Celtic: McAvennie reacts to forward rumour

Celtic pundit Frank McAvennie believes that the Hoops will bring in more players before the January transfer window slams shut, as per Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Source shares update

Ange Postecoglou has already brought in four players this month, two of which have been attacking additions in Daizen Maeda and Johnny Kenny.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Celtic are also hoping to make Jota’s loan stay permanent, as well as Cameron Carter-Vickers, in what could be an expensive month for Parkhead chiefs.

A source informed Football Insider that the Hoops are actively looking to bring in another wide forward after Jota, with Shabab Al-Ahli’s Mehdi Ghayedi thought to be a player of interest.

The Latest: McAvennie reacts

McAvennie was talking to Football Insider regarding the possibility of more arrivals over the coming weeks.

He seemed fairly confident Michael Nicholson and co will grant Postecoglou’s wishes and is ‘sure’ there will be further announcements, saying:

“Maybe people were expecting even more signings straight away after the three lads were announced in December.

“I’m sure those deals will get done. We’re still waiting to hear about Jota and Carter-Vickers, I hope they arrive.

“Kenny has come in but I’m not sure how much of a role he will play this season.

“We are not even halfway through the window yet, there is plenty of time to sign these players who will instantly improve us.

“I’m sure they will come because Postecoglou has already been heavily backed and he’s doing such a good job.

“I can’t speak highly enough of him. I didn’t think we would be where we are already.”

The Verdict: Wide forward needed?

It’s certainly exciting that the Hoops are still looking to bolster their squad, but they already have seven wide options on the books, so perhaps looking at other positions could be a smarter move.

Take left-back, for example, where Greg Taylor is first choice. The club are set to send Adam Montgomery out on loan and they are also looking to offload Boli Bolingoli.

Should the pair depart over the coming weeks, Taylor would be the only left-back available to Postecoglou. Although Josip Juranovic can switch over from right-back to provide cover, perhaps bringing in another natural left-back to genuinely compete with Taylor could be a wise call.

West Ham fans slam Nikola Vlasic v Leeds

Some West Ham United fans slammed the perfomance of Nikola Vlasic in their 3-2 loss at home to Leeds United in the Premier League this afternoon.

The Croatia international struggled to make any real impact on the match in truth, and he was subbed off just after the hour mark for Arthur Masuaku after Jack Harrison completed his hat-trick for the away side to put them back in front for a third time.

Vlasic lost out on all three of his duels and also failed to record a single shot on goal, successful dribble, key pass or accurate cross, while he was also guilty of losing the ball 12 times (SofaScore).

With Said Benrahma currently at the African Cup of Nations with Algeria, the 24-year-old is certainly not doing enough to impress David Moyes in his absence, with just one goal to show from his 19 appearances for the Irons.

Zimbabwe spinners shock West Indies

Zimbabwe’s spirited army of spinners scripted a memorable fightback to help the visitors clinch a low-scoring scrap

At the halfway stage, West Indies’ winless streak looked almost certain to be snapped after astonishing spells from Sulieman Benn and Darren Sammy, but Zimbabwe’s spirited army of spinners scripted a memorable fightback to help the visitors clinch a low-scoring scrap. On a day when Australia and New Zealand blasted the highest Twenty20 match aggregate during a nailbiter in Christchurch, Prosper Utseya’s team won a game in which both sides made their lowest ever Twenty20 scores. The Queen’s Park Oval pitch helped the spinners and was a trifle two-paced, but not so treacherous as to merit a record eight ducks, and it merely highlighted the limitations of the batsmen on both sides. What makes the ultimately comfortable victory even more special for Zimbabwe was that they were seemingly down and out after just 16 deliveries, losing three wickets to the left-arm spin of Benn with no score on board. A late onslaught from Elton Chigumbura after Zimbabwe had hobbled to 76 for 6 in 18 overs initially seemed inconsequential, but his 19-ball 34 turned out to be crucial in a match where batsmen couldn’t pull off the big hits. West Indies’ entire innings had only three fours and a six.Utseya had mentioned at the toss that the spinners were one of the side’s big strengths, and with the ball turning significantly, he used the slow bowlers for 18 overs. They proved hard to get away, but there was no signs of the turnaround that lay ahead when Adrian Barath and Shivnarine Chanderpaul negotiated the first five overs, steering West Indies to 20 for 0.Then in a flurry of attempted big hits from their young batsmen, the home side imploded. Barath was bowled in the sixth over after being beaten by the turn when looking to clear the legside boundary, Andre Fletcher picked out the deep square leg fielder with a powerful sweep in the next over, Pollard was foxed by the flight and dip of Graeme Cremer in his first attempt at a signature lofted on-drive, and Darren Bravo picked up a golden duck after the ball kept low when he was trying a Hollywood pull shot. West Indies had stumbled to 32 for 4 and it was game on.Still, with West Indies’ serial rescuer Chanderpaul unbeaten, and given a reprieve when Cremer grassed a sitter at long-on in the 10th over, they were slight favourites. Offspinner Greg Lamb, who had earlier played a completely un-Twenty20 innings consuming 28 deliveries for 11 (all in singles), tipped the game Zimbabwe’s way by trapping Chanderpaul lbw in the 12th over with a delivery that spun a lot less than the batsman expected. From that stage, it was almost all Zimbabwe. Dwayne Smith threatened briefly and stand-in captain Denesh Ramdin battled till the end, but West Indies never really mounted a serious challenge.Ramdin, and the smattering of spectators who turned up, would hardly have expected such a result after the surprise move to open the bowling with Benn paid off spectacularly, with the left-arm spinner crushing Zimbabwe’s top-order to end with 4 for 6. That was the third best bowling analysis in Twenty20s, but only for a short while, as Sammy snared three wickets in the final over to finish with a five-for.Benn struck off the match’s first delivery, when Vusi Sibanda was bowled after failing to read the arm-ball. No. 3 Tatenda Taibu looked to sweep everything that Benn sent down, without much success, and fell lbw in the third over after failing to connect with a full delivery while attempting yet another sweep. Two balls later Stuart Matsikenyeri wafted at an unthreatening ball outside off and nicked to the keeper.Zimbabwe were 0 for 3 but Benn was not done yet, getting Brendan Taylor in his next over. With nine deliveries still remaining in Benn’s spell, the record for the best Twenty20 bowling – Umar Gul’s masterful 5 for 6 against New Zealand in the ICC World Twenty20 last year – was under attack. Zimbabwe’s batsmen, though, managed to defend their way through the rest of Benn’s bowling. After surviving the opening burst from Benn and Kemar Roach, who got the ball to jag about at pace, Hamilton Masakadza started to gain in confidence, and stitched together a partnership with Greg Lamb. Masakadza tried to accelerate by smashing a couple of boundaries but the 40-run stand was broken by one of the softest dismissals: Lamb inexplicably missed a slower one from Sammy – looking to play the ball and then almost offering no stroke, only to see the delivery go on to knock over middle stump.Zimbabwe had their best phase of the innings after that, with Chigumbura looking comfortable at the crease from the outset. He and Masakadza added 21 in three overs before the opener was foxed by a slower offcutter from Sammy. Chigumbura then slammed 22 off an erratic Ravi Rampaul over to boost the target towards triple digits, before he became one of Sammy’s three final-over victims.

