Newcastle United: Government hopes takeover can be resurrected

The British government have hope that the failed takeover of Newcastle United by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium can be resurrected.

As per The Guardian, high-level intermediaries are believed to be engaged in ongoing efforts to negotiate a compromise following the disputes between the Premier League and the Tyneside club.

Steve Bruce’s side made an official statement just a few days ago that confirmed that they have issued arbitration proceedings against England’s highest division, and it goes on to say that it is unclear as to when those proceedings would be resolved, given the approach of the English top flight and indeed its lawyers.

The Saudis reportedly remain as determined as ever in their pursuit to try and take the Magpies off of the hands of Mike Ashley, but it may not be as easy given the disputes between NUFC and the PL.

Can the Newcastle takeover be resurrected?

Indeed, there is still hope that the proposed takeover of Newcastle can be resurrected if their dispute with the league goes all the way to a court case.

If indeed they win that case, then the KSA group may decide to re-submit their bid, and thus grow closer to being the new owners at St. James’ Park.

West Ham make Burnley’s James Tarkowski their priority target

Right after confirmation that Grady Diangana had left West Ham to join newly-promoted West Brom on Friday evening, news emerged that the Hammers have set their sights on James Tarkowski.

The Telegraph have claimed that David Moyes’ side have already made a bid worth around £20m for the Burnley centre-back as they prepare to spend the money that came from Diangana’s exit.

The report adds that Tarkowski is a “priority target” for Moyes, and that an opening offer for the 27-year-old has been turned down.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

The Burnley powerhouse – who earns around £50k-per-week at Turf Moor – has established himself as a top central defender in the Premier League, earning a couple of caps for England along the way.

Danny Murphy once hailed him as a “super player” after an impressive performance in a victory over Everton, whilst he was a rock at the back last season, playing in every single top-flight game.

Tarkowski was crucial as the Clarets finished in the top-half of the table, even coming up with the assist for Burnley’s goal in their 1-1 draw against champions Liverpool.

The 6 foot 1 ace would bring plenty of Premier League experience to West Ham’s back-line, and would surely improve a defence that conceded a disappointing 62 goals – only the four teams that finished below them let in more.

With the new season getting underway next week, Moyes will be keen to get a deal done as soon as possible.

Cappielow Park

Key information about Cappielow Park

Cappielow Park was opened in 1879 and now houses the Scottish Championship side Greenock Morton FC. The ground is located across East Hamilton Street from the River Clyde in Greenock and supposedly has a Scandinavian origin.

Its current maximum capacity is 11,589, 5,741 of which are seated, and it has a pitch that measures 100m by 64m. The surface of the field is covered with grass and it has no running pitch surrounding it.

The record attendance at Cappielow Park was set in 1922 when 23,500 supporters witnessed a league-deciding game against Celtic.

A history of Cappielow Park

Cappielow Park has been the home of Greenock Morton FC ever since it was opened way back in 1879. The Scottish team has redeveloped it in recent years and although it’s not a huge ground nor the most modern one, it is one of the bigger stadiums in its respective league.

But, even with that being said and despite the obvious traditional spirit and the overall character it presents, Cappielow Park is slowly but surely beginning to show its age. Being their residents’ home for more than 140 years, that doesn’t exactly come as a huge surprise either.

In its early years, not much was done to refurbish it and it wouldn’t be until 1931 that the main stand was built. Originally, it had wooden benches installed which were actually present at the stadium until as late as the 1990s when the club decided to replace them with plastic bucket seating.

But still, that is not to say that Cappielow Park has not seen any exciting fixtures or big events take place there. In fact, the ground hosted an international clash between Scotland and Wales in the 1902 British Home Championship and early in its history, it was also used for public lectures, track cycling and athletics.

In 1922, Cappielow Park would record its highest ever attendance when 23,500 fans came to watch a league-deciding game against Celtic, ultimately leading to Celtic clinching the title. But interestingly enough, Greenock Morton FC are not the only residents at the stadium.

In recent years, both Clydebank and Ayr United have played their respective home matches at Cappielow Park. The former team after Boghead was closed and the latter while their Somerset Park was having new floodlights installed. Clydebank ended up staying from 1999 until 2002.

And since 2013, Celtic U20 also call it home and it hosts regular youth international fixtures as well. On 12 December 2008, the club announced they bought a stand from eternal rivals St Mirren, who were vacating their Love Street stadium to move to St Mirren Park, and would re-erect it at the Wee Dublin end of their ground.

They also bought two floodlights from them as well.

