Now just a minute …

Whoa there. Hold your horses. It’s about time a little straightening out was done on the cricket front. That’s to avoid some of the constant re-writing of history that is inadvertently, or perhaps that should be advertently, being done to cricket.Just as some of the great quotations of history are so commonly mashed up, so are some cricket facts.People may foul up Sir Winston Churchill’s famous words as Britain faced invasion in World War Two from the original, “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat” to the sadly common “blood, sweat and tears”, who were after all, a very good rock group, but not a true representation of Churchill’s fighting talk. But they are wrong. All of which it might be said have nothing whatsoever to do with cricket.Ah, but there you are. It’s the mis-quoting that is the problem. And New Zealand cricket history is being done a serious dis-service by those who would perpetuate the myth that the Sri Lankan batsmen at the 1996 World Cup, bless their hearts, were the originators of the 15-over slog at the start of One-Day Internationals. In their case, Sanath Jayasuriya especially, helped them to a famous World Cup victory. But the facts are quite different. You see four years earlier, a big burly brute by the name of Mark Greatbatch, a batsman who had played a bit of rugby in his time, and another burly bloke, a bit shorter but who had played considerably more rugby, Rod Latham, took to the opposition bowling on several occasions. The North Stand at Eden Park took such a hammering it was pulled down a few years later.Oops sorry! It was pulled down but the Greatbatch-Latham hitting was only partly responsible, well, perhaps minutely. But check out the facts, especially in the games against the South Africans and the West Indies. Greatbatch wasn’t chosen for the two games against Australia and Sri Lanka and only came in when John Wright was injured. There’s no doubting the effectiveness of the Greatbatch-Latham combination. Against South Africa they scored 103 runs in 15 overs! They put on 67 in 11 overs against the West Indies a week later.Greatbatch scored 73 off 77 balls against India and New Zealand were 75/1 after 15 overs. Then followed with 35 off 37 balls against England.Fair chance that a recognisable practise of thrashing in the first 15 overs was well advanced before 1996, wouldn’t you agree?Certainly Greatbatch and Latham were the first successful duo in the art.It could be argued with little opposition that Glenn Turner developed the early assault years before anyone else, even if doing it all by himself, on the English county circuit.Kris Srikkanth started the same process in international matches for India in matches against Sri Lanka in 1982/83, just a month or two before Turner returned to the international scene from which he had been absent since 1979.Turner proceeded to show, in the one-day game what he had been doing in English county cricket for some seasons by toying with bowlers in the first 15 overs during England’s three ODIs tour of New Zealand in 1983 and it continued against Sri Lanka that same season. In his book, ‘Opening Up’ Turner described his approach, “My policy in such games was, when I felt in good nick and the ball looked as if it could be hit, to get after it.”In the first ODI at Auckland, Turner and Bruce Edgar put on 101 runs by the 21st over.In the second at Wellington, they scored 152 by the halfway stage of the innings. Turner scored at a strike of 100.Then in Christchurch, they failed. They scored only 64.In the Auckland match against Sri Lanka, Turner scored 140 off 130 balls at a strike rate of 107.69.But in a magnanimous show of bi-partisanship, all New Zealanders will admit that Australia might even lay claim to the initiation of the policy in one-day games, although it proved a oncer. The second final of the 1982/83 World Series in Melbourne saw Steve Smith and Graeme Wood put on 140 in 24 overs against a Richard Hadlee-less attack to well and truly sink New Zealand.Perhaps that should be enough evidence, or then again it might prove that ‘a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.’Sorry, as Alexander Pope originally wrote it, that should be “A little learning is a dangerous thing”.

Journalist drops big Thuram to Spurs update

Writing on Twitter, Sportitalia journalist Rudy Galetti has dropped a major claim involving Tottenham Hotspur and Marcus Thuram.

The Lowdown: Spurs moving for Thuram?

RMC Sport reporter Mohamed Bouhafsi first broke news that Tottenham are in advanced discussions to sign the Frenchman who is currently at Euro 2020 (Twitter).

Indeed, the journalist also claimed it is very likely the 23-year-old will leave current club Borussia Monchengladbach this summer after an impressive season in Germany.

Bouhafsi believes a swoop for Thuram is now a Spurs ‘priority’ this summer with the transfer window now well underway.

The Latest: Journalist drops Thuram to Spurs claim…

Writing on Twitter, fellow journalist Galetti has dropped his own update on the situation.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-2/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, he believes that talks are in progress between Spurs and Monchengladbach over the transfer of Thuram but his €30 million (£25.7m) release clause recently expired.

