Media rip into Rangers "disgrace" who completed just 16 passes v Celtic

Rangers fans and media members have wasted no time in laying into one of their stars after their chance of winning the Scottish Premiership title took perhaps its final blow on Saturday afternoon.

Celtic on the verge of the title

Heading into their clash with Rangers on Saturday, Celtic knew that should they avoid defeat they would have one hand on the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers chiefs now believe £25k-a-week star will be at Ibrox next season

Huge news for the Gers.

Their 2-1 victory in the latest Old Firm derby has left them on the verge of success though. While not yet mathematically confirmed as Champions, they lead Rangers by six points with two games left to go, while they also boost a seven superior goal difference than their title rivals, meaning that they would need to lose both of their final games and see Rangers win heavily to stand a chance of reversing the top two in the division.

It will see Brendan Rodgers complete a title win that at times this season has looked unlikely, but a poor spell of form from Rangers has effectively handed the trophy on a plate to their rivals, and this game continued on that theme.

A fiesty encounter, the game turned on one moment, and Rangers fans and pundits wasted no time making sure they made their feelings known.

Lundstram branded a "disgrace" vs Celtic

Rangers podcasters and media members have taken to Twitter/X in their droves to aim their ire at midfielder John Lundstram, who endured a torrid afternoon at Celtic Park. The ex-Sheffield United midfielder put the ball into his own net seven minutes before half-time to see his side fall 2-0 down to their Glasgow rivals, though an effort from Cyriel Dessers pulled them back into proceedings.

But that chance disappeared on the stroke of half time courtesy of Lundstram, who was given his marching orders in first-half stoppage time for a poor challenge on Celtic's Alistair Johnston, which VAR correctly deemed a red card challenge.

It capped an awful game for Lundstram, who managed just 16 passes in midfield, lost possession seven times and won just three of his 10 duels. Rangers podcast Heart and Hand labelled him an "absolute disgrace", while he was branded "absolutely woeful" by 4 Lads Had a Dream

The midfielder is out of contract this summer, and Philippe Clement admitted last week that the chances of him penning a new deal are increasingly slim.

“There is nothing official around that. I am not naïve, the longer that things last the more possibility that other people step in. But for the moment apparently the water is too deep between the two sides," he explained.

Having picked up a straight red card, he will now be suspended for the remainder of Rangers' games this campaign, which means he could well have played his last game for the Ibrox outfit. Based on the reaction to his performance today, there will be few Rangers fans complaining.

Morgan looks forward to working with McCullum, Karthik at Kolkata Knight Riders

Eoin Morgan has been making “the best out of a bad situation”, enforced by the coronavirus pandemic, spending time with his three-week-old baby. Had things been normal, Morgan would not have been at home, he would have been part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad in the IPL.Reflecting on a remarkable year for him as England’s white-ball captain, Morgan said that the 2019 World Cup final had lifted the profile of cricket in England in unprecedented fashion.”I think the journey that we went on is probably the most exciting. In 2015, the embarrassing nature in which we were bundled out of that World Cup and the journey we embarked on to try and change the brand of cricket that we played with a new group of extremely talented players over the course of four years – it’s brilliant,” Morgan told .

Morgan on the reverse-sweep and his playing role:

“The more experience that I’ve got, I find myself batting in that middle order and hopefully being there at the end. It’s probably one of the better skills that I do have and probably over the last two years, it’s been at its best.
“I started playing reverse-sweep when I first came to London as a 16-year old and signed up at Middlesex. Playing at Lord’s, the boundaries were very short square of the wicket and they are really long straight. When I played in the first team as a 17-18 year old, trying to clear the long straight boundary at Lord’s was very difficult for me. So I started playing a lot more sweeps just because they were more effective at our home ground. I sort of drilled the reverse-sweep and swept for as long as I could. The reverse-sweep has been one of my favourite shots because it’s been so effective over the years.”

