Joel Garner, the former fast bowler, has been appointed interim manager of West Indies for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. He had earlier been manager of the team from the tour of Australia late last year till the end of the home series against South Africa earlier this year.”It is an honour to serve West Indies cricket in whatever capacity I am asked,” Garner said. “As always, I am willing to do what is required to see West Indies cricket move forward.”Garner, 57, played 58 Tests and 98 ODIs between 1977 and 1987 and was an integral member of Clive Lloyd’s all-conquering West Indies team. He is the president of the Barbados Cricket Association and a director of the West Indies Cricket Board, which is still looking for someone to take up the manager’s post for the long term.West Indies cricket is going through a difficult time. Last month, their opener and then captain, Chris Gayle, and two key allrounders, Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard, turned down central contracts offered by the board. In response, the board removed Gayle from captaincy and put Darren Sammy – who has played only eight Tests – in charge. Sammy’s first chance to lead the team will be on the tour of Sri Lanka, which starts with a three-day warm-up match in Colombo from November 10.

Bangladesh vulnerable after double-whammy

ESPNcricinfo previews the second ODI between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in Mirpur

The Preview by Dustin Silgardo02-Dec-2010Match FactsFriday, December 3
Start time 09:00 (03:00 GMT)Shakib Al Hasan scored a half-century in the first ODI against Zimbabwe but later said he was not happy with his role as Bangladesh captain•Associated Press

The Big PictureBangladesh will be under intense pressure to recover from Wednesday’s double-whammy – a surprise loss to Zimbabwe followed by their captain Shakib Al Hasan’s outburst that he was not satisfied with his role as captain nor with the team he has been given. A single loss should not really take all the wind out of Bangladesh’s sails, as the memory of their 4-0 drubbing of New Zealand in October is still fresh, but a wavering captain makes them especially vulnerable.Zimbabwe have the opportunity to prove they could be a threat to the other sides in their group during the World Cup next year. They are notorious giant-killers in World Cups, and the spin duo of Ray Price and Prosper Utseya will relish the conditions in the subcontinent, as they showed in the first ODI.Both sides will hope to better their batting performances from the first match. Even during Bangladesh’s series win over New Zealand, they never once crossed 250 and had to rely on their left-arm spinners to deliver victories. Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura will have to start with himself if he wants his batsmen to improve, having only scored one half-century this year.Form Guide(most recent first)Bangladesh: LWWWWZimbabwe: WLLLLLWatch out for … Tatenda Taibu has averaged 37.38 in ODIs over the last 12 months and with Chigumbura struggling for runs and the inexperienced Regis Chakabva and Craig Ervine making up the rest of Zimbabwe’s middle-order, the onus will be on Taibu to score runs in the middle overs. Taibu has had plenty of experience playing on subcontinent tracks and will need to take the lead in showing the rest of the batsmen how to deal with Bangladesh’s spinners.Bangladesh let Zimbabwe get away to a quick start in the first ODI before the spinners pulled the game back. They will be looking to Mashrafe Mortaza to prevent that from happening on Friday. Mortaza’s position in the side is an interesting one because he was originally named captain for the New Zealand series but injured himself in the first game. The selectors decided to stick with Shakib despite Mortaza’s return and he will now have to prove that he can be a match-winner with the ball if he is to be handed back the captaincy.Pitch ConditionsThe teams will stay in Dhaka for the second and third ODIs so conditions can be expected to be the same as the first match. The trend at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium has been batsmen struggling with the slow and low conditions and the spinners able to maintain a lid on run-scoring. As the first ODI proved, a total of anything more than 200 will prove challenging for the side batting second as the wicket gets slower and offers some turn.TeamsShakib said Bangladesh missed the fielding skills of Naeem Islam and Raqibul Hassan, so they could come in to the side. Mohammad Ashraful’s return to the team saw him make just seven runs, so there might be pressure to drop him again. Junaid Siddique will also be under pressure having failed to get past 20 in each of his last four innings.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Junaid Siddique/ Naeem Islam, 4 Raqibul Hasan / Mohammad Ashraful, 5 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 6 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 7 Suhrawadi Shuvo, 8 Mahmudullah, 9 Mashrafe Mortaza, 10 Abdur Razzak, 11 Shafiul IslamHamilton Masakadza was dropped for the first ODI and with his replacement Chakabva top-scoring for Zimbabwe, could continue to be left out. Zimbabwe also have hard-hitting allrounder Ryan Butterworth in their squad.Zimbabwe (probable): 1 Brendan Taylor, 2 Chamu Chibhabha, 3 Regis Chakabva, 4. Tatenda Taibu (wk), 5 Elton Chigumbura (capt), 6 Craig Ervine, 7 Keegan Meth, 8 Prosper Utseya, 9 Keith Dabengwa, 10 Raymond Price, 11 Chris MpofuStats and Trivia There has never been a score of over 300 during a day game at the Shere Bangla Stadium Zimbabwe have only two batsmen in their line-up with a strike-rate of over 70 in ODIs. Elton Chigumbura strike-rate of 88.33 is the highest for any Zimbabwe batsman who has scored more than 1000 runs in ODIs. In 26 Innings, Zimbabwe No.11 Chris Mpofu has hit a solitary four and averages 2.38.Quotes”I am not satisfied with my role as a captain. The reasons are numerous, and I cannot detail all of them right at the moment.”
“We need to do more as a team and our total today fell short of what we had wanted as a target.”

