Liverpool: Alisson nearing new deal

Liverpool are in ‘advanced talks’ with Alisson Becker over a contract extension, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The lowdown

On Friday, it was confirmed that right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has extended his deal until 2025.

Alisson still has three years to run in his current contract, having joined Liverpool in 2018 for £67million – a record fee for a goalkeeper at the time (via Sky Sports).

He’s gone on to make 130 appearances for the Reds, keeping 59 clean sheets and earning a host of individual honours including the Golden Glove and Best Men’s Goalkeeper Award in 2019.

Alisson memorably helped Liverpool secure a top-four finish last season with a stoppage-time winner against West Bromwich Albion after coming up for a corner.

The Reds’ assistant goalkeeping coach Jack Robinson has raved about his ‘unbelievable’ ability with the ball at his feet, suggesting that ‘he’s like [Andrea] Pirlo’ (via Liverpool Echo).

The latest

On the back of the Alexander-Arnold announcement, Romano suggested Alisson could be next to agree new terms.

The 28-year-old Brazilian ‘wants to stay’ at Anfield and is said to be deep into negotiations.

The verdict

It’s a little surprising to see Liverpool prioritise a new deal for Alisson, even though he’s arguably the best all-round goalkeeper in world football. The likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Fabinho are into the final two years of their deals, so you’d think they’d be ahead in the queue.

But it might just indicate the ease of the negotiations. Alisson has won the Premier League and Champions League with Liverpool and surely hasn’t even considered the possibility of moving elsewhere – fans will likely be delighted if he extends his deal even further.

– Vamos priorizar sempre o próximo jogo independentemente do campeonato. Não tem jeito, equipe grande é assim, ainda mais na nossa fase. Se tivesse tido o último ano com títulos, talvez poderia pensar assim. Mas não dá para priorizar, tem que matar um leão a cada dia. Não penso lá na frente. Penso no próximo jogo.

CPFC: Fans react to Ismaila Sarr links

Crystal Palace could revisit their interest in Watford winger Ismaila Sarr this summer, according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, and a number of Eagles supporters have been sharing their thoughts on the rumours on social media.

Palace had a £25m bid turned down for Sarr last season following the Hornets’ relegation to the Championship.

The 23-year-old starred at Vicarage Road in the second tier during the 2020/21 campaign, with his 13 goals and 10 assists proving vital to helping Watford seal an immediate return to the top flight.

According to The Sun, the Eagles are looking for a winger and could go back in for the Senegal international, who still has three years remaining on his Watford contract.

Palace have also been linked with Manchester City winger Morgan Rogers, with Patrick Vieira recently making Michael Olise his first signing in charge at Selhurst Park.

Palace fans react

@CPFCtransfersHQ shared the links to Sarr on Twitter on Saturday evening. Some Eagles fans were all for the move – one described a possible transfer as ’absolutely beautiful’ – although others were against a potential deal for the Watford maestro.

Southampton missed out on Vardy

In a recent interview, former Southampton sporting director Les Reed has confirmed that Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy was once on the Saints’ transfer radar.

Speaking to The Transfer Tavern in an exclusive interview, Reed confirmed that Vardy is one of a number of Leicester players who was admired by Southampton during his time at the club.

Since signing from Fleetwood Town in 201,2 the striker has well and truly established himself as a legend at the King Power Stadium, playing a key role in their shock title win in 2015/16.

In 352 appearances for the Foxes, he has contributed an impressive 147 goals and 61 assists, whilst he also earned 26 caps for England.

Whilst he is now 34-years-old, he shows little sign of slowing down, as he managed 15 goals and nine assists in 34 Premier League appearances last season, earning a superb 7.11 average rating from WhoScored for his performances.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

Although Southampton have a talismanic striker of their own in Danny Ings, the former Liverpool man has hit just 55 Premier League goals in his career, which is significantly fewer than the 118 scored by Vardy.

That Southampton were interested in the “unbelievable” Vardy during his time at Fleetwood, when he cost Leicester just £1m, then he surely would’ve proven to be a superb bargain signing at St Mary’s had they made a move for him,

It is difficult to know whether he would’ve enjoyed the same almost inconceivable success he has managed with Leicester City with the Saints, but it’s hard to think he wouldn’t have justified that £1m, at worst, so looking back with hindsight, Reed not managing to bring him to St Mary’s looks like a bit of a disaster.

Leeds youngster Casey could join Blackpool

Leeds United youngster Oliver Casey is reportedly in talks to join Blackpool this summer, allowing him regular football away from Elland Road.

The Lowdown: Casey impresses in academy

The 20-year-old has been a key performer in the Whites’ academy in recent years, making a total of 23 appearances for the Under-23s.

