Smriti Mandhana backs India spinners to bounce back

India Women’s T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been ruled out of the T20I series opener against South Africa on Saturday in Lucknow owing to an injury. In her absence, Smriti Mandhana will lead the side in what will be their first appearance in the format since the T20 World Cup final on March 8 last year.Kaur had suffered a hip-flexor injury in the fifth and final ODI against South Africa on Wednesday, having settled in to put together a half-century stand with Mithali Raj before retiring out in the 31st over just as India looked to launch. She didn’t take the field for the rest of the game.”She [Kaur] has been ruled out of tomorrow’s match and rest of the updates on her injury will be given by the medical team and the team management,” Mandhana said on the eve of the first T20I. “It will be better for them to speak about it rather than me.”Mandhana, 24, has led India in four T20Is, her maiden bow as captain having come in March 2019, where she filled in for an injured Kaur in the three-match T20I series against a visiting England side in Guwahati. India suffered a whitewash in that assignment, but in her next stint as captain, in November that year, she led the T20I side to a 61-run win against hosts West Indies.Mandhana also confirmed that India would be going in with the same opening combination they had in the T20 World Cup, with 17-year-old Shafali Verma, who couldn’t find a place in the ODI squad though she had topped the run-chart for India in the world tournament, partnering Mandhana.”As of now we both, together, have had good partnerships since last two years, so we are looking at the same combination,” Mandhana said.India’s 4-1 loss in the ODI series, which head coach WV Raman coach attributed in most part to a lack of “game time”, threw into sharp relief South Africa’s meticulous planning to flatten the hosts’ vaunted spin attack. The Indian spinners averaged 53.15 in the five matches combined, their worst in a women’s ODI series/tournament where they bowled 100 or more overs. Their bowling strike rate of 70.7 was also their worst in a series/tournament in the 50-over format.”[The] spinners have been our biggest strength for the longest time,” Mandhana said. “India have done well in the last couple of years all thanks to the spinners. I wouldn’t say they were bad; I felt they were a bit inconsistent in their bowling. They were very good in patches and there’s was the one odd ball which didn’t go our way, or didn’t go their way, so that’s the talk of being more consistent in pitching the ball in good areas because if you keep pitching the six balls in the same areas, it gets tough as a batter. In T20Is, with just four overs – 24 balls – I think it will be easier for the spinners to focus on the 24 balls rather than the 60 balls. I look at it that way.”Mandhana also said that the BCCI is in talks with its English counterpart about the participation of the Indian players in the Hundred, which begins on July 21, but stressed that a final decision would be contingent upon the schedule of the national team. ESPNcricinfo reported last month that four India players are on the radar of the Hundred teams and their involvement in the tournament could come about after India’s tour of England, likely starting June, which is set to include a one-off Test.”The ECB is in talks with the BCCI but we don’t have an update yet about it,” Mandhana said. “Let’s see, it will be highly depending on the schedule what the Indian team will be having because our first priority will definitely be the India matches, so I am sure the BCCI and ECB are working towards it and let’s hope to hear something around [the] 100-ball [tournament] from them soon.”India Women T20I squad: Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh, Harleen Deol, Sushma Verma (wicketkeeper), Nuzhat Parveen (wicketkeeper), Ayushi Soni, Arundhati Reddy, Radha Yadav, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Poonam Yadav, Mansi Joshi, Monica Patel, C. Dream 1st signing: Liverpool want "monster" who can finally replace Fabinho

Arne Slot will be hoping his first season as manager of Liverpool Football Club can do outgoing boss Jurgen Klopp justice, the legendary German bowing out at the end of last season after a stellar stint at Anfield.

His replacement, former Feyenoord boss Slot, will have a big task on his hands to live up to the legacy. Klopp’s tenure at the Reds saw him lift one each of the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup, as well as two League Cups, the Club World Cup and the UEFA Supercup.

Liverpool celebrate winning the Carabao Cup

Although the 19-time English Champions are yet to make a signing this summer, their new Dutchman at the helm will no doubt be dreaming of lifting the two major prizes next season; the Premier League and the Champions League. Whilst it will be a tough campaign, he has some players in his squad who are game-changers, including Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.

However, recently, they have been linked with another player who could come into the club and have an immediate impact on the side, shoring up the centre of the midfield for the Reds.

Liverpool target Eredivisie midfielder

The player in question here is PSV and Netherlands midfielder Joey Veerman. The 25-year-old has impressed for PSV in recent seasons, and could now be in line to get a major move away from the club this summer.

