter indicated that the squad was chosen in collaboration with Enoch Nkwe, South Africa’s director of cricket. “No squad that I pick is picked without discussion with the director of cricket. It’s as simple as that.”South Africa begin their T20 World Cup campaign on June 3 against Sri Lanka in New York.South Africa T20 World Cup squad Aiden Markram (capt), Ottniel Baartman, Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Bjorn Fortuin, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, David Miller, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

England are, of course, reigning champions, and also reached the 2023 World Cup final, and Stanway insists that she and her team-mates are ready to show exactly what they are made of in what has turned into a do-or-die fixture.

  • WHAT STANWAY SAID

Stanway told reporters: "What we want going forward is to make actions and stop talking. I didn't want to do the press conference today because I'm fed up of talking now.

"It's time that we focus and we want to put things right on the pitch in order for us to be able to talk. We want to create action from what happened on Saturday and the only way to do that is the game."

She added: "We want the game to come around as quick as possible. We want to make change.

"We've spoken about wanting to be 'proper England' and going back to what we're good at and our traditional style of football — tough tackles and remembering why we're here. Sometimes it's about blocking out the noise and getting on the pitch and getting stuck in.

"I had a message from someone I know that said: 'It is just like a bad night out and you want to forget it as much as possible. Move onto the next one. That's exactly what we're going to do."

Harry Kane opens his Club World Cup scoring account as Michael Olise scores game-winner in thrilling 2-1 win over Boca Juniors

Kane watched as his Bayern team-mates scored 10 goals without him in their tournament opener against Auckland City in Cincinnati. But in the team's second game he made sure his impact was felt, as Die Roten escaped with a 2-1 win in front of a packed, and largely pro-Boca, crowd at Hard Rock Stadium.

After the Bavarian giants had an early goal ruled out after a VAR review, the Englishman opened the scoring in the 18th minute, pouncing on a ricocheted ball and rolling it into the bottom corner. The first 25 minutes were an attacking onslaught from the German club, but despite their dominance, Bayern couldn’t convert several golden chances.

Kingsley Coman completely mis-hit a ball served perfectly to him on the goal-line by Serge Gnabry. Olise then found himself one-on-one with Agustin Marchesin, but the Boca goalkeeper smothered the ball before the winger could finish. The Frenchman also forced Marchesin into a brilliant save from a free-kick.

After withstanding heavy pressure for most of the first period, Boca – fuelled by their passionate supporters – fought back. Their breakthrough came in the 65th minute, when Rodrigo Andres Battaglia intercepted a pass and launched a perfect through ball to Miguel Merentiel. The striker danced past Josip Stanisic and blasted a shot past Manuel Neuer, igniting Hard Rock Stadium and swinging momentum toward Boca.

But Olise responded. The 23-year-old found space in a crowded box and finally beat Marchesin with a pinpoint finish from Kane's layoff with six minutes left to play, effectively sealing the win for Bayern, who had a late third ruled out for offside. With the result, Bayern advance to the knockout stage, while Boca will now need to beat Auckland to have a chance of advancing – depending on the score of the Benfica-Bayern match on Matchday 3.

The result ends the strong start by South American teams at the tournament, marking CONMEBOL's first loss.

Despite being fruitless in the first half, Olise's work rate was impressive. He was central to a lot of the positive attacking moments for Bayern and didn't appear to let his missed shots affect him in the second half. He was relentless and showed ice in his veins for his match-winner.

THE BIG LOSER

It's tough to find fault on a team that punched so highly above its weight but Boca's defence struggled whenever Bayern got into the box. With both Kane and Olise's goals, there was poor positioning and players left open. It's also important to note this is the second-straight game where Miguel Angel Russo's side conceded costly goals that saw the result go against them. Boca had a 2-0 lead against Benfica, only for the Portuguese giants to hit back twice and snatch a draw. The Argentine club can't afford any slip-ups against Auckland, a team that is playing for pride at this stage after being eliminated following a 6-0 loss to Benfica.