Bloomfield Road

Key information about Bloomfield Road

Bloomfield Road was built in 1899 and is now the home of Blackpool FC. The ground is located in the city of Blackpool in Lancashire and was the 68th stadium in the country to host a Football League match.

Its current capacity stands at 16,220 and it has a pitch that measures 102m by 67m. The surface is covered with grass but there is no undersoil heating installed nor a running track surrounding it.

The record attendance of 38,098 was set during Blackpool’s clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers on 17 September 1955.

A history of Bloomfield Road

Bloomfield Road was constructed way back in 1899 and has been housing Blackpool ever since the club moved into the stadium in 1901. Before then, they were actually settled at two different grounds: Raikes Hall Gardens and Athletic Grounds.

It’s also interesting to note that Bloomfield Road was originally known as Gamble’s Field after the farmer who owned the land but was renamed shortly after Blackpool FC merged with South Shore F.C. in mid-December 1899 and then moved into the stadium, which was then owned by the latter team.

The first clash after the merger was on 23 December with the hosts beating a 10-man Horwich R.M.I 8-0. There was not much to see at the stadium back then with only a small wooden grandstand with about 300 places and a perimeter fence surrounding the pitch. Interestingly, Blackpool would move in and out of the ground in the following years, alternating between Raikes Hall Gardens and Bloomfield Road, until finally, at the start of the 1901/02 campaign, the latter would become their official home.

In the years and decades after that, the stadium would gradually improve, most notably boosting the capacity to over 20,000 by the time the mid-1920s arrived. In the 1930s, the club also erected the Spion Kop, adding more space and increasing the total figure to over 30,000. But most of the improvements in the 1920s were indeed prompted by the big fire of 1917 that destroyed the entire southern end along with the offices, a lot of silverware and documentation.

Still, after the 1920s and 1930s, the development stopped and wouldn’t resume until the 1950s when the East Paddock was extended. In the following decade, Bloomfield Road could host around 38,000 supporters but that figure would subsequently dip following the conversion of some areas into seating places and later due to safety requirements. Around that time, the Spion Kop was also partially covered..

As the new millennium approached, the ground deteriorated and was in dire need of renovation once again. Several initiatives were presented but it wouldn’t be until the early 2000s that big changes were undertaken.

The Spion Kop and West Stand were completely demolished and eventually replaced by new stands and in 2003 the East and South Stand followed suit. However, it would take the club until 2010 to finally replace the latter one while temporary structures were placed in the former and were then improved in 2011.

Around that time the pitch was also relaid and finally, in June 2019, Bloomfield Road came into the control of Simon Sadler, who bought a controlling 96.2% stake in Blackpool FC.

Tickets to watch Blackpool FC at Bloomfield Road

All tickets to watch Blackpool FC play at Bloomfield Road can be found and purchased on the club’s official website. The cheapest adult ticket in the standard area costs £20 while the most expensive ones in West Stand Blocks L & N are £28.

The club also offers season tickets for all of their fans. More information can be found on the aforementioned website.

Many Everton fans slam Jordan Pickford after Blackpool draw

Despite the continuous errors over the past few seasons, Jordan Pickford has somehow remained both Everton and England’s number one.

The 26-year-old has endured his fair share of high-profile howlers – Toffees fans certainly won’t be forgetting his last-minute clanger back in December 2018 against arch-rivals Liverpool anytime soon.

And whilst he may not have had a similar sort of mishap in Everton’s pre-season clash against Blackpool on Saturday afternoon, he certainly didn’t enjoy the greatest of games.

How big of an Everton fan are you? Can you spot Mikel Arteta from Graham Stuart? This quiz will test your knowledge, try it if you’re brave enough…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The Merseyside club were torn to pieces in the opening ten minutes, with the Seasiders romping away to a three-goal lead, Pickford offering no resistance whatsoever.

And perhaps just to underline how miserable of a game he had, after being withdrawn at half-time, Pickford watched on as Carlo Ancelotti’s side salvaged some pride and rescued a 3-3 draw.

But after seeing yet another disappointing performance from their number one, Everton fans took to Twitter to voice their frustrations.

A few Everton fans simply insisted that they need to get rid of Pickford this summer, and that they had had enough.

It’s no surprise that some Everton fans seem to have had enough with Pickford and his antics.

A goalkeeper’s main job is simply to prevent goals from going on, but not only does the England international seem to be letting the relatively easy ones in, he also has a habit of gifting the opposition ones too – in his time in the Premier League, he has made 13 errors that have directly led to goals.