According to a report from CaughtOffside, Liverpool 'have their eye on' the defensive midfielder this summer, and could launch a bid as they look to add strength and depth at the base of their midfield, with Wataru Endo currently their only viable option there.

Joey Veerman

However, the Reds would not be the only club looking to sign Veerman this summer. The report explains that their arch-rivals, Manchester United are also interested in adding him to their squad. He explains that, given the Dutch core building at Old Trafford, it makes sense for the Red Devils to launch a bid as an alternative to doing a deal for Manuel Ugarte.

At this stage, a price for Veerman has not been named, as stated by Anfield Watch earlier this week. However, the 25-year-old is valued at £18.6m by Football Transfers, so could cost anything from that price and upwards.

Why Veerman would be a good signing

Last season, Veerman was one of the best players in the Eredivisie. Not only did he put in some impressive performances in midfield, but he contributed to lots of goals. The 25-year-old played 29 games in the Dutch top flight last term, grabbed five goals and registered a very impressive 16 assists along the way.

Should they bring Veerman into the club this summer, Liverpool might well have finally signed a replacement for long-term number six, Fabinho. The Brazilian played 291 times for the Reds and won both the Premier League and Champions League.

Whilst the pair are somewhat different, with Veerman working better in a double pivot and the Brazilian operating well as a lone number six, it is still a deal that would see them replace the Al-Ittihad man, who they sold 12 months ago for a rumoured £40m.

bruno-guimaraes-fabinho-liverpool-opinion

You can compare their Fbref stats to build a good picture of just how good Veerman is in contrast to Fabinho, whose stats from Liverpool’s title-winning season of 2019/20 will be used in the comparison.

Firstly, when it comes to defensive actions, Fabinho just about edges the Dutchman out. The former Real Madrid man averaged 4.16 tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes in 2019/20, compared to 3.32 for Veerman.

However, the Dutch midfielder’s average amount of ball recoveries made per game last season trumped Fabinho’s from the 2019/20 campaign. He averaged 7.21 compared to the former Brazil international’s 6.8 each game.

In terms of on the ball, Veerman’s quality is shown through when looking at his stats. He averages 11.8 progressive passes per 90, compared to just 5.58 by Fabinho each game in 2019/20. Veerman also plays far more key passes per 90, too, with 4.91 compared to just 0.82 for Fabinho in 2019/20.

Here, context must be used, because Liverpool’s more direct style of play under Klopp may well mean that he had less opportunity to make those progressive passes as they got the ball forward quicker.

It seems clear that, in bringing Veerman in, they would be adding a “monster” midfielder with great quality on the ball into their squad, as football analyst Ben Mattinson called him.

Whilst he would need to play in a double pivot to be most effective, with the likes of Endo or Alexis Mac Allister, the Dutchman could be an excellent first addition to Slot’s squad this summer and the man to finally fill Fabinho's void.

Spurs looking to sign incredible £20m "wonderkid" in Archie Gray repeat

It's been over three weeks since the transfer window opened, and after a slow start, Tottenham Hotspur have finally started making moves in the market.

They have been linked to a long list of talented players from Eberechi Eze to Santiago Gimenez, but made their first permanent signing last week as they splashed £30m on Leeds United's incredibly exciting wonderkid Archie Gray.

However, Daniel Levy and Co are seemingly just getting started.

The latest player touted for a move to N17 is another up-and-coming youngster who could be seen in the same way as Gray in time.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from journalist Alan Nixon via GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham are one of several clubs interested in Sunderland's Jobe Bellingham.

Alongside the Lilywhites, Nixon claims that Southampton, Crystal Palace and Brentford are keen to bring the younger brother of England star Jude Bellingham to the Premier League this summer, but it is the latter two clubs who pose the biggest threat to Spurs.

The good news for the North Londoners is that as long as they can agree personal terms with the 18-year-old, they shouldn't have too much trouble sorting out a deal, as the Black Cats would be willing to sell for an offer in excess of £20m. However, recent updates suggest that his preference may be to stay in the Northeast for another season.

Paying £20m might sound somewhat outlandish for a player his age, but based on how well he performed last season and how he is spoken about, it would be an investment into what he could become – similar to Gray.

Why Bellingham could be another Gray

Like Gray, last season was Bellingham's first full campaign of senior football – he only played half of 22/23 – and like the Peacocks star, he looked right at home, even if he was moved all over the pitch.

In 47 appearances for the Black Cats, the Stourbridge-born gem scored seven goals, provided one assist and started in five different positions, from centre-forward to defensive midfield.