Wolves: Podence ruled out of Chelsea clash

Wolverhampton Wanderers could be without their Portuguese winger Daniel Podence for their trip to Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

What’s the latest?

That is according to a recent report from Nathan Judah, who claimed via Twitter: “Podence is a bit of a grey area, has an injury and potentially could play through injections, but he’s unwilling at the moment because he might aggravate that problem.”

Lage will be worried

The latest news comes as a big worry for Lage and Wolves, who have registered their worst run of the season over the last three games. Their three-match losing streak has seen them leak five goals with no reply.

Coincidentally or otherwise, Podence has been absent for all three of those games in which Wolves have failed to score, evidence of his creative importance for the Old Gold.

Despite struggling to boost his end product for what is now a second consecutive season, the 26-year-old is the most creative outlet in Lage’s side, having registered seven big chances out of Wolves’ entire tally of 35 as a team this season.

His defensive acumen in the side is also overlooked all too often, with Podence topping the charts out of the Wolves squad for possession won in the final third with an average of 1.3 per game. This metric places him as high as joint-sixth for the entire Premier League, tied with Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne.

His average of 2.1 successful dribbles per 90 could have presented an opportunity for Lage’s side to attack in a more direct manner against what will likely be a close-knit Chelsea backline, so the news of his continued absence comes as a big blow for Wolves and Podence, who may not feature again this season.

However, if he wants to hit the ground running next season, his decision to not play through injections and instead let his injury heal over the summer could most certainly turn out to be the best move for everyone involved.

Uganda give Kenya food for thought

Kenya ended a less-than-convincing year with a 2-1 series win against neighbours Uganda, but a comprehensive defeat in the dead rubber was not the ideal way to conclude 2010

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Dec-2010Kenya ended a less-than-convincing year with a 2-1 series win against neighbours Uganda, but a comprehensive defeat in the dead rubber was not the ideal way to conclude 2010.The first two matches at Mombasa Sports Club went according to script. Kenya batted first, posted a formidable total and then Uganda came up well short. In the opening game Collins Obuya (106) made more than half Kenya’s 207 and then 19-year-old left-arm seamer Lucas Oluoch took 4 for 32 as Uganda limped to 123 all out.Two days later Alex Obanda put a duck in the opening game behind him in making exactly 100, and aided by Obuya’s unbeaten 71, Kenya made 304 for 4. Although Uganda’s batsmen fared slightly better, their 210 was still a long way short of making a match of it.With the series done and dusted, coach Eldine Baptiste wanted a clean sweep but instead he got a lacklustre display from his top-order batsmen. Roger Mukasa’s 86 took Uganda to 223 all out, a score well within Kenya’s sights, but instead they crumbled to 53 for 5 and only David Obuya’s defiant 68 enabled them to keep the margin of defeat under three figures.

