The tie against Aberdeen is effectively a dead rubber for the Light Blues, as they will finish second in the table regardless of what happens this weekend.

All eyes will be on the return leg against Athletic Bilbao in Spain on Thursday evening. A 0-0 result during the first leg, which saw Robin Propper sent off after 12 minutes, along with Liam Kelly saving a penalty, means the Gers have a fighting chance of making it to the semi-finals.

There were a few poor performers during the first leg, however, and this should force Barry Ferguson into making a change or two, especially with the return tie in mind.

One player who should be dropped against the Dons is Cyriel Dessers, who was dismal against the La Liga side.

Unfortunately, he didn’t have the best of games for the Light Blues. Typically, Dessers missed a big chance, while failing to even register a single shot on target during his 85 minutes on the pitch.

The striker managed to take just 18 touches, completed four of his ten passes and won only 40% of his total duels contested against Bilbao, offering next to nothing in the final third.

Despite his decent scoring record for the club – netting 45 goals in 102 appearances – he is always going to be a point of discussion among the fanbase.

Assistant manager Neil McCann said of the striker last week: “Cyriel Dessers will always divide opinion because he will miss chances, but this is the life of a striker. I was so proud of him after the game because he didn’t stop pushing and making runs – we need to create chances for him and that is what we are doing.”

In December, journalist Scott Bradley criticised the striker, saying: “I’ve had a lot of patience with Cyriel Dessers, but Rangers need to cut ties with him in January. Rangers didn’t move him on during the January transfer window, but it might be a possibility that he moves on in the summer, especially considering it could be the ideal time to cash in with two years left on his deal.

With changes expected ahead of the Aberdeen clash, Ferguson will be keen to give minutes to those who haven’t featured as often in the last few weeks.

Could this see Igamane return to the starting XI? He will need some minutes in the legs ahead of the second leg next Thursday. Igamane has already scored once against the Dons this season, netting in the comfortable 3-0 victory back in January.

Before his winner against Celtic midway through March, that was his last Premiership goal and there has been a slight downturn in his form in recent weeks, no doubt about that.

The overall feeling, however, is that his maiden season at Rangers has been an overwhelming success. Across 40 matches in all competitions for the club, the 22-year-old has scored 14 goals and grabbed three assists.

This works out as a goal contribution once every 2.3 matches. Given how poorly received he was on arrival last summer, he has proven plenty of his critics wrong.

In recent weeks. Ferguson has deployed Igamane on the left wing in order to cater for Dessers as his main option through the middle.

The Moroccan international is at his best when operating in a central role, especially as his hold-up play is far better than his senior teammate.

Indeed, journalist Joshua Barrie noted after the 0-0 result in midweek that Igamane had made nine successful passes/carries during his 15-minute cameo at Ibrox.

In comparison, Dessers only managed eight successful passes/carries across 85 minutes of action on the pitch. It is clear that the youngster is far better at linking up play, carrying the ball into the final third and is much more energetic.

Starting him against Aberdeen would allow the centre-forward to get some vital minutes in his legs ahead of the second leg against Bilbao, where he must start.

The striker ticks so many boxes for Celtic, at a time when Rodgers will want more firepower added to his squad, not least his age. Strelec turned 24 on Friday, meaning he now has plenty of experience at a good level, but is still a young player whose peak shouldn’t arrive for another few years.

It’s a relationship that has been on the rocks ever since the former Sporting Club boss arrived and dropped Garnacho for the Manchester derby and now one that looks likely to come to a bitter end when the summer arrives.

INEOS could certainly do with the spending power potentially gained by selling the Argentine too, with Napoli reportedly submitting a bid worth over £60m to secure his signature in recent days and Amorim ready to show the winger the door.

Such a sale would allow the Red Devils to go in pursuit of some much-needed reinforcements of their own amid links to the likes of Mike Maignan in recent weeks. The shot-stopper is one of the best in his position and could bring an end to Andre Onana’s nightmare spell between the sticks at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, United could also land an instant replacement for Garnacho this summer who has looked destined for big things in South America.

The likes of analyst Ben Mattinson haven’t shied away from praising the teenager either, dubbing him a “technical winger” at the beginning of last year. After scoring seven goals and assisting another eight last season too, it’s fair to say that Subiabre is exactly that.

