Kirsten sees broader landscape from NZ series

While not the best preparation for series against Pakistan and India, Gary Kirsten will again use New Zealand as guinea pigs for his master plan

Gary Kirsten’s first away tour in charge of South Africa was to New Zealand earlier this year. It was an opportunity to claim the world No. 1 ranking – which would have required a 3-0 series sweep – but Kirsten had other things to think about. For him, it was the time to entrench his philosophy away from the pressures of a prying home media and parochial fans. The trip was the first of three major blocks of time on the road in 2012. The two to come, against England and Australia, would require a certain robustness. Kirsten used New Zealand to toughen the team up by being softer than anyone would have expected. While they prepared for the Test series, he ran a marathon. After they won in Hamilton with days to spare, he encouraged them to enjoy New Zealand’s natural wonders. The South African squad went to Lake Taupo and the Waitomo Caves. Previously they spent free time holed up in soulless hotel rooms playing video games – ask Mark Boucher and Herschelle Gibbs who once boasted that they spent 13 hours doing exactly that. Kirsten opened doors other South African management ignored.Allan Donald was sent home before the final match, to allow him time off in what was dubbed “a heavy year of travel”. It was in that same fixture that South Africa were troubled – by an injury to Jacques Kallis, the resilience of Kane Williamson and Kruger van Wyk and the weather – but it was also one where they came out strongest, not in result terms but in character.Kirsten said so himself. He was pleased with the way the then-fringe player JP Duminy who had to step in to Kallis’ place scored a century. He was equally satisfied with the coming of age of Morne Morkel who took all six New Zealand wickets by relying on control as much as aggression. “There’s a real sense of team-ness,” Kirsten said. “We’ve taken the steps we needed to be able to confront England.”New Zealand was the blank canvas. Once South Africa got to England they had intricate plans drawn and when they reached Australia those plans were coloured in. So far, that exercise has paid off despite the changes that have been made to the Test XI because the broad approach has remained the same: prepare meticulously, don’t work harder than is necessary and be ready to make big plays.Having got all of that right, they face New Zealand again; and again the opposition will be used to plan for the year ahead. “We will play 10 Test matches in 2013 and New Zealand is an important stepping stone,” Kirsten said. Although a much lighter year, especially in terms of travel, South Africa have home and away (most probably in the UAE) series against Pakistan and then host India. The No. 1 ranking will probably not be at risk of being snatched away but both teams from the sub-continent will pose a different challenge to what South Africa have handled over the last 12 months. Technically and tactically, New Zealand are not the right guinea pigs to prepare them but in terms of match practice and habit-forming, they will do as well as anyone else.Kirsten believes those two factors are the basis for South Africa’s string of victories and hopes to continue developing them in the upcoming series. “The success of our team in 2012 was that we remained humble in our play,” he said. “We didn’t take any situation or any team for granted. We made sure that our preparation was spot on and that when we got into Test match time, we set up solid foundations to give ourselves the best chance of success.”They view the upcoming series against New Zealand as part of a broader landscape. Being complacent will not be an option, neither will being arrogant, even though South Africa are the clear favourites. “We take every match we play representing the badge very seriously,” Kirsten said. Evidence of that is in the training schedule: South Africa have five practices lined up before the match starts on January 2, many more than usual. It may be because a series against New Zealand gives South Africa the opportunity to improve their record at home. South Africa last lost an away Test five series ago in February 2010 in Kolkata but they have lost a match at home in every one of the last five series they’ve played there. The previous time they went unscathed was against Bangladesh in 2008/09.But Kirsten does not see it that way. “The guys look proudly at their away record. The success of this team is based what we do every day so whether we are home or away, doesn’t matter.” It’s a cold, clinical explanation and one New Zealand may bear the brunt of.

Will a crowd show up for weaker Australia?

