Ned Eckersley’s unbeaten 99 enabled Leicestershire to keep alive their hopes of avoiding a heavy defeat by Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl.Eckersley went to the brink of his third first-class century in an innings spread over 170 balls and which has so far including 17 boundaries as Hampshire were also frustrated by the weather.Bad light and rain wiped 24 overs from the third day’s allocation as Leicestershire fought tenaciously to reach 182 for five – still trailing by 129 – and take a one-sided match into a fourth day.Leicestershire began their second innings needing 312 to make Hampshire bat a second time and with the pitch still offering help to the pace bowlers and, later, to the spin of Danny Briggs.Sean Ervine made the first breakthrough for Hampshire when he pinned Michael Thornely leg before wicket for 28 but it was their only success before the lunch interval.Niall O’Brien batted almost 28 overs for his 17 before James Vince at second slip clutched a smart catch off Chris Wood and there was worse to follow for Leicestershire when their captain Ramnaresh Sarwan soon followed O’Brien to the pavilion.Sarwan managed only three before driving James Tomlinson, who took four for 23 in the first innings, to point where Michael Carberry held the catch.Leicestershire slumped to 95 for 4 when Joshua Cobb was held by Vince’s reflex catch at short leg and only then did a minor recovery begin, inspired by Eckersley. With Matthew Boyce as his fifth wicket partner, Eckersley dominated a stand of 64 in 26 overs and for the first time in two days in the field Hampshire were struggling to make the best of their dominance.Briggs eventually ended the partnership when Boyce, who had made 30, drove to Wood at backward point to leave Leicestershire on 159 for five.Shiv Thakor then supported Eckersley until the close although much depends on the pair if Hampshire are to be denied an opening-fixture victory after being on top for so long.

Chapple inspires miraculous victory

Glamorgan imploded in spectator style when in sight of victory on an afternoon of astonishing drama that saw Glen Chapple rally Lancashire to victory

Paul Edwards at Colwyn Bay03-May-2013Lancashire 123 (Glover 3-29, Hogan 3-31) and 272 (Katich 65, Glover 3-41) beat Glamorgan 242 (Goodwin 69, Kerrigan 4-48) and 139 (Kerrigan 5-32, Chapple 4-64) by 14 runs
ScorecardGlen Chapple, so often Lancashire’s hero, took four wickets to inspire a miraculous victory•PA Photos