“It sort of culminated in last year’s World Cup. The final was the most dramatic game of cricket and the best game of cricket that probably has ever been played which contributes to the hype of it. But I think one of the great things about it was on the day of that great game of cricket was, it’s always now associated with the longest ever Wimbledon final that was epic as well. It helped us in growing cricket outside of the normal bubble that we’re already in to a different audience, and for us at home it has lifted the profile of the game like we’ve never seen.”Straight after the World cup win was the Ashes series which was absolutely amazing to watch. Australia thoroughly deserved to win it [the series was drawn with Australia retaining the urn] but again, the dramatic nature in which the whole series unfolded really did attract the whole country and sort of galvanised one of our biggest rivalries in sport. It was fascinating to watch and I thought it was a great year for us, cricket-wise.”Morgan was also looking forward to a second stint with Knight Riders, having played for the franchise from 2011 to 2013. He will reunite with good friend Brendon McCullum, the two having first built a friendship when they were team-mates at Knight Riders. McCullum is now the head coach of the franchise.”I think his contribution not only to New Zealand cricket but to world cricket really took the front in 2015 with their campaign – throughout the 2015 World Cup,” Morgan said. “They really did, I suppose, transform the fate of a nation and the hope of a nation in the way that they played. They played aggressive, positive cricket but also in a way that wasn’t in your face the whole time. It was really good to watch, it created a huge amount of attraction and I think majority of the time actually the way that they play and the manner that they play overlooks the skill level that they produce.”And I think Baz is the reason for that turnaround. I think he has had a huge input in the way they’ve played and in all formats as well not just white ball. I suppose it makes that move to KKR all the more sweet when he’s head coach. I think if we see any similarities in the impact that he’s had as a player and as a captain on his coaching, the impact will be monumental. I really do think he’s changed the landscape of cricket and the attitude of the way people play.”Morgan was also looking forward to learning from Dinesh Karthik, the Knight Riders captain.”While I’m here to help, I also want to learn as much as I can from him. There are a lot of dynamics about being a captain when you’re playing in India that I don’t know about, I’ll be picking his brain the whole time,” Morgan said. “I’ll naturally be myself and try to give as much as I can just like the rest of the international players. But it’s going to be fascinating to see how and when we get to play and how the competition lines up. Because everybody is going to come out of isolation extremely excited, rearing to go, batting, bowling, fielding the whole lot.”

Liverpool have been rinsed of £63m by a flop who earns more than Diaz

If Liverpool have proved one thing this season, it's that their bouncebackability is second to none, having recovered countless results from losing positions and weathered harsh storms to win the Carabao Cup and sit behind Premier League table-toppers Arsenal only behind goal difference after 31 matches.

Sure, losing 3-0 at home to Atalanta – who are sixth-placed in Serie A and with the seventh-best away record in the division – in the Europa League quarter-finals first leg is hardly great, as it presents a mountainous task in Italy next week, but stranger things have happened under Jurgen Klopp's wing.

What is irrefutable however is that Liverpool have been out of sorts recently, saved by individual moments of brilliance and last-gasp winners throughout recent matches and failing to muster up the sustained fluency and fizz that is needed to compete across multiple fronts at this crucial late stage.

Two recent trips to Old Trafford have resulted in an FA Cup exit and a concession of top spot in the English top-flight; in both games, the Redmen should have won, but in both games, they didn't.

Alexis Mac Allister has been the obvious constant throughout this period but he's not the only one to have lifted his team, with Luis Diaz hitting a rich vein of form and maintaining it throughout 2024.

Luis Diaz's season in numbers

Liverpool suffered a startling nosedive last season but blame can hardly be attributed to Diaz, who spent the lion's share on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury in October 2022, aggravating this issue when closing on a comeback in December.

The Colombian struggled to revive his erstwhile level of performance in the final stretch of the 2022/23 campaign and was criticised for his "awful" displays by journalist Tom Little as Liverpool closed out a forgettable season.

Luis Diaz.

And despite scoring in Liverpool's opening two Premier League fixtures of the current campaign, Diaz was unable to lift himself back to the brilliance that followed his initial £37m transfer from Porto in January 2022, posting a solitary strike across his subsequent 18 league games.

That's all changed now, with the fleet-footed winger restoring his finest form to play an essential role in Liverpool's conquest for success over the past few months, hitting nine goal contributions from his past 13 Premier League appearances.