With both clubs now at the Club World Cup in Florida, Carreras remains a Benfica player for now.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Los Blancos see the 22-year-old as a long-term solution at left-back, but they're applying the same financial strategy used for Dean Huijsen and Franco Mastantuono, staggered payments over time rather than a one-time fee. Activating the release clause would force them to pay the entire fee in one lump sum. The Spaniards' preferred approach gives them flexibility with cash flow and helps avoid unfavourable tax rates. However, Benfica know Madrid need Carreras and are using their leverage. The additional 20 per cent resale clause owed to Manchester United complicates the deal further.

  • WHAT RUI COSTA SAID

Benfica president Rui Costa denied any agreement with Madrid, and said: "We haven't reached an agreement with Madrid. There were proposals that didn't convince us. Not for Alvaro or any other player."

His message from Florida was clear: Benfica are not in a hurry to sell and will not accept terms that don’t match their valuation.

Not just Aaronson: 49ers must sell Leeds dud who's rinsed them of £22m

With less than two months left in the 2024/25 season, it would be a surprise to know that Leeds United will have one eye on the summer transfer window with numerous big calls needing to be made.

Daniel Farke has led the Whites to the top spot in the table with just eight games remaining, but it’s unclear how many of his most recent starting eleven will remain at Elland Road next season.

Manor Solomon and Joe Rothwell are both currently spending the season on loan in Yorkshire, with it currently unclear whether either player will return on a permanent basis next season.

Leeds United'sManorSolomoncelebrates scoring their first goal

Junior Firpo, Sam Bryan and Joshua Guilavogui’s deals all expire at the end of June, with decisions needing to be made if they are to be offered an extension on their current contracts.

One thing is for sure, with Farke needing to finally cash in on one player who’s been well below the levels expected of him over the last couple of months in the Championship.

Why Leeds must sell Aaronson this summer

Attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson moved to Leeds in the summer of 2022 from Austrian side RB Salzburg, costing a mammoth £25m, but was unable to prevent the side being relegated from the Premier League.

As a result of the drop back into the second tier, he would leave on loan, joining Union Berlin, before returning to Elland Road for the ongoing season, looking to be a key player in the early stages of the season.

The American notched nine of his ten goal contributions by the end of December, only managing one in the last four months, struggling to match the early-season heights he set for himself.

He’s often come under fire for his lack of impact, costing the side two points in the last clash with QPR, by giving the ball away in his own area before Koki Saito fired home for the hosts.

Given his recent form, it’s clear he’s not at the level required, with Farke needing to cut his losses, offloading him alongside another player to allow for fresh blood in the squad.

The Leeds player who’s bled the club of £22m

Regardless of what division Leeds find themselves in next season, additions are needed across the board to hand Farke with the added strength in depth he needs.

LeedsUnitedmanagerDaniel Farke celebrates after the match

However, outgoings could be used to fund such additions, with Aaronson just one of those who could command a decent transfer fee given the money paid for him a few years ago.

Striker Patrick Bamford originally joined the club back in the summer of 2018, looking to provide the goods in front of goal after his £7m transfer from Middlesbrough.

Whilst he notched 10 goals in his debut year, it wasn’t enough to secure promotion, losing to Derby County in the play-off semi-finals during Marcelo Bielsa’s first year at the helm.

However, he would play a key role in the promotion-winning season the year after, notching 16 goals and maintaining his place at the top end of the pitch under the Argentine – having his best-ever season in 2020/21.

Leeds striker Patrick Bamford.

The 31-year-old scored 17 Premier League goals and subsequently earned an England call-up, but he’s massively struggled to replicate such form since, only registering 17 goals over the last four seasons combined.

This year alone, he’s been plagued by injuries, featuring just 11 matches and unable to find the back of the net once, with the club desperately needing to offload him given his £80k-per-week wages.

Bamford has since earned over £15m in wages during his time at the club, which, when combined with his transfer fee, has seen him bleed the club dry of around £22m.

Whilst he made himself a fan-favourite during his early years in Yorkshire, he’s rapidly declined over the last few years, with Bamford not proving value for money given his staggering wages.