A glance at the scorecard for this match will do little to convey the intricacy of the contest over three days or the astonishing drama that unfolded on Friday evening when Glamorgan seemed to be progressing to what would have been a deserved victory in facile fashion, only to implode in spectacular style when within sight of 20 points.Needing to score 154 in a maximum of 47 overs on the third evening, Glamorgan cruised to 94 for 2 in 18.2 overs before losing the remainder of their wickets for 45 runs in 19.2 overs.Destroyer-in-chief was Glen Chapple, who once again proved that age is just a number when you have skill and core fitness in abundance. He had been roughly treated early in the innings yet he returned to take four wickets including top scorer Will Bragg for 61. Accurate and penetrative, Chapple is always at the batsmen, but so is Simon Kerrigan, the sorcerer’s apprentice. Bowling from the Penrhyn Avenue End, Kerrigan contained the batsmen and among his five wickets was the vital scalp of Murray Goodwin, caught by Simon Katich for 11 when attempting a cut.It was Kerrigan who had last man Michael Hogan spectacularly caught by a leaping Ashwell Prince on the long-off boundary as Hogan sought to score the 15 runs his team needed in something like three blows. That wicket sparked joyous scenes in front of the Colwyn Bay pavilion by Chapple and his players who were celebrating their first Championship win in 11 matches, a run stretching back to last June’s triumph on a gloomy Saturday evening at Chester-le-Street.But at first it had been the Glamorgan batsmen who were racing towards victory. Spectators settling down after tea expected the siege of Stalingrad; instead they got the Battle of M’boto Gorge from Blackadder Goes Forth. Wallace’s openers seemingly had little truck with arguments suggesting cautious accumulation was the best policy. Ben Wright and Will Bragg garnered 38 runs off the first 27 balls of the innings, a result of some over-pitched bowling, a few edges and a fast outfield, before Wright cut James Anderson low to Karl Brown in the gully. It seemed both teams had plans for Saturday. Now Lancashire’s players may be nursing the odd sore head while Glamorgan’s will be wondering where it all went wrong.”That win’s right up there with any we have achieved over the last two years,” Chapple said. “It’s a terrific victory and a great boost for the lads who have worked hard. It’s been a difficult week for us in some ways because we have not played our best cricket but we hung on and kept believing. We’ve come away with a victory we’ll remember for a long time.”But as Glamorgan discovered to their cost, getting into a winning position is one thing; sealing the victory – “bringing home the bread” as they call it in parts of Manchester – is very much another. At 12.22pm on the third day of this match Simon Katich essayed a drive at Glamorgan seamer John Glover but only succeeded in edging the ball to wicketkeeper Mark Wallace. His departure for a well-made, fighting 65 left Lancashire on 164 for 7 in their second innings and their lead was a piffling 45. It seemed Glamorgan were on their way to consecutive victories. Then again, this is cricket, a game which delights in taking the absurdly improbable and making it so. First Chapple and Gareth Cross added 42 for the eighth wicket, Chapple whacking Hogan into the back garden of a nearby house during his innings of 26. Then, when Chapple had holed out at mid-on off Mike Reed when the lead was 89, Kyle Hogg joined Cross, who was himself playing on the ground of the club he has represented in the Liverpool competition for some years. Together, these Lancastrians put on a further 63 runs with a mixture of shrewd aggression and unsparing vigilance.Rarely has Cross, a naturally aggressive batsman, played with more responsibility than he did during his 143-minute innings of 26; it took a fine two-handed diving catch by Dean Cosker to remove him. One run later Hogg gave Glover his third wicket when he stretched to drive and trudged off having made 47, yet another reminder of a frequently unfulfilled talent. All the same Lancashire’s lead was 153. It was, as they say, game on.The first session of the day had been as well contested and involving as its predecessors. Lancastrian hopes that Jimmy Anderson would frustrate the Glamorgan bowlers in the classic manner of the specialist nightwatchman were quickly demolished when the England batsman was beaten all ends up by Jim Allenby in the third over of the day when only a single run had been added to the overnight total. But likewise, Welsh fancies that the visitors’ batting would disintegrate like candyfloss in a high wind were similarly unfounded. Instead Katich and Steven Croft batted with busy, acquisitive competence to add 49 runs in fifteen overs before both batsmen perished caught behind attempting to drive in the space of three overs. Croft was the first to go, playing loosely at Reed, then Glover took the key wicket of Katich when he drove in a flurry of dust and footholds and Tim Robinson decided he had edged the ball. Not everyone was convinced but Katich trooped silently off. Never walk, never complain. He had made 65, an innings which had certainly kept his side in the game. As things turned out, it played a large part in winning it.

Jorge, Lucas Santos, Bruno Méndez, Rakitic… O vaivém desta quarta

MatériaMais Notícias

A quarta-feira teve movimentos importantes no vaivém.

A saída do Santiago Bernabéu vai ganhando força.

PERTO DO PEIXE?

URUGUAIO NO TIMÃO

PERDEU A PACIÊNCIA

NOME NO RADAR

Bresnan, Swann elbow their way back

The ECB’s elbow surgeon has earned his fee after both Tim Bresnan and Graeme Swann returned to England’s Test squad for the opening match of the season against New Zealand at Lord’s

Andrew McGlashan11-May-2013The ECB’s elbow surgeon has earned his fee after both Tim Bresnan and Graeme Swann returned to England’s Test squad for the opening match of the season against New Zealand, at Lord’s, following their successful operations in the first part of the year. The pair both played their previous Tests in Nagpur during December. Bresnan then went for elbow surgery after the one-day series in India while Swann had his in March after being ruled out of the series in New Zealand.Bresnan is the fourth pace bowler in a 12-man squad alongside the incumbent trio of James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Steven Finn while Graham Onions, who is playing for England Lions this week and was on tour in New Zealand, misses out. Although unlikely that he will make the starting XI, Bresnan could yet force his way past Finn whose form for Middlesex has not been entirely convincing early in the season. As the impact of his elbow problem took full effect, Bresnan’s Test form tailed off badly last year and he has taken two wickets in his last four matches at 210 apiece. However, he has started the season promisingly for Yorkshire with 11 wickets at 27.63 and reports are that his pace is back to somewhere near 2011 levels.Geoff Miller, the national selectors, said: “Both Graeme Swann and Tim Bresnan have worked hard to regain fitness following elbow surgery and have demonstrated through their performances for their counties that they are ready for the challenge of international cricket.”Tim Bresnan’s early-season form has been enough to convince the selectors he is ready to return•Getty Images

