Crystal Palace: Parish drops Zaha update

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has claimed that he doesn’t think “there are any doubts” over the Eagles looking to extend the contract of Wilfried Zaha.

What’s the story?

Speaking to the South London Press, Parish said: “We love Wilfried to bits, but that is a situation that we will discuss with him and his people. We will try and find the right answer for everybody at the right time.”

The Eagles star has enjoyed his best season in front of goal this term with 12 to his name, but the 29-year-old’s current deal is set to expire next summer.

Supporters will be ecstatic

With the Ivorian being a vital cog in the Palace set up for the best part of a decade, supporters will be delighted at the prospect of the club offering him a new contract.

Of course, from Parish’s perspective, attempting to extend the stay of one of the club’s best-ever players is a no brainer. Ultimately, it will come down to whether or not the 29-year-old will want to stay at Selhurst Park.

Zaha has attempted to force transfers away before, with the winger handing in a transfer request back in 2019 in an attempt to join Arsenal, having signed a five-year deal the year before.

However, the Ivory Coast international has since remained in the Palace setup and has seen manager Patrick Vieira enjoy the best of the winger in the Frenchman’s first season in charge at Selhurst Park.

This could well be a contributing factor to attempting to convince the forward to extend his stay.

Since graduating from the Crystal Palace youth set-up in 2010, Zaha has gone on to make 424 appearances for the south Londoners, with a brief spell at Manchester United ultimately proving unsuccessful before a return to Selhurst Park.

In that period, the winger has scored 80 goals for Palace alongside registering 73 assists, making him the Eagles’ 12th highest all-time goalscorer.

Besides the efforts of Zaha and Conor Gallagher, who is expected to return to Chelsea this summer, goals from other sources have been limited with the likes of Odsonne Edouard (six), Jean-Philippe Mateta (six), Christian Benteke (four) and Jordan Ayew (two) all scoring no more than half of the 29-year-old’s current tally for the campaign.

Therefore, the prospect of the Palace star signing a new deal will have supporters ecstatic.

Warriors hope to keep home interest alive

Chennai Super Kings need to win to have any chance of progressing to the semi-finals, while Warriors can make it even if they lose by a small margin

The Preview by Siddarth Ravindran21-Sep-2010Match factsWednesday, September 22
Start time 1730 (1530 GMT)Davey Jacobs has been in top form for Warriors•AFP

Big PictureFirst up the basics: Chennai Super Kings need to win to have any chance of progressing to the semi-finals, while Warriors can make it even if they lose by a small margin. For example, if they are chasing 160, they can afford to lose by no more than 27 runs, while if Warriors score 160 batting first, they’ll have to ensure Chennai take at least 16.4 overs to reach their target.
The presence of two weak teams – Wayamba and Central Districts – in Group A means there’s a chance that a side can get knocked out from the Champions League for losing only one game in the tournament. Warriors have won all their matches so far, but a big defeat against Chennai Super Kings will mean there will be no home teams in the semi-finals. Similarly, Victoria have swept all before them after flopping in their opening game, but still have to nervously watch the Warriors-Chennai match to know their fate. The superb form of Warriors’ captain and opener, Davey Jacobs, is one reason why they are best-placed to progress but the top-order’s effectiveness has hidden a potential weakness – a shallow middle order. Johan Botha looks to be playing a position too high at No. 6 but Jacobs wasn’t too concerned by it. “We have Nicky Boje, who comes after Botha, and has scored couple of ODI hundreds,” Jacobs said. “So I am very confident about my team’s batting. We have done everything we could to get here. We shall continue to do those basics.”For Chennai, the department to worry about is probably the bowling. While they have two world-class performers in Doug Bollinger and Muttiah Muralitharan, their local bowlers, medium-pacer L Balaji and offspinner R Ashwin, need to bounce back from the pasting they received in the previous match.Team newsOne decision Chennai will have to make is regarding which Australian batsman to pick: Matthew Hayden was out of touch in his two outings in the tournament, while Michael Hussey scored at less than run-a-ball against Victoria. Albie Morkel’s fitness is also a source of worry.Chennai Super Kings (probable): 1 M Vijay, 2 Matthew Hayden / Michael Hussey, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 S Badrinath, 5 MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), 6 S Anirudha, 7 Albie Morkel / Justin Kemp, 8 Doug Bollinger, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 L Balaji.Justin Kreusch has had little to do with bat or ball in the previous two matches but his ability to bat should win him a place in a team with a longish tail. Warriors may also toy with the idea of playing Garnett Kruger in place of one of the three frontline quicks.Warriors (probable): 1 Davey Jacobs (capt), 2 Ashwell Prince, 3 Colin Ingram, 4 Craig Thyssen, 5 Mark Boucher (wk), 6 Johan Botha, 7 Justin Kreusch, 8 Nicky Boje, 9 Rusty Theron, 10 Makhaya Ntini, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe.Watch out for …Colin Ingram will be celebrating his maiden call-up to the South African team, a reward for topping the run-charts in the Pro20 to lead the Warriors to the title. He has been off-colour in the Champions League, and Wednesday’s crunch match could be the one where he shows off his talent to a wider audience. As the leading run-getter after three seasons of the IPL, Suresh Raina’s importance to Chennai as a batsman is well-known. Against Victoria on Saturday, he showcased his talents as a spinner, taking four wickets and was even entrusted with the responsibility of bowling the tense final over of a tight game.Key contestsJacobs v Bollinger: Jacobs’ big-hitting has been pivotal to Warriors’ three consecutive wins, and he has also boldly spoken of how important he can be to South Africa in the Twenty20 format. He has been overlooked for South Africa’s Twenty20 series against Zimbabwe and Pakistan. A confident performance against Bollinger, an in-form quick bowler in a high-pressure match, will give the selectors another reminder of his ability.
Makhaya Ntini v Chennai: From being one of the world’s leading bowlers, Ntini has regressed so much that not only does he not get a much of a look-in for South Africa these days, even his IPL team hasn’t given him an opportunity in two seasons. Wednesday’s match will be a chance for him to show Chennai what they are missing.Stats and trivia The match features the two most economical bowlers (minimum five overs) of the tournament: Johan Botha (4.83) and Muttiah Muralitharan (5.38) Albie Morkel is mostly known in Twenty20s for his big-hitting lower down the order. With 104 wickets, he is also the second-highest wicket-taker in the format, behind Dirk Nannes