Tahir and van Wyk picked for World Cup

Imran Tahir, the Pakistan-born legspinner, is the only uncapped player named in South Africa’s World Cup squad

Imran Tahir, the Pakistan-born legspinner, is the only uncapped player named in South Africa’s World Cup squad. Reserve wicketkeeper Morne van Wyk is a surprise inclusion in the final XV while there is no room for David Miller.Tahir’s inclusion means that South Africa have five spin options in their bowling attack, a sign that they have moulded the squad to suit subcontinent conditions. Tahir only became eligible to play South Africa on New Year’s Day and has yet to make his debut but his inexperience at international level is not bothering the selectors. “It is not a worry that Tahir has not played an ODI yet,” Andrew Hudson, convenor of selectors, said. “The conditions in South Africa have been more suited to seam bowling and his record in domestic cricket both in South Africa and England speaks for itself. We know exactly what he offers us.”Faf du Plessis, the allrounder who made his debut against India on Tuesday night, is the other legspinner in the squad, giving South Africa an option they have not had at a World Cup before. du Plessis scored a classy 60 in his first match, although he struggled with cramp and received treatment on his forearm. He spent some time off the field but later returned and bowled an over. “I am very happy with Faf du Plessis’ debut and form. He gives us a leg-spinning option as well and is an outstanding fielder.”du Plessis will replace Miller at number six or seven in the batting line-up. Miller has been inconsistent since making his debut against the West Indies in May 2010. Although he is a clean hitter of the ball, he has struggled in the current series against India, scoring just 36 runs in two innings and his inexperience could well have cost his place. Miller is only 21-years-old and opportunity will no doubt come his way in the future.Colin Ingram, who came into the national team against Zimbabwe in October last year, after Miller had made his debut, has retained his place. Ingram has been batting at No. 3, in place of the injured Jacques Kallis, and will move down the order when Kallis returns. Kallis suffered a side strain and bruising to his rib during the Test series against India and was left out of the ODI squad for the current in order to recover. Kallis is fully fit for the World Cup. “CSA’s Medical Committee are happy with Kallis’ progress and he will be ready to play a full role with both bat and ball from the start of the tournament.”Kallis will form part of a battery of five seamers that includes Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and two left-armers in Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Wayne Parnell. Parnell has been the weakest of the five since making a comeback from a groin injury against Pakistan in November last year. He has been battled with his rhythm and accuracy but has been included despite his inexperience. Kallis is the only one of the five bowlers who has played in a World Cup before.Together with Smith, AB de Villiers and Robin Petersen, Kallis is one of only four survivors from the last World Cup in the West Indies in 2007. Mark Boucher, the only other player from that tournament who could have been recalled was discarded in place of van Wyk.van Wyk has been rewarded for consistent performances at domestic level and has been preferred to Mark Boucher as the reserve wicketkeeper, essentially signaling the end of Boucher’s limited-overs career. van Wyk is also a back-up opening batsman, who could come in handy if one of Graeme Smith or Hashim Amla are indisposed. In 10 matches in this season’s MNT40, he scored 323 runs at an average of 35.88, including a match-winning century in the semi-final and undefeated 85 in the final. van Wyk has played six ODIs, the last one against New Zealand in November 2007 and has an average of 32.50.Squad: Graeme Smith (capt), Hashim Amla, Johan Botha, AB de Villiers (wk), JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Colin Ingram, Jacques Kallis, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Dale Steyn, Imran Tahir, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Morne van Wyk (wk)