This could mean Tottenham will now have to pay more to seal his signature.

“The times are getting longer between Tottenham and Borussia Monchengladbach for Marcus Thuram,” explained the reporter on social media.

“The €30m release clause recently expired and Spurs should invest at least €40/45m to close the deal.

“Talks in progress.”

The Verdict: Worth it?

Widely seen as a really exciting talent, this move will depend on Tottenham’s ability to either drive the price down or get as many unwanted players out the door as possible.

Tottenham have to adopt a sell-to-buy policy this summer with the coronavirus pandemic having a severe impact on their financing.

New managing director Fabio Paratici may have a huge job on his hands if he wishes to sign Thuram this summer, and going by his stats, the player should have no shortage of suitors.

Out of the entire Monchengladbach squad, the attacker averaged more completes dribbles per 90 in the Bundesliga (1.6) than any of his teammates and was only beaten by Alassane Plea in terms of shots attempted every match (WhoScored).

He may be worth the price tag, but whether Spurs have it to invest is another matter entirely.

Swansea City agree Joel Piroe deal

Swansea City have agreed a seven-figure fee to bring Joel Piroe to the Liberty Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Wales Online, who claim that Steve Cooper’s side have agreed a fee of around £1m with PSV Eindhoven for the transfer of the 21-year-old centre-forward.

However, it is also reported that the deal is far from complete at present, as the former Netherlands U20 international is currently on holiday, something that is slowing the process down, while Brexit complications could also pose a threat to the £675k-rated man’s switch to Wales this summer.

Cooper will be buzzing

As long as the finer issues of the deal are ironed out, the fact that Swansea could be set to land a new centre-forward so soon after the departure of Andre Ayew is sure to have left Cooper buzzing.

And, while Piroe’s returns for PSV last season were far from breathtaking, the young striker’s potential is very much something that Swansea fans should be getting excited about.

Indeed, over his 11 Eredivisie appearances for Roger Schmidt’s side last season, none of which came as starts, the 21-year-old managed just one goal, in addition to taking an average of 0.5 shots and making 0.1 key passes per game.

These metrics saw the £1.1k-per-week forward earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.70, however, considering Piroe featured for an average of just 12 minutes over each of his 11 appearances, the former Feyenoord player had very little opportunity to have any real impact on his side.

Furthermore, having been targeted by the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Juventus as a youngster, a 17-year-old Piroe featured on the Metro’s top 50 U20s list, with the striker himself comparing his style of play to that of Bayern Munich goal-machine Robert Lewandowski, as well as the report dubbing the striker as being extremely technically-gifted.

As such, with Cooper’s reputation for developing young players, should a move to Swansea go on to be completed, we would not bet against Piroe finally going on to fulfil his potential with Swansea next season.

Sheffield United suffer Jokanovic blow

Sheffield United’s hopes of appointing Slavisa Jokanovic this summer appear to have taken a blow after West Brom joined the race for the former Fulham manager.

It has been widely reported in recent weeks that the Serbian is the favourite to take over at Bramall Lane this summer, and given his impressive record in the Championship, it looks as if it would be an excellent appointment for the Blades.

However, journalist Alan Nixon has suggested (via The 72) that Jokanovic is now on West Brom’s shortlist for a new manager, following the news that Sam Allardyce would be leaving his role at The Hawthorns after their relegation to the Championship.

Both West Brom and Sheffield United were relegated from the top flight this season and the Baggies have also been linked with a move for Chris Wilder, who has been out of a job since leaving Bramall Lane back in March.

If they decide to go all-out for Jokanovic, who is currently in charge of Qatari side Al-Gharafa SC, then it looks as if it will be a straight race between the two clubs this summer, which could be a huge blow to the Blades’ chances of appointing him.

There is no telling which side Jokanovic would prefer out of the two, as the Baggies finished just three points clear of Sheffield United this season, yet both will be attractive propositions for a manager looking to get another promotion to the top flight on his CV.

The Serbian first earned promotion with Watford in 2014/15 before leaving his role at Vicarage Road, later returning to English football with Fulham, where he would help the Cottagers to play-off success in the 2017/18 season.

This achievement earned him the praise of former Fulham midfielder Danny Murphy, who praised him for the “remarkable” job he did at Craven Cottage.