After an incredible few months, Arsenal suffered their first defeat since August 31st at the hands of Aston Villa on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta’s side went behind in the first half, and while they did pull one back in the second, they were the victims of a 95th-minute Emiliano Buendía winner.

It wasn’t a terrible performance from the Gunners, but it was also some way off their best, and one of the players who has received plenty of criticism from the fans has been Martin Odegaard.

The captain was certainly not to blame for the result, but he did look a little off the pace at times, and after his underwhelming season last year, he is under the microscope more than most.

Starting with the player who is perhaps the closest to eventually challenging Odegaard for a place in the starting lineup: Ethan Nwaneri.

The Hale End star is already a regular in the match-day squads, and while there has been some concern from fans over his lack of game time this season, it’s important to remember he is still just 18 years old.

Moreover, due to injuries, he ended up playing a far more significant role in the team last season than anyone would have predicted, and to say he impressed would be an understatement.

For example, the “phenomenal” prospect, as dubbed by former professional Stephen Warnock, scored nine goals and provided two assists in 37 appearances, totalling 1378 minutes.

That works out to a goal involvement every 3.36 games, or more crucially, one every 125.27 minutes, which helps to justify Joe Cole’s claim that “he’s the most exciting footballer in England and maybe Europe.”

Now, a lot of his game time did come out wide, in place of Bukayo Saka, but the Enfield-born gem is first and foremost an attacking midfielder, as it’s where he spent most of his time in the academy and where his combination of shooting, passing and dribbling abilities are best placed.

There is little chance of Nwaneri replacing the Norwegian this season, but in a couple of years, if he fulfils his potential, there could be a real battle for that ten position.

2 Max Dowman

After Nwaneri, the Arsenal gem who feels like they could seriously rival Odegaard in a few years, is, of course, Max Dowman.

The 15-year-old might just be the most talked-about prospect in the country this season, and based on his form in the academy and for the senior side, it’s not hard to see why.

For example, when it comes to the former, the Chelmsford-born phenom has racked up a comical tally of six goals and one assist in just four appearances across the U19S and U21S.

Then, when it comes to the first team, he has already, in the words of analyst Ben Mattinson, started “humiliating Premier League players.”

For example, he ran rings around Leeds United on his league debut, then became the youngest player in the club’s history to start a game in the Gunners’ League Cup clash with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Finally, if all that wasn’t enough for someone who hasn’t even finished his GCSEs yet, he also became the youngest player in Champions League history when he came off the bench against Slavia Prague.

Now, like with Nwaneri, Dowman is not going to be a serious rival for Odegaard this season, but at the rate he is progressing, that time could come far sooner than most are expecting.

Last but by no means least, the final Arsenal player who could one day be the star to displace the captain from the team is Holger Quintero.

Now, just a week or so ago, most fans would have absolutely no idea who the 16-year-old was, but now, after the Gunners signed him and his twin brother Edwin Quintero, he has become one of the most exciting youngsters on the club’s books, and for good reason.

According to Mattinson, the Ecuadorian wonderkid is a “skilful attacking midfielder with 1v1 prowess to take on players”, which sounds quite a bit like Dowman, which can’t be a bad thing.

He appears to be more than just another promising youngster, though, as respected talent scout Jacek Kulig has stuck his neck out, labelling him “one of the most exciting U17s in South America.”

He is also someone who could potentially play the probing through balls that Odegaard has started to bring into his game, with Mattinson claiming he has an “excellent weight of pass” and is a “decisive creator with a killer final ball.”

However, due to rules around foreign-born youngsters, the midfielder won’t be able to join up with his new teammates until January 2027, so he is probably the last in line to compete with Odegaard.

Ultimately, the captain’s place in the team is currently safe, as it should be, but with three of the most exciting players in the game coming up behind him, Odegaard might have to step up his game over the next few years.

Trafford was originally told he would be joining as the new first-choice goalkeeper, but the former Burnley man has found game time hard to come by recently, with Gianluigi Donnarumma emerging as the preferred option between the sticks.

Are Manchester United back on track? It’s probably premature to make such a conclusive claim, but then we can’t help but notice the hint of success now that Ruben Amorim has strung together a five-match unbeaten run in the Premier League.