In contrast, the former Leeds ace made 52 appearances for the Whites, provided two assists and started in four different positions, from right-back to attacking midfield.

Moreover, the Sunderland prospect is spoken about similarly to the Durham-born star, with U23 scout Antonio Mango describing him as a "wonderkid", former professional Niall Quinn dubbing him "incredible", and former manager Tony Mowbray describing the youngster as an "absolute diamond."

When you examine his underlying numbers, it's easy to see why he has impressed so many people in his short time at the Stadium of Light.

According to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across the next best 14 competitions, the 6 foot 3 dynamo ranks in the top 5% of midfielders for non-penalty expected goals, the top 11% for actual non-penalty goals and touches in the opposition's penalty area, the top 12% for progressive passes received and the top 14% for non-penalty expected goals and expected assists, all per 90.

Ultimately, there is always going to be an element of risk when spending a considerable sum of money on a player so young, but as in the case of Gray, Bellingham looks to be the real deal. While it may take him time to adjust to Premier League football, he could have a very bright future at Spurs – if they can secure his services, that is.

Exceptional Luiz replacement: Premier League ace wants to join Aston Villa

Aston Villa have yet to make their first signing of the summer, but could that change in the next week or two?

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

Ross Barkley looks set to arrive but Unai Emery is also eyeing up a reunion with one of his former players after a frustrating season in which they didn't play many minutes.

Aston Villa transfer news

According to Super Deporte (via Sport Witness), Villa are keen on making a move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso this summer in a bid to improve the squad.

Emery managed the Argentinian talent during spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Villarreal, so he clearly knows how to get the best out of a player who hasn’t quite lived up to his vast potential at Spurs.

The report states that Lo Celso is ‘willing to join’ Villa in a bid to secure regular first-team football as he looks to join the project Emery has going in the Midlands.

With a year left on his contract, this could be the perfect time for Emery to make a concrete move for the player, especially as Douglas Luiz could be on his way out of Villa Park.

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 6, 2024 How Lo Celso could replace Luiz at Aston Villa

Luiz is attracting attention from Arsenal and the Gunners will need to stump up a fee of around £50m if they wish to sign him this summer, according to the Mirror.

While it looks as though the Brazilian will depart the Midlands sooner rather than later, might Lo Celso fill the gap left by Luiz?

The former Manchester City gem registered 20 goal contributions last term – ten goals and ten assists – which could be difficult to replace in the midfield area.

Lo Celso is not exactly known for his goalscoring abilities. The last time he scored more than four goals in a single season was during the 2018/19 campaign for Real Betis.

Spurs player Giovani Lo Celso

That said, he could offer other qualities as evidenced by FBref. Indeed, when compared to his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues, the 28-year-old currently ranks in the top 1% for progressive passes (12.09), progressive carries (4.45) and assists (0.36) per 90.

Also sitting in the top 3% for shot-creating actions (4.98) per 90 and the top 4% for touches in the attacking penalty area (3.38) per 90, it showcases how dangerous he can be when moving the ball forward into the final third and creating chances for others.

With Luiz only ranking in the top 42% for progressive passes and the best 30% for progressive carries, clearly an upgrade in some areas could be sourced here.

French commentator Raph Chader previously hailed the Spurs dynamo as “exceptional” and if given a starting berth under Emery, there is no doubt he could shine.

During his career, the 5 foot 9 gem has played the most games for Emery, scoring eight goals and grabbing 12 assists across 88 matches during spells in Spain and France, which shows how well he likes to perform under the Spaniard.

The former Betis maestro hasn’t enjoyed much success in London since arriving in the Premier League back in 2019, but perhaps a fresh start at Villa could help him to showcase his true abilities.

Emery could well be looking for a Luiz replacement soon and Lo Celso fits the bill nicely.

Chelsea eyeing "outstanding" Tuchel alternative who’s unbeaten v Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino’s time at Chelsea is up, not even a year after moving to Stamford Bridge.

Whether that’ll prove to be the right decision in the long run is unknown, with fans and players both in shock at his departure.

For many, the Blues’ five-game winning streak at the end of the season was enough to stick by the Argentine for the upcoming campaign, but Todd Boehly has other plans.

Now that the dugout is vacant, let’s take a look at a potential successor who’s caused Chelsea plenty of headaches in the past.

Chelsea’s search for a new manager

According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, Thomas Frank is on the list of potential replacements for Pochettino.

The Danish boss has been discussed internally at the club as they look for a “dynamic manager.”

