Clarke's crucial leadership test

Sydney’s semi-final will determine much about whether Michael Clarke will finish this tournament as a winner, or as a thwarted leader pondering his options

Daniel Brettig in Sydney25-Mar-20153:20

Warne helps Australia prepare for spin

Last time Australia played India in a World Cup knockout match, Michael Clarke was not the captain. The 2011 Ahmedabad quarter-final defeat to the hosts and eventual champions had Ricky Ponting in charge, and the team’s elimination was the final straw to convince him that he should no longer lead the team.Ponting had tried his very best to pull Australia through that match, shrugging off weeks of indifferent form and the aftermath of a fractured finger to make a stirring hundred. But Clarke was a harried, uncomfortable figure, very aware of his status as heir apparent three years into an awkward captain-deputy relationship with Ponting.Their partnership that day could have taken Australia to a tally beyond India’s reach, but Clarke played a skittish innings reflecting his standing as not quite the captain, and not quite the deputy. He had 8 from 19 balls when the left-arm spin of Yuvraj Singh goaded him into a stroke that was both uncharacteristic, and unlikely to result in success. Later that night Ponting led his beaten men from the field with a blank, desolate look on his face. Clarke wore the same mask, but days later would be the smiling new leader at an SCG press conference.Four years on, and Clarke again occupies an awkward place in the team. He has been out of the dressing room for much of the summer due to injury, and his primacy as the side’s leader and chief decision-maker has been largely usurped by the coach Darren Lehmann. By way of reassurance, Clarke’s friend and mentor Shane Warne joined the team for their final training session and bowled in the nets. But Warne was not clad in the team gear donned by Steve Waugh in Adelaide, nor by Warne himself in South Africa last year. This looked a unilateral appearance. So it was not a surprise to hear Clarke’s place in the team questioned once again during his pre-match media duty. Clarke listened intently to the question, then tried to bat it away. He did so in the same room where after the pool match victory over Sri Lanka he gave an unprompted critique of some of the less-glowing coverage he had received in recent weeks. It has been an uncomfortably recurring theme of the Cup – no less a voice than Ponting has reckoned Clarke should retire from ODIs at the end of the tournament.”Everybody’s entitled to their own opinion,” Clarke said when asked whether his return had disrupted team balance. “I’ve played over 200 one-dayers now for Australia, and I think my record stacks up against just about anyone. So, yeah, for me it’s about making sure I perform with the bat and also as captain of the team.”Perhaps the only thing helping Clarke ensure he does perform at the SCG on Thursday is the fact that ODI matches have changed shape to reflect many of the values that have guided his captaincy since that Ahmedabad night in 2011. The allowance for only four fielders outside the circle and the introduction of two new balls have meant that the aggressor is often rewarded, provided his is of sufficient quality, while the holding player, particularly with the ball, is exposed for his limitations. These changes, advocated by the Cricket Australia chairman Wally Edwards, no less, have not all been warmly received. India have adapted to them almost under protest, while Clarke believes that some change should be made to encourage spinners back into the game. But he agrees that his philosophy as a captain has dovetailed better with the new regime than others: hence Australia’s No. 1 ranking in the format.”I think that’s been my mindset in any form of the game, Test cricket, T20 cricket and one-day cricket,” Clarke said. “I think my captaincy style is bowling opposition teams out, and when you bat scoring runs, people say bat for time. I say bat for runs. If you make runs, hopefully you can spend the whole day there making them. We play our best when we’re trying to bowl opposition teams out.”I think our game has changed because the conditions have changed. So we’ve been able to — the Australian team has been able to adapt to the new conditions. There are probably a couple things that I’d like to see change, but I don’t think now is the right time to talk about those. I think the most important thing is the people watching are getting to see some really entertaining one-day cricket, which is great for the one-day format, and that’s not necessarily making 375 or 350 runs.”I think some of the games have been – think back to the game we played against New Zealand, a lot of low scores, some really classy bowling, the game against Pakistan was a lot tighter than probably what the scoreboard showed from some great bowling. I think right now that’s entertaining, and I think it’s probably a question for the people that watch the game as well as the people that play it.”However the SCG match pans out, the experiences of past tournaments will help. Two ICC events of recent vintage have provided Australia with plenty of lessons about how not to conduct a campaign. The petering out in 2011 and the “Walkabout” Champions Trophy of 2013 showed what can happen when the team is dysfunctional. Clarke can remember it all too well.”Experience in big games makes a difference,” he said. “I think in any sport the best balanced team has a mixture of that. It has the experience, but it also has the youth as well, and I’m really confident that our squad has that. I think every single one of those players in there has been a part of some big tournaments through their career.”You have some older players that have played in World Cups and had success in World Cups, and you’ve got some youngsters with unbelievable talent, no fear at all. I look forward to what is thrown at them tomorrow in a semi-final of the World Cup.”As with 2011, there are tensions in there somewhere, but they have not been allowed to overwhelm the team so far. Sydney’s semi-final will determine much about whether Clarke will finish this tournament as a winner, or as a thwarted leader pondering his options.