He’s entering the back end of his career, with the 49ers needing to cut ties to provide Farke with the budget to make his own stamp on the forward line ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Disney Star, Viacom 18, Zee among potential bidders for WIPL media rights

The BCCI has adopted a closed bid auction method, and will announce the winners on Monday

The inaugural season of the WIPL is set to be held in March•BCCI

All the major Indian broadcasters, including Disney Star*, Viacom 18, Sony and Zee, will be bidding for the Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) media rights at an auction on Monday. The BCCI has adopted a closed bid auction method for the day-long event, and will announce the winner on the same day.ESPNcricinfo has learned that eight potential bidders had bought the tender document which was put on sale in December. The rights, spanning a five-year period between 2023-27, comprised three categories: linear (TV), digital and combined (TV and digital). The rights will be sold globally, including India. The BCCI has also decided not to set a base price as it wants the market to determine its value considering the WIPL is untapped territory. This is in contrast to the process it adopted when it sold the media rights for the men’s IPL last year for a record net sum of close to US$ 6 billion. Those rights were split across multiple categories and regions and were fiercely contested by multiple players with the auction exercise stretching for three days.Related

The WIPL media rights are significant because they constitute the majority of the central commercial pool from which the five franchises will get 80% of their revenue. In the tender document for franchise rights, the BCCI has mentioned that it would share 80% of the commercial rights income it derives from WIPL with the teams in the first five years, 60% in the following five years, and 50% after that. In addition, the franchises will also get 80% of the money derived from the central licensing rights.Having conducted the Women’s T20 Challenge initially as an exhibition event, the BCCI last year finally decided to launch the WIPL with its inaugural edition set to be played in March. While the BCCI has not yet announced the tournament dates, it is understood that the first season, spanning 22 matches, is likely to be played between March 5 and 23.The BCCI will unveil the five WIPL franchises on January 25. The financial bids of these franchises, currently submitted in sealed envelopes, will be opened on that day. The BCCI has listed 10 cities in the bid document. So far, at least eight of the 10 men’s IPL franchises have confirmed they would be bidding for a franchise.

Spurs now willing to sell "fantastic" £15m forward; two English clubs keen

Tottenham Hotspur are now willing to sell a “fantastic” forward in the summer, looking to receive a fee of around £10m – £15m, and two big English clubs are interested in a move.

Tottenham eyeing attacking upgrades

It has been far from an ideal season for Tottenham, and while some of their struggles can be put down to the injury crisis they’ve endured, there is no denying they will need to strengthen in the summer if they are to start competing near the top of the table.

Spurs are looking to bring in additional depth in attack, and a report has revealed they are now eyeing a surprise £6m+ move for Villarreal striker Ayoze Perez, with the former Newcastle United man impressing in La Liga this season.

Perez is seemingly more likely to be brought in as a rotation option, but there are also indications they could pursue a move for a top striker, with it recently being revealed they are now ready to trigger the £62m striker in Matheus Cunha’s Wolves contract.

Given that Cunha would be an expensive purchase, Tottenham may have to cash-in on some of their current players to help fund the move, and GiveMeSport are reporting they are now willing to sell Manor Solomon in the summer.

Solomon has spent the current season on loan at Leeds United, where he has impressed, with the Championship promotion-hopefuls now looking to make his stay permanent in the summer, while Everton are also said to be keen.

Spurs would be looking to receive a relatively low fee of around £10m – £15m for the Israeli, although they would still make a tidy profit, having signed him on a free transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk back in 2023.

Solomon needs a permanent move elsewhere

The 25-year-old’s performances in the Championship this season have been very impressive, picking up seven goals and seven assists to aid his side’s push for promotion back to the Premier League.

However, the left-winger has never managed to force his way into Postecoglou’s plans, and there may be even more competition for a starting spot next season, given that Spurs are planning to bring in some new attacking options.

As such, while journalist Adam Pope has lauded the Leeds loanee as “fantastic” for his performances this season, it is probably the right decision to sanction his departure this summer.

Tottenham can use the tidy profit they will make to fund their other transfer business, with the likes of Perez and Cunha of interest, while there have also been indications they could make a £83m offer for Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens.