Other reports state that Frank is admired for his entire package, in terms of his relationships with the media and his players.

The 50-year-old is a strong candidate for the job, unlike Thomas Tuchel, whose return has been all but ruled out, but what would a Frank Chelsea side look like?

Frank’s Chelsea side compared to Pochettino’s

Throughout the campaign, Pochettino had attempted to install his philosophy within the squad, which prioritises an attacking approach.

This can be highlighted by the Blues scoring 77 goals and creating 3.2 big chances per game this season, which happens to be even more than Arsenal’s three big chances on average.

The other guarantee with a Pochettino side is that they’ll look to dominate possession, as shown by their 58.9% this campaign (fifth best in the division) and 505 accurate team passes per game.

On the other hand, Frank has a simply different style of play, which takes a slightly more reserved approach to attack, instead focusing on defensive security.

As you can see, given that they are the underdog in most games, unlike Chelsea, Brentford are a side that operates more without the ball while ensuring that the basics are mastered.

What makes Frank slightly different from the Argentine is that he’s more willing to be tactically flexible, whether that be via in-game instruction or pre-match formation.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank

Pochettino always favours a standard 4-2-3-1 system, while the Dane has alternated between a 4-3-3 and a 3-4-3 variant, which has seen him go unbeaten in the last five games against the Blues and versus Pochettino.

Given the Chelsea squad, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him utilise the three-back formation if he were to join, with Reece James and Ben Chilwell proving to be a deadly wing-back combo under the aforementioned Tuchel, with 18 goal contributions between them in the 2021/22 league campaign.

So, with the former Blues boss unlikely to head back to London, Frank would be a fine alternative for the decision-makers at Chelsea.

Promisingly, the Dane is also known for getting the best out of each individual on his team, hence why he’s earned promotion and stayed in the top flight on a far-from-large budget, and Boehly will hope that he can help develop talent into superstars.

Ivan Toney is a prime example of the kind of impact Frank can have on an individual, as he scored 20 Premier League goals last season, and there's the potential that he could develop Nicolas Jackson into a 20-goal a-season striker, especially if he's being supplied by Cole Palmer.

Overall, hiring Frank is a risk, and it gives a slight similarity to the appointment of Graham Potter, but there’s no doubt he’s an “outstanding” coach, as dubbed by pundit Troy Deeney, who could help rebuild the club.

Chelsea plan talks with new 44 y/o attacking manager alongside Maresca

Chelsea are reportedly planning talks with yet another manager after sacking Mauricio Pochettino, it has emerged, with Todd Boehly eyeing up a potential move.

Chelsea working through manager shortlist

It has been quite the week for Chelsea fans. After ending the Premier League season with a fifth straight win against Bournemouth, Mauricio Pochettino parted ways with the club by alleged mutual consent following an end-of-season review, before Manchester United shocked the footballing world to lift the FA Cup against heavy favourites Manchester City.

The result bumped Chelsea down from Europa League football to a pair of August fixtures to qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League, Europe's third-tier competition won by West Ham in 2023 and set to be contested by Fiorentina and Olympiacos this time around.

All the while, speculation has been flying as to who may arrive in the Chelsea hot seat come the new season, with the Boehly-led ownership now looking for their fourth permanent manager in their two-year stint in charge of the club.

The likes of Kieran McKenna, Jose Mourinho, Thomas Tuchel, Thomas Frank and Roberto De Zerbi have all been considered and discarded, while Leicester City's Enzo Maresca has also held positive talks over the weekend and is now close to a Stamford Bridge move. However, a new candidate has emerged, and it could be the most bizarre one yet.

Chelsea keen on Xavi

That comes courtesy of a report from Portugal, which claims that the Blues will hold talks with former Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez to "evaluate the possibility" of him becoming the new man in the dugout at Stamford Bridge.

It had been expected that Xavi would remain Barcelona boss after finally making a U-turn in his decision to leave the club, a stance he had initially outlined midway through the season.

However, in a shock twist, the club then decided to sack the Spanish coach, and are on the verge of appointing Hansi Flick to the vacant Camp Nou role in place of the 44-year-old.

Xavi, who has a reputation for being an attacking coach, would certainly fit the criteria for the new Chelsea boss, with the Blues owners "determined to snare the next big thing in coaching and help steer that eventual manager to the top", something that they deemed Pochettino unfit for.

But it seems an altogether unlikely move given the Spaniard's recent difficulties with the Barcelona board, for which he ultimately paid with his job. The Blues may be on the hunt for a more calm presence in the Chelsea dugout who is happy to work in the head coach rather than manager role, with Maresca seemingly the favourite to take charge as it stands.

