Arsenal view "powerful" Premier League star as alternative to Bukayo Saka

Arsenal were dealt some very worrying news on Saturday, with England confirming that winger Bukayo Saka has withdrawn from international duty through injury.

Bukayo Saka returns to Arsenal after England injury

The Three Lions’ humiliation at the hands of Greece wasn’t the only sorry sight for on-looking Arsenal supporters on Thursday, as fans were given a reason to fear the worst when Saka was substituted early in the second half with pain in his right leg.

Any hope that this was just a precaution is now blown to the wind, as England announced today that Saka has returned to Arsenal for an assessment on his injury.

The north Londoners – who have already seen Martin Odegaard, Riccardo Calafiori, Mikel Merino, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Gabriel Jesus, Ben White, Jurrien Timber, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Kai Havertz and Kieran Tierney injured at various points this season – now face the prospect of being without Saka for an extended period.

During the last international break, Arsenal lost club captain Odegaard through ankle ligament damage, and they now sweat over the fitness of star winger Saka, who is absolutely imperative for manager Mikel Arteta.

There is optimism that Havertz will be available for Bournemouth in their next Premier League game after the makeshift striker withdrew from international duty for Germany. In any case, you could spare a penny for Arteta’s thoughts right now, given he’s in danger of losing two star players through injury over the last two international breaks.

It is too early to say just how long the £195,000-per-week star will be out for or whether he’s even a doubt for Bournemouth, but Saka appeared to pull his hamstring against Greece – so there is reason to believe it could be serious.

In the build-up to this news, Arsenal have been linked with signing a backup option who can come in for Saka when required, and it is believed the Gunners have their eye on Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo.

Arsenal chiefs view Semenyo as Saka alternative

According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal view Semenyo as an alternative to Saka, with Arteta a personal admirer of the former Bristol City star.

The 24-year-old – who’s started this season in impressive fashion with three goals and an assist across eight games in all competitions – has been praised for his form by teammates and pundits alike.

“As a team, we knew the quality he has and we saw that last year,” said teammate Lewis Cook at the start of October.

“He’s got to just keep working hard – being aggressive and being clinical. He’s got a lot better at running back and helping out the team too. He’s a powerful lad and has all the ability in the world. Hopefully, he can continue to show that.”

While this transfer would most likely be for next summer, it is clear that Arsenal need quality options in case star men like Saka become unavailable. Semenyo could fit the bill in this regard, with Jamie Redknapp also praising the Ghanaian this season.

“He’s a lovely footballer to watch,” said Redknapp on Premier League Productions.

“The manager’s taken him to another level, he obviously has that capability because you saw it with Solanke. I’m just seeing him elevate his game right now, we’ll talk about ‘why does that happen?’, a lot of it is purely on confidence.

“He looks like he’s enjoying his football, his shoulders are back, he’s relaxed, every time he gets it, he plays with a bit of a swagger. He’s actually a joy to watch right now.”

Spurs ace just dropped a 4.5/10 clanger on international duty

The less said about Tottenham’s horrific 3-2 defeat to Brighton the better, right? Quite. Either way, Spurs did enter this international break off the back of a mini-revival.

Prior to that meeting on the South Coast, Ange Postecoglou’s men had won five games on the spin after being defeated by rivals Arsenal.

Brennan Johnson has been a sizeable part of that, and in a good way too, with the former Nottingham Forest man scoring six games in a row for the Lilywhites.

Tottenham winger Brennan Johnson

It marks quite the turnaround for the Welshman who was forced to deactivate his social media accounts after receiving vile abuse for his poor display in the north London derby.

Did his fortunes continue for Wales over the break? You bet it did.

Brennan Johnson's performances for Wales

The fear when a player heads off on international duty for their country is colossal. They will either get injured or it’ll mark the end of an impressive run of form.

Well, although Johnson was injured during Wales’ 2-2 draw with Iceland last Friday night, the Spurs winger did get on the scoresheet again to make it seven goals in seven matches.

It’s safe to say he is rampant right now, although he won’t score many easier goals than the one against the Icelandic national side last week.