Central East denied semi-final spot after floodlight shut off

A round-up of matches played on the second day of the USACA T20 National Championship

Central East Region’s surprising run in the 2015 USACA T20 National Championship fell just short of the semi-finals in bizarre circumstances after their match against North West was called off with three overs to go as the floodlights were turned off at the Central Broward Regional Park on Saturday night in Lauderhill, Florida. The match was declared a tie, leaving Central East with two wins, a loss and a tie, and putting them behind New York and USA Development XI, who each finished with three wins and one loss in Group A.Central East were restricted to 147 in their 20 overs in the final match of the day with North West offspinner Pranay Suri taking 4 for 25, his second four-wicket haul of the tournament. Aditya Mishra struck 57 off 40 balls including ten fours to lead North West’s chase but was dismissed off the second ball of the 17th over as the score became 114 for 3. North West needed another 29 off the final three overs with two new batsmen at the crease when the match was halted. The match took place on one of the artificial pitches on a satellite field adjacent to the main stadium wicket at Central Broward Regional Park. USACA first vice-president Owen Grey responded to ESPNcricinfo on Sunday and stated in an email that “a floodlight malfunction” occurred after which the match was unable to be resumed.* The umpires reviewed Duckworth-Lewis calculations which showed North West was level with the par score after 17 overs, resulting in the tie.The game began at 6:45 pm, a 45-minute delayed start due to overlapping finishes from the previous slate of games, and the floodlights went off at 10:02 pm. Tournament rules state that in the event of a tie, a super over should determine the winner but in this instance that was not possible due to the floodlights going off. If North West had one less run, they would have qualified for the semi-finals despite a loss but Central East required a win to keep pace with New York and USA Development XI after having lost to South East on the final ball earlier in the day.North West will take on USA Development XI in the first semi-final while South East’s win over Central East guaranteed them a semi-final match against New York on Sunday. Central East were bowled out for 148, Ashhar Mehdi top-scoring with 69 off 45 balls. Steven Taylor followed up figures of 4 for 26 with 51 off 32 balls to power South East’s chase on a stadium turf wicket. Japen Patel finished unbeaten on 14 off seven balls, including a boundary off the last ball of the match, to give South East a three-wicket win.South East’s only loss in group stages came earlier in the day when New York chased down their 166 for 5 by four wickets with three balls to spare. Taylor starred with the bat in this encounter as well, cracking 72 off 38, which included two fours and seven sixes. Alex Amsterdam, coming in at No.3, powered New York’s chase with 72 off 42 balls.New York needed a victory over North East in the afternoon to have a chance at the semi-finals and they did so with a 52-run victory. New York posted 202 for 6 on the back of 55 off 35 from Akeem Dodson and 40 off 22 from Amsterdam. North East’s top four all went past 20 but no one could produce a big score to get them within striking distance of New York’s total. Karanjit Singh and Anat Patel scored 37 each, but North East came up short, finishing on 150 for 5.USA Development XI won both their matches on Saturday starting with an easy 116-run win in the morning over North East on the stadium turf wicket. 2014 USACA T20 National Championship MVP Nisarg Patel set up USA Development XI’s total of 181 for 6 with an unbeaten 92 off 48. In reply, North East were bowled out for 65 with Sai Ramesh ripping through the tail to finish with figures of 4 for 2 in two overs. In the afternoon, USA Development XI outlasted Atlantic in a high-scoring shootout to secure a 26-run win. Former USA U-19 player Mrunal Patel turned in the tournament’s first century, striking an unbeaten 111 off 60 balls, as USA Development XI surged to 208 for 5. Allrounder Adil Bhatti kept Atlantic in the hunt with 108 off 49 balls including 12 sixes but got no substantial support from his team-mates with the next best score being Charan Singh’s 18 off 21 balls. Medium pacer David Pieters took 3 for 30, including the wicket of Bhatti in the final over, as Atlantic finished on 182 for 9.In a match that wound up being crucial to deciding both teams’ chances of reaching the knockouts, North West held on for a five-run win over Central West on Saturday morning. North West grafted their way to a total of 157 before being bowled out in 19.3 overs. Mishra made 30 off 28 and was supported by Saqib Saleem’s 31 off 36.Opener Ahmed Waleed gave Central West a strong start in reply with 46 off 44 balls as they reached 88 for 1 in 12 overs before spin sparked a collapse. Legspinner Rahul Singh dismissed Waleed and Dhandapani Devarasan in the space of three balls in the 13th over to turn the tide for North West. Central West entered the final over against Suri needing 21 to win with three wickets in hand and broke it down to 14 off four balls before Suri struck with the third and fifth balls to clinch the match for North West, despite a last ball six. Suri, who claimed figures of 3 for 31, is the tournament’s leading wicket-taker after the group stages with 12 scalps.Atlantic Region defeated Central West by three wickets in the evening game on the stadium wicket to keep North East the only winless team in the group stages. After having opted to bat, Central West scratched their way to 123 for 4 in 20 overs, Devarasan top-scoring with a run-a-ball 31. Charan Singh then propelled Atlantic’s chase with 38 off 30 balls and was supported by Savan Patel who made 31. Atlantic were cruising at 69 for 1 in the ninth over before losing a flurry of wickets but they managed to recover and finish the chase with five balls to spare.*This article was updated at 17:20 GMT on Sunday, April 5 to reflect Owen Grey’s response on behalf of USACA.

