– Fundamental a vitória. As cobranças, deixamos claro, fazem parte.

E embora cobre bom desempenho dos jogadores independentemente do tamanho do público presente, Zé Ricardo pediu que novamente haja arquibancadas cheias.

French cricket just the job for Gloucestershire

Benny Howell, a rarity in county cricket history – a cricketer born in France – joined century-maker Kane Williamson to make Derbyshire struggle after enforcing the follow-on

Nigel Gardner at Derby04-May-2012
ScorecardThe County Ground at Derby and the game itself was a lot different when Derbyshire recorded their last innings victory over Gloucestershire in a remarkable match back in 1981. A strong Gloucestershire batting line-up including Chris Broad, Sadiq Mohammad and Zaheer Abbas was skittled inside two days at the end of July following an astonishing first-innings collapse from 64 without loss to 91 all out.The current Gloucestershire team is less renowned and they were facing defeat inside three days at Derby when they were made to follow-on, 182 runs behind, under leaden skies that required the floodlights to be switched on from start of play. But they proved far more resilient than their more illustrious predecessors and by the close led by 37 runs with eight wickets remaining.Derbyshire would certainly have fancied their chances of rolling them over again in those conditions but, as is often the case, the batsmen showed a lot more fight second time around with Benny Howell easing the memory of his first-innings duck with an impressive half-century which was followed by a fine unbeaten hundred from the New Zealand Test batsman Kane Williamson. Many shudder at the mention of Derby in early May and although this was a day borrowed from winter, the ground has improved beyond all recognition and at least Howell will have a warm glow when he looks back at his composed 64. So to will his father John who watched his son reach his second first-class fifty and who has postponed his flight back to Australia so he can see him play at Lord’s on Bank Holiday Monday.Howell Snr appeared for Warwickshire 2nd X1 in 1978 so he will have appreciated the way his son played as he tries to earn himself a contract following his release by Hampshire at the end of last season.”I’m signed up for the season but I’m just playing on a match-by-match basis,” said Howell, whose birthplace in Bordeaux makes him a rarity in the history of county cricket. “Gloucestershire are looking after me and I’m just happy to be playing cricket and see where it takes me. My dad is over visiting from Australia and he was up here on some work so he popped in to watch me play. I saw him walking between buildings and he had a little superstition going on and although I tried to concentrate on batting, I did find it quite funny but I’m glad I did well for him today.”It’s not nice going out on a pair and the first ball I nicked through the slips for four. It was difficult conditions but we just had to bat and it certainly helps batting with Kane who is so calm and collected and has experienced a lot of high-quality cricket.”Howell was eventually dismissed seven short of his career-best score by a clever piece of bowling by Jon Clare who along with Tony Palladino and Tim Groenewald makes up a strong Derbyshire seam attack. Add to that the left-arm spin of David Wainwright, now enjoying a fresh start after opting to leave Yorkshire, and it is easy to see why Derbyshire have started the season so well unbtiul Howell and Williamson intervened.Together, they set a tone of defiance that was largely absent on the second day when the batting subsided to Palladino and Clare who received their Derbyshire caps along with Martin Guptill and Wes Durston before the start of play. When Wainwright snared Paul Muchall to wrap up Gloucestershire’s first innings and an error of judgement by Chris Dent saw him lose his off stump as he shouldered arms at the start of the second, the rest of the home dressing room was probably preparing for celebrations before the close. But Howell and Williamson showed what could be achieved with the right approach and although Derbyshire bowled well, they put Gloucestershire back in the game.Howell stepped out to straight drive Wainwright for six on his way to a 72-ball fifty and was only seven short of his career-best score when Clare deceived him with a slower ball to end a stand of 117.Although Wainwright wheeled away from the City End, at one stage bowling 12 overs for only seven runs, Derbyshire could not prise out Williamson whose previous first-class appearance saw him make a match-saving hundred against South Africa in Wellington in March. He celebrated his second century for Gloucestershire by cutting Wainwright backward of point and when a short ball persuaded the umpires the light was not good enough even with the lights on, the visitors were 37 in front with a chance of denying Derbyshire a third victory of the season.