Harry Wilson fired an effort towards goal that was saved and then clawed off the line by the goalkeeper. Who was waiting? Johnson, of course, who tapped the ball home from a matter of yards out.

Sadly, the bad news was that he only played 45 minutes in the match and was withdrawn as a ‘precaution’ due to injury.

It’s unknown whether he’ll be fit to face West Ham at the weekend but Postecoglou will be keeping all his fingers and toes crossed that the winger is fit and firing. He has been vital this term.

Brennan Johnson

Despite Johnson’s goal, it wasn’t all plain sailing for Spurs players over the break, something Micky van de Ven will testify to.

Micky van de Ven's performances for Netherlands

The Dutchman started the Netherlands’ 1-1 draw with Hungary last week at left-back where defensively he put in a strong performance, winning four duels, completing 97% of his passes and amassing 112 touches.

That said, unlike that infamous assist against Manchester United a few weeks ago, he did not offer much going forward having failed to register a single attempted cross or key pass.

Matters can’t have been helped by Virgil van Dijk’s red card in the clash but that moment did present the defender with a massive opportunity against Germany on Monday night.

Due to the Liverpool star’s suspension, it meant that Van de Ven started at centre-back but it’s safe to say he didn’t leave too many impressed.

The stats actually suggest that the Tottenham ace had an impressive night, completing 91% of his passes and winning three of his four duels, but he was slightly at fault for the goal. He failed to clear a corner, merely handing the ball straight to Stuttgart’s Jamie Leweling who lashed home a thunderous strike.

Van de Ven was subsequently handed a 4.5/10 match rating by Dutch publication Football Oranje, who wrote: ‘Where was the strong, confident Van de Ven that we see at Tottenham? He froze in the centre and was guilty of constant ball loss’.

Former Tottenham star Rafael van de Vaart wasn’t too complimentary either, stating on punditry after the game: “Micky van de Ven.. it’s all well and good but he ain’t no Virgil van Dijk, of course we miss him.”

So, perhaps he’s actually better at left-back? Time will tell, of course, but he’s certainly been an excellent asset for Spurs in the centre of defence.

New Champions League format has made for entertaining matches, but 'Swiss Model' league phase has proven to be too long and lacking in real jeopardy

The 'Swiss Model' has been lauded by some for generating more excitement, but it completely misses the point

Jamie Carragher is among those sold on the new Champions League format. "It's been brilliant," the former Liverpool defender wrote on social media on Thursday. "Instead of the bore fest we’ve had for years on the last match day, next week will be sensational."

UEFA will be absolutely delighted with themselves. It appears they've already managed to convince a significant number of pundits and supporters that the 'Swiss Model' has been a success; a positive development for the competition and, by consequence, the game itself.

Nothing could be further from the truth, though. The format's flaws have been brutally exposed and the only real beneficiaries of its introduction have been UEFA and Europe's elite – which was the objective all along.

Getty'Not great'

As soon as the longstanding Super League threat finally materialised in April 2021, UEFA knew it needed to act. Europe's richest clubs wanted more games, because more games means more money, so that's exactly what UEFA gave them in May 2022.

The initial idea was to expand the pre-knockout round to 10 games. but even after a bitter backlash from coaches, players and domestic leagues with serious concerns over an already congested international schedule, they still managed to push through a new format featuring eight matchdays – and sneak in an additional play-off round. It was a Super League in everything but name. Everyone knew it too.

"It's very good that the new Super League is off the table," a visibly bewildered Jurgen Klopp told reporters in April 2021,” but the new Champions League is not great. UEFA showed me the idea and I said, 'I don't like it.' I've no idea where [they'll] put the extra games in… But the show must go on."

It was clear that sacrifices would have to be made, but only by the organisers of domestic tournaments, such as the once-prestigious FA Cup, and, more significantly, the players.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesNo concern for player welfare

UEFA justified its expansion by claiming that football fans wanted to see "more top European matches" – and at an earlier stage of the Champions League. However, what's the point in having more heavyweight showdowns if neither participant is in peak physical condition?