Tivemos maturidade. O time deles é bom. Sabemos.

Celtic: Hatate, Maeda and Taylor struggle vs Ross County

Celtic regained their six-point advantage at the top of the Scottish Premiership with a 2-0 win over Ross County on Sunday afternoon.

Ange Postecoglou made three changes from the side that started against Rangers at Hampden Park last weekend, with Anthony Ralston, Matt O’Riley and Kyogo Furuhashi coming in for Josip Juranovic, Tom Rogic and Liel Abada respectively.

It was Furuhashi who opened the scoring in the early stages with a fine header, his first goal since returning from injury, and Jota sealed the victory late on.

The Transfer Tavern have now used statistical experts SofaScore to analyse who the three worst outfield performers (to have played at least 45 minutes) were for the visitors on the day, with these three combined losing possession 42 times and coming second best in 71% of their duels.

Reo Hatate – 6.3/10

Hatate was the worst-rated performer on Sunday, ending with a rating of 6.3/10. The January signing was taken off with just over 15 minutes remaining for David Turnbull after losing all five of his duels and giving the ball away 14 times.

The midfielder failed to complete a dribble, make a tackle, interception or have a shot on target, making it an afternoon to forget on a personal note.

Daizen Maeda – 6.5/10

Maeda turned out on the wing but didn’t catch the eye in his 65-minute display. The versatile forward was eventually replaced by Tom Rogic and gave possession away on 10 occasions.

He also lost five of his eight duels, missed a big chance and was unsuccessful in 66% of his dribbles, ending with a rating of 6.5/10.

Callum McGregor – 6.8/10

McGregor is the third and final inclusion, ending with a rating of 6.8/10. The Scot gave the ball away 18 times and lost two of his four duels.

He also failed to make a clearance all afternoon and managed just one tackle, while four of his five attempted long balls were misplaced.

Determined Shakib battles the conditions

Shakib Al Hasan did not raise his bat to acknowledge the cheers for his fifty – here was a man who knew his job was not yet done. He went on to defy oppressive conditions and take his side to a historic series win

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Oct-2010

Shakib Al Hasan was delighted with the aggressive intent his side displayed on the field•Associated Press