Brighton set to exploit FFP woes with move for "outstanding" £20k-p/w star

Brighton are looking to bolster their ranks on the cheap this summer, and are ready to exploit another English side's problems with Financial Fair Play to do so.

Uncertainty surrounds Brighton

Struggling in the Premier League by their own lofty standards this season, the Seagulls nonetheless head into the summer with plenty of uncertainty around the AMEX. Chiefly, that speculation surrounds manager Roberto De Zerbi, who has been linked with a move away almost since he arrived at the club.

Previously linked with vacancies at both Liverpool and Barcelona, Xavi's decision to stay coupled with Liverpool's move for Arne Slot appears to have put pay to that.

“Influential” manager now the “preferred” Pochettino replacement at Chelsea

He certainly knows how to transform a side…

Apr 21, 2024

However, other clubs are still lurking, and the likes of Juventus, Manchester United and Chelsea could all be on the hunt for a new manager before the new season begins. On the pitch, the Seagulls are braced for interest in striker Evan Ferguson, but it has very much been a season of rebuilding after losing all of Alexis Mac Allister, Moises Caicedo and Leandro Trossard in the last 18 months.

That has reflected in their performances, with De Zerbi's side comfortably beaten by Manchester City on Wednesday night and having won just one of their last five Premier League games, leaving them 11th in the table and six points outside a spot for next season's European competitions.

The likes of Carlos Baleba, Simon Adingra and Julio Enciso are all very much stars for the future, but they are yet to be able to perform consistently for the Seagulls, while Brighton's season has been hampered by injuries to Kaoru Mitoma, Solly March and Jack Hinshelwood.

Now, they look set to try and bolster their ranks with some much-needed additions.

Brighton looking to Leicester FFP woes

That is according to Football Insider, who report that the ever-savvy Tony Bloom is keeping a close eye on Leicester City with a view to a potential move for midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. The Englishman has been in excellent form this season, and has long been a star in the making. Even after his debut for the Foxes, Brendan Rodgers hailed him as "outstanding", and he has not looked back since.

"I thought Kiernan was outstanding," said Rodgers back in 2021. "He wanted to prove a point, he was aggressive and he took on the burden of the game. "He knows the position that we want him to play. He has good energy and good athleticism.

"I've said about him improving on the ball, but he can give us that bite in midfield and he was a catalyst for the second half."

Now spearheading Leicester's attempted return to the Premier League, Dewsbury-Hall has attracted no shortage of interest in his services, while Leicester City themselves need to sell to comply with FFP.

Selling a homegrown talent would be the easiest way to balance the books, and the report claims that Brighton are "planning to submit a new bid" after seeing an effort to sign him in January turned down.

Leicester midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

The Foxes demanded around £30m to let him leave in the winter, which Brighton were unwilling to match, but despite having three years left to run on his contract the midfielder may be available for less this summer as Maresca's side battle to avoid a points deduction.

On just £20,000 per week at the King Power Stadium, he could prove to be a low-cost addition with plenty of upside for the Seagulls should they find a way to get a deal over the line.

Media rip into Rangers "disgrace" who completed just 16 passes v Celtic

Their 2-1 victory in the latest Old Firm derby has left them on the verge of success though. While not yet mathematically confirmed as Champions, they lead Rangers by six points with two games left to go, while they also boost a seven superior goal difference than their title rivals, meaning that they would need to lose both of their final games and see Rangers win heavily to stand a chance of reversing the top two in the division.

It will see Brendan Rodgers complete a title win that at times this season has looked unlikely, but a poor spell of form from Rangers has effectively handed the trophy on a plate to their rivals, and this game continued on that theme.

A fiesty encounter, the game turned on one moment, and Rangers fans and pundits wasted no time making sure they made their feelings known.

Lundstram branded a "disgrace" vs Celtic

Rangers podcasters and media members have taken to Twitter/X in their droves to aim their ire at midfielder John Lundstram, who endured a torrid afternoon at Celtic Park. The ex-Sheffield United midfielder put the ball into his own net seven minutes before half-time to see his side fall 2-0 down to their Glasgow rivals, though an effort from Cyriel Dessers pulled them back into proceedings.

But that chance disappeared on the stroke of half time courtesy of Lundstram, who was given his marching orders in first-half stoppage time for a poor challenge on Celtic's Alistair Johnston, which VAR correctly deemed a red card challenge.