Therefore, it is easy to see why both Sheffield United and West Brom would be keen on the 52-year-old this summer as they both seek an immediate return to the Premier League, and therefore Blades owner Prince Abdullah bin Mosa’ad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud must act quickly if he wants to ensure that Jokanovic is plying his trade at Bramall Lane next season.

England team distance themselves from controversy

Channel4 have sparked controversy by suggesting that Pakistan may have tampered with the ball during the dramatic English batting collapse on the last day at Old Trafford

George Dobell04-Jun-2001Channel4 have sparked controversy by suggesting that Pakistan may have tampered with the ball during the dramatic English batting collapse on the last day at Old Trafford.”If the match referee had been watching on television, one wonders what he would have made of those pictures,” presenter Mark Nicholas commented, after showing inconclusive pictures of Pakistan captain Waqar Younis with the ball. The Pakistan camp have strenuously denied the allegations and have pointed out that neither the umpires or match-referee have spoken to them on the matter. “No one spoke to me about the ball,” Waqar Younis said.”If there was any ball tampering I would have known about it,” Yawar Saeed, the tour manager said. “There was absolutely nothing wrong. We won the match fair and square and people should be happy with that.”Most people in the game will be saddened to hear that such allegations have been levelled again. The last series between these sides in England was marred by accusations of ball tampering, but the relationship between the England and Pakistan teams has improved greatly in recent months. Attention should really be on the wonderful game the two sides have just contested, and some great last day bowling. No doubt such comments will be derided as further evidence of “whinging poms” from the Australian tourists. They may have a point. But not about the England team, who have had no complaints after falling victim to the mercurial talents of this Pakistan team.England captain Alec Stewart has been keen to play down the controversy over no-balls too. Several wickets went down to deliveries that television replays suggest should have been called as the bowler over stepped, but Stewart insisted that it made no difference to the result.”The fact is Pakistan beat us,” he admitted. “With people like Wasim, Waqar and Saqlain they are capable of knocking over sides in a session. Credit to Pakistan.””I’m not going to start moaning, saying umpires’ decisions cost us the game,” he continued. “They are there to do a job to the best of their ability. Like batsmen, bowlers, fielders, everyone makes mistakes. As players we take it on the chin and carry on.”Twenty years ago when the BBC had only two cameras, things like that weren’t picked up. Now there’s 10, 12, 15 cameras anything and everything can be seen.”

Everton fans react to club’s Davies tweet

Tom Davies put in a solid performance as Everton won away to West Ham United on Sunday.

Having played just four minutes in the win over Arsenal and then watched on from the bench as Everton lost to Aston Villa, Davies was recalled to the starting line-up at the weekend as Andre Gomes dropped to the bench.

How did Davies fare at the London Stadium?

Davies earned a SofaScore rating of 7.0 for his display at the London Stadium, completing 23 of his 26 passes – an accuracy of 88% – and both of his long balls found their target. The 22-year-old won three of his six ground duels and pitched in with two clearances, two interceptions and one block.

The victory, secured by Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s first-half strike, moved Everton to within a point of seventh-placed Tottenham Hotspur with a game in hand, and Davies will be hopeful of keeping his place for their trip to Villa Park on Thursday evening.

Everton’s official account tweeted ‘VIVA TOM DAVIES’ on Monday morning, and here’s how supporters reacted, with many calling out Carlo Ancelotti for overlooking the 22-year-old in recent fixtures.

Wolves fans annoyed by Coady comments

Conor Coady has taken criticism from some Wolverhampton Wanderers fans ahead of the trip to The Hawthorns for Monday’s Black Country derby.

Wolves head into the game in 12th place, a full seven points adrift of the top half. They are looking to make amends following a woeful 4-0 defeat against Burnley last time out.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have finished in a highly creditable seventh place in the last two seasons, but they have struggled this time around amid the long-term absence of last year’s top scorer Raul Jimenez.

What did Coady say about Wolves’ season?

Speaking to the club’s official website, Wolves captain Coady admitted that his side’s efforts hadn’t been ‘good enough’.

The £16,500-per-week centre-back went on to concede that they had regressed from their high-flying campaigns of the last two years.

Having led 2-1 when they last met Albion in January, Wolves were beaten 3-2 on home soil, but they know that gaining revenge on Monday would go some way to ensuring West Brom aren’t playing top-flight football next season.

Fan feed Talking Wolves relayed Coady’s comments, and here’s how some supporters reacted.

O único jogador no departamento médico é o zagueiro Roger Carvalho (tornozelo).