On a day when he impressed with bat, ball and as a captain, one moment captured Shakib Al Hasan’s determination more than any other. His half-century had steadied Bangladesh after a troubled start, but they were still far from a safe score when he reached fifty in the 26th over. Shakib did not raise his bat to acknowledge the cheers for his landmark – here was a man who knew his job was not yet done.”Well, I have said before that if the opportunity is there then one should target a hundred,” Shakib said after the historic win. “Jamie [Siddons] also said that it is up to you whether you want to show the bat after a fifty. I was aware that I had reached the half-century but felt that there was a long way to go and my job wasn’t finished.”Shakib’s century was made special both by the quality of the opposition and the oppressive conditions in which it came. “Things were extremely tough because of the heat,” Shakib said. “When I was batting I could feel that I was struggling physically and I still don’t know how I got through those 50 overs of fielding and bowling because there were times when I thought I could collapse. I guess staying on the field for 50 overs was an achievement today.”His dismissal in the 43rd over set Bangladesh back, and they managed only 25 runs after his exit. Yet, Shakib said he was confident during the break that his bowlers had enough to defend. “I think we were set for 260 plus but lost it in the last Powerplay. However, I wasn’t unhappy because we believe that we are capable of defending 240 on this track.”Bangladesh buzzed about in the field, putting up a memorable fielding show to down New Zealand, despite a valiant maiden ton from Kane Williamson. Shakib acknowledged the aggressive intent displayed on the field. “I feel privileged to be a part of this Bangladesh side. Today I saw players who would normally remain silent in the field shouting, cheering and encouraging throughout the game.”Everyone was so into it, Imrul [Kayes], Suhrawadi [Shuvo] … and I have lost count here. Even someone like Shafiul [Islam], who is relatively new in the side was all pumped up and shouting after bowling an over in that scorching heat. This is something that that I haven’t seen often in the past and the spirit makes my job a lot easier.”The series win was Bangladesh’s first against full-strength top opposition, but Shakib refused to rate it higher than the 3-0 win against a depleted West Indies side in 2009. “Many people don’t realize this but the West Indies were not that far off from their original strength if you go by the players that had played against us. That was a tough series and this one too has been quite demanding. Both have been very satisfying.”Shakib has been a regular at the head of the ICC player ratings, and is currently the top ODI allrounder and the second highest-rated bowler in the game. However, he believed his bowling was far from where he wanted it to be. “I am quite happy with how I have batted in this series but not at all satisfied with my bowling. I guess the gap after playing for Worcester has affected the bowling a bit and I need to work on that.”While Bangladesh have managed to surprise each of the top teams at some point in the last 11 years, their lack of consistency has been a cause for concern. Shakib admitted that it would be his side’s biggest challenge in the lead-up to the World Cup in the subcontinent.”We were winning a lot of matches leading up to the 2007 World Cup and that had a positive impact on our performance in the tournament,” Shakib said. “This time we are beating superior teams and I hope the winning trend will continue against Zimbabwe in December.”If we can maintain that winning habit then we will be in a great state of mind when the World cup arrives and here we are a match for any team and capable of beating any side, particularly those that are not from the subcontinent.”The series may be in the bag, but Bangladesh have a lot at stake going into the dead rubber on Sunday. Victory will lift them to 67 rating points, level with the West Indies on the ICC one-day team ranking table. That should be motivation enough for Shakib and his side to deliver another inspired performance.

Do outro lado, Vitinho fez ainda no primeiro tempo.

NO FINAL

Liverpool ‘will end up’ signing Darwin Nunez

Liverpool reportedly have a first agreement to sign Benfica’s Uruguayan striker, Darwin Nunez.

What’s the word?

According to the latest report from Journalist Brahian Kuchman: “There would be a first agreement for Darwin Nunez to be a new English Liverpool player.”

Taking to his Twitter page, Kuchman also stated: “Jurgen Klopp has grown tired of praising the Uruguayan to such an extent that he will end up hiring him.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

Klopp’s final straw

If the latest reports are anything to go by, Klopp will most certainly have the 22-year-old goal machine at his disposal next season.

Described as a “proper talent” by freelance football writer Amos Murphy on Twitter and as a “diamond” by Steve McManaman, Nunez is having the season of his life in Liga Portugal this year.

His both legs of their Champions League showdown earlier this month.

Of course, Klopp will have subtle confidence about picking up players from Liga Portugal, with his recent coup of former Porto star Luis Diaz demonstrating the amount of value that is scattered all over Portugal.

25-year-old Diaz has transitioned seamlessly into English football, with his five goal returns from nine appearances serving as great evidence of that.

The 54-year-old Liverpool boss Klopp will also be aware of the potential partnership that could blossom between Diaz and Nunez. With the trio of Mane, Salah and Firmino all in the final year of their contracts, Liverpool may be thinking about the future.

Those at Anfield will be urging the club to sign the out-and-out striker who possesses limitless potential at just 22-years-old, though it will not be cheap.

Whilst the Anfield side may reportedly have a “first agreement” to sign the 6 foot 2 goal-machine, he is valued at a mighty £83m by some sources.