As a couple of Toffees fans suggest, maybe it’s the perfect time to get rid.

Crystal Palace: Hodgson must watch out for summer target Neal Maupay on Monday

Crystal Palace welcome Brighton to Selhurst Park on Monday night for the latest edition of this feisty rivalry.

The Eagles are currently just three points ahead of their arch-rivals, who sit 12th in the Premier League with 19 points to their name after a decent start to the campaign under Graham Potter, a man who has impressed so much that the Seagulls gave him a two-year contract extension just six months after appointing him.

In Palace’s case, Roy Hodgson has led his side to tenth position, just seven points off the Champions League places while also keeping the second-most clean sheets in the top-flight with six shutouts in 16 games.

While in terms of the league table, there isn’t a huge amount between the two clubs, one man might be the difference.

Who is it?

Brighton marksman Neal Maupay will be a player that Palace need to keep an eye on this Monday.

The French forward – who was reportedly on the Eagles’ radar back in the summer transfer window – has netted six Premier League goals so far for the Seagulls following his £16m move from Brentford.

Maupay, 23, isn’t afraid to shoot having taken 3.1 attempts on goal per 90 minutes in the Premier League this term, and has two goals in his last two games after netting against Arsenal and Wolves.

Could unsettle James Tomkins and Gary Cahill

While Tomkins and Cahill have played a big part in what is statistically the division’s second-best defence, Maupay could irritate them for one reason.

His 5 foot 7 frame.

The aforementioned centre-back pairing will win their aerial duels all day long, but when faced against a nippier, more diminutive forward such as Maupay – who prefers to have the ball into feet or played through for him to run on to, given he wins just 0.8 aerial duels per game – they might struggle due to their lack of balance.

We saw last time out against Wolves how the former Brentford man only needs a second to score a goal, taking a first-time shot following a long ball over the top which nestled into the bottom left corner.

Tomkins and Cahill started the last game against Watford and kept a clean sheet, but not without their fair share of issues as Ismaila Sarr and Gerard Deulofeu both caused trouble – with no injury problems to report, we presume that the English duo will start together again against Brighton.

In other news, these Crystal Palace fans have reacted after a club stepped up their interest in Wilfried Zaha…

Boundary Park

Key Information about Boundary Park

Boundary Park is the home of Greater Manchester football club Oldham Athletic. It first opened back in 1904 and was renovated in 2014.

The historic stadium holds a capacity of just over 15,000 and comprises six stands; the George Hill Main Stand, the Zen Office Stand, the Joe Royle Stand, and the Jimmy Frizzell Stand.

A history of Boundary Park

Boundary Park originally opened in 1896 and it was first known as the Athletic Ground for the Latics first professional football club – Oldham County FC. However, the town’s first club did not last more than three years, and Oldham Athletic AFC (Pine Villa FC) took over as new tenants of the ground.

From 1904, the Latics have played all of their home games at the newly built ground. Oldham Athletic RLFC is a Rugby League club, and they moved from their previous home of Watersheddings and moved in with the Latics in 1997 where they ground shared for four years until 2001, and a second time from 2003-09. In 2009, the Latics decided that they did not want to ground share with the Rugby League club, subsequently, they moved out at the end of their season.

In April 2013, the Oldham Borough Council confirmed the clubs planning approval for the new North Stand. The proposal was for the new stand to seat 2,671 fans as well as a health and fitness suite, bar for supporters, and facilities for stadium events. The main stand in Boundary Park has not been developed to hold more spectators since the ground was built in 1904.

The record crowd at Boundary Park is 47,671 and this massive record was set in 1930 during an FA Cup tie between Oldham and Sheffield Wednesday. At the time, the stadium was not all-seater and could hold many more spectators than it does today. The grounds first artificial pitch was installed in 1986 to enhance greater income for the football club. Boundary Park is incredibly the third-highest standing stadium in the whole of England, at 509 feet above sea level.

Oldham Athletic have recently agreed a new deal to purchase Boundary Park after a court case which could have seen the club enter administration was adjourned. The club’s owner, Abdallah Lemsagam has a six-week time frame to pay off the clubs outstanding debt which is a six-figure sum.

Tickets to Watch Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park

Early bird season ticket prices for next season (20/21) stand at £270 for adults which works out to be just £11.70 per game.

Over-65s and under-21s can purchase a season ticket for a discounted £160 (students with valid ID), under-18s can buy one for £48, and under-12s can go free with a full paying adult.

