Steve Bruce will be hoping that his West Brom side can take all three points as they travel to Luton Town this afternoon, and the new Baggies manager will be relieved as he is handed a lifeline ahead of the Championship clash.

What’s the word?

The 61-year-old manager took to his pre-match press conference to confirm the return of Kyle Bartley, following a bout of illness that saw him hospitalised and side-lined for the last two weeks.

Bruce said in his update on Bartley;

“He’s trained all week. It’s known that he was suffering with chicken pox and thankfully he’s over that.”

The manager also confirmed that Matt Phillips continues to recover from his injury and Jake Livermore remains unavailable as he is serving a four match ban following his second red card of the season.

Fans will be buzzing

Fans will be buzzing that Bartley will be available to return to action this weekend, as the Baggies attempt the challenge of securing a play off position in the Championship after a huge drop off from the first few months of the season, when they were in contention for a title race and automatic promotion and have now found themselves battling for a play off spot, currently sitting 9th in the table.

The centre back has definitely been one of their more consistent players this season, bagging two goals from his defensive position which is more than Kenneth Zohore and Jordan Hugill combined, speaking volumes on the situation Albion have found themselves in this season.

According to SofaScore, Bartley is the third highest rated player (7.10) in the entire West Brom squad this season, and it comes as no surprise when he is winning the majority of his duels (68%), successful in the majority of his dribbles (75%) and the side have secured 10 out of their 13 clean sheets when the defender has appeared in the side.

With that being said, the return of the 30 year old will offer the Baggies a huge boost against Luton Town in a challenging fixture for the side, as their opponents are just one point behind them in the table and a defeat would see West Brom fall into tenth or even further down the table depending on how Preston and Coventry get on this weekend too.

Marsch will be gutted

Considering the sheer number of injuries with which Jesse Marsch has had to contend since his arrival at Elland Road back in March, the news that Watford have a fully-fit squad for the relegation six-pointer this afternoon is sure to have left the 48-year-old Leeds manager gutted.

Indeed, while the return of Joe Gelhardt will have come as a huge boost to the American and his side, the fact nevertheless remains that Leeds are having to make do without a number of their first-team regulars at Vicarage Road – with Tyler Roberts, Junior Firpo, Patrick Bamford and Jamie Shackleton all sidelined.

Furthermore, the return of long-term absentee Nkoulou and the highly-rated Germany under-19 international Baah will not only provide the Hornets with a boost for their meeting with the Whites this weekend, but also over the remainder of the season. Considering that there are just eight points separating Watford and Leeds prior to kick-off today, that could give Hodgson’s side the edge in the race for survival, especially if the hosts win at Vicarage Road this afternoon.

As such, it is clear to see that Watford’s clean bill of health is certainly bad news for Leeds, duly making the three points on offer this afternoon all the more important to secure.

When Charl Willoughby removed Phil Mustard in mid-afternoon at Chester-le-Street, Somerset went top of the Championship table but it is still far too early to tell who will finish in that prized position. The visitors, though, aren’t going to die wondering with Marcus Trescothick’s free-flowing 75 leading a quick-scoring reply as Somerset reached 226 for 4 at the close and within sight of a useful advantage.With Nottinghamshire having lost so much time at Old Trafford they are facing an uphill task to secure the 22-point win that gives them the title regardless, so Somerset may not need a maximum bonus-point victory here, either. Their best chance is to bat positively, following Trescothick’s lead, and then hope that Durham’s fight diminishes as the season draws to a close. The scoring rate of 4.77 shows that is their plan as James Hildreth and Peter Trego continued to unfurl their shots despite three quick wickets falling for 48 in seven overs.Trescothick’s fifty came from 65 balls and he was doing as he pleased with some friendly bowling, although the West Indian Ruel Brathwaite bowled an energetic spell on his Durham debut. It was Trescothick’s attacking instincts that brought his downfall as he drove at Ben Harmison – the brother of Steve who, like a host of Durham bowlers, is injured – and edged through to the keeper.Arul Suppiah had pushed a return catch to Liam Plunkett to end an opening stand of 48, but Nick Compton added 84 with Trescothick for the second wicket. It was still Somerset’s advantage at the close, but it remains a three-way fight for the trophy.

Newcastle United have reportedly now sent a scout to watch centre-back Goncalo Inacio, and even made a bid for the player in January, according to reports in Portugal.

The Lowdown: Solid season

Inacio is having another solid season in Lisbon with Sporting CP, having won the title last campaign.

His performances attracted praise from Portuguese media, and he was even nicknamed the ‘Portuguese boss’ despite only being 19 years of age at the time.

Now 20, Inacio has also been a second place in the Primeira Liga table, where they will be hoping to catch FC Porto in first.

The Latest: Official sent, bid revealed

As per A Bola (via Sport Witness), the St. James’ Park faithful sent an official to watch Inacio play in a 3-1 win at Tondela on Saturday, as he found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season.

They apparently had a €30m (£24.9m) bid rejected by Sporting in the January transfer window, but the player does have a €45m (£37.4m) release clause.

The news outlet hints that the North East club must be ‘really interested’ in Inacio, as usually teams from the Premier League send their scouts over to Lisbon or Porto to watch players from the top flight, but the Tyneside outfit sent theirs to Tondela.

The Verdict: Get it done

The fact that Inacio has a release clause should encourage the Magpies to get a deal done.

Having had a £33m bid rejected by Lille for Sven Botman, added to talk of an increased £67m release clause for January target Diego Carlos, £37.4m may be the sweet spot for the Toon to sign a central defender in Inacio who may well have a higher ceiling at just 20 years of age.

Nonetheless, Sporting have a history of selling players to Premier League clubs for big money, and so this is a move that is very possible.