Essex bolstered by Ryder, Bopara returns

ESPNcricinfo previews the match-ups for the second weekend of the Blast

Glamorgan v Essex
With a second match on Sunday, Essex will have played four matches before some teams have played two. Having lost both their matches last week Essex will be desperate to record their sixth consecutive win over Glamorgan who began their campaign with an explosive victory over Surrey. Essex’s top order, which has struggled, is bolstered by the return to fitness of Mark Pettini and Jesse Ryder, while Ravi Bopara is also back from the IPL. Jaik Mickleburgh and Dan Lawrence have been left out from last week’s squad while Tom Wesley still misses out with an injured thumb. Glamorgan have made one change to their squad with David Lloyd out with injury. Wayne Parnell still isn’t fully fit and misses out again.Hampshire v Kent
Hampshire, who are aiming for a sixth successive Finals Day appearance, have named an unchanged squad from their convincing victory over Essex last Friday. They will, however, give a late fitness test to Fidel Edwards who is suffering from a shoulder injury. Kent also won their opening night fixture, beating Sussex in a tight match and have made one change, with Adam Riley replacing the injured James Tredwell. The visitors have former Hampshire pair David Griffiths and Matt Coles in their squad.Somerset v Sussex
Somerset were one of two counties who didn’t play in the opening week and get their season underway against Sussex, who fell short in a tense run-chase against Kent on Friday. Somerset are still awaiting the arrival of Chris Gayle, who is on IPL duty, but they do have Pakistan bowler Sohail Tanvir available. Sussex have made one change to their squad from last week, with Tymal Mills replacing Steve Magoffin despite news emerging this week that he has a congenital back condition that could ultimately end his career. Jimmy Anyon, Lewis Hatchett, Matt Prior, Ajmal Shahzad and Ashar Zaidi all remain unfit.Lancashire v Durham
Lancashire, who are unbeaten in their last seven T20 matches against Durham and have won nine of their last eleven home matches against them, will be seeking to build on their last-ball victory against Leicestershire. Durham also won their opening match, beating Northamptonshire convincingly after reducing them to 41 for 5 in pursuit of 175 before the rain came. There is a possibility Lancashire could hand James Faulkner his debut after his IPL season was ended on Wednesday with Saqib Mahmood left out. Durham have not named Graham Onions, who didn’t play last week, in their squad and added Paul Coughlin and Michael Richardson.Leicestershire v Derbyshire
A big crowd is expected for Leicestershire’s first home match of the season against local rivals Derbyshire, with 4500 tickets already sold and a near sell-out expected. Derbyshire have expanded their 13-man squad from their opening night defeat against Yorkshire to 14 to include allrounder Wayne White, who is returning from injury. Nathan Rimmington, Wayne Madsen, Tony Palladino and Jonathan Clare all miss out due to injury. Neither Aadil Ali nor Angus Robson played in Leicestershire’s defeat to Lancashire last week and they have been left out of their squad this time around with Neil Pinner, who has never played a T20 match, coming in.Nottinghamshire v Yorkshire
Yorkshire, who won their opening fixture against Derbyshire last week, will be seeking their first victory in four matches against Nottinghamshire, having lost seven of the last eight meetings between the two counties. Glenn Maxwell will make his Yorkshire debut after arrivign from the IPL; Nottinghamshire will be without Alex Hales who has gone in the opposite direction to join Mumbai Indians. Yorkshire have expanded their 13-man squad to include Maxwell, while Nottinghamshire, who beat Warwickshire in their opening fixture, have replaced Hales with Brett Hutton.Warwickshire v Worcestershire
Defending champions Warwickshire will be looking to bounce back from their defeat against Nottinghamshire when they host Worcestershire, who are playing their first match of the season. Warwickshire have made one change to their squad, leaving out Keith Barker for Recordo Gordon. Worcestershire warmed up for the season on Thursday by plundering 236 for 2 against Shropshire, before conceding nearly 200 in defence. They will be without overseas signing Colin Munro, who remains at the IPL with Mumbai Indians, but still boast Sachithra Senanayake.