With a depleted Australian side, and dwindling crowds at ODI matches in the country, the upcoming series may further struggle to bring in the crowds

Brydon Coverdale10-Jan-2013

As two years ago, Sri Lanka will expect a large ex-pat crowd to support them in the first ODI at the MCG•Associated Press

Once upon a time, the one-day international tri-series was a highlight of Australia’s cricket summer. You need only catch a World Series Classics replay on Fox Sports to be reminded that the stands were usually heaving with scantily-clad men and women, kids holding home-made banners, and if it’s a match from the early 1980s, terry-towelling hats. Tony Greig and Bill Lawry would be calling the action with such fervour that you’d think each game had the World Cup riding on it.How times change. The triangular series is gone, although it was resurrected last summer with India and Sri Lanka in the country, and the crowds don’t flock to 50-over cricket in anything like the numbers they used to. Twenty20 internationals and the Big Bash League have been brought in with the aim of attracting the younger fans, Test cricket remains the premier format, and one-day internationals are left searching for relevance. It is into this environment that an Australian outfit led by George Bailey and lacking drawcards like David Warner and Shane Watson will venture on Friday, taking on Sri Lanka in a series that two years from the next World Cup, has little riding on it. The broadcasters, Channel Nine, have voiced their displeasure at the lack of big names in Australia’s side, although they might change their tune if Aaron Finch tees off on debut.”I can probably understand it coming from Channel Nine,” Bailey said in Melbourne on Thursday. “I think they’re about to go into negotiations for the TV rights. I think that was a pretty tactical move to try to talk down one-day cricket and what the Australian team’s putting out. But it’s still called the Australian cricket team.”On Friday, the Channel Nine cameramen will do their best to focus on the most densely populated stands at the MCG, but there will be huge numbers of empty seats as well. When Australia and Sri Lanka met at the MCG in a one-day game earlier this year the crowd was approximately 29,000, while only 19,000 turned up when they played at the same venue the summer before. By contrast, the BBL Melbourne derby attracted 46,000 fans last weekend.”I might have a bit of a left-field view but I think the way sport is shown on TV now is so good and you get so much information thrown at you that the better it gets delivered to your couch, the less reasons there are to leave and watch it at a ground,” Bailey said. “Big Bash is popular because it goes for three hours and it fits in nicely. There’s no doubt one-day cricket takes a bit longer, and I think Test matches are becoming a real event in themselves.”It’s as much about the spectacle as the event itself and the cricket. One-day cricket, as far as crowds go, will be challenged at different times. But I still think the actual cricket itself is very good. There is always going to be a huge element of luck in T20 and I think Test cricket will always be the ultimate test, and I think one-day cricket certainly sits nicely in the middle of those two.”If the last couple of ODIs between the sides at the MCG are any indication, the Melbourne crowd will feature plenty of Sri Lankan supporters from the city’s large ex-pat population. Despite the format’s battling status in Australia, 50-over cricket remains immensely popular in Sri Lanka, and the team’s captain Mahela Jayawardene said he was confident that if the series started well, it would find an audience.”There’s been a lot of cricket played in the summer, and West Indies are coming, there is the Big Bash,” Jayawardene said. “But I think there’s certainly a lot of interest in world cricket for the 50-over game. For players it will still be exciting, trying to push yourself, but once you play a few good games [the fans] will get into it. I think it’s all about how the series is going to start and how exciting it is going to be.”We’ve got a really big appetite for 50-over cricket [in Sri Lanka]. I think that’s something that drives the national team a lot. They [the Sri Lankan public] enjoy their one-day cricket and T20 cricket a lot more than Test cricket. We don’t get big crowds for our Test matches … but in one-day cricket they definitely get behind the team, they have a good time and enjoy their one-day cricket.”These five matches will also be the first in Australia to be held under new ICC rules that, among other things, prevent captains from placing any more than four fieldsmen outside the circle at any time. The rules aren’t quite as radical as the split-innings experiment Australia trialed in the Ryobi Cup last summer but the game’s governing bodies hope they will lead to more exciting ODIs as the cricket world builds towards the 2015 World Cup.”The rule changes are going to be interesting. We’ve had them for a couple of years at the domestic level,” Bailey said. “My only concern with those is not to continue to make them too batter friendly. I don’t necessarily think higher-scoring games become better games of cricket. An even contest between bat and ball still provides the best games of cricket. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the international players adapt.”I think four [fielders] out has challenged the spinners at a domestic level, but I’ve also seen the best spinners adapt pretty well and still find ways to dominate the game or contribute really well in games. I like the fact that bowlers do get a second bouncer. I like the fact that that leaves a bit more uncertainty in the over. I think they’re interesting rule changes. Anything that provides a little bit of uncertainty, even to make captains or teams think a little bit more on their feet, are good changes for the game.”