It capped an awful game for Lundstram, who managed just 16 passes in midfield, lost possession seven times and won just three of his 10 duels. Rangers podcast Heart and Hand labelled him an "absolute disgrace", while he was branded "absolutely woeful" by 4 Lads Had a Dream

The midfielder is out of contract this summer, and Philippe Clement admitted last week that the chances of him penning a new deal are increasingly slim.

“There is nothing official around that. I am not naïve, the longer that things last the more possibility that other people step in. But for the moment apparently the water is too deep between the two sides," he explained.

Having picked up a straight red card, he will now be suspended for the remainder of Rangers' games this campaign, which means he could well have played his last game for the Ibrox outfit. Based on the reaction to his performance today, there will be few Rangers fans complaining.

Morgan looks forward to working with McCullum, Karthik at Kolkata Knight Riders

Eoin Morgan has been making “the best out of a bad situation”, enforced by the coronavirus pandemic, spending time with his three-week-old baby. Had things been normal, Morgan would not have been at home, he would have been part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad in the IPL.Reflecting on a remarkable year for him as England’s white-ball captain, Morgan said that the 2019 World Cup final had lifted the profile of cricket in England in unprecedented fashion.”I think the journey that we went on is probably the most exciting. In 2015, the embarrassing nature in which we were bundled out of that World Cup and the journey we embarked on to try and change the brand of cricket that we played with a new group of extremely talented players over the course of four years – it’s brilliant,” Morgan told .

Morgan on the reverse-sweep and his playing role:

“The more experience that I’ve got, I find myself batting in that middle order and hopefully being there at the end. It’s probably one of the better skills that I do have and probably over the last two years, it’s been at its best.
“I started playing reverse-sweep when I first came to London as a 16-year old and signed up at Middlesex. Playing at Lord’s, the boundaries were very short square of the wicket and they are really long straight. When I played in the first team as a 17-18 year old, trying to clear the long straight boundary at Lord’s was very difficult for me. So I started playing a lot more sweeps just because they were more effective at our home ground. I sort of drilled the reverse-sweep and swept for as long as I could. The reverse-sweep has been one of my favourite shots because it’s been so effective over the years.”

“It sort of culminated in last year’s World Cup. The final was the most dramatic game of cricket and the best game of cricket that probably has ever been played which contributes to the hype of it. But I think one of the great things about it was on the day of that great game of cricket was, it’s always now associated with the longest ever Wimbledon final that was epic as well. It helped us in growing cricket outside of the normal bubble that we’re already in to a different audience, and for us at home it has lifted the profile of the game like we’ve never seen.”Straight after the World cup win was the Ashes series which was absolutely amazing to watch. Australia thoroughly deserved to win it [the series was drawn with Australia retaining the urn] but again, the dramatic nature in which the whole series unfolded really did attract the whole country and sort of galvanised one of our biggest rivalries in sport. It was fascinating to watch and I thought it was a great year for us, cricket-wise.”Morgan was also looking forward to a second stint with Knight Riders, having played for the franchise from 2011 to 2013. He will reunite with good friend Brendon McCullum, the two having first built a friendship when they were team-mates at Knight Riders. McCullum is now the head coach of the franchise.”I think his contribution not only to New Zealand cricket but to world cricket really took the front in 2015 with their campaign – throughout the 2015 World Cup,” Morgan said. “They really did, I suppose, transform the fate of a nation and the hope of a nation in the way that they played. They played aggressive, positive cricket but also in a way that wasn’t in your face the whole time. It was really good to watch, it created a huge amount of attraction and I think majority of the time actually the way that they play and the manner that they play overlooks the skill level that they produce.”And I think Baz is the reason for that turnaround. I think he has had a huge input in the way they’ve played and in all formats as well not just white ball. I suppose it makes that move to KKR all the more sweet when he’s head coach. I think if we see any similarities in the impact that he’s had as a player and as a captain on his coaching, the impact will be monumental. I really do think he’s changed the landscape of cricket and the attitude of the way people play.”Morgan was also looking forward to learning from Dinesh Karthik, the Knight Riders captain.”While I’m here to help, I also want to learn as much as I can from him. There are a lot of dynamics about being a captain when you’re playing in India that I don’t know about, I’ll be picking his brain the whole time,” Morgan said. “I’ll naturally be myself and try to give as much as I can just like the rest of the international players. But it’s going to be fascinating to see how and when we get to play and how the competition lines up. Because everybody is going to come out of isolation extremely excited, rearing to go, batting, bowling, fielding the whole lot.”
