Ban without inquiry surprises Rupganj chairman

Lutfar Rahman Badal, the Legends of Rupganj chairman, has said that he was surprised at the speed with which the BCB’s disciplinary committee handed him a life ban

Mohammad Isam11-Dec-2014Lutfar Rahman Badal, the Legends of Rupganj chairman, has said that he was surprised at the speed with which BCB’s disciplinary committee handed him a life ban. He said that his letter to the board president, dated November 30, concerning the standard of umpiring was not replied to, neither any investigation held.”The disciplinary committee took the decision in a matter of hours which really surprised me,” Badal told ESPNcricinfo. “First it was the CCDM [Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis] that temporarily banned me without basing their decision on any report from the match referee, which should have been the proper way. Furthermore, I think the BCB usually takes disciplinary decision after recommendations from the disciplinary committee but here it was different.”I had raised the topic of umpiring in my matches with the BCB president in a letter but those were not taken into account. I would have liked to see the BCB take those concerns seriously and investigate the matter.”But it was Lutfar’s December 3 outburst against the BCB president Nazmul Hassan and two other directors that brought on the severe sentence. In addition, Rupganj joint secretary Tarikul Islam and team manager Sabbir Ahmed received five and three-year bans for allegedly intimidating and abusing match officials. On Tuesday, the decision was taken after a meeting of the disciplinary committee, which was attended by a number of board directors, apart from the chairman Sheikh Sohel. The committee did not summon the Rupganj officials to defend their cases. They took the decision a few hours after the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) had put a temporary ban on Lutfar and Tarikul. On the same afternoon, Lutfar had apologised to all the concerned parties for his verbal attack. On December 3, after Rupganj’s Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match against Prime Bank Cricket Club Lutfar used objectionable language towards BCB directors Khaled Mahmud and Ismail Haider Mallick, and said that Hassan was aware of every “wrongdoing”. He also accused board officials of rigging league schedules and umpire appointments in his club’s matches. The outburst drew sharp criticism from the BCB directors, club officials, the players’ association and the umpires’ association. They held a press conference on December 8 demanding a ban on Lutfar.Legends of Rupganj, formerly known as Gazi Tank Cricketers, are the defending Dhaka Premier League champions.

World Cup knock-out round FAQs

A summary of how the 2015 World Cup quarterfinal venues have been allocated

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Jan-20152:06

Australia, NZ to play knock-out matches at home

Venues and dates for the four quarterfinal matches:
March 18 – SCG, Sydney
March 19 – MCG, Melbourne
March 20 – Adelaide Oval, Adelaide
March 21 – Westpac Stadium, Wellington
Criteria for allocation of quarterfinal venues among Pool A teams:
Preference for the two host teams, followed by seedings based on ICC team rankings. Hence, if Australia and New Zealand make it to the top four of Pool A, they will play their quarterfinal matches in Adelaide and Wellington respectively. What about the other two qualifiers from Pool A?
The venue allocation for the quarterfinals for the two teams other than the hosts is based on the ICC ODI rankings. In case Sri Lanka, ranked fourth, and England, ranked fifth, qualify, then they will play their quarter-finals in Sydney and Melbourne respectively. What happens if one of the top-four seeded teams do not qualify?
In the instance that one of those teams do not make it to the top four, the team that takes its place on the points table will play at the respective venue. For example, if Scotland qualify in place of England, then Scotland’s quarterfinal match will be played at the MCG. Similarly, if Bangladesh qualify in place of New Zealand, the former’s quarterfinal match will be in Wellington. What happens if a host team and a seeded team do not qualify?
If a host team and a seeded team do not finish in the top four, the venues will depend on the points tally of the two teams that qualify in their place and the schedule of the quarterfinals. The team with more points among the two unseeded qualifiers will play the quarterfinal that is scheduled first.Consider a scenario where New Zealand [a host team] and Sri Lanka [a seeded team] do not finish in the top four, and the Pool A table features Bangladesh and Afghanistan in third and fourth place respectively. As Bangladesh have more points than Afghanistan, they will play in Sydney on March 18, which is scheduled to be the first of the four quarterfinals, and Afghanistan will play in Wellington on March 21.What happens to qualifying teams from Pool B?
Their quarterfinal venues will depend on the eventual points tally in Pool B and the points tally of teams in Pool A. The quarterfinal line-up is: A1 v B4, A2 v B3, A3 v B2, A4 v B1. So if South Africa top Pool B [B1] and Sri Lanka finish fourth among the qualifiers from Pool A [A4], then South Africa will play Sri Lanka in Sydney. Similarly, if Australia finish third in Pool A [A3] and India finish second in Pool B [B2], the quarterfinal between the two teams will be played in Adelaide.