Seamers lead New Zealand to big win

New Zealand, led by their seamers, began their Super Six stage with a comprehensive eight-wicket win over Sri Lanka at the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai

New Zealand began their Super Six campaign with a comprehensive eight-wicket win over Sri Lanka at the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai. Their seamers set the stage for a big win after Sri Lanka were put in to bat and were dismissed for 103 in 42 overs. In four matches, this is the third time New Zealand have dismissed their opposition for a low score, after bowling South Africa out for 170 and Pakistan for 104 in their first two matches. New Zealand now have four points, after carrying forward two points from the first stage.Opening bowlers Sian Ruck and Lea Tahuhu shared seven wickets between them and conceded merely 43 runs in their 20 overs. Nicola Browne, Morna Nielsen and Frances Mackay also kept the Sri Lankan batsmen under pressure, with Browne and Mackay being the most expensive bowlers at three per over. The New Zealand seamers rocked and choked the Sri Lankan batsmen, making use of the slightly moist conditions in the morning. Ruck and Tahuhu bowled in tandem; Ruck swung the ball without giving any room to the batsmen and Tahuhu made them uncomfortable with her pace and bounce.Tahuhu struck with her first ball, cleaning up Yasoda Mendis, who had played big knocks in Sri Lanka’s two victories in the first round. Lanka were pushed to the back foot with that as their runs dried up for the next few overs. Deepika Rasangika broke a few shackles when she loosened up for three consecutive fours on both sides of the pitch in Tahuhu’s third over. Chamari Atapattu, on the other hand, looked out of sorts, not able to open her account for 24 balls and was bowled by Ruck in the next over. Before Rasangika could swing her arms again, she was yorked by Tahuhu for 20. It soon became three wickets in three overs when the captain Shashikala Siriwardene flashed hard outside the off stump and Katie Perkins took a diving catch to her left at point, leaving Sri Lanka at 23 for 4.What followed was a drought of runs for Sri Lanka. They managed only three runs in the next six overs, which included four maidens – three alone from Ruck.Dilani Manodara and Sandamali Dolawatte faced roughed up by the seamers but they survived and took the score past 50 in the 22nd over. They could have been in a worse situation had the wicketkeeper Rachel Priest not dropped Dolawatte off Browne in the 18th over and not missed Manodara’s stumping in the 21st over.Manodara helped her team pick up the pace a little bit, driving and cutting Browne and left-arm orthodox Morna Nielsen for boundaries in consecutive overs. But the partnership was ended soon, when Tahuhu came back for her second spell and made Dolawatte give another catch to Perkins.Eshani Kaushalya joined Manodara and had made only two runs when she called for a quick single after driving to mid-off but was run-out by the time she was sent back. Sri Lanka were struggling at 74 for 6 and Manodara eased some nerves again, taking the score from 74 to 86 in two overs. Offspinner Mackay ended her innings when a bit of extra bounce got the ball to touch her bat and fall into Priest’s gloves. Weerakkody also edged one to Priest in the next over off Ruck, who finished with figures of 3 for 16 from her 10 overs.Mackay and Tahuhu picked the last two wickets, restricting Sri Lanka to a modest total of 103. Tahuhu picked four wickets and bowled two maidens, and her economy in the tournament now stands at a parsimonious 2.94 from 35 overs.Chasing 104, the New Zealand openers provided a strong start with a 71-run stand in 15 overs. Mackay started the innings with a firm cover drive for four off the first ball. She and Suzie Bates, the leading run-scorer in the World Cup so far, batted in good batting conditions under the sun. Bates struck six boundaries, driving and pulling the Sri Lankan bowlers during a knock of 37. Inoka Ranaweera provided some consolation for Sri Lanka, avoiding a 10-wicket loss. She struck twice in her third over, first getting Bates caught by Manodara behind the stumps and then catching Amy Satterthwaite off her own bowling. Sophie Devine made the job easier for New Zealand with a quickfire 29, sealing the win with a six in the 23rd over.