The Athletic's James Pearce has even noted that the 27-year-old has been "Liverpool's biggest attacking threat" during the club's injury-ravaged period a number of weeks ago.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 11% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 12% for shot-creating actions, the top 5% for pass completion and the top 6% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90.

He's a real force, a bundle of electricity, and averages 1.5 key passes, 1.7 dribbles, 3.5 ball recoveries and 4.5 successful duels per game in the Premier League this season, as per Sofascore, to underline this point.

He's certainly one of Liverpool's most influential players, but does his salary reflect that?

Luis Diaz's salary at Liverpool

Diaz arrived on Merseyside as a talented but relatively unknown commodity, though he had risen to the fore quite spectacularly in Portugal and was of concrete interest to Tottenham Hotspur before the Reds swooped in.

The transfer fee paid for his services was not extortionate but marked a sizeable outlay with a further £12m in add-ons. It is unclear how many clauses have been met in the time since his arrival.

Liverpool winger Luis Diaz

However, one of the finest financial measures of the club's success was tying the wily winger down to a weekly salary of just £55k per week, taking him below the likes of Adrian (£60k per week) and Kostas Tsimikas (£75k per week) on the overall salary bracket.

In a different measure of Liverpool's salary success, however, Diaz is earning well over 3x less than Thiago Alcantara, who has played just five minutes of competitive football this season.

Thiago Alcantara's season in numbers

Liverpool signed Thiago, an eminent and decorated centre-midfielder, from Bayern Munich in a package rising to £25m back in 2020, with his elite range of passing and immense technical qualities enticing Klopp into launching the bid.

And while, when fit, the Spain international has been a wonderful presence in Klopp's squad, his availability has been few and far between, actually failing to start over 20 Premier League games in any single season.

And after sustaining an injury back in April 2023 Thiago has been scarcely seen, with his one appearance this term – a five-minute cameo during defeat against Arsenal in February – aggravating this unending bout of ill fortune and leaving him racing for another showing before his contract expires in June.

As a result of this, the newly-turned 33-year-old boasts a market value of just £4m – according to Football Transfers – to emphasise his bitter decline.

Furthermore, he is indeed one of Liverpool's highest earners, and for all his talent, the culmination of his contract at Anfield cannot come soon enough in this regard.

Thiago Alcantara's salary at Liverpool

Thiago has been heralded for his "staggering" ability with a football by pundit Michael Owen but this is no use if he is unable to produce any level of quality on the pitch.

Liverpool could certainly have used his talents over recent weeks and months, providing a cool head and eagle-eyed vision on the field to dictate and guide play and help Liverpool retain control – recent fixtures against Manchester United are a good example of when this could have come into play.

The fact that he earns £200k per week as a Liverpool player is, frankly, astounding when considering what he is offering within Klopp's system, indeed eclipsing the wage of influential, ever-present stars such as Diaz.

While an influx of central midfield talent last summer has restored Liverpool's position as a major player in both the Premier League and on the continent, there is little question that Thiago could have been the standout – or one of them – this term.

When combining his £25m transfer fee with his earnings since joining Liverpool, it can be inferred that the veteran ace has drained Liverpool over £63m since arriving on English shores, and given that only the FA Cup and Carabao Cup have been gleaned during this period – competitions that he has not made the greatest level of contribution toward – it's, unfortunately, one to put to bed.

Klopp must drop Liverpool’s 3/10 struggler who was worse than Nunez

Klopp's departure will be keenly felt this summer, but sadly Thiago leaving in tow is only something that will benefit Liverpool going forward, freeing up room and resources for the new era.

Middlesbrough, Coventry and Blackburn racing to sign "special" free agent

As the beginning of the summer transfer window draws near, clubs in the Championship are already beginning to think about reinforcements ahead of the next campaign. Among those are Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough, who are set to go head-to-head to land a free agent in the coming months.

Middlesbrough and Blackburn in transfer battle

Separated by just four points in the Championship, with Middlesbrough 13th and Blackburn sitting 16th, it's no real surprise that the two clubs are already thinking about reinforcements. Boro will be most disappointed with their campaign, having reached the play-offs last season. Truth be told, however, since losing the likes of Chuba Akpom last summer, they have lacked the edge that saw them reach the top six under Michael Carrick last season.