The 6 foot 2 centre-back has also appeared three times for Leeds’ first team, with his first game coming in the Championship in 2019/20.

There is no denying that minutes are going to be hard to come by for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, however, given the centre-back depth at the manager’s disposal.

The Latest: Blackpool linked with move for youngster

According to Football Insider, Blackpool want to sign Casey, having secured promotion to the Championship.

They see the youngster as a promising talent who would represent a good option in the second tier, and the Whites are happy for him to leave on a permanent deal.

A Thorp Arch source has allegedly told the outlet that negotiations are now underway to see the young talent leave the club for good this summer.

The Verdict: Right time to leave

While it is also nice to see young players make the grade at Leeds, for Casey’s sake, a move away makes far more sense at this stage in his career.

In Diego Llorente, Robin Koch, Liam Cooper and Pascal Struijk, Bielsa already has four strong centre-back options to call upon, meaning the Englishman could stagnate if he stays put.

Casey could find his level in the Championship, proving to be a key man for Blackpool and going on to enjoy a strong career – perhaps the Whites can even insert a buy-back clause in case his development in the second tier is really impressive.

Erik Ten Hag closes in on Spurs job

According to Italian outlet Il Messaggero, Erik ten Hag is one step away from becoming the new Tottenham manager.

The Lowdown: Levy’s search goes on

It is now seven weeks since Jose Mourinho was relieved of his duties as Spurs boss, but Daniel Levy is yet to decide on a successor.

Antonio Conte looked set to be the Portuguese’s replacement, but talks with the former Chelsea boss collapsed (The Guardian).

The Latest: Ten Hag close

However, it seems that Spurs could now be on the verge of securing an appointment, according to Il Messaggero.

It is now being said that Ten Hag is “one step away” from taking over from Mourinho despite him recently signing a new contract with current employers Ajax (Goal.com).

The Verdict: Top choice

If Spurs were able to secure the services of the 51-year-old, it would be a fantastic coup for Levy and co. Ten Hag has done a brilliant job with Ajax – the Amsterdam club have won the last three Eredivisie titles with the Dutchman in charge, winning 74 from a possible 93 matches in the division (Transfermarkt), while they even reached the Champions League semi-finals during the 2018/19 season when they eventually lost to Tottenham.

The new contract is likely to make any deal more expensive for the Lilywhites, but given how important it is to find the right man, they cannot afford to look for the cheapest option and hope for the best. Ten Hag could be an inspired arrival at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

In other news, Tottenham have been offered this Premier League star.

Celtic linked to Freddie Woodman

Many new faces are expected to arrive at Celtic this summer as the Glasgow giants aim to rebuild their squad, and one of the first names through the door could be Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

What’s the story?

According to The Chronicle, the 24-year-old is set to leave St James’ Park after finding his route to the first team blocked following a successful 12-month spell at Swansea City.

The report claims another loan move away from Woodman’s parent club is likely to occur, with Premier League outfit Southampton also keen on the former England Under-21 international’s signature.

Fans will be buzzing

Celtic surrendered their Scottish Premiership title without a fight in 2020/21, finishing a huge 25 points behind their fiercest rivals Rangers.

A key reason behind their disappointing collapse was their poor defensive record compared to Steven Gerrard’s men.

The Hoops leaked 16 more goals than the newly-crowned champions, largely down to poor performances between the sticks from shot-stoppers Vasilis Barkas and Scott Bain and getting a new goalkeeper needs to be high on Dominic McKay’s list of priorities.

Therefore, news that the highly-rated Woodman has been linked with a move to Parkhead will surely have the club’s supporters buzzing.

After keeping 20 clean sheets in 45 Championship appearances for Swansea throughout the recently concluded campaign, interest is high in the £8.1 million rated keeper (as per Transfermarkt), and he remains open-minded about his next move.

“I hope this isn’t the last game I play in a Swansea shirt,” Woodman revealed after the Swans were defeated in the play-off final.

“The main thing is to sort out my next step; if that’s in a Swansea shirt, then brilliant, but if it’s not, I have to crack on, and that’s football.

“I’m a Swansea City fan now; I’ll be looking out for their results straight away, but football’s a funny game, and anything can happen. We’ll see what happens.”

With Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow both enjoying solid seasons at Newcastle and with both seemingly ahead of Woodman in Steve Bruce’s pecking order, the youngster may have to leave boyhood club once again in search of regular game time.

He has experience of playing north of the border before, though, having enjoyed a six-month stint with Aberdeen back in 2018, and the 6 ft 1 gem could be the ideal signing to get Celtic back on track. Celtic fans will surely be buzzing if they get themselves a new goalkeeper for the season, as they were let down too often last year by both Barkas and Bain.