Dhawan flattens Australia with fastest debut century

Shikhar Dhawan stroked his way to a breathtaking century, its 85-ball duration the swiftest ever by a Test debutant

The Report by Daniel Brettig16-Mar-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsShikhar Dhawan’s century was the fastest by a Test debutant•BCCI

Shikhar Dhawan could possibly have been out before he had faced a ball in Test matches. The first delivery of the innings slipped out of Mitchell Starc’s hand and landed on the stumps with the debutant out of his ground at the non-striker’s end. There was no appeal, but if made it would have sent many running for the law book and coming back with varying interpretations of two laws: mankading and dead ball.Dhawan, though, felt he was out, and took full advantage of what he felt was Australian generosity with a breathtaking century, its 85-ball duration the swiftest ever by a Test debutant. By the close he was still there on a commanding 185, looking utterly impassable while gathering runs with the kind of rare ease that invoked memories of Mark Waugh’s debut against England at Adelaide Oval in 1991.*Australia’s tally of 408 had been swelled by Mitchell Starc’s 99, but it was made to look laughably puny by how Dhawan set about his task in the company of the neat and tidy M Vijay. They formed a beautifully balanced union that did not take long to become plainly disdainful of the visiting bowlers, and by the close it was comfortably India’s best opening stand against Australia. On the way to what was also the highest total by an Indian debutant, Dhawan’s stroke range was awe-inspiring, no fewer than 33 fours and two sixes streaming from his bat to all parts of the PCA ground. He was most savage through cover, piercing gaps no matter how many fielders Michael Clarke employed to patrol the region. In doing so, Dhawan laid waste to a touring attack that should have been feeling quite haughty about prolonging Australia’s innings on the third morning. The worst punishment was saved for Moises Henriques, Nathan Lyon and most of all Xavier Doherty, who in one over conceded an eye-popping 18, all to Dhawan’s impudent blade.Among the liberties taken in that over was a reverse sweep, conveying just how little Dhawan thought of the visiting spin bowlers. At the age of 27, Dhawan had been made to wait 81 first-class matches, 5679 runs and 16 centuries for this chance, coming in at the expense of Virender Sehwag. The flourish with which Dhawan took it was supreme, and indicated that India have not given up hope of forcing a victory over the remaining two days.Vijay meanwhile constructed another innings entirely suitable to the occasion, settling in quietly and safely in Dhawan’s slipstream but never becoming so tied down as to suggest the Australians had him covered. He too attacked the slow bowlers for a pair of sixes, and it was possible to imagine India have found an opening partnership to last for some time.Clarke exhausted all of the bowling options except his own, though this is at least partly to spare his problematic back. At no point were his bowlers able to deliver spells consistent enough to create pressure, despite the fact that both Peter Siddle and Mitchell Starc extracted reverse swing and there was enough bounce and spin for Lyon, Doherty and Steven Smith. Most of all Australia missed James Pattinson, their most dangerous bowler in the first two Tests and an absentee here for punitive disciplinary reasons. Mitchell Johnson, another suspended bowler, has enjoyed success on this ground in the past, and it is difficult to imagine Clarke not wondering who else he might have called upon had team management not chosen to rule out four players for failing to follow the instructions of management.Only once did Dhawan give the ghost of a chance, a thick edge on 94 flying through the hands of Phillip Hughes in the gully from Peter Siddle’s bowling. The Australians might have had some inkling of how swiftly the runs might flow when India batted after watching their own tail wag furiously. Starc assembled a brave 99, Smith managed 92, and in all 157 runs were added for the final three wickets. For most of his innings Starc played nervelessly, hitting with power and pushing through gaps with finesse, while also defending when necessary. But he tightened up noticeably with one run to get for a hundred, beaten twice outside off stump by Ishant Sharma then edging an attempted drive behind after MS Dhoni brought the field in.In that moment Australia were denied their first centurion at No. 9 since Ray Lindwall in 1946-47, and a rare chance to feel a rush of shared jubilation on this tour. So even during a session in which India were dominated, the hosts still managed to deny the tourists a feeling of achievement.Smith’s innings reached a similarly flat conclusion after he had also played with great assurance at No. 5, demonstrating a steadier approach and straighter bat than he had shown in his earlier Test match appearances in 2010 and 2011. It was a chanceless innings, and took a practically perfect ball from Pragyan Ojha to dislodge him.*07.00pm GMT, March 16: The copy has been updated after reviewing the laws of the game.