It was refreshing to see the Portuguese coach speak candidly after the recent draw at Tottenham Hotspur, though. Amorim understands that, while progress has been made in recent months, there is so much work still to be plied.

While the likes of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have reshaped the Red Devil frontline for the better, there’s no question that issues remain in the centre of the field, even with Casemiro resurgent and the skipper, Bruno Fernandes, in fine form.

Tottenham Hotspur have endured an impressive start to life under Thomas Frank over the last couple of months, as seen by the club’s current sixth-place standing in the Premier League.

The Dane took the reins from Ange Postecoglou during the summer and has made an immediate impact in changing the Lilywhites’ fortunes within the final third of the pitch.

His side have already found the back of the net on 17 occasions in the first ten outings of the campaign, with such a tally being the fourth best of any team in the division at present.

The goals have been massively spread out across the first-team squad, with nine players already getting themselves on the scoresheet in England’s top-flight in 2025/26.

Centre-back Micky van de Ven and centre-forward Richarlison are currently sitting at the top of the goalscoring charts on three goals, but the latter has failed to score in any of his last five league outings.

Whilst Frank’s men have impressed during the early stages of the current campaign, their tallies within the final third will no doubt have been massively boosted if they had one player at their disposal.

Winger Bukayo Saka has been a player Spurs supporters have no doubt envied over the last few years, with the attacker often providing the goods for bitter North London rivals, Arsenal.

Many of his efforts have directly affected the Spurs faithful, even coming up with goods in the North London Derby and securing countless victories for Mikel Arteta’s side.

After his breakthrough in 2020, the Arsenal star has featured against Spurs on ten separate occasions, subsequently being on the winning side in 60% of the outings.

In 2025/26, the 24-year-old has only netted twice in the Premier League, but his underlying stats highlight the top-level quality the winger possesses within the final third.

Such numbers further reaffirm the 24-year-old’s talent within attacking areas, with Frank no doubt wishing he had his own version of the winger within his own first-team ranks.

The Spurs star who’s similar to Saka & better than Johnson

Brennan Johnson was seen as a huge investment for Spurs in the summer of 2023, after the hierarchy forked out a staggering £47.5m for the attacker’s signature from Nottingham Forest.

Eyebrows were raised at the time, given the nature of the transfer fee, but a couple of years on from his switch to North London, he’s been unable to match the expectations that were placed upon him.

The Welsh international may have scored 18 times in all competitions last campaign, but his performances left a lot to be desired – even being subject to abuse from supporters on social media.

Johnson was responsible for one of the club’s biggest moments in recent history, as he netted the winner against Manchester United in the Europa League final back in May 2025.

Frank’s arrival could have handed the 24-year-old a new lease of life, especially after the Dane previously tried to land his services during his time as Brentford manager.

However, despite netting two goals in each of the first two league games of the season, he’s since dropped down the pecking order, often being unreliable when called upon by the manager.

Such a situation was apparent in the recent clash with FC Copenhagen in the Champions League, where Johnson found the back of the net, but was also sent off after a reckless challenge.

His drop down the pecking order has no doubt been as a result of the summer addition of Mohammed Kudus, with the Ghanaian joining the Lilywhites in a £55m transfer during the off-season.

The 25-year-old has cemented his place on the right-hand side in the starting eleven, already registering one goal and four assists in the Premier League to date.

Kudus, who’s been labelled “phenomenal” by one analyst, netted his first goal against Leeds United, with such a performance seeing the attacker attempt six take-ons – leading to Ben Mattinson claiming he’s “very similar to Saka”.

Given the levels he’s produced in recent weeks, Frank has certainly made the right call in opting to utilise Kudus over Johnson, with the Ghanaian massively outperforming the Welshman this campaign.

Alongside the better tally of combined goals and assists at present, he’s also achieved more progressive passes and carries per 90 – offering Frank’s men a more all-round presence with the ball at his feet.

His chance creation is further highlighted in his higher tally of passes completed and key passes registered per 90 – numbers which have seen him notch the joint-highest assist tally of any player in the division.

After Kudus’ immediate impact in North London, there’s no reason why he can’t be the club’s own version of the Englishman – especially after Mattinson’s praise and comparisons.

Should the winger continue on his current trajectory under Frank at Spurs, he certainly could play a huge part in any future success and help the club reach the next level domestically and continentally.