Middlesbrough managerMichaelCarrick

Blackburn, meanwhile, have also dropped off this season, which resulted in the recent dismissal of Jon Dahl Tomasson. Replaced by John Eustace, the new boss is yet to earn his first Championship win at Ewood Park.

As both sides seek improvements, reports suggest that they have already turned to the free agent market. According to The Sun, Blackburn Rovers, Middlesbrough and Coventry City have held talks with Brendan Galloway, who will be a free agent upon the expiry of his current contract at Plymouth Argyle at the end of the season.

Middlesbrough eyeing move for "tremendous" PL player for Carrick

This move could hand Middlesbrough a major boost in search of promotion…

ByTom Cunningham Dec 3, 2023

Galloway is reportedly yet to receive a new offer from Plymouth, allowing their Championship rivals to enter the race for his signature. Having previously played for Everton in the Premier League, there's no doubt that the left-back has the quality to improve both Middlesbrough and Blackburn.

"Special" Galloway will have decision to make

In a season which has already seen them lose manager Steven Schumacher to a rival club, Plymouth are on course to suffer the same fate when it comes to Galloway. The 27-year-old, who has plenty of experience, will have quite the decision to make this summer. Boro under Carrick have shown how good they can be at their best, but so has Eustace, who has the chance to transform the current Blackburn side.

Whichever side he picks, Galloway is in a position to instantly make the mark that Roberto Martinez once tipped him to make at Everton, saying after the left-back made his debut: "Brendan is a young man that is developing into a very special defender. He is a defender that can cope with one-v-one situations, is very good in the air and is very composed on the ball.

"He can start the play, play as a left-back and probably in the future become a centre-half as well because his defending qualities are so good."

Ultimately, his Premier League dream didn't quite go to plan, but Galloway's next move has the chance to pave his pathway way back to England's top division this summer.

Essex seal tie as Zampa runs out Northeast with two needed off last ball

Hampshire and Essex Eagles tied for a second year in a row as Adam Zampa ran half-century maker Sam Northeast out off the last ball of a thrilling match.Hampshire, chasing 140 to win, needed 11 off the final over, having previously required 42 from three overs, before pulling it down to two runs from the last ball. With Northeast, who was on 72, on strike the batsman struck down the ground but could only find Zampa – who easily had Northeast out his ground attempting a second.Northeast had turned the match around with 73 from 56 balls, with the match seemingly Essex’s to win before the nervy finale. The shared points helps neither side in their hopes of progressing to the quarter-finals – they both sit on 11 points, two points adrift of Somerset and Middlesex.Having won the toss and chosen the bowl Hampshire struck early. Chris Wood continued his incredible first-over wicket-taking record when he had Tom Westley lbw to the first delivery of the match – it was the fifth time in this season’s Blast the left-armer had stuck in his first over.Kyle Abbott copied Wood in the next over as Essex were left 3 for 2 when Cameron Delport was brilliantly caught behind by Lewis McManus.Dan Lawrence and Adam Wheater then ambled along at around six an over in an 83-run stand for the third wicket to revive the innings – before Wheater was caught on the square boundary.Lawrence continued, though, with a series of delightful shots through and over the covers, to go with a towering six over midwicket. He passed 1,000 T20 runs and a 13th fifty of the season across all formats, off 37 balls. But as with his first 12 half-centuries, Lawrence couldn’t convert to three figures as he picked out Ian Holland at backward point while attempting a reverse scoop.Ryan ten Doeschate plumb lbw to Chris Morris and Abbott yorking Ravi Bopara and Simon Harmer in the same over to take figures of three for 15, also departed – leaving the Eagles on 139 for 7.Like Essex earlier, Hampshire lost both openers early on as James Vince and Rilee Rossouw both picked out Ravi Bopara on the point rope.Northeast and Liam Dawson attempted to rebuild for the hosts but despite running hard between the wickets they struggled to hit boundaries in their 68-run alliance. With seven overs to go, and only four fours between them, the required rate was up and 10 an over – with Dawson departing for 31 off 34 balls during that 14th over after slogging a sweep straight to cow corner. But thanks to some clever striking from Northeast, whose half century came in 46 balls with five fours, Hampshire ground themselves back into contention.Chris Morris and James Fuller, 17 off 12, both departed but Northeast and Lewis McManus collected 11 off the 18th over, 19 from the 19th over and managed to slice past the 11 needed off the final Mohammad Amir over before the last ball hijinx.