The other players who were on the most recent tour but not required for the opening Test are Chris Woakes, James Tredwell and Monty Panesar, while Kevin Pietersen was ruled out of this series and the Champions Trophy earlier in the month. As expected, Jonny Bairstow retains his place as Pietersen’s replacement in the middle order, having been drafted in under tough circumstances in Auckland after just one first-class innings, against India in Mumbai, since last September. His twin failures were predictable, and understandable, but he has impressed at the start of this season for Yorkshire and has done enough to ward off his nearest challengers.Bairstow will also have fond memories of Lord’s, the scene of his Test debut against West Indies last year and also his most convincing Test performance, when he made 95 and 54 against South Africa after, again, being an understudy for Pietersen. His technique has, at times, been picked apart at Test level but that is a rite of passage for young player.England needed a monumental final-day rearguard to escape New Zealand with a 0-0 draw – Matt Prior, Ian Bell and Broad being to the fore – and that indifferent performance in a series they were expected to dominate ensured there would be no resting or rotating of key players for this series despite it being at the start of a hectic season.”We will need to improve significantly on our performances in the recent Test series against them if we are to start the international summer on a positive note,” Miller said. “This series provides a good opportunity for the players to show that they have learnt from the experiences over the winter.”England squad Alastair Cook (capt), Nick Compton, Jonathan Trott, Ian Bell, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Matt Prior, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, Steven Finn, James Anderson, Tim Bresnan

Srinivasan told to 'stay away' from inquiry

IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla has said the decisions of the three-man commission looking into corruption complaints in the IPL must be directly implemented, and not presented before the general body of the BCCI

N Srinivasan’s position as BCCI president, so solid all through the spot-fixing crisis and the arrest of his son-in-law on betting charges, appeared to wobble on Wednesday as the senior politicians on the board began speaking out on the issue. The most significant comment came from IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla after meeting with BCCI vice-president and disciplinary committee member Arun Jaitley: Srinivasan, they had decided, must “stay away” from the inquiry commission set up by the BCCI to look into the fixing and betting issues.Responding shortly after, Srinivasan said Shukla’s statement reiterated his own stand. “He has very clearly clarified that what he says is that the commission has been appointed and I should dissociate myself from the procedure as stated. He has reiterated what I stated in the press conference in Kolkata…that I have nothing to do with the committee.”Shukla did not clarify what he meant by “stay away,” but he did say they did not specifically mean that Srinivasan must stand down from his position. “He is an elected president and he says he has done nothing. That is his view,” Shukla said. “We would want that he stay away during the investigation procedure and have suggested to him that he do so. The image of the BCCI and of Indian cricket has been very badly affected by these events.”Shukla’s statement, which he repeated almost verbatim a couple of hours later, also said that the decisions of the three-man commission must be directly implemented, and not presented before the general body of the BCCI. It was important the investigation was “independent and that the persons responsible, no matter how they big they may be, are severely punished.”The inquiry commission had originally meant to comprise two BCCI officials and an independent member, but Shukla said it had been altered to assert its independence by including two judges and a single member from the board, in this case its secretary Sanjay Jagdale. The commission’s remit was widened to look into India Cements, the owners of Chennai Super Kings, apart from Gurunath Meiyappan, the Super Kings official arrested on charges of betting, and Jaipur IPL Pvt Ltd, the owners of Rajasthan Royals, three of whose players – Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan – were arrested on allegations of spot-fixing.The growing political pressure was also signalled by India’s sports ministry, which issued a statement calling for Srinivasan’s resignation. “The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has observed with considerable disquiet, the reports about match & spot fixing in cricket,” the statement read. “BCCI is inquiring into allegations of match and spot fixing. As there is a conflict of interest in this inquiry, therefore BCCI President should tender his resignation on moral grounds, pending the outcome of the inquiry.”Adding to the voices was former BCCI and ICC president Sharad Pawar, also a minister in the federal government, who backed another past president Shashank Manohar’s call for all IPL 2013 matches to be investigated by an external agency.”The entire issue should be referred to the home ministry and it should investigate all IPL matches,” Pawar said. “Shashank Manohar’s suggestion is correct. There should be a detailed investigation, not just one game, [but] all games should be looked at.”Pawar also said such a crisis “never happened” when he was in charge of the BCCI. He felt it was up to Srinivasan to decide whether he should resign, but when asked if he would have stepped down if he had been in Srinivasan’s position, he said, “If I had been there I would not have allowed these type of things.”Pawar was the board president, and Srinivasan the treasurer, when the BCCI had allowed India Cements, controlled by Srinivasan and his family, to bid for an IPL franchise in 2008. In the board’s opinion at that time, it did not amount to a conflict of interest but Pawar advised caution in the future.”In 2008, we had taken legal opinion and we got a considered view that there is no conflict,” Pawar said. “In that situation, when we discussed it in the office bearers’ meeting, it was cleared. But henceforth, we have to be very careful.”