'Don't want to peak too early' – Richardson

West Indies team manager, Richie Richardson, was disappointed with the side’s nine-wicket defeat to England in the warm-up match but stressed it was not a reflection of their preparations

George Dobell at the SCG09-Feb-2015If West Indies’ aim really was “not to peak too early” as the team manager, Richie Richardson suggested, they can look back on their crushing defeat at the SCG with a sense of a mission accomplished.Beaten by nine wickets in a game that barely lasted 50 overs in its entirety, it is true that West Indies cannot sink much lower. But with only one more warm-up match to go – they play Scotland here on Thursday – until they face Ireland in their opening World Cup match, they are running out of time to find their form and confidence. But Richardson, left to perform media duties in an almost impossible situation, was certainly not going to express any sign of panic. While admitting to some “shock” over the standard of performance, he insisted it was not a true reflection of the state of the side.”It wasn’t a very good start,” he said with beautiful understatement. “But it’s not about the start; it’s about the finish. We don’t want to peak too early.”This performance tonight is no reflection of how we’ve been training or anything about the mood in the camp. We have worked really hard. It is just very strange that England got the better of us. It’s just one of those things. We have prepared well.”Of course we are unhappy with the performance. So we will review, we will reassess and we will come back. But if you had seen us training, you would have seen a bunch of really happy guys, who are training hard and did everything they had to do.”So this performance came as a shock. I don’t have explanations because I didn’t expect it.”Asked why Chris Gayle, who was dismissed first ball, did not field, Richardson replied: “He is our most senior player. We want to preserve him as much as possible. He played football with the guys this morning.”The alarm that caused an evacuation of the SCG moments after might have nothing to do with the players – it was a minor issue in the kitchens – but as a metaphor for their state of West Indies side, it was remarkably accurate.

Andrew Ellis extends Canterbury dominance

A round-up of the Plunkett Shield matches that ended on March 20, 2015

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Mar-2015

A brisk century from Andrew Ellis in the first innings and a rapid one from Neil Broom in the second were sown together by Matt Henry’s four wicket burst to cement Canterbury atop the Plunkett Shield table. They beat Central Districts by 183 runs and stretched the lead from Auckland, their closest rivals in the tournament, by 27 points.Though they were put in, Canterbury got a strong foundation from Ronnie Hira’s 88 off 80 balls. Ellis and Henry Nicholls (74) came together at 218 for 4 and added 96 more runs. Central Districts may have hoped for the tail to pose lesser resistance but Henry strode out at No. 9 and blasted 46 off 27 for the total to balloon to 463 in 106.3 overs. The reply was similar, and strong. Ben Smith struck 80 at the top of the order, Tom Bruce made an unbeaten 112 and Seth Rance struck a run-a-ball 40 at No. 10. Only the rest of the lower order was successfully muted and Central Districts finished at 350. Ellis made his match better with 4 for 75 from 20 overs from his medium pace.A lead of 113 gave Canterbury the freedom they needed to switch from first-class to List A mode. Broom hammered 16 fours and a six during his 123 off 149 balls and Ellis walloped 43 off 23 with three sixes and four fours as they racked up 305 runs at 5.31 per over. A target of 419 went considerably beyond Central Districts’ reach when only Will Young, with 75, and Greg Hay, with 46, were the major contributors. Henry took out four of the top-five, including the two top-scorers to finish with 4 for 74 from his 20 overs.Wellington put in an all-round performance to beat Auckland by 213 runs at the Colin Maiden Park, despite conceding an innings lead. A second-innings ton from Michael Papps, and six scalps apiece from Matt McEwan and Andy McKay were the keys to their win over the home team.Papps struck 21 fours and one six in his 265-ball 171, which was well supported by fifties from Stephen Murdoch (51), Michael Pollard (55) and James Franklin (56*). It helped in getting Wellington to 387 for 5 in their second innings after they resumed batting from an overnight score of 263 for 3.Wellington’s fast-bowling pair of McEwan and McKay, and offspinner Jeetan Patel each picked up three wickets, as they bundled out Auckland for just 168 in 68 overs.Auckland, who chose to field on the first day, conceded 344 runs to Wellington in their first innings. Fifties from Deepak Joon (60), Brandy Barnett (65) and a late half-century from McEwan (52 off 68), who shared an 110-run eight wicket stand with Barnett, helped them past 300.Auckland’s right-arm quick Lachie Ferguson picked up 4 for 46, his best innings bowling figures. In reply, Auckland declared on 350 for 7, with a slender six-run lead. Jeet Raval and Colin Munro both made centuries and shared a 201-run stand for the third wicket. Raval was caught behind off McEwan after striking 21 fours in his 266-ball 148, while Munro, who also got out in the same fashion, hit 17 fours and 4 sixes for his 125-ball 108.