European giants, France and Netherlands played out a boring goalless draw on Friday in their second group game of Euro 2024. The only talking point from the dull game was a controversially disallowed goal of Xavi Simons around the 70th-minute mark, which according to manager Koeman should have been allowed.

AdvertisementWHAT RONALD KOEMAN SAID

Speaking to reporters after the game, the former Barcelona coach said, "I think the position of Dumfries is offside but he isn't disturbing the goalkeeper. When that happens it is a legal goal in my opinion. Also, you need five minutes to check it? I don't understand this."

Liverpool star and Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk also backed his coach's claim as he felt Simons' goal was a fair one. Speaking to Euro 2024's official media channel, he said, "We scored a goal that is a fair goal. He had no chance to get into that corner. But yeah, the English referee decided not to give it."

Premier League referees Anthony Taylor and Stuart Attwell, who ruled out the strike, were savagely trolled on social media for their controversial decision which did not go down well with fans online.

Wolves and Fosun given Armando Broja transfer ultimatum by Chelsea

There are now only five days to go until the transfer deadline on 1st February, and Gary O'Neil and Wolves still haven't managed to add a new striker to their squad, having allowed Sasa Kalajdzic and Fabio Silva to leave on loan for Eintracht Frankfurt and Rangers respectively.

One potential target for the Molineux outfit is Chelsea's Armando Broja, who doesn't appear to have a long-term future in west London. Wolves have been in touch, along with fellow Premier League sides Fulham, Crystal Palace and West Ham, to express their interest in a potential deal. The Blues are willing to sanction an initial loan, but they're insistent upon a £35m obligation to buy at the end of it.

As you can see in the table above, Broja has appeared in 19 games for Chelsea this season, and started five of the last seven with striker rival Nicolas Jackson away at the Africa Cup of Nations. Clearly, though, Mauricio Pochettino has been dissatisfied with his output, and is ready to move on.

Fosun now receive Broja ultimatum

According to transfer insider Dean Jones, Broja is Wolves' top striker target this month. However, Chelsea have issued an ultimatum to Fosun, telling them that they need to agree to the obligation to buy if they want to get a deal done. Wolves may feel as if they can test the Blues' resolve on the price tag, however, given that they clearly want rid of the Albanian.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones said: "Wolves' intent around Broja is definitely there. They will sign a striker, and they’d like it to be Broja. Chelsea say it can be done, but with an obligation.

"If the obligation is £35m, then that's a big call from Wolves if they're willing to throw themselves at that one because there's a reason that Chelsea are putting an obligation in there.

"That’s telling you that they don't want the player anymore if they're saying that Wolves have to buy him because if Chelsea still had faith in Broja, they would be sending him to Wolves to score the goals they've been hoping he would get and bring him back into the picture to do a job for them. But that's not the case at the moment. Chelsea are saying it's got to be an obligation."

O'Neil and Wolves eye "red-hot" striker available for £20m – report

Only Jude Bellingham has scored more goals than him this season.

ByDavid Comerford Jan 12, 2024 Diallo and Mayoral among Broja alternatives

If Wolves don't respond positively to the aforementioned ultimatum, there are a couple of different targets they could pivot towards in the final days of the window. One of those is Getafe striker Borja Mayoral, who's been watched closely and shares the same agent as Hugo Bueno.

Crystal Palace and Arsenal are interested too, but with Getafe demanding £20m, he too could prove overly expensive for a side walking a financial tightrope.

That could lead Wolves to favour Al-Shabab's Habib Diallo, who's apparently grown unhappy in Saudi Arabia and wants to return to Europe. There's rival interest in France and Germany, but they're apparently ready to loan him out if they receive an appropriate offer.

Wolves have clearly taken ample time to assess their options and lay the groundwork for some potential deals, but we're fast approaching the phase of the window where they need to press the button and move forward.