Emirates XI secure place in final

Shahid Afridi helped inspire a team full of baggage handlers and airline pursers to great things as the Fly Emirates team beat the Emerging Cape Cobras to qualify for the final of the Emirates Airline Twenty20 festival

ScorecardPakistan allrounder Shahid Afridi helped inspire a team full of baggage handlers and airline pursers to great things in Saturday evening twilight as the Fly Emirates team beat the Emerging Cape Cobras to qualify for the first final of the Emirates Airline Twenty20 festival. The man the part-timers just call ‘Boom Boom’ scored a cameo unbeaten 23 with the bat in their total of 138 for 5 and then bowled four reasonably tight overs to finish with 1 for 23 and restrict the Cobras to 127 for 4. Afridi was engulfed by his ecstatic team-mates as they clinched the nine-run victory to go through to play unbeaten Sussex in the floodlit final at 7he Sevens Stadium, but it was far from a one-man success. It was a case of experience conquering brash exuberance as a Cobras side of teenagers and two contracted players fell apart when seemingly within touching distance of their second win and a place in the final.Their wicketkeeper and opening bat Derek Brand and captain Omphile Ramela had done their best to carry the side over the winning line with an excellent opening stand of 108 in 14 overs – comfortably the biggest of the two-day event.Though Ramela went for 27, Brand continued to charge towards the first half-century of the tournament from 33 balls and with eight fours and a six. He added another three boundaries and had reached 69 before he took one risk too many and was bowled by Yasin Sikander. At 115 for 2, Brand’s would still have reached the final had the eased past 135 yet lost the game, but without his steadying influence the rookie Cobras lacked venom and belief. Fly Emirates captain Nigel Fernandes picked the perfect moment to bowl a maiden and, with the pressure at its maximum, the Cobras could only muster 11 runs from their final four overs to bow out of the tournament in disappointing fashion. It was all cheers and high-fives for the Emirates side, however. Watched by their boss – airline vice chairman and Lancashire fan Maurice Flanagan – they put in their best performance over the two days. For once their batting held firm on a crumbling pitch and steady contributions from opener Mohammad Iqbal (42), Arshad Ali (20), Afridi (23) and Kashif Khan (17*) proved enough to tame the Cobras.

Everton manager news on Ferguson

Many Everton fans have been left buzzing over some manager news involving Duncan Ferguson.

As per the official website of the Merseyside club, he has now been appointed as the caretaker manager for the upcoming matches, after Rafa Benitez left his post following the 2-1 loss away at Norwich City in the Premier League.

Ferguson took charge of training at USM Finch Farm on Tuesday morning, as they prepare to face Aston Villa at Goodison Park at Saturday lunchtime, and he will be supported by John Ebbrell, Leighton Baines and Alan Kelly.

Of course, the Scotsman is a Toffees legend after so many years as both a player and coach, scoring 72 goals in 273 games in total. In his first stint as an interim manager, he was impressive, winning his opening fixture 3-1 at home to Chelsea back in 2019, while also picking up draws against both Manchester United and Arsenal (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, he seemingly looks to be a very popular appointment among the Blues supporters.

A vida fora do futebol