Rain could affect Kent finances – Clifford

Kent chief executive Jamie Clifford said the poor weather that washed out most of day two could affect the county’s finances

Mark Pennell at Tunbridge Wells07-Jun-2012
ScorecardHaving moved on a couple of their higher-paid players and cut staff levels to the bone in an effort to ease the financial burden of ground redevelopment work in Canterbury, the last thing Kent needed was this dismal, rain-ruined start to the season.Hundreds of overs lost have been lost, attendances are down by a third on like-for-like figures from 2011 and beer sales have plummeted accordingly. Little wonder then that the county’s chief executive, Jamie Clifford, was hoping for a sun-filled cricket week in Tunbridge Wells.Instead, Clifford and the Kent faithful have witnessed only 33.4 overs of action during the opening two, rain-affected days of the 100th Tunbridge Wells week and, rather like the sodden outfield at the Nevill Ground, Clifford will struggle to cope with much more of it.”Operationally you have to keep smiling and chivvying people along, tomorrow’s another day and all that, but inside I can’t help but know that this weather is starting to affect us,” Clifford said. “People’s hard work is being washed down the drain and that’s disappointing. But we are only two days into a six-day festival, so we might still have some cricket and a little more cause for optimism.”Clifford is also mindful that the financial support the county receives from Tunbridge Wells Borough Council is also being undermined by the inclement weather and the knock-on effect of dwindling attendances.”The efforts of the club and the Borough Council in staging an event like this, well away from our headquarters, are not being rewarded,” he said. “The council’s financial input is not insignificant and they need to see some return on that by way of economic benefit to the town as a whole. They want to see big attendances, people coming to the town, having a beer and a bite to eat and filling hotel rooms for the nights. They aren’t getting any of that right now.”The support they give us is fundamental to us coming here. The model really works and we generally get big crowds in here, but all that starts to look a little different when we get prolonged spells of poor weather like this.”And though Clifford has insurance cover (under the ECB’s rain-day policy) to protect Kent’s opening Friends Life t20 clash against neighbours Sussex, scheduled for Tuesday night, he admits the club would still suffer substantial losses should the fixture be washed out.”There are some big numbers that fall outside of the insurance cover, like beer sales, food, merchandising in the club shop and programme sales,” he said. “Advance ticket sales are looking good and we’re on course for a sell out, but if the weather hits us again and we get no cricket, then you only have to add those sums together to know they will have a big impact on us.”As for the second day, only 18.3 overs were bowled during which Hampshire added 40 to their overnight score. When the rain returned 30 minutes from the scheduled lunch interval, the visitors had reached 90 for 3, with Simon Katich and Liam Dawson unbeaten on 43 and 22 respectively.

Day-night Tests discussed at ICC meeting – Faul

Day-night Test cricket has once again become a possibility after the ICC annual conference in Kuala Lampur

Firdose Moonda28-Jun-2012

Jacques Faul, acting CSA head: “The pink Kookaburra ball is good enough, is what we have been told [after Pakistan’s day-night first-class games].”•Clare Skinner

Day-night Test cricket has once again become a possibility after the ICC annual conference in Kuala Lampur. All Full Members were approached and asked if they would be open to the idea of hosting a day-night Test and there seems to be interested from some quarters. CSA’s acting chief executive, Jacques Faul, called it “one the exciting ideas” to emerge from the meeting.”We were all encouraged to try and host a night Test,” Faul said at a press briefing on his return home. “In our case, it’s something the board will have to approve first before anything else can happen. Then, we’ll have to convince the players, the coach and the opponents.”Although Faul admitted the idea is something CSA may “want to try”, he said he would not be happy to rush into it without some form of trial run. “If we do it, we will start off with a first-class match. I’m not brave enough to just get into a [international] night game without testing it,” he said. Pakistan is the only country that have played first-class cricket under lights, with the final of the Quaid-e-Azam trophy being played as a day-night fixture for the last two seasons.Faul said there was significant feedback from the Pakistan experiment to pique the interest of some other countries, including South Africa. “There weren’t any negative comments about it,” he said. “The pink Kookaburra ball is good enough, is what we have been told.”Should South Africa decide to sample the concept, Faul said they will look carefully into which grounds they can use, with a particular focus on weather. “Night cricket is a funny thing, because it means playing in different conditions,” he said. “I am a little scared about the dew factor at certain grounds at certain times of the year.” South Africa’s Highveld venues as well as the coastal ground in Durban, where humidity is high, usually have significant amounts of dew during the summer months. The specifics of day-night Test cricket are already being talked about in some form. Faul said the idea would be to start at 4pm and play until around 10pm, meaning playing time amounting to an hour less than is currently the norm. “It’s speculation for now,” Faul said.He admitted the most important aspect would be getting players to agree to participate in the idea but, he said, he believed it could revolutionise the longest format of the game. “It will be interesting to see how the players react to it but I think it could be very beneficial,” Faul said. “I think that might be the way forward. I might not see it taking place at every venue or against every team, but it definitely has the blessing of the ICC executive’s committee.”