As an exasperated Pep Guardiola pointed out four years ago, "Every time we speak about [player welfare] to UEFA, they say 'We take note.' But, after, more games. It's like an actor or actress in a theatre going three times a day: they'd like to put on a good performance, but three times a day is too much."

Guardiola was right to be concerned. His Manchester City side won the treble win 2023, but are toiling this season after being decimated by injuries to key men, including Rodri, who was already threatening a players' union strike over the schedule before being sidelined with an ACL tear.

There has been little sympathy for City, but it merely reinforced the point that players are playing too many games. If one of the most expensively assembled squads in football history can reach breaking point, what hope is there for clubs who are not sponsored by a state?

GettyMoney over meritocracy

City's struggles have highlighted the most glaring problem with the new Champions League format: it's far too forgiving.

Former Juventus president Andrea Agnelli pushed so hard for a Super League because he was disgusted by the fact that small, well-run provincial clubs such as Atalanta could earn a seat at Europe's top table at the expense of one of the traditional superpowers. The revenue accrued from regular participation in continental competition has been the biggest distortive force in the competitiveness of European football over the past decade, the reason why the gap between the haves and the have-nots is wider than ever before.

In an ideal, fair and just world, the Champions League would be the sole preserve of actual champions – just like the European Cup used to be. But that was never good enough for the likes of Silvio Berlusconi, who realised that the real money was to be made in regular games between the teams from the biggest TV markets in Europe.

So, Super League threats were made and UEFA replied by including the top four teams from the 'Big Five' leagues and adding group stages (there were two at one point).

However, those amendments still weren't enough to satisfy ESL backers Agnelli and Florentino Perez, who wanted a closed shop to protect their profits – and the 'Swiss Model' is a product of the prioritisation of money over meritocracy, which has been quite clearly implemented to protect the big boys.

GettyExtra safety net

In any other year, a team that has performed as poorly as City, who have been beaten by Sporting CP, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, and held at home by Inter and Feyenoord, would already be out. But because of the nature of the supposedly "brilliant" revamp, City still only need to beat Club Brugge at home to progress to the play-off round, which is, in itself, an extra safety net introduced to spare the elite from the financial repercussions of an early European exit.

It's all so blatant that it's barely believable that the same people that criticised the Super League are now championing the expanded Champions League – particularly when the argument that it's been more exciting doesn't stand up to scrutiny at all.

Shaun Tait appointed Afghanistan's bowling coach

His first assignment will be the bilateral ODIs against Pakistan next month followed by the T20 World Cup

Former Australia fast bowler Shaun Tait has been appointed Afghanistan’s bowling coach with immediate effect for a period of five months. He will be working alongside head coach Lance Klusener.Tait’s first assignment will be a three-match ODI series against Pakistan, set to be played between September 1 and 5 in Sri Lanka. That will be followed by the T20 World Cup in the UAE, for which Afghanistan are in Group 2 along with India, Pakistan, New Zealand and two qualifying teams. Afghanistan are also set to play a one-off Test in Australia, starting November 27 in Hobart.”There have been talks for a few months now about me possibly taking up the role,” Tait told ESPNcricinfo. “It eventuated because head coach Lance Klusener wanted someone else to oversee the bowling side specifically.”Afghanistan rely heavily on their spin troika of Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman to win them games in white-ball cricket. Tait said he wanted fast bowlers to play a bigger role as well.”Everyone talks about Afghanistan’s spinners, so one of the specifics of my role is to get people talking more about their fast bowlers. There is some improvement to be done and hopefully, I can add that side of things. With all the concentration on the spin, a couple of guys get picked to do the role at the death and they’re gonna need some guidance. That’s where I come in.”There are some exciting guys like Naveen-u-Haq, who has clearly shown that, certainly at the death with his change-up deliveries… He is obviously not gonna be the only Afghanistan fast bowler who can do it. If someone like Naveen is doing well in the CPL and over here in the UK in the Blast, that means there’s a future there for fast bowling. So I am looking forward to getting in there, working with guys like him, all the other fast bowlers, and including the spinners and learning more about the spin side.”Tait, who lives in London with his family now, won’t be moving to Kabul though but he “will be travelling wherever the team goes. And obviously the big one is the T20 World Cup and I am looking forward to being a big part of that.”Tait, 38, is a level-two certified coach from Cricket Australia and has worked as a bowling coach with Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League and Bangla Tigers in the Abu Dhabi T10 league.Tait , who was one of the quickest bowlers in the world, retired from all cricket in 2017. He played three Tests, 35 ODIs and 21 T20Is for Australia, picking up 95 wickets in all. In the 2007 ODI World Cup, which Australia won, Tait was the joint second-highest wicket-taker with 23 scalps.