Matchday tickets are available through Ticketmaster, and are priced between £10 (under-18s) to £20 (adults) – family tickets are also available for £22, and this includes one adult and one junior under-18.

Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez should reconsider prospect of Arsenal switch

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to a new report coming from El Desmarque, Arsenal are willing to fork out a sum of €42m (£35.8m) to land Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez but the player doesn’t want to go until the summer.

What’s the word, then?

It seems that the Gunners have taken interest in Zinedine Zidane’s 28-year-old player and are even willing to offer more than Atletico Madrid and Napoli reportedly already have, the same source states.

However, Florentino Perez seems to think £35.8m is not enough and is, therefore, willing to let Rodriguez stay for longer so that his price could potentially rise in the near future.

Zidane, however, is not really that fond of the player and would rather see him go.

Rodriguez himself is also against making a switch to Arsenal but when everything is said and done, this stubbornness might harm his career as a whole.

A huge risk

Rodriguez’s verdict on Arsenal’s offer is somewhat understandable.

After all, the Gunners are currently very much in shambles with Unai Emery now officially sacked and the team still going strong with their seven-game winless streak.

[ad_pod ]

But at least he could go and potentially be a star in London as opposed to rotting on the bench and never getting picked by Zidane at Real Madrid.

This season – which has also been somewhat hampered by injuries – he has only tallied 422 minutes in a total of nine games played across all competitions.

And there is certainly some quality in him still as he managed to bag one goal and one assist while he was still getting some more or less regular game time at the very beginning of the ongoing campaign.

A move away from the Spanish capital seems like a way to reignite his career and considering he’s already 28, his prime years might be slipping away too quickly.

For those reasons, it maybe wouldn’t be such a bad idea to swap Real for Arsenal and start anew at a club that is also embarking on a fresh journey themselves.

West Ham could be set to stall on a move for Chuba Akpom

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

West Ham United could be set to stall on a move for Chuba Akpom due to concerns surrounding Manuel Pellegrini and Mario Husillos, according to Football Insider.

What’s the story?

This stance comes following Football Insider’s report that the latter of these senior figures is ready to resign due to the heavy criticism he has been facing.

Akpom is said to have turned down PAOK’s offer of a contract extension, with his current deal coming to an end in the summer of 2021.

Despite this news, West Ham are not currently looking to push through a move in January, with the aforementioned situation regarding the manager and Director of Football being the main reason.

A decision must be made

This situation offers an indication that West Ham and the senior figures within the club, need to decide on their stance ahead of the January transfer window.

Winter can be an important time for a club’s season, not just because of the number of games that are played in a busy schedule, but also the fact that signings can be made.

Did he really play for us?! No West Ham fan has managed to name all of these obscure Irons signings….

If the Hammers are to get the most out of their campaign, then it can be argued that they will need a clear sense of direction when January comes. If they don’t gain better clarity, it could leave them in a bit of bother when it comes to adding new recruits.

The report offers an indication of how disruptive the current uncertainty can be, so this needs to be addressed before the January transfer window comes around.

In other news, West Ham have identified a goalkeeper target to sign.

Manchester City: Chilean youth ‘keeper Vicente Reyes says he would love future City move

Atlanta United academy ‘keeper Vicente Reyes would one day love a dream move to Manchester City, citing his idols Claudio Bravo and Ederson as huge influences on his career, according to Futbol Chileno (via Sport Witness).

Vicente Reyes, who is also a Chile U17 international, is making his way up the ranks at the tender age of 15, standing out amongst the crowd in Atlanta’s MLS academy with a bright future ahead of him.

If he were to make it to the top as a professional, given his choice of elite European sides to make a dream move across the Atlantic, it has been revealed that he would opt to sign for the current Premier League champions.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Futbol Chileno via Sport Witness, Reyes spoke about one day plying his trade in the Premier League at Eastlands, prompting him to praise his two goalkeeping idols.

“I have two special idols, Claudio Bravo and Ederson Moraes, both from Manchester City,” said Reyes.

“He’s [Bravo] a great example if I want to be a goalkeeper, because of his footwork and because he’s a good leader both on and off the pitch. He’s my role model.

“I want to play in England, that’s my dream, play in Europe in general.

“With my dad I always talk about playing in the Premier League. I would love to be a Manchester City goalkeeper like Claudio Bravo, I follow the team, they’re my favourite in the English league.”

Indeed, with Reyes so open about the fact he would love to join City in the future, and given how quickly he is rising through the ranks at Atlanta, it’s safe to say the Premier League champions could have a future star on their hands if they decide to make his dreams a reality.