Smriti Mandhana backs India spinners to bounce back

India Women’s T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been ruled out of the T20I series opener against South Africa on Saturday in Lucknow owing to an injury. In her absence, Smriti Mandhana will lead the side in what will be their first appearance in the format since the T20 World Cup final on March 8 last year.Kaur had suffered a hip-flexor injury in the fifth and final ODI against South Africa on Wednesday, having settled in to put together a half-century stand with Mithali Raj before retiring out in the 31st over just as India looked to launch. She didn’t take the field for the rest of the game.”She [Kaur] has been ruled out of tomorrow’s match and rest of the updates on her injury will be given by the medical team and the team management,” Mandhana said on the eve of the first T20I. “It will be better for them to speak about it rather than me.”Mandhana, 24, has led India in four T20Is, her maiden bow as captain having come in March 2019, where she filled in for an injured Kaur in the three-match T20I series against a visiting England side in Guwahati. India suffered a whitewash in that assignment, but in her next stint as captain, in November that year, she led the T20I side to a 61-run win against hosts West Indies.Mandhana also confirmed that India would be going in with the same opening combination they had in the T20 World Cup, with 17-year-old Shafali Verma, who couldn’t find a place in the ODI squad though she had topped the run-chart for India in the world tournament, partnering Mandhana.”As of now we both, together, have had good partnerships since last two years, so we are looking at the same combination,” Mandhana said.India’s 4-1 loss in the ODI series, which head coach WV Raman coach attributed in most part to a lack of “game time”, threw into sharp relief South Africa’s meticulous planning to flatten the hosts’ vaunted spin attack. The Indian spinners averaged 53.15 in the five matches combined, their worst in a women’s ODI series/tournament where they bowled 100 or more overs. Their bowling strike rate of 70.7 was also their worst in a series/tournament in the 50-over format.”[The] spinners have been our biggest strength for the longest time,” Mandhana said. “India have done well in the last couple of years all thanks to the spinners. I wouldn’t say they were bad; I felt they were a bit inconsistent in their bowling. They were very good in patches and there’s was the one odd ball which didn’t go our way, or didn’t go their way, so that’s the talk of being more consistent in pitching the ball in good areas because if you keep pitching the six balls in the same areas, it gets tough as a batter. In T20Is, with just four overs – 24 balls – I think it will be easier for the spinners to focus on the 24 balls rather than the 60 balls. I look at it that way.”Mandhana also said that the BCCI is in talks with its English counterpart about the participation of the Indian players in the Hundred, which begins on July 21, but stressed that a final decision would be contingent upon the schedule of the national team. ESPNcricinfo reported last month that four India players are on the radar of the Hundred teams and their involvement in the tournament could come about after India’s tour of England, likely starting June, which is set to include a one-off Test.”The ECB is in talks with the BCCI but we don’t have an update yet about it,” Mandhana said. “Let’s see, it will be highly depending on the schedule what the Indian team will be having because our first priority will definitely be the India matches, so I am sure the BCCI and ECB are working towards it and let’s hope to hear something around [the] 100-ball [tournament] from them soon.”India Women T20I squad: Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh, Harleen Deol, Sushma Verma (wicketkeeper), Nuzhat Parveen (wicketkeeper), Ayushi Soni, Arundhati Reddy, Radha Yadav, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Poonam Yadav, Mansi Joshi, Monica Patel, C. Dream 1st signing: Liverpool want "monster" who can finally replace Fabinho

Arne Slot will be hoping his first season as manager of Liverpool Football Club can do outgoing boss Jurgen Klopp justice, the legendary German bowing out at the end of last season after a stellar stint at Anfield.

His replacement, former Feyenoord boss Slot, will have a big task on his hands to live up to the legacy. Klopp’s tenure at the Reds saw him lift one each of the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup, as well as two League Cups, the Club World Cup and the UEFA Supercup.

Liverpool celebrate winning the Carabao Cup

Although the 19-time English Champions are yet to make a signing this summer, their new Dutchman at the helm will no doubt be dreaming of lifting the two major prizes next season; the Premier League and the Champions League. Whilst it will be a tough campaign, he has some players in his squad who are game-changers, including Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.

However, recently, they have been linked with another player who could come into the club and have an immediate impact on the side, shoring up the centre of the midfield for the Reds.

Liverpool target Eredivisie midfielder

The player in question here is PSV and Netherlands midfielder Joey Veerman. The 25-year-old has impressed for PSV in recent seasons, and could now be in line to get a major move away from the club this summer.

According to a report from CaughtOffside, Liverpool 'have their eye on' the defensive midfielder this summer, and could launch a bid as they look to add strength and depth at the base of their midfield, with Wataru Endo currently their only viable option there.

Joey Veerman

However, the Reds would not be the only club looking to sign Veerman this summer. The report explains that their arch-rivals, Manchester United are also interested in adding him to their squad. He explains that, given the Dutch core building at Old Trafford, it makes sense for the Red Devils to launch a bid as an alternative to doing a deal for Manuel Ugarte.

At this stage, a price for Veerman has not been named, as stated by Anfield Watch earlier this week. However, the 25-year-old is valued at £18.6m by Football Transfers, so could cost anything from that price and upwards.

Why Veerman would be a good signing

Last season, Veerman was one of the best players in the Eredivisie. Not only did he put in some impressive performances in midfield, but he contributed to lots of goals. The 25-year-old played 29 games in the Dutch top flight last term, grabbed five goals and registered a very impressive 16 assists along the way.

Should they bring Veerman into the club this summer, Liverpool might well have finally signed a replacement for long-term number six, Fabinho. The Brazilian played 291 times for the Reds and won both the Premier League and Champions League.

Whilst the pair are somewhat different, with Veerman working better in a double pivot and the Brazilian operating well as a lone number six, it is still a deal that would see them replace the Al-Ittihad man, who they sold 12 months ago for a rumoured £40m.

You can compare their Fbref stats to build a good picture of just how good Veerman is in contrast to Fabinho, whose stats from Liverpool’s title-winning season of 2019/20 will be used in the comparison.

Firstly, when it comes to defensive actions, Fabinho just about edges the Dutchman out. The former Real Madrid man averaged 4.16 tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes in 2019/20, compared to 3.32 for Veerman.

However, the Dutch midfielder’s average amount of ball recoveries made per game last season trumped Fabinho’s from the 2019/20 campaign. He averaged 7.21 compared to the former Brazil international’s 6.8 each game.

In terms of on the ball, Veerman’s quality is shown through when looking at his stats. He averages 11.8 progressive passes per 90, compared to just 5.58 by Fabinho each game in 2019/20. Veerman also plays far more key passes per 90, too, with 4.91 compared to just 0.82 for Fabinho in 2019/20.

Here, context must be used, because Liverpool’s more direct style of play under Klopp may well mean that he had less opportunity to make those progressive passes as they got the ball forward quicker.

It seems clear that, in bringing Veerman in, they would be adding a “monster” midfielder with great quality on the ball into their squad, as football analyst Ben Mattinson called him.

Whilst he would need to play in a double pivot to be most effective, with the likes of Endo or Alexis Mac Allister, the Dutchman could be an excellent first addition to Slot’s squad this summer and the man to finally fill Fabinho's void.

The interest is raining down on this tough-tackling up-and-comer.
